The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

The road west carried them away from Solmara beneath a clear morning sky.

By the third day, Orinth had become little more than a memory of bells, stone corridors, archive shelves, ceremonial coats, and paperwork that somehow managed to make the granting of knighthood feel both ancient and relentlessly administrative.

Kael found himself appreciating that more with distance.

Elias and Marcus had expected the return journey to feel different.

At least, Kael suspected they had.

Instead, the horses still needed feeding. Rain still turned bad sections of road into mud. Inns still charged too much for rooms near major crossings, according to Elias, and Darius still expected everyone awake and ready to travel at the hour he had chosen regardless of whether two members of the party had recently acquired knightly titles.

By the fourth morning, Elias had stopped reacting every time someone called him Sir.

Mostly.

A merchant at a roadside stop approached while Kael’s group prepared to leave.

”Sir Elias?”

Elias turned.

”Yes?”

The response came naturally enough that Kael looked over.

Elias noticed.

”Don’t.”

Kael smiled.

”I said nothing.”

”You were proud of me for answering my own name.”

”I was.”

Marcus mounted nearby.

”He has improved.”

Elias looked toward him.

”You were worse yesterday.”

”I was not.”

”You looked behind yourself when that innkeeper said Sir Marcus.”

Marcus paused.

Kael’s smile widened.

Darius mounted.

”If both of you are finished discovering that names remain attached to you after acquiring titles, we are leaving.”

Elias sighed.

”There is something reassuring about him not caring.”

”He cares,” Kael said.

Darius looked toward him.

Kael mounted immediately.

”Leaving.”

They resumed the journey.

The closer they came to the Imperial Province of Aurelia, the more familiar the roads became. Traffic increased around major junctions before thinning again as they turned west toward Blackwood. Kael watched the landscape change with an attention he had not possessed when he first inherited the territory.

He noticed roads differently now.

Drainage.

Bridge approaches.

Distances between settlements.

Places where wagons naturally stopped.

Fields beside routes that could support expansion.

Inns built near intersections rather than simply beside villages.

Even the worst stretches interested him because he had begun understanding why they were bad instead of merely recognizing discomfort when his horse crossed them.

Jessa rode beside him for part of the afternoon.

”You are staring at the ditch.”

Kael looked toward her.

”I am observing drainage.”

”You have become very exciting.”

”I was a prince before.”

”You were more exciting then.”

Kael frowned.

Jessa smiled and rode ahead.

Merric passed several moments later.

”She’s right.”

”Why is everyone becoming comfortable saying these things?”

”Leadership.”

”That is not what leadership means.”

Merric shrugged.

Kael decided Blackwood had corrupted them.

Late that afternoon, they reached the first village firmly inside Blackwood territory.

Kael recognized it immediately.

Not because it had changed dramatically.

Because he knew what he was looking for now.

The road near the village had been cleared along one edge. A drainage channel that had previously collapsed was open again. Two wagons waited beside a newly widened stopping area while several farmers loaded sacks beneath a rough wooden shelter that had not existed before Kael left for Solmara.

A Black Dragon patrol stood near the village entrance.

The three soldiers recognized Kael’s party and straightened.

”My lord.”

Kael slowed his horse.

”Anything to report?”

The patrol leader shook his head.

”Nothing urgent. Two beast sightings farther north this week, both unconfirmed. Road traffic has been steady.”

Kael nodded.

”And Blackwood Manor?”

”No emergency messages.”

Good.

The soldier’s eyes moved toward Elias.

Then Marcus.

Recognition appeared.

His expression changed.

”Wait.”

Elias looked suspicious.

The soldier smiled.

”You did it?”

Marcus nodded.

”Yes.”

The other two Black Dragons immediately looked toward them.

”Both?”

”Yes,” Elias said.

The patrol leader grinned.

”Sir Elias Thorn.”

Elias closed his eyes briefly.

Kael laughed.

The soldier continued.

”Sir Marcus Wintermere.”

Marcus handled it with considerably more dignity.

”Thank you.”

The third Black Dragon looked toward Kael.

”When did it become official?”

”After the consecration was completed and certified,” Kael answered.

The patrol leader nodded slowly.

”So the Church part matters.”

”Yes.”

He looked thoughtful.

”Damien will want to hear everything.”

That reminded Kael immediately.

