The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

The northwest contracts covered almost half of Galahad’s office floor by midnight.

Three weeks of Adventure Guild operations did not sound like much until every completed request, failed assignment, delayed return, client complaint, route note, and clerk annotation had been pulled from storage and arranged by date.

Kael sat on the floor with his back against the wall.

Galahad occupied the desk.

Teren Vos had claimed one corner.

Derrick Sorn sat near the door with Rellan Dorr’s recovered pack beside him.

Nobody had suggested putting it away.

The false Guild marker rested on the desk beside the unfamiliar white route stake Iris had brought back from the forest.

Two pieces of wood.

One copied the Guild.

One belonged to someone else.

Together, they had led three adventurers somewhere west.

Teren tapped the contract he had found earlier.

”Eleven days ago.”

Galahad looked up.

”We established that.”

”I know. I’m reading the entire report again.”

”Anything new?”

”Not yet.”

Derrick leaned against the wall.

”Then why are you reading it again?”

Teren looked toward him.

”Because sometimes the thing you miss is located between the things you already noticed.”

Derrick stared.

”That sounded suspiciously intelligent.”

”I have moments.”

Kael held out his hand.

”Give me the contract.”

Teren passed it over.

The assignment itself was ordinary.

An E-rank gathering party had been sent northwest to collect resin from a species of old pine growing near the lower ridge. The party completed the work, returned before dark, and received payment.

The clerk had added a note after the debrief.

Party reported hearing repeated cries from farther west. Investigation not pursued because sound originated outside assigned route.

Kael read it again.

”Repeated.”

Galahad nodded.

”Not one cry.”

”Could have been an animal.”

”Yes.”

”Could have been a person.”

”Yes.”

Derrick looked toward Rellan’s pack.

”Could have been whatever pulled Rellan off the road.”

Galahad’s eyes shifted toward him.

”Possibly.”

Derrick exhaled sharply.

”You really hate conclusions.”

”I hate conclusions reached before evidence.”

”You sound like Kael.”

Galahad looked offended.

Kael smiled.

”Terrible insult.”

Teren had already returned to the records.

”Here.”

Everyone looked toward him.

He pulled another completed contract from the pile.

”Seven days before that one.”

Galahad held out his hand.

Teren passed it over.

An F-rank delivery mission.

A small parcel had been carried from Blackwood to one of the charcoal work camps northwest of the Guild.

Completed.

No injury.

No failure.

Nothing unusual in the official result.

Then Teren pointed toward the debrief notes.

Pack animal became agitated near western tree line. Party reported strong reluctance to leave road. Cause unknown.

Kael looked toward Galahad.

”The original D-rank investigation mentioned animals behaving strangely.”

”Yes.”

”Same area?”

Galahad reached for the route map.

”Close.”

He marked the location.

The first report sat east of the west-trail junction.

The cries had been heard farther west.

Rellan had later been sent to investigate unusual animal behavior along the same general northwest corridor.

Kael frowned.

”So whatever happened didn’t begin three days ago.”

”No.”

Galahad looked toward the spread of contracts.

”The question is how far back it goes.”

That gave the room a new purpose.

Until now, they had been looking for anything strange.

Now they knew what kinds of details mattered.

Animal behavior.

Unusual sounds.

Route changes.

Missing cargo.

Delayed returns.

Unexplained injuries.

Tracks.

The four of them divided the records again.

This time, the work moved faster.

Kael read every northwest assignment from the Guild’s first week.

Most were useless to the investigation.

Herb gathering.

Firewood requests.

A missing goat.

Two merchant escorts.

One poorly written complaint about ”something large” near a field that turned out to be a farmer’s escaped draft animal.

Those went aside.

No need to transform every odd sentence into part of the mystery.

Then Derrick stopped.

”Wait.”

Galahad looked toward him.

”What?”

Derrick read silently for several seconds.

”Failed hunting request.”

”Date?”

”Sixteen days ago.”

”Rank?”

”E.”

Derrick handed it over.

Two adventurers had been contracted to kill several aggressive boars near a woodland farm.

They found the animals.

They did not kill them.

Instead, the party abandoned the assignment after discovering three boar carcasses.

Galahad read the debrief.

His expression changed.

Kael stood.

”What?”

Galahad passed him the report.

