The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

Teren Vos arrived at the Blackwood Adventurers’ Guild before Mira Doss.

That proved to be a mistake.

When Mira entered through the front doors shortly before the first morning bell, she found the young F-Rank adventurer sitting alone on a bench beside the Registry Counter with his iron badge in one hand and enough nervous energy to make his foot bounce against the floorboards.

She stopped in front of him.

”Why are you here?”

Teren blinked. ”Promotion review.”

”I know.”

”You said morning.”

”It is not morning registration yet.”

”The sun is up.”

Mira glanced toward one of the Guild Hall windows. Pale light had only just begun reaching through it.

”Barely.”

Teren looked at the badge in his hand.

”I didn’t want to be late.”

”You have succeeded.”

Mira walked behind the Registry Counter, unlocked the main ledger, and began preparing for the day as though Teren did not exist.

He watched her arrange ink, review yesterday’s unfinished records, check the invalid badge register, and place his promotion file on the corner of the counter.

After several minutes, he asked, ”Should I do something?”

”Wait.”

”I am.”

”Then continue succeeding.”

Teren sighed.

Nalia Greve arrived several minutes later carrying breakfast wrapped in cloth. She took one look at Teren, then at Mira.

”How long?”

”Since before me.”

Nalia looked impressed. ”That might be a Guild record.”

”It is not.”

”We should start one.”

”No.”

Teren stared at both women.

”Is everyone going to make fun of me today?”

Nalia set her breakfast beneath the Contract Counter. ”Probably.”

Galahad Charney entered from the rear corridor before Teren could decide whether leaving would be less humiliating than promotion. He carried two training reports beneath one arm and stopped when he noticed the young adventurer waiting.

”You’re early.”

”So I have been told.”

”Good.”

Teren looked relieved.

Then Galahad continued, ”You can help move the practice shields outside.”

The relief vanished.

By the time Kael heard about the promotion review, the Blackwood Adventurers’ Guild had already been open for nearly two hours.

He was standing at Stonebrook watching Master Rowan reject a load of timber.

The carpenter ran one weathered hand along the edge of a beam, pressed his thumb against a split near one end, and shook his head.

”No.”

The wagon driver frowned. ”It’s one split.”

”It is one split where I intend to put weight.”

”We can cut that end.”

”Then the beam is too short.”

The driver looked toward Kael as if expecting princely intervention.

Kael looked toward Rowan.

”Can it be used elsewhere?”

”Yes.”

”For the houses?”

”Not where they sent it.”

Kael turned toward the driver. ”Then Rowan decides.”

The man sighed but did not argue further.

That simple exchange would once have taken Kael several questions, a System window, and perhaps an unnecessary attempt to understand timber grading in the middle of a worksite. Now he understood something simpler.

Rowan knew timber.

Let Rowan know timber.

Stonebrook’s five-house expansion had resumed after the rain. Two foundations were complete enough for framing to begin, a third site had been prepared, and the remaining two waited for crews rather than materials. Kael had expected the project to move faster once the rain stopped, but Rowan had divided the workers carefully instead of throwing everyone onto the same construction.

”Why only three active sites?” Kael asked.

”Because I have enough experienced people to supervise three properly.”

”There are more laborers.”

”Yes.”

Kael waited.

Rowan looked at him.

”Oh.”

”Exactly.”

Unskilled hands could carry stone, prepare material, dig, and assist. They could not multiply experienced carpenters by standing nearby.

The Population & Labor Analysis appeared.

[Stonebrook Housing Expansion]

Approved permanent houses: 5

Foundations complete: 2

Foundation preparation: 1

Sites pending: 2

Primary current constraint: Skilled construction supervision

General labor availability: Adequate

Material availability: Adequate

Projected benefit from additional unskilled labor: Low

Kael smiled faintly.

The System was learning to tell him when more bodies would not solve the problem.

He looked toward Rowan. ”What would?”

”Time.”

Kael made a face.

