The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

The Oakridge school reopened without banners.

Kael considered that a personal sacrifice.

There were no musicians either, no procession from the manor, no row of Black Dragons standing in ceremonial formation, and—after a surprisingly long argument with Lily the previous evening—no new sign declaring the building some grand academy of Blackwood.

It was simply the Oakridge schoolhouse.

The morning sun fell across repaired windows and a roof that no longer leaked. The warped boards had been replaced where necessary, the surviving benches repaired instead of discarded, and the front writing board cleaned until the old scratches beneath its surface became visible again. Six newly purchased primers sat beside older surviving books on one shelf, while reusable writing boards and pieces of chalk had been stacked neatly near the front.

Twenty-four children stood outside.

Master Rennick looked at Lily.

”You said twenty-one.”

Lily looked toward the families gathered along the road.

”I said twenty-one expected.”

”There are twenty-four.”

”Three more came.”

”I can count.”

Kael smiled.

Rennick turned toward him immediately.

”Do not.”

”I said nothing.”

”You were pleased.”

”I am allowed to be pleased that children came to school.”

”You are allowed to be pleased quietly.”

Kael looked toward Walter, who had claimed he would not attend.

Walter stood several paces away carrying a basket of apples.

Kael pointed at him.

”You said you had work.”

”I did.”

”You’re here.”

”So are the apples.”

”That explains nothing.”

Walter glanced toward the schoolhouse. ”Rennick asked if I could bring something for the children.”

Rennick called from the doorway, ”I did not.”

Walter ignored him.

Kael smiled.

”You wanted to come.”

”No.”

”You did.”

”I wanted to make sure you didn’t bring musicians.”

Kael looked toward Lily.

She was already laughing.

The reopening was modest, but it was not small.

Families had come from Oakridge itself and from nearby farm clusters attached to the village. Some parents stood with their children because they wanted to see what House Kael had actually restored. Others clearly intended to leave the moment the lesson began because livestock, fields, kitchens, carts, and household work had not disappeared merely because a school reopened.

Several adults who had expressed interest in evening lessons were present too.

Walter recognized some of them.

He pointed discreetly toward an older man standing near a fence.

”He’ll come tonight.”

Kael lowered his voice.

”How do you know?”

”Asked me yesterday whether Rennick would laugh at him.”

”What did you say?”

”That Rennick laughs at everyone.”

”That is not comforting.”

”It worked.”

The old teacher emerged from the schoolhouse holding a small wooden slate.

Conversation quieted.

Rennick looked at the children first.

Then the parents.

Then Kael.

His expression clearly said brief.

Kael sighed.

Apparently he was actually expected to speak.

He stepped forward.

Several children immediately straightened.

One younger boy stared at Kael’s clothes rather than his face.

Kael looked across the gathering.

He had planned something longer.

Walter’s warning from yesterday returned to him.

Those people remembered when the school closed.

They remembered when nobody cared enough to reopen it.

Kael decided not to explain Blackwood’s entire education policy to them.

”This building was a school before I came to Blackwood,” he said. ”It stopped being one because the people responsible for keeping it open stopped doing the work required to keep it open.”

The adults became quieter.

Kael continued, ”Repairing the roof was the easy part. A school needs teachers who are paid, materials that can be replaced, families willing to send their children, and enough sense to change the schedule when farm work changes.”

Walter grunted approvingly.

Kael ignored him.

”This is not the solution to every literacy problem in Blackwood. It is one school reopening in one village. We will see what works, what fails, and what needs to change.”

Rennick’s expression softened slightly.

Very slightly.

Kael looked toward the children.

”So learn something.”

A few of the older children smiled.

One younger girl raised her hand.

Kael blinked.

Rennick sighed.

”You have started it now.”

Kael pointed toward the girl. ”Yes?”

”Do we have to learn everything?”

Several parents laughed.

Kael looked toward Rennick.

The old teacher folded his arms.

Kael smiled.

”No. But Master Rennick will probably try.”

The children laughed.

Rennick did not.

”That is enough prince.”

Kael stepped away.

”Brief.”

”Acceptable.”

High praise.

The children entered in groups rather than rushing through the door. Rennick and the two regular instructors separated the youngest learners from those already able to recognize letters or perform basic arithmetic. Joren Hal’s fourteen-year-old daughter stood uncertainly near the older students until Rennick spoke with her privately, tested her reading with one of the primers, and placed her with a smaller advanced group rather than forcing her beside children half her age.

