The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

Damien Ravenmoor left Blackwood before the first morning bell.

Kael had expected that fact to make the entire morning feel different.

Instead, Blackwood woke exactly as it always did.

Kitchen fires appeared behind village homes. Stable hands carried feed toward the manor horses. A pair of quarry wagons creaked along the eastern road before sunrise, their drivers wrapped in heavy cloaks against the morning chill. The Black Dragon changed watches at the gate, and somewhere near the unfinished row of Stonebrook houses, workers were already preparing tools for another day of construction.

Even the Blackwood Adventurers’ Guild had lights burning in two windows.

Mira and Nalia were probably not there yet.

Galahad might be.

Kael would not put it past him.

Damien stood in the Black Dragon courtyard with his traveling pack secured across his shoulders, spear in hand, armor beneath a dark traveling cloak, and seven pairs of socks packed somewhere beneath enough equipment to survive Grom’s final inspection.

The House courier group waited near the outer gate.

Three riders.

One light wagon carrying sealed correspondence and official goods.

Damien would travel with them until the eastern junction, where he would join the larger Imperial convoy heading toward the frontier.

No parade waited for him.

No musicians.

No crowd from Blackwood had been summoned to watch one soldier leave for an assignment.

The people present were there because they wanted to be.

Sir Elias Thorn stood beside Sir Marcus Wintermere near the barracks entrance. Hugo Stone had arrived carrying two cups and was drinking from both because Damien had refused the first one. Iris Hollow leaned against a post with her arms folded. Jessa Cor, Tavin Holt, Perrin Vale, Sera Venn, Milo Renwick, and several other members of the original fifty had gathered in loose groups rather than forming ranks.

Grom stood closest to Damien.

Darius stood beside him.

Kael approached from the manor road with Edwin several steps behind.

Damien looked toward Kael.

”You’re late.”

Kael looked toward the sky.

”The sun is not even properly awake.”

”You knew when I was leaving.”

”I’m a prince. You wait.”

Grom turned his head slightly.

Kael corrected himself. ”Apparently not.”

Damien smiled.

The humor helped.

A little.

Darius looked toward the courier group. ”Five minutes.”

Damien nodded.

He had already gone through every inspection that mattered. His weapon was ready. His money had been divided between separate pouches. His travel documents were sealed. The formal orders were secured beneath his clothing instead of sitting somewhere easy to lose or steal. He carried House identification, Black Dragon credentials, and the frontier evaluation documents that explained what authority he did and did not possess.

Nothing remained to prepare.

That made the waiting worse.

Sir Elias stepped forward first.

”Six months.”

Damien nodded.

”Try not to become unbearable.”

Damien stared at him. ”You became a knight and immediately started calling yourself Sir Elias every time someone forgot.”

”I earned it.”

”You reminded a baker.”

”He asked my name.”

Marcus shook his head.

Elias looked toward him. ”You are supposed to support me.”

”I was there.”

Damien laughed.

Then Elias embraced him.

Briefly.

Harder than expected.

”Come back,” Elias said quietly.

Damien’s smile faded only slightly. ”Planning to.”

Marcus came next. He did not say much. He clasped Damien’s forearm, then handed him a folded piece of parchment.

Damien looked down.

”What is this?”

”Notes.”

”About what?”

”Greywatch construction practices.”

Damien stared.

Marcus continued, ”If you see anything interesting.”

”I am going to the frontier for military evaluation.”

”Yes.”

”And you want bridge notes.”

”Roads too.”

Damien looked toward Kael.

”This is your fault.”

Kael raised both hands. ”I did nothing.”

Marcus added, ”Drainage.”

Damien shoved the parchment into his pack.

”Fine.”

Milo approached with considerably less dignity.

He held out a small wrapped packet.

Damien looked suspicious.

”What?”

”Food.”

Grom immediately turned.

Milo stepped backward.

”It is legal food.”

”That should not require explanation,” Grom said.

”It does around you.”

