The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

The passage descended more sharply than Kael expected.

Within a few dozen paces, the sounds of fighting behind them became muffled by layers of volcanic stone. The juveniles still screamed somewhere above and behind, and occasionally the tunnel trembled when something heavier struck the chamber they had left, but the noise no longer surrounded them.

That should have made the descent easier.

It did not.

The air grew hotter with every turn.

Kael could feel the difference through his boots first. The soles warmed against the black stone, then the heat began rising around his ankles. Thin cracks appeared along the walls, some glowing faintly orange deep inside. Others released threads of pale vapor that vanished almost as soon as they appeared.

Iris moved several steps ahead of everyone else, testing the route before allowing Derren’s litter forward. She no longer relied on the strangers who had pointed them toward the lower passage. They had remained behind in the chamber, leaving the expedition alone again.

Galahad had accepted that without argument.

They needed distance.

They needed Derren alive.

They needed information.

And after everything that had happened since entering the western forest, Kael had begun appreciating how often the smartest decision was not the most satisfying one.

The System flickered.

[Environmental Analysis]

Ambient temperature: rising

Subsurface thermal activity: increasing

Airflow: steady

Trace gas concentrations detected

Current exposure: tolerable

Recommendation: avoid enclosed depressions with poor airflow

Kael immediately looked toward Iris.

”Stay off anything that drops too far below the main passage.”

She glanced back.

”Gas?”

”Yes.”

Milo, walking beside Derren’s litter, wiped sweat from his forehead.

”I deeply resent that you keep discovering new ways for the ground to kill us.”

Kael looked at him. ”You preferred the drakes?”

”I preferred when my enemies had faces.”

Sera walked several paces behind them with her bow lowered but ready, periodically checking the tunnel ceiling. ”The drakes had faces.”

”Bad faces.”

Derren opened one eye from the litter.

”You talk this much all the time?”

Milo looked down at him.

”You’re recovering.”

”How can you tell?”

”You’re complaining about me.”

The healer pressed two fingers against Derren’s neck, checking his pulse without stopping. ”Save your strength.”

Derren closed his eye again.

Milo leaned toward Kael.

”He likes me.”

”He barely knows you.”

”Exactly. No time for disappointment.”

Despite everything, Kael smiled.

Then Iris stopped.

Everyone behind her stopped immediately.

Galahad moved forward. ”What?”

Iris pointed down.

The tunnel floor changed.

Natural volcanic stone ended several feet ahead. Beyond it, rectangular black blocks had been fitted together into a descending walkway.

Worked stone.

Old.

Much older than the braces they had seen near the previous chamber.

Kael crouched.

The blocks were dark enough to match the surrounding rock, but the edges were too regular to be natural. Narrow channels had been carved along both sides of the walkway, disappearing downward with the slope.

Darius approached.

”Drainage?”

Iris touched one channel.

”Maybe.”

Kael focused.

The System reacted.

[Structural Analysis]

Artificial stonework detected

Age estimate: insufficient data

Primary function: unresolved

Secondary features: heat-channeling grooves / drainage compatibility

Structural integrity: moderate

Warning: several blocks show subsurface erosion

Kael stood.

”Some of the blocks are hollow underneath.”

Galahad looked at the descending path. ”Can we use it?”

”Yes. Carefully.”

Iris took over from there.

She moved one block at a time, tapping the stone with the end of a knife before putting her weight down. When she found one that answered with a different sound, she marked the edge with a small chalk stroke.

The route worker carrying the front of Derren’s litter watched her.

”You’re marking the bad ones?”

”Yes.”

”I can remember.”

”The person behind you might not.”

He nodded.

That was Iris.

No speech.

No argument.

Just making the route safer for the next person.

The walkway descended another hundred paces before opening into a broad stone corridor.

There were doors here.

Actual doors.

Heavy timber reinforced with iron straps, set into carved chambers along both sides.

Most stood open.

Several were broken.

One had been burned nearly black.

Kael slowed.

Milo stopped beside him.

”This is not a tunnel anymore.”

”No.”

Sera looked toward the nearest doorway.

”Station?”

The route woman who had come with them from the kiln sites shook her head.

”Not one I know.”

That mattered.

The people maintaining the western roads apparently did not know every part of what existed beneath them.

Galahad looked toward her. ”You have never been here?”

”Not this deep.”

”How far have you gone?”

”Lower road. Storage caves. Outer hatchery passages.”

”Not this?”

”No.”

Galahad studied her for a moment.