Three adult boars discovered dead approximately half mile west of assigned hunting area. Severe tearing injuries. No evidence of butchering. Party withdrew and reported possible larger predator.

Kael looked toward Teren.

”Was anything done with this?”

Teren frowned.

”I remember the report.”

”You were here?”

”Yes.”

”What happened?”

”Galahad checked whether any other predator complaints existed.”

Galahad nodded.

”There weren’t enough.”

”And the contract?”

”Reclassified locally as incomplete due to changed conditions. Client warned.”

Kael handed the report back.

”That was reasonable.”

Derrick looked surprised.

”No one investigated?”

”With what?” Galahad asked. ”At the time, three dead boars suggested a large predator. That is unusual, not automatically a C-rank emergency.”

Derrick fell quiet.

Galahad was right.

The Guild could not send high-level investigations every time an animal died strangely.

The pattern only became obvious because they were looking backward with knowledge they had not possessed then.

Kael pointed toward the map.

”Mark it.”

Teren did.

Three dead boars.

Agitated pack animal.

Repeated cries.

Then Rellan.

The marks formed no perfect line.

But they clustered.

West of the northwest route.

Near the abandoned logging paths.

Galahad looked toward the remaining records.

”Keep going.”

They did.

Another hour passed.

Nothing.

Then another.

Still nothing.

Derrick rubbed both hands over his face.

”How many times can people gather mushrooms in the same forest?”

”As many times as clients pay them,” Teren said.

”I’m starting to hate mushrooms.”

”You should hear how mushrooms feel.”

Derrick looked at him.

”I will throw you out the window.”

”We’re on the ground floor.”

”I’ll still do it.”

Kael would have laughed more if Rellan’s pack were not sitting between them.

Instead, he reached for another record.

Delayed return.

His eyes sharpened.

”Galahad.”

The Guild leader looked up immediately.

Kael read.

”E-rank escort. Twelve days ago. Returned four hours late.”

”Reason?”

”Route obstruction.”

”Which route?”

”Northwest.”

Galahad moved closer.

Kael continued reading.

The escort involved a herbal merchant traveling toward a charcoal settlement.

The party had returned safely.

Their delay came from finding a tree lying across the road.

Nothing unusual.

Until the debrief.

Tree appeared recently broken. No storm reported. Party noted large scrape marks along trunk.

The room went quiet.

Darius had described something similar beyond the first rise.

Iris had found bark damaged above shoulder height.

Kael placed the contract beside the boar report.

”That makes four.”

Galahad corrected him.

”Four connected possibilities.”

”Fair.”

Teren marked the location.

Again westward.

Again near the same corridor.

Derrick stared at the map.

”It’s getting closer.”

Kael looked at him.

”To what?”

Derrick pointed.

”The Guild.”

He was right.

The earliest incident sat farther northwest.

Later reports appeared progressively closer to the main route.

Not perfectly.

Not enough to prove something was moving toward Blackwood.

But enough that Kael understood why Derrick had noticed.

Galahad studied the pattern.

”Could be route usage.”

Kael looked toward him.

”More adventurers traveled closer areas as the Guild became busier.”

”Yes.”

”So we don’t know whether the incidents moved or whether our people simply encountered more of them.”

”Exactly.”

Derrick groaned.

”You two are exhausting.”

Kael ignored him.

The office door opened.

Everyone looked up.

The senior clerk stood there.

He had been sorting client records outside.

”Galahad.”

Something in his voice changed the room.

Galahad rose.

”What?”

”I found another one.”

The clerk entered carrying a request form.

Not a completed contract.

A client complaint.

”From when?”

”Six days ago.”

He placed it on the desk.

A charcoal worker had reported that two loaded carts failed to reach the northern burn site.

Kael frowned.

”Failed to reach it?”

The clerk nodded.

”Timber carts.”

”Drivers?”

”Two men.”

Derrick stood.

”They went missing?”

”No.”

Galahad was already reading.

”The drivers returned.”

He scanned the report.

”On foot.”

Kael moved closer.

”What happened?”

Galahad read aloud.

”Both men claimed their horses panicked near the western bend. One cart overturned. The second horse broke loose. They abandoned the loads after hearing movement in the trees.”

Teren looked toward the map.

”Did they report it to us?”

”They reported it to the charcoal foreman. Foreman brought it here.”

”Why wasn’t it a quest?”