Damien took the packet.

”What is it?”

”Sweetbread.”

Damien smiled. ”You are my favorite.”

Elias looked offended.

Milo nodded solemnly. ”Correct.”

Sera handed Damien something far less comforting: a compact whetstone.

”You will lose yours.”

”I already have one.”

”You will lose it.”

Damien accepted the second.

Iris approached last among them.

She looked at his pack.

”Too heavy.”

Damien turned toward Grom. ”See?”

Grom remained unmoved.

Iris continued, ”Not dangerously.”

Damien smiled at Grom.

The goblin Deputy Commander ignored him.

”Do not smile at me. You still packed too much.”

Hugo finally offered Damien the second cup.

Damien took it this time.

”What is it?”

”Tea.”

Damien drank.

His face twisted.

”That is not tea.”

”It has leaves.”

”That does not make it tea.”

Hugo shrugged.

Kael stood slightly apart and watched the original Black Dragons say goodbye in the only way they seemed capable of doing: by insulting Damien’s packing, giving him useful equipment, threatening him with future work, and refusing to make the departure heavier than it already was.

It felt right.

Darius finally stepped forward.

The courtyard quieted naturally.

”Damien.”

”Yes, Commander.”

”Report to the courier captain until the junction. After transfer, you follow the frontier chain of command listed in your orders. If circumstances change, you adapt within lawful authority. You do not use House Kael’s name to avoid duties assigned equally to everyone else.”

”Yes, Commander.”

”You do not use having passed the Knight Examination to demand standing you have not yet accepted through consecration.”

”Yes, Commander.”

”You observe before judging the frontier.”

Damien nodded.

”Learn how they move men. How they maintain supplies. How they respond when plans fail. Watch officers who are good at their work. Watch officers who are bad at it. Learn from both.”

”Yes.”

Darius paused.

Then his tone changed.

Less commander.

Still Darius.

”Do not spend six months trying to prove you deserve to be there.”

Damien looked at him.

”You already earned the evaluation.”

The courtyard remained silent.

”Use it.”

Damien straightened.

”Yes, Commander.”

Grom stepped forward after Darius.

He looked Damien over once more.

No pack inspection this time.

No socks.

”You know what to do if you do not understand an order.”

”Ask.”

”If asking is impossible?”

”Observe the people who do understand it.”

”If they are all fools?”

Damien smiled faintly. ”Then I have a different problem.”

Grom nodded.

”And if you make a mistake?”

”Correct it.”

”Not?”

”Hide it.”

”Good.”

Grom held out his forearm.

Damien clasped it.

Then Grom pulled him forward and struck one fist lightly against Damien’s shoulder.

”Return useful.”

Damien laughed. ”Not alive?”

”That is included.”

Kael smiled.

That was Grom.

Damien turned toward him last.

For a moment, all the jokes Kael had considered disappeared.

He had imagined saying something memorable.

Something a prince might say when sending one of his soldiers beyond his territory for six months.

Instead, he asked, ”Everything packed?”

Damien stared at him.

”Really?”

Kael smiled.

”Seven pairs?”

”Seven.”

”Then you’re ready.”

Damien laughed once.

Then the laughter faded.

”I’ll write.”

”You better.”

”Not every week.”

”I did not ask every week.”

”You were thinking it.”

Kael frowned. ”Everyone has started doing that.”

”Because you make it obvious.”

Kael stepped closer.

”Come back when the six months are done.”

Damien nodded.

”And if the frontier tries to keep you?”

”I tell them my prince is difficult.”

”Good.”

”And possessive.”

”Careful.”

Damien smiled.

Then they embraced.

Not prince and soldier.

Not lord and subordinate.

Just two people who had spent enough time building something together that six months suddenly seemed much longer than it had on paper.

When they separated, Kael kept one hand on Damien’s shoulder.

”You do not need to come back the same.”

Damien’s expression changed.

Kael continued, ”Just come back knowing more than when you left.”

