The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

Galahad did not begin planning by asking who wanted to go deeper.

That would have been the easiest question and, in his view, probably the worst one.

Want had very little to do with what the expedition could afford.

Instead, he waited until Tovin had been settled again and the older healer had confirmed that questioning him had not reopened any of his wounds. Then he gathered the people who still had enough strength to stand around the broad stone ledge beside the cistern. Darius came without his heavier shoulder plate, leaving the dark bruising along his ribs partly visible beneath his torn tunic. Iris carried the charcoal map and the few route notes she had made since entering the lower galleries. Sera brought her remaining arrows in two bundles and laid them down so everyone could see exactly how few were left. Milo arrived last, holding a clay cup of water and looking offended by the concept of standing.

Kael joined them after checking Derren one more time.

Derren was awake.

He had not asked again whether they were going after Lysa.

That made the silence worse.

Galahad rested both palms against the stone ledge. ”We know more than we knew an hour ago. That does not mean we know enough to start running downward.”

Milo took a drink. ”Strong opening. Very responsible. I dislike where this is going.”

Sera looked at him. ”You dislike everything.”

”Not water.”

”You complained about the drainage gallery.”

”That was aggressive water.”

Galahad ignored them, though the corner of his mouth moved slightly. ”Tovin says armed men took Lysa alive. He remembers rooms with tables. We have already found at least one room below the upper routes containing restraints, magical residue, and records of repeated mana exposure. We also found Rellan’s token there. That gives us a possible connection.”

Iris tapped the map with one finger. ”Possible. Not confirmed.”

”Correct.”

Kael appreciated that Galahad said it immediately.

They had too many pieces now for guesses to start feeling like facts.

Rellan’s badge had appeared at one station while his pack had appeared at another. His body had been found deeper underground. His token had been recovered from a room containing restraints and mana-channel diagrams. Tovin said Rellan fought to get Lysa back. Derren had heard a voice that sounded like Rellan begging not to be taken below.

All of it pointed somewhere.

None of it told them exactly what waited there.

Galahad looked toward the Iron Vanguard guide, who stood several paces away rather than joining the circle.

”You said the deeper branch near the drainage route connects to lower work levels.”

The man nodded.

”How many?”

”Depends what you count as a level.”

Milo sighed into his cup.

The guide looked at him. ”What?”

”Nothing. Continue being yourself.”

Galahad waited.

The guide rubbed at the back of his neck. ”There are older chambers cut beneath the extraction level. Some connect naturally. Some were opened later. Storage rooms. Core-processing rooms. Equipment rooms. Heat-channel access.”

”Medical rooms?”

The guide hesitated.

Galahad’s eyes narrowed.

”Answer.”

”I’ve seen treatment rooms.”

Milo stopped drinking.

Sera asked, ”Treatment for what?”

”Burns. Work injuries. Drake wounds.”

”Tables with restraints?”

The man did not answer.

That was not enough to condemn him.

It was enough to make the question heavier.

Galahad changed direction. ”How many people normally operate below?”

”I don’t know.”

”You work these routes.”

”I do not count every crew.”

”Estimate.”

The guide’s expression tightened. ”Twenty on a quiet day. More when shipments are moving.”

Darius finally spoke. ”Armed?”

”Some.”

”How many?”

”Depends.”

Darius looked at him.

The man corrected himself. ”Half, maybe.”

That gave the room a different weight.

They were not discussing sneaking past two guards.

Potentially ten armed fighters below, perhaps more, in terrain those fighters knew better than Galahad’s expedition did.

And that was before the drakes.

Galahad nodded toward the cistern’s eastern side. ”Extraction route.”

Iris took over.

”The upper drainage passage continues east. I checked the first hundred paces after the rest period. It narrows once, but there is room for a litter if we remove the side poles and rotate the frame. Beyond that, I found old cart grooves.”

The Iron Vanguard guide frowned. ”You went that far?”

”Yes.”

”When?”

”While you were arguing with Milo.”

Milo looked pleased. ”I contribute strategically.”

Iris continued before anyone encouraged him. ”Airflow strengthens after the narrowing. The ground rises. I smelled wet soil.”

Kael looked toward her.

”Actual soil?”

”Yes.”