Kael watched from outside the doorway.

No System notification appeared immediately.

Good.

The school had opened.

That did not mean it had succeeded.

Inside, one of the support instructors wrote a line of letters on the board while Rennick corrected the way another held chalk. Children whispered. Someone dropped a writing slate. One boy asked when they would eat. Another insisted he already knew numbers because he had ten fingers.

The place sounded alive.

Walter stepped beside Kael.

”Well?”

Kael glanced at him.

”Well what?”

”You’re making that face.”

”What face?”

”The one where you think you’re about to change the world.”

Kael smiled faintly.

”One village.”

”Good answer.”

”I’ve been trained.”

”Poorly.”

Kael laughed.

The System finally appeared.

[Oakridge Education Restoration]

Status: OPERATIONAL — LIMITED

Opening-day child attendance: 24

Expected regular attendance: Unknown

Adult evening interest: 16 confirmed / additional inquiries pending

Instructor capacity: Adequate at current scale

Material capacity: Adequate at current scale

Long-term effectiveness: Insufficient Data

Recommended evaluation points: 30 days / seasonal transition

Kael focused on the final two lines.

Exactly.

The opening mattered.

Attendance after a month would matter more.

Walter looked toward the school windows.

”My wife would’ve liked this.”

Kael turned toward him.

Walter rarely spoke about her beyond the fact that she had taught him to read.

He continued before Kael could respond.

”She used to say people acted like reading was a noble skill because nobles kept most of the books.”

Kael smiled slightly.

”Did she teach anyone besides you?”

”Three children. Sometimes neighbors.”

”You never mentioned that.”

”You never asked.”

Fair.

Walter looked through the window again.

”She would’ve argued with Rennick.”

”About what?”

”Everything.”

Kael laughed.

Walter smiled.

Then his expression became more thoughtful.

”Don’t make reading a test of who’s better than who.”

Kael looked at him.

”What do you mean?”

”There’ll be people who learn fast. People who don’t. Adults embarrassed they’re sitting beside someone younger who reads better. Children who work fields better than they read letters.”

Walter shifted the apple basket to his other hand.

”If people start thinking the school exists to prove who’s stupid, they won’t come.”

That was not something in Kael’s development reports.

It should have been.

He nodded.

”I’ll tell Rennick.”

Walter stared.

”You think he doesn’t know?”

Kael considered.

”No.”

”Then leave him alone.”

Kael laughed.

Again.

The entire morning seemed to involve people telling him not to interfere with things he had helped create.

Perhaps that was becoming his actual job.

The first adult lesson began after sunset.

Kael did not attend.

That was deliberate.

Walter did.

That was apparently also deliberate, though he insisted he was only escorting an older neighbor who ”would’ve gotten lost on a road he’s walked for forty years.”

Kael received the attendance number the following morning.

Nineteen adults.

More than expected.

No celebration.

No immediate second school.

Master Rennick’s written report contained only:

Too many for one table arrangement. Manageable. Several require basic letter recognition. Bring more chalk.

Kael approved more chalk.

Then he moved on.

That felt almost unnatural.

The Blackwood Adventurers’ Guild continued operating in the background.

Derrick Sorn’s survey escort returned on schedule the following day. No one was injured. The survey clerk complained about mud, one bridge approach, and Derrick’s refusal to let him lean over a damaged retaining edge while taking measurements.

Derrick considered that proof of successful leadership.

The survey clerk considered it interference.

The merchant consortium paid the full reward anyway.

The Guild recorded both positions.

Some of the route observations were voluntarily shared with House administration, including a warning that one western bridge remained structurally usable but the approach had begun eroding along one side. Halric Denne added it to a future inspection route rather than declaring an emergency.

Kael did not attend the contract review.

Galahad mentioned that fact in the weekly summary.

The prince successfully remained absent. Guild survived.

Kael considered writing back.

He did not.

That was greater restraint.

Three more days passed.

Not in silence.

In work.

Stonebrook’s first two houses reached enclosed framing. The third frame began once Rowan’s seasonal carpenter arrived, proved that he still knew what he was doing, and accepted two weeks of paid skilled work. Rowan did not hand him an entire construction crew on the first morning. He watched him work first.

The final two houses remained behind the others.

No one complained.

Much.