Damien nodded slowly.

”I can do that.”

Darius looked toward the gate.

”Time.”

Damien exhaled.

Then he turned.

The Black Dragons did not salute him as though he were a departing commander. They were his comrades, not his soldiers.

But several raised fists.

Others tapped weapons against armor.

Hugo shouted, ”Bring the socks back!”

Damien turned while walking backward.

”I’m burning all of them!”

Grom’s expression hardened.

Damien immediately turned around again.

The courtyard broke into laughter.

Then he mounted.

The House courier group began moving.

Kael walked as far as the outer gate with everyone else.

The road beyond Blackwood stretched east beneath pale morning light, still damp from night mist. Damien rode near the rear of the small group. At the gate, he turned once.

No speech.

Just one raised hand.

Kael raised his own.

Then Damien Ravenmoor passed beyond the gate.

The riders grew smaller.

The wagon followed.

Eventually the curve of the road took them from sight.

Kael remained there several seconds longer.

Elias stood beside him.

”Well.”

Kael looked toward him.

Elias exhaled.

”He actually left.”

Marcus joined them.

”That is usually what departure means.”

Elias glared.

Kael laughed despite himself.

Behind them, Grom’s voice carried across the courtyard.

”Morning drill in ten minutes.”

Several Black Dragons groaned.

Elias turned.

”After that?”

Grom stared at him.

”You are not leaving for six months.”

”Apparently neither am I.”

”Then drill.”

The courtyard began moving again.

Kael watched.

That was perhaps the strangest part.

Damien had left.

Blackwood had not stopped.

The Blackwood Adventurers’ Guild opened its doors at the first bell without Kael.

He arrived almost an hour later.

Galahad noticed immediately.

”You survived.”

Kael looked toward him.

”What?”

”Opening without witnessing it.”

”This is day six.”

”Yes.”

”I have seen you open the doors.”

”Five times.”

Kael frowned.

Galahad smiled.

The Guild Hall had already settled into morning activity. Mira Doss sat behind the Registry Counter reviewing two adventurer records with the concentration of a judge deciding a border dispute. Nalia Greve was standing rather than sitting because three clients had arrived almost simultaneously and she had decided directing them physically toward the correct place was faster than repeating herself.

The Quest Board contained twelve active postings.

The distribution interested Kael more now than the raw number.

Seven F-rank.

Three E-rank.

One D-rank.

One contract awaiting verification before final rank assignment.

Rellan Dorr’s caravan escort remained on the Active Contracts section with DAY 2 written beneath the route record.

No emergency notice.

No missing party.

No unexplained silence.

Just an escort still underway.

Kael looked toward the System.

[Blackwood Adventurers’ Guild — Day 6]

Registered Adventurers: 46

Confirmed Rank Placements: 30

F-Rank: 18

E-Rank: 11

D-Rank: 1

C-Rank and Above: 0

Active Contracts: 12

Completed Contracts: 10

Properly Withdrawn: 1

Serious Incidents: 0

Operational Status: Stable

Forty-six.

Three more since yesterday.

Enough growth to notice.

Not enough to overwhelm the institution.

Galahad followed Kael’s gaze toward the board.

”You are allowed to touch one.”

Kael looked at him suspiciously.

”Why?”

”We are replacing it.”

”Which?”

Galahad pointed toward the carved rank explanation mounted beside the Quest Board.

Kael read it.

The current version listed the letters and basic contract limits, but after several days of questions, the wording had clearly proved too vague.

”What is wrong with it?”

”People hear ’rank’ and assume it means combat strength.”

Kael nodded.

They had already seen that.

Galahad handed him the replacement notice.

The new version was clearer.

GUILD RANK REPRESENTS VERIFIED RESPONSIBILITY

F — Entry standing. Low-risk work and supervised participation where permitted.

E — Proven basic field competence. Limited independent work.

D — Reliable regional adventurer. Independent operation on established dangerous routes and threats within D-rank limits.