That might mean they were getting closer to the outer forest.

The System could not confirm the whole route from here, but the directional scan supported her observation.

[Environmental Route Comparison]

Eastern upper drainage:

Airflow strength: increasing

Average temperature trend: decreasing

Geothermal interference: reduced

Known structural hazard: partial narrowing

Estimated extraction suitability: favorable relative to current alternatives

Kael looked at Galahad. ”The System—”

He stopped before the word escaped.

Milo glanced at him.

Kael corrected naturally. ”Everything I can read from the air and temperature agrees with Iris. East is improving.”

Galahad nodded.

”Good.”

Then he said the part everyone had been waiting for.

”We have two objectives that now compete with each other.”

His eyes moved toward the alcoves.

”Get the wounded out.”

Then toward the darker western passages.

”Find Lysa.”

Derren heard him from across the chamber.

He did not move.

Galahad continued. ”We do not solve that by dragging Tovin and Derren deeper. We also do not solve it by sending every capable fighter down and leaving the wounded with no protection.”

Milo leaned one hip against the stone ledge. ”There is also the small matter of the mountain attempting to become liquid.”

”Caldera,” Sera said.

”I was being poetic.”

”You were being wrong.”

”Both can happen.”

Kael glanced toward the water basin.

The surface remained calm.

That calm felt increasingly temporary.

The System reassessed.

[Environmental Reassessment]

Local cistern integrity: stable

Regional geothermal pressure: increasing

Thermal migration: continuing southwest to northeast

No immediate local failure detected

Forecast confidence beyond 90 minutes: low

Kael looked at Galahad. ”We probably have time here, but I wouldn’t treat the cistern as permanent shelter.”

”How much?”

”I can’t give you a real number.”

”Best estimate.”

”Ninety minutes before I stop trusting the current readings.”

That was not a countdown.

It was a planning limit.

Galahad accepted it.

”Then we use less.”

The older healer approached before anyone asked her.

”You are going to split them.”

Galahad looked at her.

”I am considering it.”

”No.”

Milo quietly took another drink.

Galahad folded his arms. ”Explain.”

”You have two patients who can die if the litters are dropped, overturned, overheated, or left without someone who knows what their breathing means. If you divide the healers, each litter gets one. That is the minimum.”

”Agreed.”

”You also have three walking wounded who will become carried wounded if the route goes badly.”

The injured Iron Vanguard fighter with the bandaged thigh looked offended.

She looked directly at him.

”You.”

He stopped looking offended.

Galahad nodded. ”So the extraction group needs both healers.”

”Yes.”

”Then who needs to guard it?”

The healer looked around.

”That is your problem.”

Milo whispered, ”I respect her commitment to specialization.”

Galahad stared at him.

Milo looked into his empty cup.

The Guild leader returned to the map. ”Sera.”

She looked up.

”How many arrows?”

”Twenty-three good. Four damaged enough that I would only use them close.”

”Mana?”

”Enough.”

”Any injury affecting your draw?”

”No.”

Galahad nodded. ”You stay with extraction.”

Sera’s expression tightened immediately.

”I can fight deeper.”

”I know.”

”Then why—”

”Because the extraction column will be slow, visible, and carrying two men who cannot defend themselves. If something comes down that drainage route, I want the person who can start killing it before it gets within ten paces.”

Sera looked toward Tovin’s alcove.

Then Derren’s.

Her jaw tightened.

She nodded.

”Fine.”

No drama.

She understood the assignment.

Galahad looked toward Milo.

Milo lifted his empty cup before the question arrived.

”I would like to formally remind the mission leader that I have approximately enough mana left to move a chair in an impressive manner.”

”How much after an hour of rest?”

Milo considered.

”Better.”

”That was not useful.”

”Perhaps a quarter of what I normally carry.”

Kael looked at him.

”That much?”

Milo shrugged. ”I regenerate faster when I stop preventing buildings from exploding.”

Sera said, ”That is useful information you could have shared earlier.”

”I wanted the recovery to feel dramatic.”

Galahad ignored the exchange. ”Extraction.”

Milo frowned.

”You too?”

”Yes.”

”Why?”

”Because the drainage route has water, narrow crossings, unstable stone, and two litters. You can reduce weight, cushion drops, move gas, redirect debris, and protect the healers without needing your largest spells.”