Then looked at Iris.

”Check the first two rooms. No one enters anything deeper.”

Iris disappeared into the left chamber.

Sera took the right.

Darius remained in the corridor with Kael.

Milo stayed near Derren and the healer.

Galahad watched both directions.

The first room contained broken shelving.

Nothing else.

The second had old iron hooks embedded in the wall and the remains of wooden racks.

Sera stepped back out.

”Empty.”

Iris emerged a moment later carrying something.

A boot.

Not old.

Not burned.

A modern leather walking boot.

Galahad’s expression changed.

”Where?”

”Under a broken shelf.”

Derren opened his eyes.

The healer tried to stop him from moving.

He ignored her.

”That his?”

Galahad looked toward him.

”Whose?”

Derren swallowed.

”Rellan.”

Silence settled over the corridor.

Kael looked at the boot.

Derren lifted his head slightly.

”He wore dark brown boots. Brass buckle.”

Iris turned the boot.

A small brass buckle sat near the ankle.

The leather was scraped heavily along one side.

Galahad took it carefully.

”Certain?”

Derren stared.

”Not completely.”

Good.

He was injured.

Tired.

Working from memory.

Not certainty.

Kael appreciated the distinction.

The System did too.

[Evidence Update]

Object: leather boot

Possible association: Rellan Dorr

Confidence: low

Supporting detail: witness recognizes color and brass buckle

Identification remains unverified

That was exactly what the System should do.

Not tell him whose boot it was.

Help him keep track of what they actually knew.

Galahad gave the boot back to Iris.

”Bag it.”

She did.

Derren lowered his head.

The healer gave him a look.

”Done?”

”For now.”

”Good.”

They continued.

The corridor became stranger the deeper they went.

Some rooms were clearly old storage chambers.

Others had newer additions.

Iron shelves.

Water barrels.

Recently replaced hinges.

A stack of cut firewood that could not have been here for years.

Someone used these passages.

Possibly several someones.

Kael resisted the urge to inspect everything.

That would be stupid.

The mission was not to search every room while carrying a wounded man through an active drake nest.

Galahad made the same decision.

”No side searches unless something is visible from the corridor.”

Iris nodded.

Sera did too.

Milo sighed dramatically.

”I was about to begin my career as an archaeologist.”

Darius looked at him.

”No.”

”Very brief career.”

The corridor turned.

Heat hit them.

Not gradual this time.

A wave.

Everyone stopped.

The System appeared instantly.

[THERMAL WARNING]

High-temperature zone ahead

Airflow unstable

Localized heat pulses detected

Possible vent cycle

Kael raised one hand.

”Wait.”

Galahad stopped the litter.

Kael moved forward beside Iris.

The corridor ended at a stone bridge.

Not a long one.

Maybe thirty feet.

But beneath it was a split in the earth.

Orange-red light moved far below.

Heat rose in pulses.

Milo stared.

”No.”

Sera looked at him.

”No what?”

”No bridge over lava.”

”It isn’t directly over lava.”

Milo looked down.

”It is glowing.”

”That isn’t the same thing.”

”It is close enough for my objection.”

Darius approached the bridge.

”Can it hold?”

Kael focused.

[Structural Analysis]

Bridge construction: reinforced volcanic stone

Current integrity: 62%

Primary weakness: central support

Repeated thermal expansion detected

Safe load estimate: limited

That was more useful.

Kael looked at the litter.

”We cannot all cross together.”

Galahad nodded immediately.

”Groups.”

The System highlighted something else.

[Heat pulse interval detected]

Average cycle: 19–26 seconds

Kael watched the fissure.

The glow brightened.

Heat surged upward.

Then faded slightly.

”Wait for the heat to drop before crossing.”

Milo frowned.

”You can tell when it will?”

”Approximately.”

”Approximately is carrying a lot of responsibility today.”

Galahad began assigning the crossing.

”Iris first. Check the far side.”

She crossed alone.

Light steps.

Fast.

The bridge creaked once beneath her.

She reached the opposite side and immediately searched the next corridor.

”Clear.”

Galahad looked toward the healer.

”Derren next.”

The healer shook her head.

”Not alone.”

”Two carriers and you.”

”Three people plus litter.”

Kael looked at the System.

Safe load confidence: moderate

He studied the central support.

”No stopping in the middle.”

The route workers lifted the litter.

The healer moved beside them.

Galahad waited for the heat to fall.

”Now.”

They crossed.

The bridge groaned.

Derren clenched his teeth but made no sound.