Galahad continued reading.

”Workers recovered both carts the next day.”

”Anything missing?”

”Food.”

Derrick frowned.

”Bandits?”

”Maybe.”

”Animals?”

”Maybe.”

Kael looked toward the bottom.

”Anything else?”

Galahad became still.

”Yes.”

He turned the page.

Recovered wagon canvas torn approximately nine feet above ground after cart overturned against embankment.

Nobody spoke.

Teren slowly moved another marker onto the map.

The points were accumulating.

Not one dramatic event.

A sequence of small things no one had understood when they happened.

Kael looked around the office.

”How many more?”

Galahad surveyed the remaining paperwork.

”Not many.”

”Then we finish.”

Derrick looked toward the window.

Dawn was beginning to lighten the glass.

”We’ve been here all night.”

”Yes.”

Teren yawned.

”I would like to formally object.”

”Object while reading.”

Teren sighed and picked up another contract.

They finished before sunrise.

Every northwest Guild record had been reviewed.

Every strange report had either been connected to the investigation or deliberately excluded.

Galahad created a final list.

Northwest Incident Review — COMPLETE

Confirmed relevant or potentially related reports:

1. Three boars found killed by unknown large predator — 16 days ago

2. Pack animal panic near western tree line — 14 days ago

3. Repeated cries heard west of assigned route — 11 days ago

4. Large scrape marks on fallen roadside tree — 12 days ago

5. Charcoal transport horses panicked; high canvas tear on recovered cart — 6 days ago

6. False Guild marker placed at west-trail junction — recent

7. Rellan Dorr party diverted west and missing — current

8. Rellan party equipment recovered beyond first rise; blood and large-track evidence present — current

Kael read the list.

”Order the dates properly.”

Teren stared at him.

”Now?”

”Yes.”

”You are a cruel man.”

”Apparently.”

They reordered the incidents chronologically.

The pattern became slightly clearer.

Not clear enough.

But real.

Galahad leaned back in his chair.

”The records review is finished.”

No one argued.

That task had an ending.

They knew what the Guild knew.

Now they needed information outside the Guild.

Kael looked toward the map.

”Charcoal workers.”

Galahad nodded.

”Woodcutters.”

”Farmers northwest.”

”Merchants using the route before the Guild opened.”

Teren rubbed his eyes.

”That sounds like another night of paperwork.”

”No.”

Galahad stood.

”That sounds like interviews.”

Derrick looked toward Rellan’s pack.

”Can I go?”

Galahad glanced at him.

”No.”

Derrick’s shoulders tightened.

Then Galahad continued.

”You can interview people here.”

Derrick blinked.

”What?”

”Anyone coming through the Guild who used the northwest route before opening. Merchants. Hunters. Woodcutters.”

”That counts?”

”It counts if you ask useful questions and write useful answers.”

Derrick nodded.

”I can do that.”

Kael looked toward him.

”No leading questions.”

Derrick frowned.

”What does that mean?”

”Don’t ask, ’Did you see the monster that took Rellan?’”

Teren laughed.

Derrick looked annoyed.

Kael continued.

”Ask what they saw. What they heard. When. Where.”

Derrick nodded slowly.

”Fine.”

Galahad pointed toward Teren.

”You help.”

Teren looked devastated.

”I thought I was going to sleep.”

”You can sleep after sunrise.”

”It is sunrise.”

”Then after breakfast.”

Kael almost felt sorry for him.

Almost.

The first people arrived before breakfast was finished.

Not because Galahad summoned them.

Because the northwest closure had begun producing questions.

Two charcoal workers entered asking when Guild escorts would resume.

A merchant wanted compensation for a delayed delivery.

A hunter wanted to know whether the road was closed only to adventurers or everyone.

Galahad answered each question carefully.

The Guild could prohibit its own members from taking missions through the corridor.

It could warn civilians.

It could not legally close every public road in Blackwood by itself.

That would require House authority.

Kael issued the temporary restriction before noon.

Not a total road closure.

Commercial traffic could still use the established main route as far as the charcoal settlements, but travelers were warned not to enter western side trails. No Guild missions would proceed northwest until further review, and House messengers carried notice to the nearby work camps.

It was another immediate task finished.

Not a solution.

A containment measure.

Then the interviews began.

Most produced nothing.

A woodcutter had heard wolves.