Rowan continued, ”Or another carpenter experienced enough that I trust him not to build something I need to repair next year.”

”Anyone in the census?”

”One possible.”

Kael’s attention sharpened.

Rowan raised a finger. ”Possible.”

”Who?”

”A man in a western village. Worked house framing when he was younger. Farms now. Edwin’s people asked whether he would take seasonal work. He said he would consider two weeks after his current field work is finished.”

Kael nodded slowly.

Not permanent relocation.

Not forcing a farmer off his land.

Temporary skilled work when his agricultural obligations allowed it.

Exactly what the labor analysis had begun revealing.

”Pay?”

”Standard skilled rate if he proves he still deserves it.”

”Fair.”

Rowan glanced toward him.

”You are getting easier.”

”I am choosing to take that as praise.”

”It was not.”

Kael smiled.

A runner from the Guild found him before he left Stonebrook.

The young man bowed, handed Kael a folded message, and waited.

Kael opened it.

Teren Vos promotion review begins before midday. You are not required.

Beneath that, in different handwriting:

He will come anyway. — Nalia

Kael stared.

The runner looked carefully at the ground.

”Did Galahad write this?”

”The first line.”

”And Nalia?”

The runner’s expression betrayed him.

Kael folded the message.

”Tell them I have work.”

The runner nodded.

Kael waited.

Then sighed.

”Tell them I may arrive later.”

The runner smiled before catching himself.

Kael pointed toward the road.

”Go.”

He finished his Stonebrook visit first.

That mattered.

The Guild could conduct a promotion without its prince.

Stonebrook could also build houses without him, but understanding the labor constraint affected wider Blackwood planning. He spent another hour reviewing housing placement, food delivery patterns, and the temporary worker-lodging study before returning toward the manor settlement.

By then, Teren’s review had already begun.

The Blackwood Adventurers’ Guild was louder than it had been the previous afternoon. The Quest Board drew the usual morning traffic, while the Commons had become a meeting place for adventurers waiting for parties or contracts. Mira and Nalia worked behind the long oak counter beneath their now-familiar signs, and the Guild Infirmary corridor remained quiet.

Kael entered without announcement.

Galahad noticed him immediately.

”You lasted longer than I expected.”

”I went to Stonebrook.”

”Good.”

”Where is Teren?”

”Interview room.”

Kael glanced toward the corridor.

”Can I watch?”

Galahad considered.

”Yes.”

Kael raised an eyebrow.

”That easy?”

”You are observing. You are not deciding.”

”Agreed.”

”And you do not ask questions during the review.”

Kael frowned.

”Why?”

Galahad stared.

”Fine.”

The promotion review had three parts.

Kael learned that before entering.

First came Teren’s record.

Second, judgment.

Third, practical evaluation.

No one cared whether he could make a dramatic entrance with a sword.

Mira sat beside Galahad in the interview room with Teren’s Guild record open in front of her. Sera Venn occupied the third chair because several of Teren’s completed jobs involved fieldwork, and she had reviewed one of his earlier assessments.

Teren sat opposite them.

Kael remained near the wall.

Mira began.

”Five completed contracts.”

Teren nodded.

”One gathering.”

”Yes.”

”One delivery.”

”Yes.”

”One repair assignment.”

”Yes.”

”One animal-control contract.”

”Yes.”

”One supervised E-Rank tracking assignment.”

”Yes.”

”No failed contracts. No disciplinary action. No payment dispute involving your conduct.”

Teren sat slightly straighter.

Mira continued, ”One weather postponement on the repair assignment.”

Teren hesitated.

”That wasn’t my fault.”

”I did not say it was.”

He relaxed slightly.

”You delayed the roof work because the surface was wet.”

”Yes.”

”Client object?”

”At first.”

”What did you do?”

”Told her I would return when it dried.”

”Did you?”

”Yes.”

”Why not finish in the rain?”

Teren looked briefly confused by the question.

”Because falling off the roof would not repair it faster.”

Sera’s mouth moved slightly.

