I Became a Medical Genius in the 80s

Chapter 134: Chapter 134: A Different Gaze

At the beginning, in order to eliminate the enemy’s distrust, Luo Xudong faked his death under the charge of treason. This matter was quite involved, especially having a great impact on his family, so he was given a settlement fee from above. This fee could not be made public, so it could not be openly handed over to his family.

The authorities, considering Luo Xudong’s situation, allowed him to handle this sum of money himself.

The money totaled ten thousand yuan. Regardless of whether it was then or now, it was not a small sum. He divided it into two parts, one larger and one smaller.

He handed over eight thousand to his comrade Qiao Xianhong, asking him to give it to his family once a month or a year. The remaining two thousand, he sent directly to his family in the name of his old superior, Wu Yuekai.

Although it was in the name of Wu Yuekai, he entrusted someone to hand it directly to the village committee. The money was placed in an envelope, sewn into a cotton-padded jacket as a mark, with a blue patch stitched on the lining.

Because the cotton-padded jacket was made by Mrs. Qin, she would know best whether there was a patch inside. As long as her attention was drawn, she would find the envelope inside at a touch!

But now it seems, not only had the eight thousand not been received, even the two thousand was not received either. Otherwise, the two thousand would have been enough for them to live for a long time, not to the point of poverty!

Luo Xudong was somewhat silent. Qiao Xianhong was once a comrade he had been through life and death with, someone he could relaxingly entrust his back to on the battlefield. Yet, he still couldn’t resist the temptation of profit.

As for the other sum of money, he couldn’t figure out where it went. That bundle contained only old clothes, who would pay attention to a few pieces of old clothes?

Seeing his demeanor, Wu Yuekai guessed somewhat and stopped asking detailed questions. It had been five or six years since the matter, and asking more now would only distract him.

”Today is the last time for message delivery, don’t come again in the future.” Wu Yuekai said.

Luo Xudong nodded, coming too often would raise suspicion.

”When are you going back to Beijing?” Luo Xudong asked.

Thinking of Beisitian, Wu Yuekai pondered for a moment and said, ”I’m planning to leave after some time.”

He would relay the message in another way, otherwise, if Zhou Jiren, whom he transformed into, just arrived and he left, it would attract the attention of those with intentions.

”Things around you are not peaceful either, be more cautious yourself.” Wu Yuekai advised.

Luo Xudong was clear about his situation. At Jishi Pharmacy, or rather all the managers of the Jishi Group, there were people secretly monitoring all around, including himself. A little carelessness could plunge him into a huge crisis. Once his identity was exposed, it would not only endanger his family who was within reach but also lead to the failure of the mission, with extremely adverse consequences.

This was also why, although he was in Qingzhou Town, he didn’t dare to return to Kao Village, which was only about ten miles away. Even running a circle around the vicinity of Kao Village posed significant risks.

”Also, restrain yourself a bit outside.” Wu Yuekai suddenly snorted coldly.

Luo Xudong looked at him in puzzlement.

”You are Zhou Jiren outside, your attention to that girl could easily put her in trouble.” Wu Yuekai reminded.

Luo Xudong chuckled bitterly, he hadn’t even realized until now how involuntarily he had started to pay attention to Beisitian.

Actually, it was because of that satchel, his own satchel, that he became suspicious of Beisitian’s identity. The family said they found a wife for him but didn’t elaborate, so he didn’t know who it was then.

He knew of Beisitian because she was Doctor Bei’s daughter. Since she was carrying that satchel, could it be that she was the bride his family found?

That was Luo Xudong’s initial speculation, but later when he saw Beisitian, she was completely different from the timid little girl in his impression.

The more he tried to probe, the more uncertain he became. Was this smart, capable girl truly the same Beisitian from the village?

Until she embroidered the shockingly impressive ’Phoenix Dance Dragon Plate’, he was initially convinced that she was different from that Beisitian. Later, when she said she had someone specially teach her when she was young, he knew this Beisitian was Beisitian, yet she wasn’t.

This answer was contradictory, but Luo Xudong didn’t want to speculate further. No matter who Beisitian truly was, what attracted his gaze was the current Beisitian!

If it weren’t for Wu Yuekai’s reminder, he might not even have known that his gaze on Beisitian had already differed from that towards others.

Luo Xudong left, and stepping out of that door, he would become Zhou Jiren again.

As for Beisitian, she didn’t go to the courtyard the next day, but to the town; she needed to hand in her work.

Though it was a short-term contract, Beisitian still produced a certain amount of writing.

After handing over her work to Feng Yunzhang, Beisitian prepared to return. This time, she didn’t intend to visit Jishi Pharmacy.

She felt that she had visited Jishi Pharmacy inexplicably often, and there was an undeniable part of her that wanted to go.

This might have been the same mood she had when visiting the courtyard. After all, she got along with Zhou Jiren very well; hearing him talk about the world was not only interesting but rewarding.

But Zhou Jiren was indeed a mystery, and recent events always made her feel a little uneasy, so it was better to minimize contact with this person.

”I thought I saw the wrong person last time, but it turned out to be you indeed!” came a slightly shrill female voice.

Beisitian looked up only to see Beisisi standing in front of her.

Beisitian stopped, silently observing her, searching in her mind for memories of this sister of the original owner’s.

Before this sister was born, the original owner was not living well. After she was born, the original owner’s life could be described as desperate.

The original owner was six years older than Beisisi, serving her from a young age, changing and washing her diapers was a norm. At six years old, the original owner often had to carry baby Beisisi, her arms always aching and stiff, yet she dared not make any mistake.

At the age of six, her arms and legs were small and thin. Du Chunmei did not provide enough food, often leaving her faint with hunger. Once, she almost dropped Beisisi, and was severely beaten by Du Chunmei.

Fortunately, Beidewang returned in time, otherwise, the original owner would have died at Du Chunmei’s hands that time.

As Beisisi grew, under the influence of Du Chunmei, she also began bullying Beisitian. After Beidewang’s death, the mother-daughter duo became even more brazen.

Under their oppressive abuse, the original owner even had thoughts of ending it all.

Recollecting this far, Beisitian’s gaze on Beisisi turned cold.

No wonder she had consumed so many fine herbs, yet still couldn’t restore her body to optimal health, nor could her spirit reach fullness—the root cause was those two!