A hunter had seen a large bird.

One merchant claimed he had witnessed a demon in the trees until further questioning revealed he had been drinking heavily and the ”demon” possessed antlers.

Teren crossed that one out.

Derrick looked disappointed.

”What?”

”I liked the demon.”

”You liked the drunk merchant.”

”He had commitment.”

By midday, they had collected only two reports worth keeping.

The first came from an older charcoal worker.

”About a month ago,” he said.

Galahad leaned forward.

”Before the Guild opened?”

”Yes.”

”What happened?”

”Found a deer.”

Derrick glanced toward Teren.

Teren whispered, ”Promising.”

Galahad ignored them.

”Dead?”

”Mostly.”

Kael frowned.

”Mostly?”

The man shifted uncomfortably.

”Something had torn into it. Not eaten properly.”

”What do you mean properly?”

”Predators eat.”

The worker shrugged.

”This looked... ruined.”

”Tracks?”

”Couldn’t tell you.”

”Where?”

He pointed toward the map.

West.

Farther west than the Guild route.

Still within the same broad woodland.

Galahad marked it.

The second useful report came from a merchant.

Not a Guild client.

A man who had used Blackwood’s northwest road for years before gradually reducing his visits.

He listened to the questions.

Then asked:

”You mean the screaming?”

The room became still.

Kael looked toward him.

”What screaming?”

The merchant blinked.

”You don’t know?”

”Tell us.”

He leaned both elbows on the counter.

”Last winter.”

Galahad’s expression sharpened.

”Last winter?”

”Twice.”

”Where?”

”Northwest road. After dark.”

Derrick leaned forward.

”What did it sound like?”

The merchant looked toward him.

”Someone calling.”

”Words?”

”Couldn’t tell.”

”Man? Woman?”

”Changed.”

That answer made Iris, who had entered quietly during the interview, stop near the back wall.

Kael noticed her expression.

”What?”

She looked toward the merchant.

”Changed how?”

He hesitated.

”First time sounded like a woman.”

”And the second?”

”A child.”

Silence.

The merchant looked uncomfortable now.

”I never went looking.”

”No one is accusing you,” Galahad said.

”I thought it was some animal.”

”Maybe it was.”

The merchant nodded quickly.

”Exactly.”

Iris approached the counter.

”Same location both times?”

”No.”

”Distance apart?”

”Couple miles.”

”Same side of road?”

”West.”

Iris looked toward Galahad.

That was enough to matter.

Not enough to classify.

But enough.

The cries had existed before the Adventure Guild.

Months before Rellan.

Kael looked at the incident list.

”So the Guild didn’t create this.”

”No,” Galahad said.

The false Guild marker was recent.

The underlying threat was not.

Someone—or something—had adapted to the Guild.

That was worse.

Derrick understood too.

”The marker.”

Galahad nodded.

”Whatever was happening west of the road existed first.”

”And then someone learned adventurers were coming.”

”Possibly.”

Iris looked at the white route stake on the desk.

”Someone definitely understood travel patterns.”

Kael looked toward her.

”Could an animal make those?”

”No.”

Simple answer.

Useful.

A human—or another intelligent being—had placed the markers.

The creature tracks might belong to something separate.

Or not.

They still did not know.

The Guild door opened again.

Everyone looked up.

This time, a young charcoal worker stood in the entrance.

He was breathing hard.

Mud covered his boots to the ankle.

Galahad immediately stood.

”What happened?”

The man looked around.

”Is this the Adventure Guild?”

”Yes.”

”I need someone.”

Galahad moved toward him.

”Slow down.”

The worker tried.

Failed.

”One of ours didn’t come back.”

The room changed.

Kael felt it instantly.

Not a rumor.

Not an old contract.

Now.

Galahad’s voice remained steady.

”Who?”

”Derren.”

Kael did not recognize the name.

Good.

No unnecessary new Guild adventurer.

A charcoal worker.

”Full name?”

The man shook his head.

”Just Derren to us. Works the northern burn pits.”

”When was he due?”

”Last night.”

”Where was he?”

”Checking the western stacks.”

Iris’s eyes narrowed.

”Alone?”

”Yes.”

Galahad looked toward the worker.

”Why alone?”

”He wasn’t far from camp.”

”How far?”

”Maybe twenty minutes.”

”When did anyone check?”