Almost a smile.

Mira continued. ”Tracking contract.”

Teren nodded.

”You were under Reysa Tal.”

”Yes.”

”She ordered withdrawal.”

”Yes.”

”Did you agree?”

Teren hesitated.

Kael recognized him now.

He had been the younger F-Rank who wanted to continue following the unknown predator.

”No.”

Galahad leaned forward slightly.

”Why?”

”I thought we could keep tracking.”

”Did you tell her that?”

”Yes.”

”Did you follow her withdrawal order?”

”Yes.”

”Why?”

”Because she was party leader.”

”Only because of that?”

Teren looked down.

”At first.”

Galahad waited.

Teren continued, ”Then we found the deer. I realized I didn’t know what we were following.”

”Do you think she made the right decision?”

”Yes.”

”What if the same thing happened tomorrow and you were party leader?”

”I’d withdraw.”

”Immediately?”

Teren thought.

”If the signs showed something beyond the contract and I couldn’t identify it safely.”

Better.

Not a memorized yes.

A condition.

Galahad looked toward Mira.

She made a note.

Sera asked the next question.

”You are escorting a farmer’s wagon on an E-Rank route. Something attacks a goat tied behind the wagon, takes it, and runs into the woods. The farmer orders you to chase.”

Teren answered faster.

”Protect the wagon.”

”And the goat?”

”If chasing means abandoning the people I was hired to escort, I don’t chase.”

”What if the farmer says the goat is worth more than the wagon?”

Teren frowned.

”Then he should have written that into the contract.”

Kael had to look away so he would not smile too obviously.

Galahad noticed anyway.

He said nothing.

The judgment questions continued.

An injured partner who wanted to proceed.

A client who concealed information.

An adventurer in the party who took something from a contract site that did not belong to them.

A village watch ordering the party to remain outside a restricted area.

Teren did not answer everything perfectly.

Twice, Galahad challenged him because he treated the client’s wishes as more authoritative than they actually were. Once, Sera corrected his assumption that a party leader automatically possessed authority over anyone who happened to be lower rank.

Teren listened.

That mattered more than getting every answer right on the first attempt.

Mira closed the file.

”Practical.”

They moved to the rear assessment yard.

A small crowd had gathered outside the marked boundary.

Kael looked toward Galahad.

”You allowed spectators?”

”Some.”

”Why?”

”Promotions will matter. I want people to understand what they involve.”

That made sense.

The Guild’s first internal promotion would teach everyone watching what rank meant more effectively than another notice beside the Quest Board.

Teren entered the yard carrying a practice sword and shield.

Sera stood opposite him.

The younger adventurers around the fence immediately became more interested.

Kael knew what several expected.

A duel.

It was not.

Sera began with movement.

Teren had to cross the yard while responding to marked threats from different directions. Then he protected a weighted sack representing an injured party member. Then he was given a route choice where the shortest path crossed an exposed section while the longer route offered cover.

He chose the longer path.

Sera made it worse.

Halfway through, she changed the scenario.

”Party member behind you is exhausted.”

Teren adjusted pace.

”Client says hurry.”

”I don’t leave the party.”

”Rain begins.”

He looked toward the ground.

”Route?”

”Becoming worse.”

”Continue?”

”How far from shelter?”

Sera pointed.

Teren chose shelter.

One spectator muttered, ”Too cautious.”

Galahad heard.

”So far, he has killed nobody.”

The spectator became quiet.

Only after the field decisions came direct combat.

Teren fought Sera with practice weapons.

He lost.

Quickly.

Not embarrassingly.

But clearly.

Sera controlled distance, forced him to overcommit once, struck his shoulder, then ended the exchange with the edge of her practice blade at his ribs.

Teren stepped back, breathing hard.

Several spectators looked confused.

One whispered, ”He failed.”

Sera heard that too.

”No.”

She looked toward Teren.

”What did you do wrong?”

”I chased your retreat.”

”Yes.”

”What else?”

”I stopped watching your off-hand.”