The orange light beneath them brightened halfway across.

Kael’s System flashed.

[HEAT PULSE EARLY]

”Move!”

The carriers accelerated.

Heat erupted upward.

The healer threw herself over Derren as they reached the far side.

A blast of hot air struck them.

No flame.

Enough to make everyone recoil.

They made it.

Milo stared at the bridge.

”I withdraw my earlier objection.”

Kael looked at him.

”You objected to crossing.”

”I now object to standing here.”

Sera crossed next with Galahad.

Milo went after them.

He reached the middle.

The bridge cracked.

Everyone heard it.

Milo froze.

Darius immediately said, ”Keep moving.”

Milo looked down.

A thin fracture had opened beneath his left boot.

”I am suddenly motivated.”

He moved.

The stone behind him broke away.

A piece dropped into the fissure.

Milo jumped the final few feet and landed badly on the far side.

Sera caught his arm.

He looked at her.

”You continue to save me from embarrassment.”

”You almost fell into a volcanic crack.”

”Yes. Embarrassing.”

Kael and Darius remained.

The bridge had lost part of its edge.

The System updated.

[Integrity: 47%]

Bad.

Kael looked toward Darius.

”You first.”

Darius raised an eyebrow.

”You are lighter.”

”That is why I should go last.”

Darius stared at him.

Kael realized how ridiculous that sounded.

Darius smiled faintly.

”Prince.”

”Fine.”

Kael crossed.

He moved quickly.

The System marked the central section.

[Avoid left-center block]

Kael stepped right.

The bridge held.

He reached the far side.

Darius came last.

Halfway across, a heavy sound rolled through the tunnels behind them.

Not close.

Still powerful.

The hatch-mother.

The bridge vibrated.

Kael’s System flashed.

[Structural instability increasing]

Darius ran.

The central support cracked.

The bridge dipped.

Milo’s eyes widened.

”Commander!”

Darius jumped.

The bridge failed behind him.

Not completely.

The middle section collapsed downward, leaving two broken ends separated by nearly twelve feet.

Darius landed on the far side and rolled once.

Then stood.

Milo stared at him.

”You are too large to do that gracefully.”

Darius brushed dust from his sleeve.

”I did not ask.”

Galahad looked back at the broken bridge.

”That helps.”

Sera nodded.

”Drakes?”

”The smaller ones might jump.”

Darius looked down into the fissure.

”The large one will not.”

Good.

A natural barrier created by bad luck.

Or good luck.

Depending on which side you stood on.

They continued.

The corridor widened again.

Then Iris stopped so suddenly that Kael nearly walked into her.

”Light.”

Everyone looked.

Not volcanic glow.

Lantern light.

Warm yellow.

Ahead.

Voices too.

More than three this time.

Kael’s System reacted.

[Directional Scan]

Multiple humanoid heat signatures ahead

Count: 9–13

Movement patterns: organized

No immediate approach detected

Galahad lowered his voice.

”How many?”

”About ten. Maybe more.”

Milo leaned against the wall.

”Could they be bakers?”

Sera looked at him.

”In here?”

”Hope is important.”

Darius gestured toward Iris.

She moved ahead alone.

Several minutes passed.

Long enough that Kael started feeling the tension in his shoulders.

Then Iris returned.

”Guard post.”

Galahad frowned.

”Recognize anyone?”

”No.”

”Same symbol as the three before?”

”Yes.”

Kael noticed the wording.

No names.

No assumptions.

Only what Iris had seen.

Galahad asked, ”Do they know we are coming?”

”Not yet.”

”Can we avoid them?”

”No.”

”Numbers?”

”Eleven visible. Maybe more in side rooms.”

Darius looked toward Derren.

The healer shook her head.

”He needs rest soon.”

Galahad closed his eyes for half a second.

Then opened them.

”Then we talk first.”

Milo sighed.

”Diplomacy twice in one day.”

”Try not to ruin it.”

”No promises.”

The party advanced openly.

There was no point pretending stealth with Derren on a litter.

The corridor opened into a much larger worked chamber.

Kael immediately saw the difference from the one above.

This place was active.

Lanterns hung from iron hooks.

Tables had been set against one wall.

Several crates were stacked beneath a raised wooden platform.

Weapons rested in racks.

People moved through the room with purpose.

Some wore leather.

Some wore metal armor.

A few had no armor at all.

But nearly every one of them displayed the same unfamiliar iron emblem somewhere on their clothing or equipment.

Conversation stopped.