”After he missed supper.”

”And?”

”Found his lantern.”

No one spoke.

Galahad asked:

”Blood?”

”No.”

”Tracks?”

”Couldn’t tell. Ground is dry there.”

”Anything else?”

The worker swallowed.

”Yes.”

”What?”

”There was a mark on one of the trees.”

Iris stepped forward.

”What kind?”

The worker lifted one finger.

Then drew a slash in the air.

”White.”

Silence took the Guild.

Not imagined.

Not retrospective.

Not a strange note from eleven days ago.

Another person was missing.

And the same unfamiliar route mark had appeared near where he vanished.

Galahad looked toward the C-rank search sheet he had closed the previous evening.

That investigation was finished.

This was no longer only Rellan Dorr’s missing party.

Kael watched the Guild leader’s face change.

Not fear.

Decision.

”Close the northern charcoal access.”

The clerk looked up.

”All of it?”

”For Guild traffic, yes.”

Kael answered the other half.

”House warning goes out immediately. No workers enter western stacks alone. Nobody follows white markings. Nobody investigates voices from beyond the work perimeter.”

The charcoal worker stared.

”Voices?”

Galahad looked toward him.

”You’ve heard them?”

The man went pale.

That was answer enough.

Iris stepped closer.

”How often?”

He swallowed.

”Not me.”

”Who?”

”People at the camp.”

”How long?”

The man looked between them.

”Months.”

Derrick stood so quickly his chair scraped backward.

”Months?”

Galahad raised one hand.

”Derrick.”

He stopped.

Barely.

Galahad looked back at the worker.

”Why was that never reported?”

”It was.”

”To whom?”

The man hesitated.

”Foreman. Road wardens before that. Whoever came through.”

”And what were you told?”

”That foxes make strange sounds.”

Iris’s expression hardened.

Kael looked toward the map.

The problem had just grown beyond the Guild’s three weeks of records.

The Adventure Guild had not discovered a new threat.

It had stumbled into an old one.

And now that adventurers were traveling the northwest road regularly, something had begun drawing them away from it.

Galahad walked to the mission board.

He removed the closed C-rank sheet.

For several seconds, he simply held it.

Then he placed a fresh sheet beneath Rellan’s missing-party notice.

He did not write A-rank.

Not yet.

Instead:

NORTHWEST INCIDENT — ESCALATING

Known missing:

Rellan Dorr’s three-person adventuring party

One charcoal worker

Confirmed indicators:

False Guild route marker

Unknown white trail markers

Repeated historical cries from western forest

Large predator or creature evidence

Multiple unexplained animal deaths / panic events

Human route manipulation suspected

Current classification: PENDING SENIOR REVIEW

Kael read it.

”Senior review means Darius.”

”And me,” Galahad said.

Iris added, ”And someone needs to inspect the charcoal site before the trail changes.”

Galahad looked at her.

”Yes.”

Derrick stepped forward.

”No.”

Everyone turned.

Derrick looked at Galahad.

”You’re going to tell me no again.”

”Yes.”

”I know.”

That surprised him.

Derrick continued.

”But this is another person. Right now.”

Galahad’s expression softened only slightly.

”I know.”

Derrick looked toward Rellan’s pack.

Then the new missing notice.

He clenched his jaw.

And stepped back.

”Fine.”

No argument.

No attempt to run out the door.

That mattered.

Galahad turned toward the charcoal worker.

”You’re going to show Iris exactly where the lantern was found.”

The man nodded quickly.

”Sir Darius goes with her.”

Kael looked toward Galahad.

”And you?”

”I stay long enough to complete the classification review.”

There it was.

The next step.

Not another random search.

Not another half-finished response.

They had finished reviewing the Guild’s records.

Finished gathering the first round of older testimony.

Finished proving Rellan’s disappearance was not isolated.

Now they had a second active disappearance tied to the same signs.

The escalation had earned its next stage.

Kael looked toward the fresh board.

One missing adventuring party could have been a failed mission.

One missing charcoal worker could have been an accident.

False markers could have been bandits.

Claw tracks could have been a beast.

Voices could have been animals.

Any one explanation alone remained possible.

Together, they were becoming harder to dismiss.

The Guild hall had grown silent around them.

Galahad picked up his coat.

”Send for Darius.”

Kael nodded.

This time, nobody needed to ask why.