That shut Milo up.

For almost three seconds.

Then he nodded reluctantly. ”That is annoyingly correct.”

Galahad looked toward the man beside him. ”And you can recover mana while moving if nothing attacks.”

”Less efficiently.”

”But you can.”

”Yes.”

”Then extraction.”

Milo looked toward Kael.

”You will notice I am being punished for competence.”

Kael smiled. ”I’ll remember.”

That left fewer people around the ledge.

Galahad.

Darius.

Iris.

Kael.

And the question sitting between them.

Galahad looked at Darius first.

”You are injured.”

”I can fight.”

”I did not ask that.”

Darius studied him.

Galahad continued. ”If we split, the extraction group loses its strongest close-range defense.”

Sera spoke from the edge of the circle. ”It still has me, Milo, the guides, the workers, and anyone walking who can hold a weapon.”

Darius looked toward the eastern passage.

Then toward Kael.

The decision was not simple.

Kael knew why.

Darius was Kael’s commander.

His Shield.

Leaving Kael to descend without him would be almost impossible to justify.

Taking Darius deeper meant sending the wounded east without the strongest fighter in the expedition.

Galahad looked toward the Iron Vanguard guide. ”How likely is the upper drainage route to encounter mature drakes?”

The man thought before answering.

”Lower than the deeper roads.”

”Not zero.”

”No.”

”Armed people?”

”Possible.”

”Your people?”

”Possible.”

Again.

Not enough.

Galahad looked at Darius.

”You go deeper.”

Darius nodded once.

Kael had expected relief.

He felt something else.

Responsibility.

The extraction group would be weaker because of him.

Galahad turned toward Iris.

”You also go deeper.”

She nodded.

No surprise.

She was the best tracker they had, and they were following a missing person through unfamiliar underground routes.

Then Galahad looked toward Kael.

”You are coming because the System has repeatedly found hazards and movement we would otherwise miss.”

Kael nodded.

No argument.

Galahad’s eyes remained on him.

”You are also injured, and your mana is reduced.”

”I know.”

”Light?”

Kael paused.

Darius looked toward him.

Kael answered honestly. ”Too expensive right now. I can use it, but I shouldn’t rely on it.”

”Blood?”

”Available.”

”Ice?”

”Best of the three.”

”System?”

Kael almost smiled.

”Apparently more awake than all of us.”

Milo called from the bench, ”I resent that.”

Galahad nodded. ”Then that is the deeper team.”

Kael looked around.

”Four?”

”Four.”

Darius frowned slightly. ”Small.”

”That is the point.”

Galahad tapped the map.

”We are not launching a second expedition. We are conducting a limited search from a stable point using the strongest evidence we have. Four people move faster, make less noise, and can turn around without reorganizing a column of wounded.”

Iris added, ”And fewer people leave fewer tracks.”

”Exactly.”

Kael looked toward Sera.

”What if extraction needs help?”

Galahad had already considered it.

”We do not go deeper until extraction reaches the first upper junction.”

The Iron Vanguard guide frowned. ”That is twenty minutes east.”

”Good.”

”We lose time.”

”We gain certainty.”

Galahad looked toward Kael.

”Once the wounded column reaches that junction, they send one runner back if the route is open. If they cannot send a runner, we assume trouble and return.”

Milo raised one finger. ”I object to runners. The last several roads have contained drakes.”

Iris looked at the Iron Vanguard guide. ”Signal?”

He thought.

”There are old pipe lines through the upper drainage. Hit the iron three times at the junction and the sound carries back to the cistern.”

Galahad looked at him.

”Three strikes means clear?”

”Yes.”

”What means danger?”

”Continuous strikes.”

Milo nodded. ”Finally, a bell system I understand.”

Sera looked toward the guide. ”And if the pipe is broken?”

”Then you send someone.”

”That someone will be you.”

The man stared.

Sera smiled.

”Good talk.”

For the first time, he smiled back faintly.

The plan began taking shape.

That was different from a decision.

Galahad made everyone repeat their part.