”Yes.”

Teren nodded.

Sera stepped away.

”Again.”

The second exchange lasted longer.

Teren still lost.

But he did not repeat the first mistake.

The final test placed him with two newer F-Rank adventurers and gave them a simple movement objective. Teren was not told to defeat Sera and Jessa.

He was told to get his group through.

One of the inexperienced adventurers panicked during the first simulated flank attack and moved in the wrong direction.

Teren grabbed the back of his padded vest.

”Stay with me.”

The man recovered.

Jessa pressed from the side.

Teren gave ground instead of trying to win.

They reached the line.

Messy.

Breathing hard.

Still together.

Galahad called the test.

The watching adventurers quieted.

Teren stood in the center of the yard, waiting.

Kael noticed the difference from the Imperial Knight Examination immediately.

There, candidates were judged for recognized Imperial knight standing through structured trials and formal standards appropriate to that institution.

Here, Teren was not being examined to become a knight.

He was being examined for permission to accept slightly more dangerous civilian contracts under the Guild’s name.

The standards should feel different.

They did.

Mira brought the record outside.

Galahad looked toward Sera.

”Recommendation?”

”E.”

”Concerns?”

”Combat remains ordinary.”

Teren’s face tightened.

Sera continued, ”That is not a rejection. His judgment is improving. He listens. He works inside limits. I would trust him on E-Rank work more than I trust several stronger applicants who entered this week.”

Teren looked surprised.

Galahad turned toward Mira.

”Record?”

”Clean enough. Five completed contracts. Appropriate field exposure. Client feedback positive. No evidence of dishonesty.”

Galahad looked toward Teren.

”Your current badge.”

Teren reached beneath his shirt and removed the dark iron F-Rank medallion.

For the first time, he looked genuinely nervous.

He handed it over.

Mira checked the registration number before placing it in a small box marked for surrendered badges.

Then she took another from a cloth pouch.

Same dark iron.

Same Guild mark.

Same registration number.

Different letter.

E.

Teren stared at it.

Galahad did not make him wait unnecessarily.

”Teren Vos. Your Guild standing is advanced from F-Rank to E-Rank. This authorizes you to accept E-Rank contracts within ordinary Guild restrictions and to lead lower-ranked members where a contract permits supervised participation.”

Teren nodded.

Galahad continued, ”It does not make you an officer. It does not give you authority over other adventurers outside a party or assigned operation. It does not mean you have outgrown F-Rank work. It means your record has shown enough responsibility for the Guild to trust you with more.”

Teren took the badge.

”Yes, Guild Master.”

”Do not make me regret it.”

A few people around the yard laughed.

Teren smiled.

Then the applause started.

Not ordered.

Not large.

But real.

Several F-Rank adventurers clapped. Reysa Tal, standing near the back, raised one hand in approval. Even Mira allowed the moment to continue before reminding Teren that he still needed to sign his promotion record.

Kael watched without stepping forward.

This belonged to the Guild.

The System appeared.

[Blackwood Adventurers’ Guild — First Internal Rank Advancement]

Adventurer: Teren Vos

Previous Rank: F

New Rank: E

Basis: Contract record + field conduct + disciplinary standing + practical review

Raw combat superiority: NOT required

Promotion authority: Guild

System recognition: Confirmed

Then another notice followed.

[Rank Advancement Framework Validation]

Initial F → E review successfully completed

Observed strengths:

Contextual contract review

Judgment assessment

Practical field evaluation

Record-based promotion

Observed risk: Evaluator availability may become limiting as membership grows

Kael smiled.

Galahad stepped beside him.

”You stayed quiet.”

”I was told to.”

”I am impressed.”

”Stop being surprised when I follow instructions.”

Galahad looked toward him.

Kael sighed.

”Fine.”

Teren’s first action as an E-Rank adventurer was not to take an E-Rank contract.

He went to the Commons and ordered lunch.

Kael liked that more than if he had immediately ripped the most dangerous notice off the Quest Board to prove something.