The agricultural settlement household accepted its second placement option near the manor-side farming area after negotiating access to a smaller tenancy than the father originally wanted. The mother preferred the closer clinic. The father preferred more land.

Neither received everything.

They chose the compromise.

The System recorded their placement without pretending the decision guaranteed long-term retention.

That brought all five received pilot households into active placements.

Kael did not raise the ten-household cap.

Edwin had not even needed to threaten him.

Bellhaven’s wheelwright household continued earning small local work. Joren Hal’s family moved into Oakridge and began repairing the chimney of their chosen house before transferring all of their belongings. His daughter attended the second school session and reportedly corrected one younger student’s arithmetic loudly enough that Rennick separated them.

Tomas Pell ordered two new grain-storage barrels from Joren.

Two.

Kael was not informed until the weekly settlement summary.

He appreciated that.

Walter appeared twice at the manor during those days.

Once to argue about drainage near a field path that had never appeared on Kael’s priority list.

Once because he wanted to know why three young men had asked whether the Adventurers’ Guild paid people to collect mushrooms.

”It does,” Kael said.

Walter stared.

”For mushrooms.”

”Certain mushrooms.”

”I’ve spent fifty years telling people to stop picking things they don’t recognize.”

”That sounds like useful expertise.”

Walter narrowed his eyes.

”No.”

Kael smiled.

”You could advise the Guild.”

”No.”

”Field identification.”

”No.”

”Seasonal gathering.”

”Kael.”

”Fine.”

Walter pointed a finger at him.

”I already work.”

”I know.”

”You have a habit of finding someone’s useful skill and deciding they need another job.”

Kael stopped.

That was fair.

Walter continued, ”If Galahad asks me whether a plant grows near a field, I’ll answer. I’m not sitting behind a Guild desk.”

”Understood.”

Walter’s expression softened.

”Besides, half those adventurers need someone telling them where not to walk.”

”That sounds suspiciously like Guild work.”

Walter left before Kael could finish.

The next Guild summary included a note that an unnamed agricultural adviser had spent twenty minutes explaining crop boundaries to three F-rank gatherers near Oakridge.

Kael said nothing.

On the fifth morning after the school reopened, the eastern cellar remained unchanged.

Kael checked anyway.

Heartbeat present.

Shell stable.

No change in warmth.

No crack.

No unusual reaction.

He entered the observation into the ledger.

The System provided no new information.

That was reassuring.

When Kael returned upstairs, Edwin was waiting with a letter.

”Greywatch.”

Kael stopped.

Not Damien.

Greywatch.

Victor.

He took the letter immediately.

The seal belonged to the Third Legion.

Kael broke it.

The message was formal and short.

Victor Ravenshade’s current administrative rotation at Greywatch had concluded. He had completed the assigned logistics, supply, and command-observation period attached to the Third Legion’s local staff. His final assessment would remain part of his military record, and he had been released to return to House Kael unless future orders required otherwise.

Kael read the last line again.

”Released?”

”Yes.”

”When?”

Edwin glanced toward another document.

”Two days ago.”

Kael looked up.

”He’s already traveling.”

”Presumably.”

”Why didn’t he write?”

Lily entered carrying another report.

”He may enjoy surprising people.”

Kael considered Victor.

”Yes.”

That was extremely plausible.

The System appeared.

[House Personnel Update — Victor Ravenshade]

Greywatch administrative rotation: COMPLETE

Third Legion assignment status: Released from current rotation

House Kael affiliation: Active

Black Dragon status: Active

Knight Examination: Passed

Church consecration: Not completed

Formal Imperial Knight status: Not recognized

Estimated return: Pending travel confirmation

Kael smiled.

Victor was coming home.

Unlike Damien, Victor had not left under a six-month frontier evaluation. His Greywatch work had always been a separate administrative and military-learning rotation, and apparently it had now reached its natural end.

Kael dismissed the System.

”Tell Darius.”

Edwin looked at him.

”He already knows.”

Kael frowned.

”Grom?”

”Also.”

”Why am I last?”

”You are not last.”

”Who is?”

”Hugo.”

Kael considered.

”Acceptable.”

Lily smiled.

The matter should have ended there.

It did not.

Because Victor arrived before lunch.

The first warning was noise from the outer road.

Not alarm.

Laughter.

Kael was leaving the manor with Lily when a rider came around the bend at a pace fast enough to attract attention and slow enough that Grom would not immediately threaten to break his legs.

Black hair.

Travel cloak.

