The Forensic Doctor Better Than a Detective

Chapter 112: Chapter 112: The Last Mile to Solve the Case

The interrogation had lasted for nearly two hours, yet there was still no progress.

Li Jian and Chen He were in the lowest of spirits.

They originally believed that finding the suspect would solve the case.

Now, the suspect was right in front of them, yet they still couldn’t make him confess.

When Li Jian and Chen He came out of the interrogation room, they happened to see Mr. Ma.

Mr. Ma said, ”You’ve worked hard.”

Li Jian said dejectedly, ”Mr. Ma, this suspect, Wang Dayong, is extremely cunning.”

Mr. Ma nodded.

He said, ”That’s not surprising.”

”I have worked in criminal investigation for many years and encountered many cunning suspects.”

”However, once objective evidence is placed in front of them, their psychological defenses completely collapse.”

”The reason this suspect denies the crime is mainly because we lack solid evidence.”

He paused briefly.

Mr. Ma said, ”Now, the only thing we must do is find objective evidence proving Wang Dayong committed the crime.”

Li Jian said, ”Mr. Ma, this case was only discovered eight months later.”

”In the past few days, we’ve investigated around the discovered bones and inspected the surveillance around Qin Xiao’s residence; the surveillance records have long been overwritten, and we found no valuable information.”

Mr. Ma said gravely, ”Indeed! After such a long time, many clues disappear.”

”But I believe justice may be delayed, but it will not be denied.”

”In this world, there is no perfect crime.”

”In more than 40 years of criminal investigation, I have seen many thorny cases.”

”But as long as we are good at discovering and digging deep, we can definitely find hard evidence.”

”Yes, Mr. Ma.”

Li Jian said, ”Originally, I was planning to give you a big gift after your meeting, but this interrogation was unexpectedly fruitless.”

Mr. Ma raised his hand and patted Li Jian’s shoulder.

”Mr. Li, cheer up!”

”The brave win when brought to a showdown!”

”The fact that you brought the culprit back is already a big gift for me.”

After a moment of thought, Mr. Ma asked, ”Did the Crime Scene leave any fingerprints of the culprit? That would be very solid evidence.”

Zhang Yean said, ”Mr. Ma, last night we extracted fingerprints from all items that could be touched at the Crime Scene, including the light switches, but found no valuable clues.”

”We speculate the perpetrator must have worn gloves during the crime.”

”We extracted some footprints from the crime scene floor, but they were not valuable for comparison.”

Upon hearing this, Mr. Ma frowned deeply.

He said, ”This perpetrator possesses very strong counter-investigation abilities.”

Li Jian added, ”Currently, through logical inference, whether it is the personal relationships of the two deceased, monetary exchanges, or materials provided by hospital nurses, all point to Wang Dayong as a major suspect.”

Saying this, Mr. Ma reminisced for a moment.

”When I was younger, I also encountered a case.”

”Although all of us knew he was the culprit, we had no evidence in hand.”

Zhang Yean asked curiously, ”And then? Was the culprit released later?”

”Of course not!”

Mr. Ma said firmly.

”Back then, the Crime Scene involved a shooting, and we couldn’t find any bullets.”

”To ensure the suspect was thoroughly brought to justice, we searched a 2-kilometer radius meticulously.”

”Eventually, we found a shell casing on a lawn.”

”We extracted the suspect’s fingerprints from the shell casing.”

”Even though the suspect never confessed until death, we still brought him to court.”

After a long while, Mr. Ma said, ”For any complicated case, as long as we don’t give up, we will surely find the key evidence to solve it.”

Captain Li Jian stated, ”Mr. Ma, rest assured.”

”This case encountered many difficulties currently, but we will not give up; we must ensure the perpetrator is held accountable by the law.”

”Good! I truly appreciate the vigor of our criminal investigation team, and I await your good news.”

From the interrogation room back to the office, Zhang Yuan made two cups of instant coffee in the pantry.

Jiang An took the coffee, his gaze fixed on the computer desktop in front of him.

These were the photos from last night’s Crime Scene investigation.

Jiang An sat down and clicked the mouse, observing each photo carefully.

Like any other case’s investigation, Jiang An always believed that the Crime Scene was the biggest source of clues.

In his view, if a case wasn’t solved, it meant there were still some pieces of evidence at the Crime Scene that hadn’t been discovered.

Jiang An opened the folder: the hallway, living room, bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, balcony of the Crime Scene...

He observed all the photos carefully, not missing any detail.

Meanwhile.

In the office of the Criminal Investigation Team’s captain, Li Jian and Chen He anxiously smoked cigarettes.

The once-clean ashtray was quickly filled with cigarette butts.

Chen He said, ”Mr. Li, when other suspects enter the interrogation room, they all have a sense of fear. Why doesn’t Wang Dayong have any fear?”