Damien Ravenmoor.

He had passed the same Imperial Knight Examination.

But his road had divided from Elias and Marcus before Orinth.

A six-month frontier evaluation still waited for him.

No Church consecration yet.

No certification.

No Sir Damien Ravenmoor.

Not until he returned and completed the final recognition process.

Kael looked toward Darius.

”Has Damien’s departure order arrived?”

The patrol soldiers looked confused.

Darius answered.

”We’ll know when we reach the manor.”

Kael nodded.

They continued.

The sun was beginning to lower when Blackwood Manor finally appeared in the distance.

Kael had expected relief.

Instead, he felt something closer to curiosity.

Every time he left Blackwood now, it changed without him.

That had frightened him once.

Now he considered it one of the best signs that his territory might actually be growing.

The northern road became busier as they approached.

A Stonebrook wagon passed carrying cut stone toward one of the construction sites. Behind it came a smaller cart loaded with vegetables and baskets. Two merchants traveled east with goods Kael did not recognize, and a family walking beside a mule moved aside when the Black Dragon escort approached.

One of the children pointed.

”Knights!”

Elias looked straight ahead.

Kael bit the inside of his cheek.

Marcus glanced toward him.

”Don’t.”

”I am doing nothing.”

”You are visibly doing nothing.”

Darius sighed.

The gates of Blackwood Manor came into view.

Then someone shouted from the wall.

”The prince!”

Movement spread through the courtyard.

Kael smiled faintly.

Not because he needed an announcement.

Because home had become the first word that came to mind.

They rode through the gates.

The courtyard looked exactly like Blackwood and nothing like the place Kael had first inherited.

Workers crossed between storage areas carrying timber and tools. A wagon waited near Garrick’s forge for repairs. Several Black Dragons were finishing afternoon drills on the far side of the grounds. Servants moved between the manor and temporary market carrying ledgers, baskets, and messages.

Near the entrance stood Edwin Ashcombe.

Lily beside him.

Bram a few steps farther back.

Master Rowan had apparently come directly from construction because sawdust covered one shoulder.

Garrick Ironhand still wore his forge apron.

And standing with them, arms folded across his chest, was Damien Ravenmoor.

Kael noticed him immediately.

Damien’s dark hair had grown slightly longer since the examination journey. His spear rested against the wall nearby, and he wore ordinary Black Dragon field clothing rather than anything ceremonial.

His eyes went first to Kael.

Then Darius.

Then Elias.

Then Marcus.

He saw the knightly insignia.

Damien smiled.

”Well.”

Elias dismounted.

Damien pushed away from the wall.

”Sir Elias Thorn.”

Elias stared.

”Not you too.”

Damien laughed and clasped his forearm.

”You expect me to miss this?”

”Yes.”

”Absolutely not.”

Then Damien turned toward Marcus.

”Sir Marcus Wintermere.”

Marcus accepted the clasp with a smile.

”Thank you.”

Damien looked between them.

”So?”

Elias frowned.

”So what?”

”What does it feel like?”

Elias considered.

”Mostly like people have discovered a new way to annoy me.”

Damien laughed.

”That bad?”

”The title isn’t bad.”

”He likes it,” Kael said as he dismounted.

Elias pointed toward him.

”I did not say that.”

”You touch the insignia every few hours.”

”That is because I am not used to wearing it.”

”Exactly.”

Damien looked toward Marcus.

Marcus shook his head.

”Do not involve me.”

Lily hurried forward before the argument could grow.

”My lord.”

Kael smiled.

”You survived.”

”Barely.”

Edwin inclined his head.

”Welcome home.”

Kael looked around the courtyard.

”Anything on fire?”

”No.”

”Anyone missing?”

”Not currently.”

”Did Milo create a problem?”

Lily hesitated.

Kael sighed.

”What did he do?”

”Nothing serious.”

”That is not an answer.”

”We can discuss it after you eat.”

Kael stared at her.

”That means it is annoying rather than dangerous.”

”Correct.”

Progress.

Darius dismounted beside him.

”Reports first.”

Lily looked toward him.

”Food first.”

Darius paused.

Kael looked between them.

This was interesting.

Edwin spoke.

”Both.”

Of course.

Kael turned back toward Damien.

”When did you receive word about the frontier?”

Damien’s expression changed slightly.

”There it is.”