Sword at his side.

Victor Ravenshade raised one hand.

”BLACKWOOD!”

Several workers turned.

Kael stopped at the top of the manor steps.

Lily sighed.

”He could have entered normally.”

”No.”

Victor slowed his horse near the courtyard and looked around as though he had taken a wrong turn.

Then he looked at Kael.

”What did you do?”

Kael stared.

Victor dismounted.

”What?”

Victor pointed toward the road behind him.

”There is a Guild.”

”Yes.”

”A real Guild.”

”Yes.”

”With a sign.”

”Most buildings have signs.”

Victor pointed toward the growing manor-side settlement.

”There are more houses.”

”Yes.”

”And I passed two people wearing matching iron badges.”

”Guild adventurers.”

Victor stared at Kael.

”How long was I gone?”

Kael smiled.

”Long enough.”

Victor looked personally offended.

”You built an entire institution while I was counting grain carts.”

”That sounds like a productive rotation.”

Victor walked forward and clasped Kael’s forearm before pulling him into a brief embrace.

Then he stepped back.

”You look the same.”

”So do you.”

”That is unfortunate. I expected to become more impressive.”

”You became better at counting wagons.”

Victor’s face changed.

”Do not.”

Kael laughed.

”Marcus would love you.”

”Marcus sent Damien bridge questions.”

”He did.”

Victor stared.

”Damien already left?”

The humor faded slightly.

Kael nodded.

”Frontier evaluation. Six months.”

Victor looked toward the Black Dragon yard.

”When?”

”Several days ago.”

Victor exhaled.

”I missed him.”

”Yes.”

”That idiot could’ve waited.”

Kael smiled faintly.

Victor knew that made no sense.

He continued, ”Did he take enough socks?”

Kael laughed.

”Too many.”

”Good.”

The courtyard door opened behind them.

Grom emerged.

Victor immediately straightened.

”Deputy Commander.”

Grom looked him over.

Travel dirt.

Sword.

Pack.

Horse.

No visible injury.

”Late.”

Victor frowned.

”My orders did not give a return hour.”

”You should have guessed.”

Victor smiled.

”I missed you too.”

Grom stared.

Victor’s smile remained.

Then Grom stepped forward and clasped his forearm.

”Welcome back.”

Victor’s expression softened.

”Good to be back.”

Darius arrived several minutes later.

Victor’s posture changed more noticeably this time.

”Commander.”

Darius nodded.

”Ravenshade.”

No Sir.

Correctly.

Victor had passed the Imperial Knight Examination, but like Damien, he had not undergone Church consecration and certification. His standing had not changed simply because he spent time at Greywatch.

”Report after you eat,” Darius said.

Victor nodded.

”Yes, Commander.”

Darius looked toward the horse.

”Your animal first.”

Victor glanced at it.

”I was going to—”

”Stable.”

Victor sighed.

”Yes, Commander.”

Kael smiled.

Victor pointed at him.

”Do not.”

The Black Dragon yard noticed him quickly.

Hugo Stone arrived before Victor finished removing his saddlebags.

Apparently Edwin had been wrong.

Hugo had learned.

”You’re back!”

Victor turned.

Hugo hit him hard enough on the shoulder to nearly move him.

Victor stared.

”You could say hello.”

”I did.”

Milo appeared next.

Kael had no idea where he came from.

He simply existed beside the stable door holding an apple.

Victor looked at him.

”Milo.”

”Victor.”

”You look terrible.”

”I’ve been working hard to maintain it.”

Victor looked toward the apple.

”Is that mine?”

Milo took a bite.

”Impossible to prove.”

Victor laughed.

Sera approached behind him with considerably more dignity.

She looked Victor over once.

”Still loud.”

”Still unfriendly.”

”Good.”

They clasped forearms.

Jessa, Tavin, Perrin, Iris, Elias, Marcus, and others arrived as word spread through the Black Dragon compound.

Victor greeted Elias.

Then stopped.

Looked at him.

Looked again.

”Sir Elias.”

Elias smiled immediately.

Victor’s face twisted.

”Oh, this is going to be unbearable.”

”Sir Elias Thorn.”

”I know your name.”

”You should practice.”

Victor turned toward Marcus.

”Please tell me you became less annoying.”

Marcus looked at him.

”Sir Marcus Wintermere.”

Victor closed his eyes.

”Greywatch was better.”

Everyone laughed.