C — Experienced professional trusted with serious field work and higher-risk independent contracts.

B — Veteran specialist trusted with major hazardous assignments.

A — Elite adventurer qualified for exceptional regional threats and high-risk operations.

S — Extraordinary standing reserved for threats and responsibilities beyond normal A-rank operations.

Beneath that, in larger lettering:

RANK DOES NOT GRANT CIVIL, MILITARY, OR JUDICIAL AUTHORITY.

Kael smiled.

”That needs to stay.”

”It will.”

Another paragraph explained advancement.

Completed contracts mattered.

So did reliability.

Judgment.

Safety.

Discipline.

Practical evaluations.

Leadership where appropriate.

A failure caused by an intelligent withdrawal would not automatically prevent advancement. Reckless success could count less favorably than a responsible retreat.

Kael looked toward Galahad.

”You put that plainly.”

”I have already explained it twenty times.”

”Twenty?”

”Nalia has explained it more.”

From the counter, Nalia raised a hand without looking up.

”Thirty-two.”

Kael laughed.

Galahad removed the old notice.

Kael helped attach the replacement.

The System responded.

[Guild Rank Framework — Public Clarity Improved]

Common misconception addressed: Rank ≠ raw combat power

Authority limits displayed publicly

Advancement criteria displayed publicly

Projected dispute reduction: Moderate

Kael stepped back.

The ranked Quest Board made more sense beside it now.

An F-rank badge did not mean weak.

It meant new or insufficiently verified.

An A-rank badge would not mean king.

It would mean the Guild trusted that adventurer to accept work where failure carried serious consequences.

That difference would become more important as the Guild grew.

Across the Commons, someone shouted.

Kael turned.

The same F-rank adventurer suspended two days earlier for the soup fight stood beside the serving counter.

Galahad sighed.

”Again?”

”No,” Nalia called. ”He is apologizing.”

Everyone looked.

The adventurer immediately appeared to regret having witnesses.

His former opponent stood across from him holding a bowl.

Kael almost laughed at the symmetry.

The first man muttered something.

”What?” the other asked.

”I said I shouldn’t have swung.”

The second adventurer stared.

Then shrugged.

”I shouldn’t have shoved you.”

Silence.

The first looked toward Galahad.

”Can we work tomorrow?”

Galahad folded his arms.

”Your suspension ends tomorrow morning.”

”Together?”

”That is your mistake to make.”

Several people laughed.

The two men did not fight.

Progress.

The System did not create a milestone.

Kael liked that.

Not everything needed one.

The Guild Relief Reserve became official before midday.

Not large.

Not impressive.

Sustainable.

Galahad had revised the proposal with Vessa, Nalia, Mira, Edwin, and Kael’s financial clerks until every sentence that sounded generous but financially undefined had been removed.

The final structure was simple.

A portion of actual Guild operating surplus would be moved into a protected reserve at regular intervals.

Not a percentage of gross contract rewards.

The Guild did not own those.

Not even immediately from every brokerage fee, because wages, supplies, records, healer rotations, building maintenance, and ordinary operations had to be paid first.

Surplus.

Verified.

Then allocated.

The reserve would initially cover emergency recovery transport for adventurers injured during registered contracts, extraordinary medical costs beyond ordinary Infirmary stabilization where approved, modest burial assistance, and reasonable efforts to return remains to recognized family when possible and lawful.

It did not promise lifelong disability support.

It did not promise expensive magical treatment.

It did not promise a new limb.

Not yet.

Blackwood could not honor those promises reliably.

The Guild would rather promise little and pay it than promise everything and fail the first dead adventurer’s family.

Kael signed the House authorization where territorial approval was required.

Galahad signed as Guild Leader.

Nalia opened the reserve ledger.

Mira recorded the policy in the Guild rules.

Vessa read the final medical language once more.

Then she nodded.

”Fine.”

Galahad looked exhausted.

”That is the closest thing to praise I have received all week.”