”What?”

”I wondered how long before you asked.”

Kael frowned.

”You’re leaving soon.”

”I know.”

”Exact date?”

Damien nodded.

”Order arrived two days ago.”

The courtyard around Kael seemed to become quieter despite the continued movement.

”When?”

”Eighteen days.”

Kael did the calculation automatically.

Less than three weeks.

The six-month frontier evaluation they had discussed for so long was no longer an abstract future assignment.

It had a date.

Damien noticed Kael’s expression.

”You knew it was coming.”

”I did.”

”You look surprised.”

”I’m not surprised.”

”Then what?”

Kael looked toward Elias and Marcus.

Two had returned with titles.

Victor remained away at Greywatch, completing the frontier assignment he had chosen instead of moving directly into consecration.

Now Damien was preparing to leave for his own.

”Timing.”

Damien understood.

He glanced toward the knightly insignia on Elias’s coat.

”The Church can wait.”

Kael looked at him.

”You’re sure?”

Damien laughed once.

”I passed the examination.”

”Yes.”

”I know what comes after the frontier.”

”Consecration.”

”And if I come back having learned nothing, six months would have been wasted.”

Kael studied him.

”No regret?”

Damien’s expression became more serious.

”Ask me after I’ve been there a month.”

Fair.

Elias looked toward him.

”You know the ceremony isn’t simple.”

”I assumed.”

”They verify everything.”

”I passed the examination. I can survive clerks.”

Marcus looked toward Kael.

”Should we tell him about the archive?”

Damien raised an eyebrow.

”What archive?”

Kael smiled.

”We have time.”

Damien immediately looked concerned.

”Why did you say that like a threat?”

Lily stepped between them.

”Inside.”

Kael sighed.

”Apparently we are being managed.”

”You were gone for days,” Lily said. ”I have earned it.”

They entered the manor.

The evening meal became larger than Kael expected.

News traveled through Blackwood Manor faster than any formal announcement could have managed.

By the time Kael reached the dining hall, several members of the original fifty Black Dragons had somehow found reasons to be nearby.

Milo Renwick arrived claiming he had been instructed to deliver a report.

He had no report.

Sera Venn appeared with Jessa and said nothing at all, which was at least honest.

Tavin Holt came directly from training.

Perrin Vale had returned from a road patrol less than an hour earlier.

Nessa Arlow remained outside Blackwood on assignment and would not return until the following day.

Dalen Mott sat quietly near the end of the table as if he had always been invited.

Hugo Stone arrived with Garrick.

Iris Hollow appeared so silently that Kael did not notice her until she was already eating.

Leon Ashford, Victor absent at Greywatch, Damien preparing for the frontier, Elias and Marcus newly consecrated—

For a moment Kael saw the Black Dragon differently.

Not fifty names.

Not a professional military number.

People moving onto different roads.

Some would remain soldiers their entire lives.

Some might become knights.

Some would become instructors, officers, specialists, administrators, or something no one had considered yet.

The institution could remain one organization while the people inside it grew in different directions.

That mattered.

Milo looked toward Elias.

”So technically I have to call you Sir now?”

”No.”

”Excellent.”

Elias frowned.

”I mean—you can.”

”I heard the first answer.”

Sera took a drink.

”You have never called Darius Sir unless someone was already angry with you.”

”That is respect.”

Darius sat farther down the table.

”No, it isn’t.”

Milo immediately became interested in his meal.

Kael laughed.

Damien looked toward Marcus.

”What was the oath?”

Marcus’s expression shifted.

Not secretive.

Serious.

He summarized the core obligations.

Bear arms under Imperial law.

Defend the Empire and its people when lawful duty required it.

Obey lawful command.

Refuse directly unlawful orders.

Protect those under their authority.

Do not use title or force for unlawful seizure, coercion, or abuse.

Submit serious misconduct to review.

Damien listened without interrupting.

”So they make you say the unlawful-order part publicly.”

”Yes,” Marcus said.

”In front of everyone?”

”Yes.”

Damien nodded slowly.

”Good.”

Kael looked toward him.

”You expected otherwise?”

”No.”

Damien leaned back.

”But saying something privately during an examination is different from putting your name beneath it in front of hundreds.”

Elias nodded.

”It is.”

For once, he did not make a joke.

Damien noticed.

The three men fell quiet.