The humor faded only when Victor noticed the two consecrated knights carried themselves slightly differently.

Not superior.

Settled.

He looked toward Elias.

”You did it.”

Elias nodded.

”Yeah.”

Victor glanced toward Marcus.

”You too.”

”Yes.”

Victor touched the old Knight Examination token secured inside his own travel pouch.

Kael noticed.

He said nothing.

Victor had his own decision to make eventually.

No one needed to force it today.

Victor’s formal report took place after lunch.

Kael attended with Darius, Grom, Edwin, and Victor.

No entire council.

No unnecessary audience.

Victor sat across from Darius with several Greywatch documents placed neatly in front of him.

Kael stared at the organization.

Victor noticed.

”What?”

”You arranged your papers.”

Victor looked insulted.

”I could arrange papers before Greywatch.”

Grom said nothing.

Victor looked toward him.

”I could.”

Darius began the report before the argument continued.

Victor’s rotation had focused on Third Legion administration rather than combat.

Supply tallies.

Ration distribution.

Replacement equipment.

Horse feed.

Road schedules.

Leave rotations.

Wagon movement.

Storage losses.

Delayed deliveries.

Unit reports.

The unglamorous machinery that kept soldiers alive before a sword was ever drawn.

Victor had hated parts of it.

He admitted that.

”I thought half the work was counting what everyone already knew they had.”

Darius leaned back.

”And now?”

Victor looked toward his papers.

”Now I think most people don’t know what they have.”

Kael smiled.

That sounded familiar.

Victor continued.

A unit commander might report three hundred soldiers.

The quartermaster needed to know how many actually drew rations that morning.

A stable record might list fifty horses.

The farrier needed to know which six were losing shoes too quickly.

An ammunition store could look full until someone compared it against expected consumption during extended operations.

Greywatch had taught him that armies failed slowly before they failed loudly.

Kael stopped smiling.

That was good.

Victor looked toward him.

”What?”

”Nothing.”

Darius continued the review.

”What did you do poorly?”

Victor hesitated.

Then answered.

”First week, I treated delayed reports like disobedience.”

Grom’s eyes narrowed slightly.

Victor continued, ”One outlying post kept submitting supply counts late. I wanted their clerk disciplined.”

”What was actually happening?” Darius asked.

”The road messenger was covering two routes because the second rider was injured.”

”So?”

”I was solving the clerk instead of the route.”

Kael leaned back.

Definitely familiar.

Victor looked toward him.

”Stop making that face.”

”What face?”

”The one where you’re going to turn my suffering into a lesson.”

”I didn’t say anything.”

”Your face did.”

Darius almost smiled.

Almost.

Victor’s second mistake involved feed.

He had approved moving extra horse feed toward one section because reported consumption had increased.

The increase turned out to be temporary.

A cavalry detachment had passed through.

By the time Victor corrected the assumption, another store had become tighter than necessary.

”No disaster,” Victor said. ”But I moved supplies based on a number before asking why the number changed.”

Kael looked toward Edwin.

The steward was absolutely enjoying this.

Victor noticed.

”Why are both of you looking at me like that?”

Edwin answered calmly.

”You have returned to the correct territory.”

Victor frowned.

The report continued.

Not all of it was mistakes.

Victor had apparently become good at identifying bottlenecks in wagon scheduling and had reorganized one weekly delivery sequence after realizing two supply convoys were competing for the same narrow loading yard.

Kael stopped.

”Staging.”

Victor looked toward him.

”What?”

”Nothing.”

”No, say it.”

”We had the same problem with the temporary market.”

Victor stared.

”With merchants?”

”Yes.”

”And I spent three days solving a military supply problem a prince solved with vegetable wagons.”

Kael smiled.

”Basically.”

Victor looked toward Darius.

”I want to return to Greywatch.”

”No.”

Grom laughed.

Victor had also spent time observing how Third Legion officers divided authority between specialists. Stable masters did not become infantry commanders merely because horses mattered. Quartermasters controlled stores without commanding battlefield formations. Engineers could halt unsafe work without gaining authority over every soldier nearby.

The same lesson Blackwood had been learning through the Guild.

Different institutions.

Similar principles.

At the end, Darius closed the assessment summary.

”You benefited.”

Victor sighed.

”Yes.”

”You hated it.”

”Yes.”

”Good.”

Victor frowned.

”Why is that everyone’s favorite answer?”

