Chapter 117: Chapter 117: Support from the Captain

Having just cracked a difficult case, Li Jian sat in his office, enjoying a rare moment of leisure.

He took out some high-quality pre-Qingming tea gifted by a friend and brewed a pot.

However, the pot of tea wasn’t fully brewed yet.

The phone call from Jiang An came through.

Hearing Jiang An’s judgment over the phone, Li Jian was suddenly stunned.

After a moment of surprise, Li Jian thought to himself.

He had just handed the case file to Jiang An less than half an hour ago.

What can be done in half an hour?

Can you familiarize yourself with the case file from start to finish?

It’s worth noting that when this case happened, Jiang An was still at school preparing his thesis.

Moreover, this case wasn’t a murder case, just a regular high fall death.

In Li Jian’s view, it wasn’t very complicated.

The criminal investigation officers involved in this case were all reliable and trusted by him.

Thinking briefly, Li Jian pondered if this young man felt a bit heady after solving a few cases in a row.

Shouldn’t he ponder deeply the conclusions made by his seniors?

Then, Li Jian raised his cup of tea, blew at the floating leaves on the surface, and asked, ”Have you finished reading the case file?”

Jiang An answered, ”Mr. Li, I have roughly gone through the case file.”

”My mentor told me a lot about the situation at the time.”

”However, I’ve noticed some very unusual things on the scene and in the photos of the corpse.”

Li Jian then tactfully said, ”Jiang An, do you think we need to consider this more carefully?”

As soon as he finished speaking, Jiang An continued.

”Mr. Li, high-fall death cases aren’t rare in themselves.”

”Although the decedent in this case was decapitated, that isn’t peculiar; I’ve seen similar cases before.”

”The only unusual thing for me is that the torso was too close to the wall.”

”At least in my view, the deceased had almost no initial velocity upon detachment from the fall point.”

”Also, there is a lot of dust on the deceased’s body, and the distribution of this dust seems abnormal to me.”

After hearing Jiang An’s analysis, Li Jian contemplated for a moment.

He said, ”Regarding the first aspect, I don’t quite understand; that should fall under your scene investigation.”

”But, the falling point is a cliff edge on the wall; just a slight step forward would result in a fall.”

”Regarding the second aspect, the dust on the clothes—since the deceased was a construction worker, having dust on his body isn’t all that strange.”

At this point, Jiang An suddenly sensed that Li Jian wasn’t entirely trusting of his views.

”If the above two aspects can be explained, then why are there slight abrasions on the back of the deceased’s hand?”

”Slight abrasions?”

Jiang An added, ”These abrasions are very tiny; if you don’t look closely, you can barely see them.”

Upon hearing this, Captain Li suddenly heightened his alertness.

With years of interaction with forensic experts, he deeply understood.

Any damage on a body indicates the possibility of having had contact with someone else.

Moreover, Jiang An has profound insights into forensics and scene investigations.

The successful resolution of previous cases was inseparable from his deep insights in these two areas.

To some extent, Jiang An has already surpassed Wu You’s level in these two fields.

After thinking for two seconds, Li Jian put down his cup of tea.

”I’ll come over to your office to discuss it in detail soon.”

For a moment, he just felt his head buzzing.

The nerves that were in a relaxed state were tense again.

Just as Li Jian stood up, Mr. Ma’s call came through.

”Mr. Ma!”

”The case file information I gave you yesterday, please research it as soon as possible and give me an outcome today.”

”The director of the petition bureau called me again when I was going to work earlier, hoping we could handle this matter quickly so that they can reply to the parties involved.”

”I just promised over the phone that there’d be a result today.”

Upon hearing this, Li Jian fell into silence.

If it weren’t for Jiang An’s call, he could confidently say, ”There will be a written result right after the meeting this afternoon.”

”However, Jiang An’s remarks have taken away his courage to make that conclusion.”

If someone else had questioned this conclusion, Li Jian might not have paid much attention.

But this doubt was raised by Jiang An.

His queries must be given serious consideration.

The call fell into silence.

Sensing Li Jian’s hesitation, Mr. Ma spoke in a deep voice, ”What’s wrong? Do you think there’s an issue with this case?”

After all, when Li Jian left the office yesterday, he was fully confident in the case conclusion.

How did the perception change so drastically overnight?

Could new circumstances have suddenly arisen?

Li Jian responded, ”Mr. Ma, I had Jiang An examine the case file materials this morning.”

”Jiang An just called me, saying he wanted to re-examine the body.”

”Re-examine the body?”

”Is the body still there?”

Li Jian replied, ”Mr. Ma, the body is still stored in the freezer of the Jiangcheng Funeral Home.”

”The family was dissatisfied with the handling result of the death and hasn’t had the body cremated yet.”

After a brief moment of surprise, Mr. Ma asked, ”Does Jiang An have a different opinion?”