Kael understood what passed between them.

All three had passed the same Imperial examination.

But their paths after it were different.

Elias and Marcus had gone to Solmara.

Victor had chosen Greywatch.

Damien had chosen the frontier evaluation.

None of those choices erased the others.

The examination had opened a door.

They had not all walked through it the same way.

Lily sat near Kael with a stack of papers beside her plate.

Kael looked at them.

”No.”

She raised an eyebrow.

”We agreed reports.”

”After food.”

”You are nearly finished.”

”I can eat slower.”

Edwin looked toward Kael’s plate.

”You have been eating slower for twenty minutes.”

Betrayal from every direction.

Kael sighed.

”Fine.”

Lily handed him the first document.

”Road work continued according to the existing budget.”

Kael read.

”Good.”

”Three more merchant caravans stopped at the temporary market while you were away.”

Kael looked up.

”Three?”

”Orrin is pleased.”

”I imagine.”

”Rowan is not.”

Kael looked toward the carpenter.

Rowan grunted.

”Wagons are using space I wanted for materials.”

”So the market needs better separation.”

”Yes.”

Kael made a note.

Lily passed the next report.

”Stonebrook quarry production increased again.”

”How much?”

”Enough that Edwin wants a proper comparison before anyone celebrates.”

Kael looked toward Edwin.

The steward nodded.

”Output has increased. So have labor costs, wagon use, tool wear, and food demand.”

Kael smiled.

”Evidence.”

”Exactly.”

The charter from Augustus came immediately to mind.

Measure what worked.

Not simply what looked successful.

Another document.

”Two villages requested road extensions.”

”Not approved yet.”

”No.”

”Good.”

Lily raised an eyebrow.

Kael looked offended.

”I can learn restraint.”

Milo coughed.

Kael ignored him.

”Western road?”

Lily’s expression changed.

”Quiet.”

That word did not reassure him.

”The prisoners?”

”Still secured. Darius’s assigned officers continued questioning them.”

Kael looked toward Darius.

”Anything?”

”Some.”

Darius did not elaborate at the dinner table.

Kael nodded.

Later.

”Northern beast reports?”

”More.”

That drew several Black Dragons’ attention.

”How many?” Kael asked.

Lily checked her notes.

”Eleven reports since you left. Four likely duplicates. Three confirmed by hunters. The rest uncertain.”

Iris looked toward her.

”What type?”

”Mostly small beasts near livestock routes. One larger sighting near the western tree line, unconfirmed.”

Kael looked toward Darius.

”Pattern?”

”Not enough yet.”

Again.

Not enough information.

Kael nodded.

”Keep recording.”

Damien looked between them.

”What changed while we were gone for the examination?”

Kael smiled faintly.

”Blackwood learned how to make problems faster.”

Garrick laughed.

”Growth.”

”Apparently.”

The meal continued.

Eventually the formal reports gave way to stories from Orinth.

Milo was deeply disappointed by the absence of a magical central knight book.

”That would have been better.”

”No,” Kael said.

”Visually.”

”That is not how institutions should be designed.”

”Sometimes you lack imagination.”

Kael stared at him.

Milo reconsidered.

”The archive sounds excellent.”

Sera looked toward Elias.

”Four hundred people?”

”Closer to five.”

”You looked nervous?”

”No.”

Marcus answered.

”Yes.”

Elias looked toward him.

”This title has changed you.”

”Toward honesty.”

”That sounds like Church propaganda.”

Even Darius smiled.

By the time the meal ended, the atmosphere around Elias and Marcus had changed.

The titles were still new.

Still objects of jokes and curiosity.

But they were no longer cathedral titles.

They had entered Blackwood.

Tomorrow those titles would exist on training fields, road patrols, reports, and command rosters.

That was where they would become real.

Kael did not return immediately to his chamber.

Instead, Darius led him toward the Black Dragon command room.

Damien came with them.

So did Elias and Marcus.

Lily followed carrying the House copies of their Church certification.

Edwin joined last.

Kael looked around the table.

”This feels serious.”

Darius placed a blank command sheet before him.

”It is.”

Kael immediately understood.

The System’s recommendation from the inn.

Define the relationship between Imperial knightly standing and Black Dragon internal command.

Darius looked toward Elias.

”You are now Sir Elias Thorn.”