Sera, Milo, both healers, Derren, Tovin, the walking wounded, route workers, and two of the Iron Vanguard fighters would move east through the upper drainage. They would stop at the first stable junction rather than continue all the way out. That gave the deeper team a fallback point while still moving the wounded closer to safety.

Galahad, Darius, Iris, and Kael would remain at the cistern until the three-strike signal confirmed the extraction column had reached the junction.

Only then would they return to the marked deeper branch.

Not the experimental room they had already passed.

Not every side chamber.

The route linked to Tovin’s statement and the white directional mark.

One objective.

Find enough evidence to determine whether Lysa could still be recovered.

If they found nothing within a fixed search window, they returned.

If they found overwhelming opposition, they returned.

If the Caldera worsened, they returned.

If the extraction signal changed to danger—

They returned immediately.

Derren hated the plan.

Kael could tell before Galahad explained it to him.

The injured man stared at the ceiling while Galahad spoke, jaw tight, hands curled against the blanket covering him.

When Galahad finished, Derren asked, ”How long are you giving her?”

”Forty-five minutes from the branch.”

”That’s nothing.”

”In terrain we don’t know, with the condition we’re in, it is what we can afford.”

”She could be farther.”

”Yes.”

Derren turned his head.

”So you stop because the clock says so?”

Galahad remained beside the litter.

”I stop when continuing means I am more likely to create four additional missing people than recover one.”

Derren’s eyes hardened.

”That sounds clean when you say it.”

”It isn’t.”

That answer changed Derren slightly.

Galahad continued. ”If we find a confirmed route and cannot reach her today, we bring more people back with the right supplies.”

”If there is a tomorrow for her.”

”I know.”

Derren closed his eyes.

The anger did not leave.

Neither did the fear.

But he nodded once.

Galahad stood.

Kael watched him walk away.

Milo came over after.

He looked down at Derren.

”I’ll be on your litter route.”

Derren opened one eye.

”That supposed to comfort me?”

”No.”

”Good.”

Milo nodded. ”I am also tired of lying.”

Derren almost smiled.

Milo continued. ”But if the road tries to throw you into a hole, I will make a heroic effort to complain while stopping it.”

”That better.”

”Excellent.”

The two litters were prepared again.

Kael helped tighten one of the straps around Tovin’s frame. The healer checked it immediately after him and tightened it another inch.

Kael looked at her.

She looked back.

”Prince does not mean competent with medical straps.”

He accepted that.

Sera reorganized her remaining arrows between her hip quiver and a smaller bundle tied to the litter frame so she could reach replacements while walking.

Milo filled two waterskins and placed one inside his coat.

Iris gave Sera a copy of the cistern route marks.

Darius handed one of the workers his spare short blade.

No one made speeches.

They were too tired.

When the extraction group finally started east, the chamber felt emptier immediately.

Kael stood near the cistern basin and watched Tovin disappear first into the upper drainage passage. Derren followed several paces behind.

Milo walked beside the second litter.

Before leaving, he looked back.

”Kael.”

Kael raised an eyebrow.

Milo pointed at him.

”No dying.”

Kael smiled.

”You too.”

”I have already scheduled mine for a more convenient week.”

Sera shoved him lightly through the passage.

”Walk.”

His voice echoed back.

”Hostility during a vulnerable moment.”

Then they were gone.

The cistern became quiet.

Only four members of the original expedition remained.

Five, counting the Iron Vanguard guide, who had stayed long enough to confirm the signal system before returning to the entrance.

Galahad looked at him.

”You’re going east?”

The man nodded.

”My instructions are extraction.”

”Fair.”

He hesitated.

Then looked toward the western passage.

”You should not go too far below.”

Galahad studied him.

”Why?”

The guide looked toward Kael.

Then Darius.

”I have seen people go down healthy and come back wrong.”

That was the first thing he had said that sounded less like evasion and more like warning.

Kael frowned.

”Wrong how?”

The man shook his head.

”Sick. Burned without flame. Shaking. Magic acting badly.”

Milo would have been useful for that.

Kael immediately thought of the altered drake.

The mana-channel diagrams.

The refined energy cylinders.

Galahad asked, ”Did you ever ask why?”

The guide laughed quietly.

”I learned not to.”

”And now?”

The man looked toward the corridor where the extraction group had disappeared.

”Now I think that was a mistake.”