”It means I found nothing dangerous.”

”I’ll take it.”

The System appeared.

[Blackwood Adventurers’ Guild — Member Protection Function Established]

Guild Relief Reserve: ACTIVE

Initial coverage:

Emergency recovery transport

Approved extraordinary contract-related medical support

Modest burial assistance

Return of remains where practical and lawful

Funding source: Verified Guild operating surplus

Current reserve balance: Minimal

Warning: Benefits must remain proportional to available funds

Kael focused on minimal.

Good.

The System refused to make the reserve look more impressive merely because the policy existed.

Galahad closed the ledger.

”Now we need years of everyone not needing it.”

Vessa shook her head.

”That is not how dangerous work functions.”

”I know.”

A runner entered from the rear yard.

”Guild Master.”

Galahad turned.

”Carcass at the gate.”

Kael looked interested immediately.

Galahad looked toward him.

”No.”

”I said nothing.”

”You became interested.”

”That is not illegal.”

They went anyway.

The carcass belonged to an E-rank contract completed that morning.

Two adventurers had been hired to kill a pack of unusually aggressive tusked burrowers damaging vegetable plots near one of the southern farms. The creatures were not magical threats of great importance. They were large, ugly, heavily muscled animals with broad digging claws and enough tusk to injure anyone foolish enough to stand directly in front of them.

Three had been killed.

The farmers wanted the bodies removed.

The adventurers wanted to know whether anything was valuable.

The Guild had no Harvester.

That had not changed overnight.

Galahad stood in the rear processing yard with Hugo Stone, an older local butcher, and the two adventurers.

The butcher examined one carcass.

”Meat?”

”Edible if cleaned quickly,” one adventurer said.

The butcher nodded.

”Hide is poor.”

Hugo inspected a tusk.

”These might sell.”

Kael looked toward Galahad.

”Basic processing?”

”Within current ability.”

”No glands?”

The butcher stared at him.

”What glands?”

Kael raised his hands.

”Good question.”

Galahad sighed.

The System appeared.

[Carcass Assessment — Institutional Capacity Check]

Creature classification: Non-magical animal / verified

Hazardous magical anatomy: None identified

Processing capability required: Ordinary butcher / experienced hunter

Licensed Harvester required: NO

Kael smiled.

Good distinction.

A Harvester was not a fancy word for butcher.

The Guild did not need to invent a specialist every time something died.

The two adventurers chose to sell the tusks and usable meat through the Guild rather than negotiate separately. Nalia would record the sale, the Guild would take a modest commission for appraisal and brokerage, and the remainder would go to the adventurers according to their party agreement.

Kael watched the butcher begin working.

Galahad looked toward him.

”This is the easy version.”

”I know.”

”When something arrives glowing?”

”We say no unless someone knows what it is.”

”Good.”

”Or smoking.”

”No.”

”Moving after death?”

”Definitely no.”

Kael smiled.

Hugo looked toward them.

”Can both of you leave?”

They left.

By afternoon, Blackwood’s population work had begun producing consequences Kael had not expected to see so quickly.

Not population growth.

Schedules.

The newly completed Population & Labor Analysis had allowed Edwin and Lily to separate people who were truly available for additional work from people who only appeared available when viewed through a poorly written census.

The result was a new labor map covering the administrative wall.

Kael stood before it with Bram.

”This looks worse.”

Bram nodded.

”It is better.”

”Edwin says that.”

”He is right.”

Kael frowned.

Colored marks—simple physical pins and parchment labels rather than anything magical—now distinguished full-time labor shortages, seasonal shortages, apprenticeships, retired skills, secondary occupations, and people willing to teach or work part time.

The former mason who farmed most of the year had agreed to teach basic stone-setting during part of the winter if compensated.

One of the two literate sisters identified through the census was willing to teach children three afternoons each week but did not want to leave her family’s farm.

The retired cavalryman would help Grom’s village-watch program twice each month.