Then Marcus.

”You are now Sir Marcus Wintermere.”

Both nodded.

”That grants legal and social standing recognized beyond House Kael.”

”Yes,” Marcus said.

”It does not automatically alter your Black Dragon command rank.”

Elias nodded.

”We discussed that.”

”Now we write it.”

Kael looked toward Darius.

”You already decided?”

”I have recommendations.”

Of course he did.

Darius continued.

”A knight serving inside the Black Dragon follows the Black Dragon chain of command while acting under Black Dragon orders.”

Kael nodded.

”So a non-knighted officer can command a knight.”

”Yes.”

Damien leaned forward.

”That will bother some nobles.”

”It may,” Darius said.

”Doesn’t make it wrong.”

”No.”

Marcus looked toward the document.

”What happens if the command is unlawful?”

”Then your knightly oath changes nothing about the answer.”

Marcus nodded.

”You refuse it.”

”Yes.”

”And report depending on severity.”

”Yes.”

Elias asked, ”What if we’re not acting as Black Dragons?”

Darius looked toward him.

”Then authority depends upon the assignment.”

That was where things became complicated.

Darius continued.

”If House Kael sends Sir Elias as a formal knightly representative to another territory, he may possess authority different from what he has standing in a Black Dragon formation.”

Kael nodded.

”Role before title?”

”Authority before assumptions.”

Better wording.

Lily began writing.

Darius looked toward Kael.

”Knightly status should be recorded separately from military rank.”

Kael smiled.

”Redundancy.”

Darius stared.

Kael stopped smiling.

”Separate categories.”

”Yes.”

Edwin spoke.

”And House records should distinguish current sworn service, military command role, knightly standing, and any external commission.”

Kael looked toward him.

”That sounds like the archive.”

”It sounds like accurate administration.”

Kael nodded.

Damien tapped the table.

”What about me?”

Everyone looked toward him.

He continued.

”I passed the Imperial Knight Examination.”

”Yes,” Kael said.

”But I am not a knight.”

”Not formally.”

”No consecration.”

”No certification.”

Damien nodded.

”So the record should say exactly that.”

Lily wrote.

Imperial Knight Examination: Passed.

Church Consecration: Pending.

Formal Knightly Standing: Not yet conferred.

Damien looked at it.

”Good.”

Kael thought of Victor.

”Add Victor.”

Lily looked toward him.

Kael continued.

”Same distinction.”

Victor Ravenshade had passed the Imperial Knight Examination before leaving for Greywatch.

But he had chosen the frontier assignment rather than moving directly to consecration.

No Sir Victor Ravenshade yet.

Not until he returned and completed the Church process.

Lily wrote a second entry.

Victor Ravenshade — Imperial Knight Examination: Passed. Consecration pending following frontier assignment.

Then Damien.

Damien Ravenmoor — Imperial Knight Examination: Passed. Consecration pending following frontier evaluation.

Kael stared at the two lines.

Different men.

Different assignments.

Same unfinished final step.

Elias looked toward Damien.

”So when you come back, we take you to Church.”

Damien frowned.

”You make it sound like punishment.”

”It felt like punishment occasionally.”

Marcus shook his head.

”It did not.”

”You did not have to explain your father’s barrels.”

Damien looked confused.

Kael smiled.

”Long story.”

Darius returned everyone to the actual problem.

”Until Damien is consecrated, he is not addressed as Sir by legal right.”

Damien nodded.

”I know.”

”Same for Victor.”

”Yes.”

Kael looked toward Lily.

”Make sure the House records stop using Sir Victor anywhere before his consecration.”

She frowned.

”Did they?”

”Some older drafts might.”

”I’ll check.”

Good.

Continuity inside the story now had an administrative reason too.

Kael looked at Darius.

”What about Elias and Marcus tomorrow?”

”Training.”

Elias sighed.

Darius continued.

”Same places unless I decide otherwise.”

”Patrol?”

”Possibly.”

”Ceremonial duties?”

”No.”

Elias relaxed.

”Excellent.”

Kael looked toward him.

”You spent several days becoming a knight and immediately want no ceremonial duties.”

”I became a knight to be useful.”

Darius nodded once.

”That is the correct answer.”

Elias blinked.

Then smiled.

Marcus noticed.

”Careful. Praise.”

”Rare.”

Darius ignored them.