Hands moved toward weapons.

Galahad raised one empty hand.

”We are not here for a fight.”

A woman near the center looked at Darius.

Then at Kael.

Then at the wounded man on the litter.

Her hand remained on the hilt of her sword.

”You came through the upper passage?”

”Yes.”

”Impossible.”

Milo looked over his shoulder.

”The drakes also disagreed.”

The woman ignored him.

Her attention stayed on Galahad.

”Who are you?”

”Galahad Charney.”

Her eyes changed slightly.

Recognition.

Maybe.

”Guild?”

”Yes.”

That drew murmurs.

Kael noticed.

They knew there was a Guild.

Perhaps only by rumor.

Perhaps more.

The woman looked toward Kael.

”And him?”

Galahad did not answer for him.

Kael did.

”Kael Asterion.”

The reaction was immediate.

Not dramatic.

Not kneeling.

No one here seemed interested in that.

But several faces hardened.

One man muttered something under his breath.

Kael could not hear the words.

The woman’s expression cooled.

”Prince.”

”Yes.”

Milo quietly said, ”Good observational skills.”

Sera elbowed him.

The woman looked toward Darius.

”You I know.”

Darius said nothing.

Most people did.

She finally looked at the litter.

”What happened to him?”

”Found west of the Guild route,” Galahad said. ”Injured. We are taking him home.”

”Then you are moving the wrong direction.”

”We noticed.”

That almost earned him a smile.

Almost.

Galahad continued.

”We need a place for the healer to examine him again and a route east.”

The woman studied the party.

Then the passage behind them.

”You crossed the broken bridge?”

”It broke after us.”

Her expression changed.

”That is bad.”

Milo looked around.

”Apparently we are collecting those.”

The woman turned toward one of her people.

”Check lower east.”

A young man nodded and left through another corridor.

Galahad watched.

”East goes out?”

”Eventually.”

”Eventually keeps coming up.”

”This is volcanic ground.”

”That does not answer the question.”

”It answers most questions.”

Fair.

The woman gestured toward a bench beside the wall.

”Put the injured man there.”

The healer moved immediately.

Derren’s litter came down carefully.

The moment his weight settled, the healer began checking the bandage.

Galahad stayed standing.

Darius stood near him.

Kael looked around.

The room contained more people than he had expected.

Not prisoners.

Not frightened workers.

Armed.

Organized.

A few carried scars that suggested experience.

One man repaired a spearhead at a table.

Another was writing in a ledger.

A third cleaned blood from a short sword.

No one had introduced the group.

So Kael did not name them in his mind.

Not yet.

The emblem meant something.

That was all.

The woman looked at Galahad.

”What were you doing this far west?”

”Looking for missing people.”

That changed the room.

Small reactions.

A glance.

Someone stopping mid-motion.

The woman did not move.

”Who?”

”Rellan Dorr. Two others with him.”

No response.

”Derren. Found.”

The healer did not look up.

”Alive.”

Galahad continued.

”And older disappearances.”

The woman’s jaw tightened by a fraction.

”People disappear in these woods.”

”So I have been told.”

”Then why ask us?”

”Because we found one missing man’s belongings much farther west than they should have been.”

Silence.

Kael watched faces.

The System offered nothing.

Good.

This was not a magic lie detector.

This was people.

Iris watched too.

She was better at it than he was.

The woman finally asked, ”What belongings?”

Galahad did not answer immediately.

Smart.

Instead:

”What do you know about the white route marks?”

Another reaction.

This one larger.

A man near the weapon rack turned his head.

The woman noticed.

So did Iris.

Galahad continued.

”One copied mark diverted a party off the Guild route. The real marks appear farther west. Someone copied them.”

The woman looked toward Kael.

”Your Guild came into the western forest because someone painted a line?”

”No,” Galahad said. ”We came because people followed it and disappeared.”

The answer landed differently.

The woman’s expression did not soften.

But she listened.

Before she could respond, boots sounded from the eastern corridor.

The young man she had sent returned quickly.

Too quickly.

His face told them before he spoke.

”East cut is closed.”

The woman turned.

”How?”

”Collapse.”

”Fresh?”

”Yes.”

Darius asked, ”Passable?”

The young man looked at him.

”Not with a litter.”

Milo closed his eyes.

”Of course.”

Galahad asked, ”Other route?”

The woman pointed deeper.

”Lower crossing.”

The route worker beside Derren went pale.

”No.”

Everyone looked toward him.

It was the first thing he had said since entering the chamber.