A woman who had assisted a healer years earlier agreed to speak with Tessa Wyn about whether her old skills could be refreshed.

None of those people had changed occupation.

Blackwood had simply stopped treating occupations as if each person possessed one useful skill and nothing else.

The System summarized:

[Labor Utilization — Early Matches]

Full occupational transfer: 2 potential

Formal apprenticeship interest: 7 active

Seasonal instruction candidates: 4

Part-time service candidates: 6

Medical skill reactivation candidates: 1

Administrative literacy candidates: 3

Warning: Candidate interest does not equal confirmed availability.

Kael nodded.

”Still asking.”

”Good,” Bram said.

They moved toward the Oakridge education file.

The old school building had been inspected that morning.

It was not ruined.

The roof needed work.

Two windows were broken.

One section of flooring had warped from moisture.

The stove needed replacement.

Furniture was sparse.

The structure itself remained sound.

More importantly, Lily’s messenger had found the retired teacher Tomas mentioned.

Master Rennick was alive.

He lived with his daughter.

He was sixty-eight.

And according to the messenger, he had responded to the question of whether he would consider teaching again by saying:

”Depends whether the children have become stupider since I retired.”

Kael smiled.

”I like him.”

”You have never met him,” Edwin said.

”I still like him.”

The retired teacher had agreed to visit Oakridge in two days.

Visit.

Not accept the position.

Kael looked toward the System.

[Oakridge Education Restoration]

School structure: Repairable

Potential teacher: Identified

Teacher acceptance: Pending

Student availability: Unverified

Books / teaching materials: Limited but existing

Immediate construction recommendation: Minor repair only pending program confirmation

Kael sighed.

”Even the school is telling me not to renovate it yet.”

Edwin looked toward him.

”The school is not telling you anything.”

”You know what I mean.”

”I am increasingly concerned that I do.”

They approved roof protection, broken-window repair, and measures preventing further water damage.

Nothing more until Master Rennick visited and they understood whether an actual school could operate.

Another problem measured before expansion.

Kael was beginning to suspect the System had trained him.

Damien was several hours beyond Blackwood by then.

Kael knew because the first courier acknowledgment arrived shortly before evening.

Not from Damien personally.

From the eastern junction.

The House courier captain reported that the group had arrived without incident and that Damien Ravenmoor had transferred successfully to the Imperial frontier convoy according to orders.

That was all.

One paragraph.

Kael read it three times.

Edwin watched from across the desk.

”He reached the junction.”

”Yes.”

”Then the system worked.”

Kael looked toward him.

”What system?”

”The travel arrangements.”

”Oh.”

Edwin’s mouth moved slightly.

Almost a smile.

Kael placed the report beside the Guild ledger.

The contrast was strange.

One paper said Damien had reached a road junction.

The other said the Blackwood Adventurers’ Guild had registered forty-six people.

Neither sounded like a great event.

Both mattered.

The System appeared.

[Damien Ravenmoor — Frontier Evaluation]

Departure from Blackwood: CONFIRMED

Transfer to designated Imperial convoy: CONFIRMED

Current status: In transit

Evaluation duration: 6 months

House affiliation: Retained

Black Dragon affiliation: Retained

Knight Examination: Passed

Church Consecration: Not completed

Formal Imperial Knight Status: Not recognized

Kael stared at the panel.

Then another line appeared.

[House Personnel Status updated.]

That was all.

No quest.

No reward.

No dramatic notification.

Damien leaving was not one of Kael’s achievements.

It was Damien’s choice.

Kael dismissed the System.

”Take the countdown off the daily overview.”

Edwin looked toward him.

”What countdown?”

Kael paused.

”Nothing.”

He smiled faintly.

There would be no more number decreasing each evening.

Damien was gone.

Now the measure was not how long until he left.

It was what happened while he was away.

Kael visited the Guild shortly before closing.