Li Jian took two puffs of the cigarette. ”I think the main reason Wang Dayong is fearless is that he believes we have no evidence against him.”

”On one hand, the surveillance has a limited retention period and will be overwritten.”

”On the other hand, on the day of the crime, he wasn’t seen directly by anyone.”

”Additionally, the location where he dumped the body is on the back hill, which is relatively secluded.”

Li Jian stood up and walked to the window.

”From this case, whether it’s the murder or disposing of the body, both are very concealed.”

”That’s why, under these circumstances, he naturally felt no fear in his heart.”

Chen He took a drag on his cigarette and said, ”Mr. Li, can we ask the elderly neighbor next to Qin Xiao to identify Wang Dayong?”

Li Jian shook his head.

”That night, the old man had been drinking and just vaguely saw someone carrying a garbage bag out from the stairwell.”

”However, the garbage bag had no identifying marks, so it can’t be determined.”

Chen He fell into contemplation.

He said, ”If that’s the case, is it really possible that this case is at a standstill?”

Li Jian said nothing, only gazing silently out the window while smoking a cigarette.

The furrows on both their brows were deep.

At this moment.

Jiang An had just turned to the photo of blood splatters in the living room.

Striped bloodstains were densely scattered on the wall.

Overall, it looked quite shocking.

Suddenly, he realized an issue.

The murderer used a chainsaw, so is the chainsaw still around?

If the chainsaw hasn’t been destroyed, could there still be traces of the victim’s blood on it?

After all, according to the earlier study on the victim Qin Xiao’s head, Jiang An believed her heart was still beating when her neck was severed.

When the carotid artery spurts blood, it would definitely stain the entire chainsaw.

Even if this chainsaw was later cleaned and no bloodstains are visible to the naked eye.

But, after spraying modern chemical agents, the bloodstains could still be revealed.

If mixed bloodstains from the two victims could be found on the murder weapon, it would completely prove that Wang Dayong committed the crime.

With this thought, a wave of joy surged in Jiang An’s heart, suddenly having a breakthrough moment.

Then, he said, ”Senior sister, we might need to go out for a bit.”

Zhang Yean was holding a half-drunk cup of coffee.

She asked in confusion, ”Go out? Where to?”

”We’re going to find the murder weapon.”

”Where will we look?”

”At Wang Dayong’s house.”

Zhang Yean said, ”After such a long time, is it possible the murder weapon might have been discarded?”

Jiang An replied, ”Whether it was discarded or not, we need to search around; we might have an unexpected discovery.”

”According to previously gathered data, Wang Dayong is in the interior renovation business, and his chainsaws are much higher quality than those of regular carpenters, which means they’re not cheap either.”

”The murderer might not be willing to discard that chainsaw.”

Zhang Yean thought for a moment and said, ”That makes a bit of sense.”

”If we can find that chainsaw and extract the bloodstains from it, we could completely confirm Wang Dayong’s murderous actions.”

minutes later.

Jiang An and Zhang Yean set off in a car.

Following the navigation address, they arrived at No. 58 Sanhe Village.

At this moment, in the courtyard of a two-story villa, there was only an elderly person.

Hearing the young pair knock, the elderly person turned and asked, ”What do you want?”

Zhang Yean said, ”Hello, grandma! We’re officers from the Jiangcheng Criminal Investigation Team.”

”These are my credentials.”

”We’re here to update household information, just need to record your address, ID number, and full name.”

The elderly person said, ”Alright! That’s simple.”

She then went inside to fetch the household register.

Jiang An’s peripheral vision was scanning the surroundings.

Suddenly, he noticed a canopy near the eastern courtyard wall.

Under the canopy, there were some renovation tools: a metal shovel, a ruler, a scaffold, and a small chainsaw.”

Jiang An turned and walked over, finding five chainsaws placed on the ground.

The wear on the handles of these five chainsaws varied.

He squatted down to inspect each chainsaw blade.

Noticing among the five, four chainsaw blades were shiny.

Only one chainsaw blade had some rust around the spindle.

Why is that?

Jiang An quickly processed in his mind.

Moreover, he noted the production date of the chainsaws.

Based on the production date, this rusty chainsaw was made in February last year, the most recent one.

Suddenly, he recalled mentioning during an investigation at Zhang Rui’s ex-husband’s house that chainsaw blades generally don’t rust unless a liquid has contacted them.

Chainsaw, liquid, rust.

In an instant, Jiang An understood.

He turned his head to see a toolbox with a wrench on the table beside him.

Jiang An found the corresponding wrench and quickly unscrewed the rusty chainsaw’s plastic casing.

minute later.

As he uncovered the casing, Jiang An was stunned.

Beneath the casing, patches of old bloodstains were visible.

Then, Jiang An took out his phone and dialed Li Jian’s number.

”Mr. Li, it seems we’ve found Wang Dayong’s murder weapon.”