Kael laughed.

Darius continued, ”You understand logistics better than when you left.”

”Yes.”

”Administration?”

”Yes.”

”Patience?”

Victor hesitated.

Grom answered.

”No.”

Victor pointed. ”I was going to say improving.”

”That is not the same thing.”

The report ended with Victor officially returning to ordinary Black Dragon duty under Darius and Grom.

No immediate promotion.

No new command title.

No reward simply because he came home.

His Greywatch experience entered his service record.

That was enough.

The System appeared.

[House Personnel Update — Victor Ravenshade]

Greywatch Administrative Rotation: COMPLETE

Returned to Blackwood: CONFIRMED

Black Dragon duty status: ACTIVE

Experience gained:

Military logistics

Supply administration

Operational scheduling

Resource accountability

Command-support observation

Knight Examination: Passed

Church Consecration: Pending / not initiated

Formal Knight Status: Not recognized

Kael dismissed it.

Victor leaned back.

”So what did I miss?”

Kael looked at Edwin.

Edwin looked toward the stack of reports.

Victor followed his gaze.

”No.”

Kael smiled.

”You asked.”

Victor pointed toward the window.

”Show me.”

That was more reasonable.

So Kael did.

Victor’s tour of changed Blackwood began with the Guild.

He stopped outside beneath the sign.

BLACKWOOD ADVENTURERS’ GUILD

He stared for several seconds.

”You really named it that.”

Kael frowned.

”What is wrong with the name?”

”Nothing.”

”You sound disappointed.”

”I expected something more dramatic.”

”We considered dramatic.”

Galahad, standing just inside the entrance, said, ”We did not.”

Victor looked toward him.

”Galahad.”

”Ravenshade.”

”You’re in charge?”

”Yes.”

Victor looked toward Kael.

”You gave him a building?”

Galahad folded his arms.

Kael smiled.

”Several rooms.”

Victor entered.

He immediately noticed the Registry and Contract Counter.

The Quest Board.

The Commons.

The rank notices.

The iron badges.

He watched an F-rank adventurer hand Mira paperwork and receive it back because one line had been left blank.

Victor smiled.

”I like her.”

Mira looked up.

”You haven’t registered.”

Victor’s smile faded.

”I am Black Dragon.”

”I know.”

”Then I don’t need to register.”

”Correct.”

Victor looked toward Kael.

”What just happened?”

”She likes accuracy.”

Nalia laughed from the contract side.

Victor spent nearly half an hour walking through the building.

He did not need the entire Guild explained from the beginning. Kael gave him the essentials.

Civilian institution.

Galahad operates it.

F through S.

Only F, E, and D currently present.

No A-rank adventurers.

Black Dragon separate.

Guild security separate.

Infirmary limited.

Quest Board contracts.

Ten-percent ordinary brokerage fee charged to clients above the posted reward.

Victor stopped.

”The adventurer gets the full board reward?”

”Yes.”

”Good.”

”You sound surprised.”

”I spent weeks with quartermasters. Hidden deductions make people angry.”

That was probably true everywhere.

They passed the Commons.

Milo sat at a table.

Again.

Victor stared.

”You work here?”

Milo looked around.

”No.”

”Then why are you always sitting here?”

”The chairs have embraced me.”

Galahad called from across the room.

”He occasionally helps with magical assessments.”

Milo pointed toward him.

”Occasionally is doing important work in that sentence.”

Victor smiled.

Kael shook his head.

Milo’s role made sense.

He could step away from main scenes sometimes because the Guild had actual uses for his control and magical expertise without suddenly turning him into a permanent employee.

Victor looked toward Sera, who was speaking with an applicant near the assessment yard.

”Her too?”

”Field evaluations sometimes.”

Victor nodded.

”Grom?”

”Security and escalation coordination when needed.”

”Iris?”

”Tracking questions. Scout support when something crosses into Black Dragon concern.”

Victor looked around again.

”So everybody has been busy.”

Kael glanced at him.

”Yes.”

That answer seemed to matter.

Victor had left Blackwood and returned to find that nobody had been frozen in place waiting for him.

The Guild had given some familiar people additional places to use their skills.

The Black Dragon still remained their actual organization.

No one had been replaced.

No one had vanished.

They simply had more work to do.

Victor nodded slowly.

”Good.”

Oakridge surprised him more.

Kael brought him there the following afternoon.

The school was in session.