”Jiang An says this case is not simple and that there are some unusual circumstances.”

”Specifically, which circumstances are unusual can only be determined once I go and ask in detail.”

Instantly, Mr. Ma on the other end of the phone fell into silence.

Suddenly, he broke into a cold sweat.

Earlier, when the commissioner of the complaints bureau called him, he initially wanted to state that there was no problem with the case conclusion and quickly form a written report.

Now, thinking back, he was glad he didn’t say those words.

It was truly a thrilling experience of pulling back from the brink.

Otherwise.

The once excellent old detective could indeed have met with failure.

The one who raised this different opinion was Jiang An.

He is not just any officer; he is a seed player in the detective circles.

After contemplating for a long time, Mr. Ma advised, ”Since someone has discovered a problem, it must be clarified. Every aspect related to the case must be understood thoroughly.”

”Yes, Mr. Ma, but over at the complaints bureau...”

Mr. Ma said, ”Li Jian, proceed to investigate the case according to protocol.”

”I will personally coordinate with the complaints bureau.”

”Now that the case is back in our hands, we must have a highly responsible attitude and spirit, and we definitely cannot hastily conclude it.”

”Yes, Mr. Ma,”

”We will do our utmost to come up with an accurate conclusion promptly.”

After hanging up the phone, Li Jian quickly walked out.

Three minutes later, he entered the forensic office.

”Mr. Li!”

Li Jian nodded and directly asked, ”Jiang An, are you certain about the content you mentioned earlier on the phone?”

Initially, he thought it was merely Jiang An’s personal opinion.

Unexpectedly, both Jiang An and Zhang Yean nodded lightly.

”Both of you think there’s a problem?”

”Yes!”

Zhang Yean replied, saying, ”Mr. Li, I am very familiar with this death scene.”

”Back then, I followed Mr. Wu and my senior to conduct a thorough investigation of the scene.”

”However, after Jiang An’s analysis, I suddenly had significant doubts about my initial understanding.”

”Looking at it now, there are still some things that haven’t been explored clearly.”

”Moreover, there were some details that weren’t noticed at the time.”

Originally, Li Jian only had suspicions in his heart.

However, after hearing Zhang Yean’s thoughts, Li Jian suddenly had a foreboding feeling.

Could this case really have issues?

Immediately, Li Jian focused his attention on Jiang An.

”Jiang An, explain your basis and conclusions in detail.”

”This case has attracted many people’s attention, involving the complaints bureau, the police, as well as the deceased’s family and the general media.”

”Once a conclusion is established, whether it’s a criminal case or not, we will inform the family and the media immediately.”

”Therefore, we must be 100% sure of our judgment.”

After listening, Jiang An said, ”Currently, I just have suspicions, and I can’t overturn the previous conclusion.”

”Firstly, regarding surveillance, the monitoring layout of the construction site is not fully covered, leaving some blind spots.”

”Although the surveillance captured the deceased, Liu Jun, entering the construction site of Building No. 5 alone, it doesn’t rule out the possibility of others going in.”

”Secondly, at the confirmed falling location, I saw the deceased’s cup lying on the ground, with a part of fresh indentations on the edge, and tea and tea leaves spilled on the ground.”

”Supposing that the deceased was trying to get the cup that evening, he managed to climb to the 10th floor.”

”I believe he was still conscious, with his sense of balance intact.”

”Under this premise, would the deceased accidentally drop his cup on the ground?”

”Another thing that struck me as very odd.”

”The lid of the cup was still in place, so why were the water and tea leaves inside spilled on the ground?”

”So, when exactly did this cup fall to the ground?”

Zhang Yean also speculated, saying, ”If the deceased went upstairs to find the cup, then he shouldn’t have dropped the cup if he fell.”

”In the end, both the cup and the person would have fallen together.”

Hearing this, Captain Li Jian fell into contemplation, his mind flashing through the detailed information of the case.

Li Jian nodded slightly.

Gradually, his gaze became sharp,

He picked up the case file on the table and reviewed the original scene photos again.

As he looked at the photos, he said, ”Jiang An, keep going.”

Jiang An said, ”Regarding the dust on the deceased, besides being scattered on the clothes, there is dust on the back of the hand too.”

”Moreover, on the back of the deceased’s hand, there are few scratches formed by some sand particles.”

”Earlier, when discussing with my senior sister, we said that when we fall, we instinctively extend our hands to support ourselves on the ground to reduce the extent of the injury.”

”However, on this corpse, the dust is distributed on the deceased’s front and on the back of the hand.”

”Therefore, from the dust distribution, I believe that the deceased had an unconscious falling behavior before dying.”

After Jiang An’s analysis, Li Jian stared at the scene photos again.

A moment later, Li Jian closed the case file.

With a serious expression, he said, ”Go to the forensic autopsy center, and reexamine the body.”