By midday, news of the promotion had spread through the entire Guild Hall.

So had several misunderstandings.

Nalia had to explain four times that completing five contracts did not automatically promote someone.

Mira had to explain twice that Teren’s F-Rank contracts still remained part of his record instead of disappearing after promotion.

One adventurer asked whether returning an E-Rank badge voluntarily would allow him to ”start over” if his disciplinary record became bad.

Mira stared at him for so long that he withdrew the question.

Galahad finally posted a copy of the promotion decision beside the rank rules, with identifying details limited to what mattered publicly.

FIRST GUILD ADVANCEMENT COMPLETED

Promotion based on service record, practical evaluation, judgment, and conduct.

Minimum eligibility does not guarantee advancement.

That stopped almost none of the questions.

Nalia looked toward Kael.

”This is your fault.”

”My fault?”

”You wanted people to understand the system.”

”That seems reasonable.”

”They want to understand it loudly.”

Galahad passed behind them.

”Welcome to institutions.”

Kael laughed.

He left the Guild after midday as promised.

The promotion had happened.

The Guild had handled it.

There was no reason for him to spend the rest of the day leaning over Mira’s records.

Blackwood had other work.

The Oakridge school became that work.

Master Rennick had spent the morning with the four possible instructors and sent his first written assessment to the manor.

He recommended two for regular training.

One could support arithmetic and account lessons.

Another could assist younger students but required more teaching practice.

None should run the entire school alone yet.

Rennick also provided an estimate of potential attendance based on household conversations.

The number changed by season.

That was exactly what Kael expected now.

During planting and harvest, fewer children could attend full days without creating conflict inside farming households. During slower periods, attendance could expand. Adult evening lessons appeared surprisingly popular among the families Rennick had spoken to, particularly younger farmers, apprentices, market workers, and several village-watch members.

Lily laid the report on the manor table.

”He wants to start with three teaching days each week.”

Kael looked toward her.

”For children?”

”Yes. Shorter sessions during heavy agricultural periods. Two evening literacy sessions for adults.”

”Why not every day?”

Lily raised one eyebrow.

Kael smiled.

”I know. Start manageable.”

Edwin nodded approvingly.

Kael hated that.

”What about books?”

”We found a bookseller in Aurelia willing to provide basic primers and arithmetic texts.”

”Price?”

Lily slid the figure across.

Kael’s eyebrows rose.

”Books are expensive.”

”Yes.”

”How many?”

”Rennick says fewer than you think.”

Kael looked suspicious.

”Why?”

”Shared instruction. Reusable writing boards. Students do not each require a personal copy immediately.”

That saved considerably more than Kael expected.

The Imperial technical books sent earlier were valuable because they were specialized and durable. A village school needed something different.

Simple primers.

Numbers.

Letters.

Reusable lesson boards.

Ink used carefully.

Copying sheets where necessary.

Kael opened the System.

[Oakridge Education Restoration]

School structure repair: 41%

Instructor model: Identified

Regular instructor candidates: 2

Support instructor candidates: 2

Adult instruction demand: Confirmed preliminary

Teaching material plan: Viable

Primary unresolved requirement: Operating budget + final household schedule

Kael looked toward Edwin.

”Budget.”

”Yes.”

”How expensive?”

”Not ruinous.”

”That sounds promising.”

”It also does not mean free.”

”Less promising.”

Edwin showed him.

Teacher compensation.

Assistant pay.

Building maintenance.

Heating during cold months.

Books and writing materials.

Cleaning.

Minor repairs.

It was not a giant expense compared with roads or military equipment.

It was permanent.

That mattered more.

A road repair could end.

A functioning school required coin every year.

Kael leaned back.

”If we open it, we need to be able to keep paying.”

”Yes.”

”No opening it for six months and closing when something more exciting appears.”

Rennick’s warning returned to him.

A school instead of a building called a school.

Kael looked toward the territory accounts.

”Can Blackwood sustain this one?”