Victor stopped outside when he heard children reciting letters through the open window.

”You opened a school?”

”One.”

Victor looked toward him.

”Only one?”

Kael smiled.

”See? You already understand Blackwood.”

Walter was outside repairing the handle of a farm tool beneath a tree.

Victor noticed him.

”Walter.”

Walter looked up.

”Which Victor are you?”

Victor stared.

Kael immediately laughed.

Walter’s face remained perfectly serious.

”Ravenshade.”

”Ah.”

”You know who I am.”

”Wanted to make sure.”

Victor looked toward Kael.

”He got worse.”

”He says I got less foolish.”

”That’s worse.”

Walter returned to the handle.

Victor glanced toward the school.

”You involved in this?”

”No.”

Walter paused.

”A little.”

Kael smiled.

Walter pointed the tool at him.

”Don’t.”

Victor laughed.

They entered only after the lesson ended.

Rennick refused to interrupt class simply because Victor had returned from Greywatch.

Victor liked him immediately.

That concerned Kael.

The school attendance had already changed after several sessions.

Not dramatically.

Twenty children had attended the second full day.

Two families had kept older children home for agricultural work.

One new child had arrived.

Adult attendance remained strong.

The System displayed the first tiny amount of operational data.

[Oakridge School — Early Operation]

Opening attendance: 24 children

Current regular participation estimate: 19–22

Adult evening participation: 17–20

Instructor workload: Manageable

Material usage: Within estimate

Literacy improvement: Too early to measure

Victor read none of that.

He stood at the old writing board looking at basic arithmetic problems.

”This is what you were doing while I counted grain carts?”

Kael nodded.

Victor looked toward the children leaving with slates under their arms.

Then toward Kael.

”Worth it.”

Simple.

No joke.

Kael smiled.

”Yeah.”

That evening, Victor returned to Black Dragon quarters.

Not a guest room.

Not a special officer residence.

His place.

Kael found him sitting outside after dinner with his travel pack still partly unpacked.

”Didn’t finish?”

Victor looked toward it.

”I got distracted.”

”By?”

”Hugo. Elias. Marcus. Milo stole food.”

”That happens.”

”Iris asked about Greywatch roads for twenty minutes.”

”That also happens.”

Victor looked toward the lights of the manor-side settlement.

”The place really changed.”

”Some.”

”More than some.”

Kael sat beside him.

Victor remained quiet for a moment.

Then he asked, ”Is Damien okay?”

”As far as we know. He wrote.”

”Can I read it?”

”Parts.”

Victor looked offended.

”Parts?”

”He complains about things.”

”So do I.”

”Exactly.”

Victor smiled.

Kael told him about the convoy.

The quartermaster.

The bridge notes for Marcus.

The socks.

Victor laughed hardest at that.

Then he became quiet again.

”I should’ve been here when he left.”

”You had your assignment.”

”I know.”

”He knows.”

Victor nodded.

A little of the weight left his expression.

They sat quietly.

The Guild’s lights were visible in the distance.

The building no longer looked new from here.

Just occupied.

Kael thought about the last few days.

The Guild had entered normal operation.

The school had opened.

Five settlement households had now received placements.

Stonebrook’s houses were still rising.

The dragon egg remained alive.

Walter had returned to Kael’s daily life as though he had never left it.

And Victor Ravenshade had come home from Greywatch with more patience than when he left.

Perhaps not much more.

But measurable.

Kael smiled.

Victor noticed.

”What?”

”Nothing.”

”You’re doing the face.”

”What face?”

”The development face.”

Kael frowned.

”I do not have a development face.”

”You absolutely do.”

Victor leaned back.

”What happens next?”

Kael looked toward Blackwood.

For once, he did not have a giant answer.

”Guild keeps working. School keeps teaching. Houses get finished. We see whether the new families stay.”

Victor waited.

”And?”

Kael smiled faintly.

”And we don’t break anything that currently works.”

Victor stared.

”Greywatch changed you.”

”I didn’t go to Greywatch.”

”Then something worse happened.”

Kael laughed.

The System appeared quietly at the edge of his vision.

Kael dismissed it.

Victor was still looking toward him.

”You went blank again.”

”Thinking.”

”Dangerous.”

”Go unpack.”

”Tomorrow.”

”You’ve been back two days.”

”Exactly. I’ve been busy.”

Kael stared.

Victor smiled.

Some things had not changed at all.

That was good too.