Kael looked around the table.

This was what the archive had taught him.

Categories mattered.

Elias Thorn was a knight.

He was also a Black Dragon.

A former farmer.

A pattern observer.

A man who complained when formal collars sat too high.

None of those erased the others.

Marcus Wintermere was a knight.

An engineer-minded soldier.

An Aura user.

A man who once abandoned a position for eleven minutes because circumstances demanded judgment instead of obedience.

Damien had passed an examination.

He had not yet completed consecration.

Victor had done the same.

The record should show precisely where each stood instead of collapsing everything into one convenient label.

Lily finished writing.

”Anything else?”

Kael looked toward Darius.

The commander nodded.

”For now.”

Kael leaned back.

”That was surprisingly painless.”

Edwin looked toward him.

”We have not discussed the development charter.”

Kael closed his eyes.

Of course.

Lily smiled.

”Welcome home.”

Much later, Kael finally reached his chamber.

He had missed it.

That was strange.

The room was not particularly beautiful compared with Orinth’s guest house or the Imperial Palace.

But the desk was his.

The window overlooked Blackwood.

The shelves contained the things he had chosen to keep.

And the stack of reports waiting beside his chair was unmistakably home.

Kael placed Augustus’s sealed development charter on the desk.

Beside it, Lily had left copies of the new Black Dragon knightly-standing rules.

Then he noticed another envelope.

Gray paper.

Blackwood seal.

Not Imperial.

Not Church.

He opened it.

The message was short.

To Lord Kael Asterion.

Greywatch administrative rotation report received through Third Legion channels. Victor Ravenshade remains in good standing. Current evaluation continues as scheduled. No request for early return has been submitted.

Kael read the line twice.

Victor.

Still at Greywatch.

Still working.

Still choosing the difficult road he had accepted.

No dramatic crisis.

No secret emergency.

Just confirmation that he remained there doing the work.

Kael smiled faintly.

Another person moving beyond Blackwood without leaving it behind.

He placed the letter beside Damien’s departure order, which Lily had copied for him.

Victor already gone.

Damien leaving in eighteen days.

Elias and Marcus newly returned as knights.

Blackwood itself growing fast enough that Kael could no longer pretend everyone important would always be standing within the same walls.

That was probably what building something meant.

People came.

People left.

People returned differently.

Institutions remained.

Kael looked toward the window.

Torches moved along the evening road.

The forge had finally gone quiet.

Somewhere near the temporary market, someone laughed.

Black Dragon guards changed watch.

Tomorrow Sir Elias Thorn and Sir Marcus Wintermere would return to training.

Damien Ravenmoor would continue preparing for six months away.

Victor Ravenshade would wake at Greywatch and perform whatever work the Third Legion had assigned him.

And Kael would begin dealing with the stack of problems Blackwood had politely saved for his return.

The System appeared.

[House Records Synchronization Available.]

Kael accepted.

The interface shifted.

[Recognized Knightly Standing Updated.]

Sir Elias Thorn — Certified.

Sir Marcus Wintermere — Certified.

Damien Ravenmoor — Imperial Knight Examination Passed / Consecration Pending.

Victor Ravenshade — Imperial Knight Examination Passed / Consecration Pending.

Kael stared.

Good.

The System had not promoted anyone simply because it knew they had passed an examination.

It had followed the institution Blackwood itself was required to follow.

Another line appeared.

[Black Dragon Command Structure: Knightly Standing Classification Added.]

Note: Knightly status does not supersede assigned operational command without lawful authority to do so.

Kael smiled.

”Useful.”

The screen continued.

[House Management Interface requires additional updates following Imperial Development Charter registration.]

Then:

[New administrative categories available upon review.]

Kael stared at the final message.

He could already feel another night disappearing.

Then Malrec’s voice returned from memory.

Do not confuse development with speed.

Kael dismissed the System.

”Tomorrow.”

For once, he meant it.

He placed the reports in a neat stack, blew out the candle beside his desk, and walked toward the bed.

Blackwood had survived several days without him.

Elias and Marcus had become knights without becoming different men.

Victor was learning at Greywatch.

Damien was preparing to leave.

And Kael was slowly learning that leadership did not mean keeping everyone close enough to reach.

Sometimes it meant building something strong enough that people could leave, grow, return, and still know where they belonged.