He left before Galahad could ask more.

The remaining four waited.

That might have been the hardest part.

There was nothing to fight.

Nothing to investigate yet.

Just twenty minutes of listening for metal through stone.

Darius sat for the first time Kael could remember since entering the lower levels.

He rested his sword across his knees and closed his eyes.

Not sleeping.

Breathing.

Kael sat nearby.

Iris checked her knives.

Galahad stared at the charcoal map.

After several minutes, Kael looked toward Darius.

”The pressure you used earlier.”

Darius opened one eye.

Kael continued. ”Against the drakes.”

”You waited until Milo left.”

Kael smiled faintly. ”He would interrupt.”

”Correct.”

”What was it?”

Darius looked toward the cistern water.

”Aura.”

”I know that.”

”Then why ask?”

Kael stared.

Darius smiled.

The similarity to Milo irritated him.

”You know what I mean.”

Darius remained quiet for a moment before answering.

”What most knights first learn is reinforcement. Body. Weapon. Movement. Keep Aura close because close is easier to control.”

Kael nodded.

”Projection comes later?”

”For those with sufficient control.”

”What you did wasn’t just projection.”

”No.”

Darius looked toward the western passage as though considering how much explanation belonged here.

”Eventually a knight learns that Aura does not need to strike someone to affect them.”

Kael remembered the juveniles lowering themselves.

The pressure in his own chest.

”Pressure.”

”That is what most people call it.”

”Is it stronger Aura?”

”Sometimes. More often denser Aura used correctly.”

Darius touched two fingers against his sword.

”A man can scream with a weak voice. Another can whisper and command a room. Aura is similar.”

Kael considered that.

”What does killing intent do?”

Darius’s eyes moved toward him.

”You have felt killing intent.”

”Yes.”

”It gives the pressure direction.”

Kael frowned.

”Direction?”

”If I release Aura around you without hostility, your body feels pressure. If I release the same Aura while intending to kill you, your instincts recognize something else inside it.”

”Fear.”

”Among other things.”

Darius’s expression became more serious.

”A weak fighter may freeze. Lose balance. Struggle to breathe. Some fall unconscious. But do not mistake it for magic that automatically defeats weaker people. Discipline matters. Experience matters. Will matters.”

Kael nodded.

”And after that?”

Darius looked at him.

”After what?”

”Aura Pressure.”

Galahad glanced up from the map.

Iris stopped checking a knife for half a second.

Kael noticed.

Darius did too.

The commander smiled faintly.

”Learn the stage you are standing on before asking how high the tower goes.”

Kael frowned.

”That means there is more.”

”That means you ask too many questions.”

Kael almost pushed.

Then iron rang through the stone.

Once.

Everyone froze.

Second strike.

Third.

Silence.

The extraction column had reached the junction.

Galahad stood immediately.

Rest finished.

Conversation finished.

Darius rose and put his shoulder plate back on despite the bruising beneath it.

Iris tied her pack closed.

Kael checked his sword.

Galahad folded the charcoal map and put it inside his coat.

”Forty-five minutes from the branch,” he said. ”No heroics. No chasing unknown movement. We find evidence. If evidence becomes a recoverable person, the mission changes. Until then, we remain a search team.”

Darius nodded.

Iris nodded.

Kael nodded.

They left the cistern.

The route back to the marked branch felt shorter without the litters.

That was dangerous.

It encouraged speed.

Iris refused to let it.

She retraced every turn exactly, checking the marks she had left and stopping twice when fresh vibrations shifted dust across the floor.

Kael’s System remained active.

[Environmental Scan]

Geothermal activity: elevated

Airflow toward east increasing

Deep-route temperature: rising

Humanoid movement: none detected within immediate scan

They reached the white directional mark.

The narrow branch waited beside it.

Kael stared down the passage.

No voices.

No footsteps.

Only warmer air.

Galahad looked toward Iris.

She crouched.

”Tracks are clearer now without everyone walking over them.”

”How many?”

”Several.”

”Recent?”

”Yes.”

”Direction?”

She followed them with her eyes.

”Mostly down.”

Galahad looked toward Kael.

”Anything?”

Kael focused.

The System extended farther through the narrow route.

Heat from the Caldera made the image messy.