The woman frowned.

”You know it?”

The worker nodded.

”Old magma channel.”

”Still open.”

”Not if the pressure is rising.”

Kael looked at him.

”How do you know pressure is rising?”

The worker pointed toward the wall.

There.

Kael had not noticed.

A narrow metal pipe disappeared into the stone.

Water dripped from its lower edge.

Not cold water.

Steam hissed when droplets touched the floor.

The man said, ”That line should be cool.”

The System flashed.

[Environmental Scan]

Geothermal pressure variance increasing

Localized temperature rise confirmed

Subsurface movement: gradual

There it was again.

The Caldera was changing.

Not collapsing yet.

Not erupting.

But changing.

Galahad looked toward Kael.

Kael nodded.

”He’s right. Heat is increasing below us.”

The woman studied him.

”How do you know?”

Kael ignored the question.

”Where is the lower crossing?”

She pointed toward a heavy door at the far side of the chamber.

”Down two levels.”

”Distance to eastern exit?”

”From there? Maybe an hour.”

The healer looked up.

”Not at this pace.”

”How long?”

”With him?”

She looked at Derren.

”Two.”

The woman looked toward Derren.

Then toward Galahad.

”If the lower crossing stays open.”

Another vibration rolled through the chamber.

Very faint.

Everyone stopped talking.

A hanging lantern moved.

Only slightly.

Milo looked upward.

”I miss the forest.”

Sera glanced at him.

”The forest had voices.”

”I miss the normal parts of the forest.”

Galahad made the decision.

”We rest ten minutes.”

Darius looked at him.

”Ten?”

”Healer needs it. Mage needs it. Everyone needs water. Then lower crossing.”

Milo looked deeply touched.

”I have never respected leadership more.”

”You get eight.”

”Respect withdrawn.”

A few people in the room almost smiled.

That mattered.

Not everyone here hated them automatically.

Kael sat near the wall.

His shoulder hurt more now that they had stopped moving.

The System appeared quietly.

[Status Check]

Right shoulder strain: persistent

Upper back trauma: moderate

Hydration deficit: developing

Recommendation: water / reduced load

Kael took his waterskin.

Useful.

Simple.

Exactly what he needed.

Milo dropped onto the floor beside him.

For once, he did not speak immediately.

His face remained pale.

Kael handed him the waterskin after drinking.

Milo accepted.

”You know.”

Kael looked at him.

”I know what?”

”I am beginning to think this mission was ranked too low.”

Kael smiled.

”You wanted respectable work.”

”I did.”

”You complained when Galahad gave it to you.”

”That was before the flying furnace.”

Sera sat nearby, checking her arrows.

”You mean the Ash-King?”

Milo pointed at her.

”Do not dignify it.”

Kael looked toward Darius.

The commander stood several paces away, drinking slowly.

His injured ribs were still bothering him.

Kael could tell because Darius kept his left arm slightly closer to his body.

But what stayed in Kael’s mind was something else.

The tunnel.

The drakes hesitating.

The weight in the air.

Milo apparently had the same thought.

He lowered his voice.

”That thing he did.”

Kael looked at him.

Milo nodded toward Darius.

”The pressure.”

”You noticed.”

”I am exhausted, not blind.”

Kael leaned back against the wall.

”I’ve seen him project Aura before.”

”So have I.”

”Not like that.”

”No.”

Milo watched Darius for another moment.

”As a mage, I would like to formally complain that knights are apparently hiding additional categories of nonsense.”

Kael smiled.

”You should ask him.”

Milo looked horrified.

”Now?”

”No.”

”Good.”

That was enough.

No lecture.

No explanation while everyone was bleeding and trapped underground.

The question could wait.

Across the room, Galahad spoke quietly with the armed woman.

Kael could not hear everything.

Only pieces.

”...upper bells...”

”...not ours...”

”...lower station...”

”...three days...”

Interesting.

Iris had positioned herself nearby without looking as though she were listening.

Of course she had.

Several minutes passed.

The healer tightened Derren’s new wrap.

”Done.”

Derren groaned.

”You enjoy that.”

”I enjoy keeping blood inside you.”

”Could’ve fooled me.”

Milo called across the room.

”She talks to me the same way.”

The healer looked at him.

”You should drink more.”

Milo immediately drank.

Everyone noticed.

Sera laughed quietly.

Then the door at the far side of the chamber opened.

Three more people entered.

One was the young runner.

The other two wore the same iron emblem.

The older of the two looked toward the party.

Then toward the woman.