Edwin nodded.

”One school, yes.”

”And eleven villages?”

”No.”

Kael smiled faintly.

There was the real answer.

Oakridge could become the first restored school.

Not the solution to Blackwood’s entire literacy problem.

If it worked, they could learn from it.

Teacher availability, attendance, seasonal schedules, materials, adult participation, cost per student, and whether families actually kept sending children after the novelty faded.

The System responded.

[Education Development Advisory]

Pilot-scale restoration recommended

Immediate territory-wide replication: NOT recommended

Measure:

Attendance

Literacy progress

Instructor retention

Household participation

Seasonal disruption

Operating cost

Adult enrollment

Kael smiled.

”Another pilot.”

Edwin nodded.

”You seem disappointed.”

”I understand why.”

”That is progress.”

Kael pointed toward him.

”Stop.”

Lily laughed.

They approved the operating budget provisionally for an initial term, subject to Rennick’s final schedule and instructor acceptance.

Oakridge would have a school again.

Soon.

Not tomorrow.

But soon.

The next report came from Bellhaven.

The wheelwright household had already completed its first paid repair.

One wagon wheel.

Nothing more.

Kael stared at the amount recorded beside it.

”Why did someone send this to me?”

Lily shrugged.

”Because everyone knows you are tracking the settlement pilot.”

Kael looked toward Edwin.

”Do I need to know every wheel?”

”No.”

”Good.”

The report still contained useful information.

The newcomer wheelwright had repaired one damaged wheel for a local farmer and inspected another wagon requiring more work. Edrin Pell continued basic farm-equipment repairs and did not appear threatened by the newcomer’s presence; instead, the two had apparently discussed which jobs each could handle.

That mattered more than the coin.

The new household was integrating into an existing village economy without House Kael inventing a guaranteed job for them.

The System updated.

[Settlement Pilot — Bellhaven Household]

Housing status: Stable preliminary

First independent local income: Confirmed

Skill demand: Confirmed at small scale

Conflict with existing local repair work: None observed

Retention review: Pending

Kael dismissed it.

Good.

He did not need a celebration for one wagon wheel either.

The manor-side household had also moved fully into its cottage.

The husband continued wagon work.

His wife continued clerical work.

Oakridge’s farming family had begun preparing their poultry enclosure.

Three households.

Three different lives.

Blackwood’s settlement program was beginning to feel less like a policy and more like people.

That was probably healthier.

Later in the afternoon, Kael found Grom overseeing village-watch training near the Black Dragon yard.

The rain had left the ground soft, so the session emphasized alarm procedures and evacuation rather than extended weapon drills.

Representatives from three villages stood around a rough map placed on a wooden table.

Grom pointed toward a marked cluster of houses.

”Fire here.”

One watch coordinator immediately said, ”Ring the alarm.”

”What alarm?”

The man stopped.

Grom waited.

”Our village bell.”

”Pattern?”

”Continuous.”

”Your livestock alarm?”

The man frowned.

”Three repeated strikes.”

”So if someone panics and rings continuously because cattle broke a fence?”

”People think fire.”

”Yes.”

The coordinator nodded slowly.

Kael stood far enough away not to interfere.

Grom continued.

”Your watch does not become useful because everyone owns a spear. It becomes useful because villagers know what your signals mean before something happens.”

He moved to another scenario.

Large beast sighted at the edge of a field.

The younger watch member immediately suggested pursuing it.

Grom stared at him.

”You have been listening to adventurers.”

A few people laughed.

”No pursuit. Alarm. Move children and livestock inward if time permits. Send a report. Observe from safety. If it approaches homes, defend people. Your task is not to win a story.”

Kael smiled faintly.

That lesson had apparently spread from the Guild too.

One watch coordinator asked, ”What if adventurers are already in the village?”

”Registered Guild party?”

”Yes.”

”Then they follow their contract and Guild restrictions. You do not command them unless lawful local authority permits it under the situation, and they do not command you merely because their badge rank is higher.”