Still—

[Directional Scan]

Multiple faint heat signatures detected beyond current range

Classification unresolved

Distance: significant

One intermittent humanoid-range signature detected

Kael’s attention sharpened.

”One possible person.”

Darius looked at him.

”Possible?”

”Heat is interfering.”

”How far?”

”I can’t tell well enough.”

Galahad looked into the dark passage.

The forty-five-minute search window had not even begun yet.

Already there was something.

Not proof.

Not salvation.

Something.

He drew his sword.

”Scout first. Twenty paces.”

Iris disappeared into the darkness.

Galahad waited five breaths.

Then followed.

Kael came next.

Darius took the rear.

The passage descended.

Not steeply.

Deliberately.

The walls changed after the first turn.

Natural volcanic stone gave way to worked surfaces again.

Old iron hooks.

Cut channels.

A discarded strip of cloth near the wall.

Iris stopped beside it.

Blue.

Kael’s stomach tightened.

Not the same strip Tovin wore.

Similar cloth.

Galahad crouched.

”Party cloth?”

Iris did not touch it immediately.

”Could be.”

The System offered no identification.

Correct.

Galahad bagged it anyway.

They kept moving.

Ten minutes into the search window, they found the first locked door.

Iron.

Recent.

Not old.

A narrow viewing slit had been welded shut from the outside.

Darius touched the frame.

”Built to keep something in.”

Iris looked at the hinges.

”Or people.”

Galahad tested the handle.

Locked.

Kael’s System responded.

[Structural Analysis]

Lock mechanism: conventional

Door reinforcement: moderate

No large heat signature immediately behind

Then another line appeared.

[Faint biological heat detected]

Kael stopped breathing for half a second.

”Someone may be inside.”

Galahad looked toward him.

”Alive?”

”Maybe.”

Iris went to the viewing slit.

Sealed.

Darius looked at the lock.

”Quiet or fast?”

Galahad thought.

”Quiet.”

Iris took out two thin tools.

She knelt.

Darius watched the corridor.

Kael watched the System.

Galahad watched Iris.

Thirty seconds.

A minute.

The lock clicked.

Iris caught the handle before it moved.

Then slowly pulled.

The door opened inward.

The smell reached them first.

Sweat.

Blood.

Something medicinal.

The room beyond was dark.

Galahad lifted his lantern.

A figure lay against the far wall.

Human.

Thin.

Hands bound in front.

Head lowered.

Kael’s System reacted.

[Living heat signature confirmed]

Condition: weak

Immediate threat indicators: none detected

Galahad entered first.

The figure moved.

Barely.

A woman.

Her hair hung across her face.

One sleeve had been torn away.

Dark bruising covered the visible arm.

Kael’s heart began beating faster.

Galahad crouched several feet away.

”Can you hear me?”

No answer.

Iris moved along the wall, checking corners.

Darius remained at the door.

Kael stepped closer.

The woman raised her head.

Not much.

Enough for the lantern to catch her face.

She looked at Galahad.

Then Kael.

Then their weapons.

Fear came first.

She pressed herself farther against the wall.

Galahad immediately lowered his sword.

”We are not here to hurt you.”

Her eyes moved toward his coat.

The Guild insignia.

Something changed.

Her lips moved.

No sound.

Galahad leaned closer.

”What?”

She tried again.

”Guild?”

Galahad’s expression tightened.

”Yes.”

Her eyes filled.

She did not smile.

She did not relax.

She simply whispered one word.

”Late.”

No one answered.

Because she was right.

They had come.

They had also come late.

Iris moved toward the bindings.

The woman jerked away.

”Wait.”

Iris stopped.

”Trap?”

The woman shook her head weakly.

”Bell.”

Iris looked down.

A thin wire ran from the binding ring into the wall.

She had almost missed it.

So had everyone else.

Kael’s System had too, until he focused directly.

[Mechanical trigger detected]

Wire tension system

Probable alarm function

Galahad looked toward Iris.

”Can you disable it?”

”Yes.”

She moved carefully.

Kael looked at the woman.

”What’s your name?”

Her eyes found his.

For several seconds she said nothing.

Then:

”Lysa.”

The search window no longer mattered.

The mission had changed.