”Who are they?”

She answered.

”Guild search party.”

The man’s eyes shifted toward Kael.

”And the prince?”

”With them.”

His expression hardened.

Not dramatically.

Enough.

He looked toward Darius.

Then Galahad.

Then the wounded Derren.

”Why are they here?”

”Upper route collapsed behind them. East cut collapsed ahead.”

The older man swore.

”What about lower crossing?”

”Still open last check.”

He shook his head.

”Not for long.”

Galahad stood.

”You know that?”

The man looked at him.

”The heat channels changed this morning.”

Kael frowned.

”This morning?”

”Yes.”

”Before the hatchery alarm?”

The man looked toward the woman.

She answered.

”Yes.”

That mattered.

The instability had started before the immediate hatchery failure.

Kael’s System recorded it.

[Evidence Update]

Caldera thermal instability preceded current hatchery breach

Causal relationship: unresolved

Good.

Not a conclusion.

A timeline.

Galahad asked, ”What changed?”

The older man looked at him.

”Pressure. Heat. Some of the lower drakes started moving upward.”

Sera looked toward the route woman.

”That could explain why the juveniles were running.”

”Partly,” she said.

Galahad looked toward the armed strangers.

”You knew the lower drakes were moving and did not warn the eastern routes?”

The room cooled despite the heat.

The woman’s expression hardened.

”Careful.”

”I asked a question.”

”We do not control your roads.”

”No. But you knew something dangerous was moving toward them.”

The older man stepped forward.

”We did not know it would reach them.”

Galahad stared at him.

”That sentence has killed people before.”

Kael immediately thought of the Guild contracts.

Unreported hazards.

Secondary information.

The difference between suspicion and certainty.

The consequences of withholding either.

The older man looked irritated.

”You want us to report every possibility to every village east of here?”

”No.”

Galahad’s voice remained controlled.

”I want to know whether you had information that would have changed how people entered this forest.”

Silence.

That question struck deeper than accusation.

The woman crossed her arms.

”Who exactly are you to demand anything from us?”

Galahad answered.

”The man responsible for bringing my people home.”

Not prince.

Not commander.

Not House authority.

Guild mission leader.

The woman looked at him for a long moment.

Then:

”You really are Charney.”

Milo whispered to Kael.

”Apparently that means something.”

Kael whispered back.

”Apparently.”

Galahad heard neither.

”Answer.”

Before the woman could, another tremor moved through the chamber.

Stronger.

One of the lanterns swung hard enough to strike the wall.

A crate shifted.

Derren’s eyes opened.

The System flashed.

[ENVIRONMENTAL WARNING]

Subsurface pressure spike

Thermal movement accelerating below current depth

Immediate eruption: not confirmed

Local instability: increasing

Kael stood.

”We should move.”

Darius was already moving toward Derren.

Galahad looked toward the woman.

”Lower crossing.”

She nodded once.

”Fine.”

The older man beside her said, ”I’ll take them.”

She looked at him.

”Why?”

”Because if the lower passage changes, they won’t know where to step.”

He looked at Kael.

”And I would rather not have an Imperial prince disappear beneath our feet.”

Milo raised a finger.

”That is the nicest thing anyone here has said.”

The man gave him a flat look.

”It was not kindness.”

”Still counting it.”

Galahad made the final call.

”Everyone ready.”

The healer nodded.

Iris was already at the heavy door.

Sera had her bow back in hand.

Milo stood slower than the others but stood.

Darius took the rear of Derren’s litter himself.

The route worker at the front looked surprised.

Darius ignored him.

Kael looked toward the armed woman one last time.

The question about the copied marks remained unanswered.

So did the question of what this group knew about the western disappearances.

But Galahad did not force it.

Not with the ground moving.

They had gained something more valuable than an argument.

A route.

A timeline.

Evidence that the disturbances below had begun before the hatchery failure.

And confirmation that the people operating here knew more about the changing Caldera than they had shared with anyone east of it.

For now, that was enough.

The heavy door opened.

Heat rolled up from the stairway beyond.

The older armed man stepped through first.

”Stay exactly where I step.”

Milo looked down the descending stairs.

”Why?”

The man did not turn.

”Because part of the floor is hollow.”

Milo closed his eyes.

”Of course it is.”

They descended.

The door remained open behind them.

No one in the chamber had offered a name for their organization.

No one had explained the iron mark.

And Kael had stopped assuming answers simply because the shape looked familiar to someone else.

The mystery could wait.

The ground could not.