The public hall had thinned considerably. Several adventurers remained in the Commons eating, while two parties sat with maps and copied contracts spread between mugs. Mira was reconciling registration records. Nalia was counting the day’s held rewards with another clerk. Galahad stood near the Quest Board reading a newly submitted request.

Kael approached.

”What is it?”

”Roof repair.”

Kael stared.

”Guild contract?”

”For a widow outside Bellhaven.”

”Why not village labor?”

”She asked the Guild because her sons are away working in Stonebrook and she can pay.”

Kael looked toward the contract.

”No danger?”

”Height.”

”Rank?”

”F.”

Kael smiled.

The Blackwood Adventurers’ Guild was becoming stranger than he had originally imagined.

Not every adventurer contract was a monster hunt.

Somebody could climb a roof.

Somebody could deliver medicine.

Somebody could escort a wagon.

Somebody could gather herbs.

Somebody could track an animal without killing it.

The Guild was organizing dangerous and inconvenient work that did not justify soldiers and did not always fit ordinary village labor.

Galahad pinned the verified request to the F-rank section.

”There.”

Kael looked toward the board.

”You know someone is going to complain that roof repair is not adventuring.”

”They can remain unemployed.”

Kael laughed.

The System produced the day summary.

[Blackwood Adventurers’ Guild — Day 6 Summary]

Registered Adventurers: 46

Confirmed Rank Placements:

F-Rank: 18

E-Rank: 11

D-Rank: 1

C-Rank and Above: 0

Active Contracts: 12

Completed Contracts: 10

Properly Withdrawn: 1

Formal Disciplinary Cases: 1

Credential Security Incidents: 1

Guild Relief Reserve: ACTIVE

Material Brokerage: Initiated

Serious Incidents: 0

Operational Status: Stable

House Intervention Required: NO

Kael read the last two lines.

Stable.

No intervention.

Another ordinary day.

Galahad looked toward him. ”How was the departure?”

Kael glanced at him.

”Quiet.”

”Good?”

”I think so.”

Galahad nodded.

He did not force more out of him.

Kael appreciated that.

Across the hall, Nalia finished locking the reward deposits into the secure box while Mira closed the main registry ledger. The Commons staff cleared plates from several empty tables. One F-rank adventurer stood before the Quest Board trying to decide whether roof repair counted as beneath him.

Another F-rank walked up.

”I’ll do it.”

The first looked offended.

”You don’t even know the reward.”

”I know roofs.”

He took the posting to Nalia.

Kael smiled.

Skills.

Not just swords.

The Population & Labor Analysis had taught him the same lesson outside the Guild.

Blackwood had farmers who could teach masonry.

Women who could read and perhaps teach children.

Retired soldiers who could improve village watches.

Former medical assistants whose old knowledge might become useful again.

And adventurers who apparently knew how to repair roofs.

A territory became stronger when it learned what its people could actually do.

Not what their titles implied.

Kael left the Guild as darkness settled.

For the first time in days, the System did not display a countdown to Damien’s departure.

Instead:

[House Development Overview]

Population & Labor Analysis: ACTIVE

Controlled Settlement Pilot: 3 / 10 households

Permanent placements initiated: 2

Blackwood Adventurers’ Guild: Operational — Day 6 complete

Guild Relief Reserve: Active

Stonebrook Housing Expansion: Active

Bellhaven Road Monitoring: Active

Oakridge School Assessment: Active

Damien Ravenmoor: Frontier evaluation — In transit

Kael looked at the final line for several seconds.

Then he dismissed it.

The road had taken Damien beyond Blackwood.

Tomorrow the Guild would open again.

Stonebrook would continue building.

Bellhaven would test its repaired drainage the next time rain came.

A retired teacher would eventually arrive in Oakridge and probably insult everyone.

Rellan’s caravan would still be somewhere on the western road doing the ordinary work of keeping merchants alive and wagons moving.

Blackwood had lost no momentum because one of its people left.

That did not make Damien less important.

It meant the territory they had built together was becoming strong enough to keep moving until he came home.