Clear boundaries again.

Grom noticed Kael.

”You have something?”

”No.”

”Then stop smiling like that.”

Kael laughed.

The System appeared.

[Village Watch Coordination]

Training coverage: 7 / 11 villages represented in current rotation

Alarm procedure standardization: Improving

Emergency reporting: Improving

Weapon proficiency: Secondary

Primary watch function preserved: Civilian protection + delay + accurate reporting

Kael focused on seven.

Four villages still needed their coordinators fully integrated into the training rotation.

No rush.

But continued progress.

”Need more Black Dragons?” Kael asked.

Grom shook his head.

”Not yet.”

”Damien leaving hurt the schedule?”

”Some.”

Kael’s expression shifted.

Grom continued before he could ask.

”We adjusted.”

Simple.

Damien mattered.

The Black Dragon still functioned.

Both could be true.

Kael nodded.

The System did not display Damien’s location.

Kael did not ask it to.

He had received the junction transfer report. The next meaningful communication would come when Damien reached the frontier or when ordinary courier routes allowed a letter to return.

That was enough.

He was getting better at saying that.

Near sunset, the Blackwood Adventurers’ Guild sent its daily summary to the manor.

Kael did not go retrieve it personally.

That was also progress.

Lily placed it beside dinner.

Fifty-seven registered adventurers.

Thirty-six confirmed ranks.

Twenty-one F-Rank.

Fourteen E-Rank.

One D-Rank.

Teren’s promotion accounted for the shift.

Thirteen active contracts.

Eighteen completed total.

No serious injuries.

One weather-delayed contract still outstanding.

No military transfers.

No House intervention required.

Kael read the final note from Galahad.

Promotion review attracted more questions than opening-day procedures. Mira requests authority to threaten people with literacy lessons. Request denied.

Kael laughed.

Lily looked toward him.

”What?”

He handed her the report.

She read it.

”I think Mira would use the authority.”

”Definitely.”

The System appeared.

[Blackwood Adventurers’ Guild — Day 10 Summary]

Registered Adventurers: 57

Confirmed Rank Placements:

F-Rank: 21

E-Rank: 14

D-Rank: 1

C-Rank and Above: 0

Active Contracts: 13

Completed Contracts: 18

Properly Withdrawn: 1

Internal Promotions: 1

Serious Incidents: 0

Guild Relief Reserve: Active

Operational Status: Stable

House Intervention Required: NO

Then the House overview followed.

[House Development Overview]

Controlled Settlement Pilot: 3 / 10 households placed

Bellhaven household: Independent income recorded

Oakridge household: Integration underway

Manor household: Permanent housing established

Stonebrook Housing Expansion: 2 frames beginning / 3 sites progressing

Oakridge School Restoration: Program planning active

Village Watch Coordination: Expanding

Blackwood Adventurers’ Guild: Day 10 complete

Kael looked at the numbers.

Ten days.

The Guild had been open long enough that the excitement of the first morning had already begun fading.

That was what he wanted.

People were learning what rank meant.

Clients were learning what the Guild would and would not do.

Adventurers were discovering that five completed contracts gave them a chance at promotion, not a promise. A man had risen from F to E without defeating a legendary beast or winning a tournament. He had climbed because he completed work, listened when someone more experienced told him to retreat, learned from mistakes, and proved that greater responsibility would not immediately become greater stupidity.

Outside the Guild, Blackwood was learning the same lesson at a different scale.

A village did not improve because Kael built the largest thing possible.

A household did not become settled because its name entered a ledger.

A school did not exist because someone repaired its roof.

A road was not good because it survived one dry day.

Progress had requirements.

So did promotion.

Kael leaned back and dismissed the System.

Tomorrow, the Guild would open again.

Teren Vos would walk through the same doors wearing an E instead of an F.

Most people outside Blackwood would not care.

Inside the Guild, that small iron letter meant something very specific.

Blackwood had trusted him with a little more danger.

Now he had to prove that trust had been placed well.
