The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

The missing-party board remained untouched through the night.

Galahad had ordered it left exactly as it was.

Rellan Dorr’s name remained at the top, written beside the names of the two adventurers who had departed with him three days earlier. Beneath them sat the original contract, their departure time, the route they had been assigned, the estimated travel duration, and the report that had changed everything.

Seen after first fork.

Did not reach charcoal camp.

Return overdue.

Status: Missing.

A smaller line had been added beneath it.

Search Classification: C-Rank.

That single letter had changed the atmosphere inside Blackwood’s Adventure Guild more than Galahad expected.

The building was still functioning.

That was important.

Quest clerks continued taking requests. F-rank adventurers still argued over gathering assignments. Two E-rank parties left shortly after sunrise for routine work east of Blackwood, and Teren Vos was currently standing near the equipment counter trying to convince another adventurer that carrying three knives did not make him three times more prepared.

But people kept looking toward the missing-party board.

Every few minutes, someone found an excuse to walk past it.

Nobody touched it.

Galahad stood behind the main counter with both hands braced against the wood.

He had slept very little.

Kael noticed immediately.

”You look terrible.”

Galahad looked up.

”Thank you, Your Highness.”

”You’re welcome.”

”You look tired too.”

”I didn’t ask.”

”That seems unfair.”

Kael stepped beside the board.

Morning light entered through the Guild’s front windows, catching the edges of the pinned notices.

Rellan Dorr.

First adventurer to earn D-rank through Blackwood’s Guild.

Not because he was the strongest person registered.

Because he had repeatedly demonstrated that he could finish assignments without making unnecessary problems for everyone around him.

Now he had failed to return.

Kael disliked the thought more each time he looked at the board.

”Anything overnight?”

”No.”

”No traveler sightings?”

”None.”

”Charcoal camp?”

”Same answer.”

Galahad tapped a small route map.

”They expected Rellan’s group before sunset on the first day. When they didn’t arrive, the workers assumed the party had stopped to investigate something along the route.”

”That wasn’t unusual?”

”For a D-rank investigation? Not necessarily.”

Kael nodded.

The original mission had not been complicated.

Unusual animal activity had been reported along a northwest route used by charcoal workers and woodcutters. Tracks had appeared near the road. Two pack animals had spooked badly enough that one injured itself. Someone reported seeing a large winged shape above the trees near dusk, although Galahad had treated that report cautiously.

The Guild had classified the initial investigation as D-rank.

Go out.

Follow the route.

Determine whether there was an actual threat.

Report back.

Rellan’s party had been qualified for that.

The mission had only become C-rank after they disappeared.

Derrick Sorn stood several paces away.

He had been pretending to examine the quest board for nearly ten minutes.

Kael looked at him.

”You can stop pretending.”

Derrick turned.

”I wasn’t pretending.”

”You’ve read the same F-rank herb request four times.”

Derrick looked at the paper.

”Maybe I’m interested in herbs.”

Galahad snorted.

”You’re not.”

Derrick abandoned the excuse.

”Let me go.”

”No.”

The answer came from Galahad immediately.

Derrick’s jaw tightened.

”You already said that yesterday.”

”And I remain correct today.”

”I’m D-rank.”

”So was Rellan.”

That silenced him.

Not completely.

Derrick looked toward the missing board.

”That’s exactly why I should go. I know how he thinks.”

”You’ve taken two jobs with him.”

”Three.”

”Congratulations.”

Derrick stepped closer.

”If we wait for a C-rank adventurer Blackwood doesn’t have, they could be dead before anybody looks.”

Kael watched Galahad.

The Guild leader did not become angry.

That would have been easier.

Instead, he looked tired.

”I know.”

Derrick hesitated.

Galahad continued.

”That is why House Kael is assisting with reconnaissance.”

Derrick looked toward Kael.

”Black Dragon?”

”Limited reconnaissance,” Kael said. ”Not a replacement C-rank mission.”

”What’s the difference if they’re going into the same woods?”

”The difference is what they’re being ordered to do.”

Kael pointed toward the route map.

”Confirm the last safe point. Confirm where Rellan’s party was last seen. Determine whether there is evidence immediately along the assigned route.”

”And if they find something?”

”They report it.”

Derrick stared.

”They don’t follow?”

”Not unless someone is in immediate danger directly in front of them.”

Derrick clearly disliked that.

Kael understood.

He disliked it too.

But this was exactly why Galahad had created ranks in the first place.

If the Guild abandoned them the first time fear became personal, the entire structure meant nothing.

”You built the rank system because people need to know when a job is beyond them,” Kael said.

Derrick looked at him.

”I know.”

”Then don’t ask Galahad to destroy it because the missing man is someone you know.”

Derrick’s face hardened.

For a moment, Kael thought he might argue.

Instead, Derrick looked back toward Rellan’s name.

”What am I supposed to do?”

Galahad answered.

”Work.”

Derrick turned.

”What?”

”Take an assignment you are qualified for.”

”You expect me to go collect wolf pelts while Rellan is missing?”

”No. I expect you to remember there are sixty-eight other registered adventurers watching what happens right now.”

The room had become quieter.

Galahad lowered his voice.

”If I let every frightened D-rank run into a C-rank search because they feel responsible for one another, I haven’t built a Guild. I’ve built a place where people wait until emotion gives them permission to ignore procedure.”

Derrick said nothing.

Galahad continued.

”Rellan followed the rules.”

That mattered.

Kael saw it land.

”If he’s alive,” Galahad said, ”I’m not honoring him by getting another party lost.”

Derrick’s shoulders lowered slightly.

”What assignment?”

Galahad pointed toward a notice farther down the board.

”Escort. Two wagons. Eastern market road. E-rank minimum.”

Derrick stared.

”That’s insulting.”

”You wanted work.”

”I’m D-rank.”

”Then it should be easy.”

Teren Vos laughed from across the hall.

Derrick turned.

”Say something.”

Teren immediately looked at the ceiling.

”I support Guild procedure.”

”You were laughing.”

”I laugh procedurally.”

Even Galahad smiled at that.

The tension loosened just enough.

Derrick ripped the escort notice from the board.

”I’m taking this.”

”Clerk first.”

Derrick froze.

Galahad raised an eyebrow.

Derrick walked toward the registration desk.

Teren wisely stopped laughing.

Kael looked back at the missing-party board.

That was one problem contained.

Not solved.

Contained.

The Guild remained functional.

That mattered more than making everyone feel better for an hour.

The front doors opened.

Iris Hollow entered first.

She wore dark traveling leathers beneath a light Black Dragon cloak, her bow unstrung across her back for the moment. Her usual expression gave very little away.

Sir Elias Thorn followed.

Kael had not chosen him because Elias was the strongest Black Dragon available.

He had chosen him because Elias understood restraint.

The Knight Examination had already taught him that strength alone did not win every situation. Since returning to Blackwood, Elias had become quieter about that lesson rather than less aware of it.

Today, that was useful.

Neither of them looked dressed for a battle.

That was intentional.

Iris placed a small pack on the counter.

”Route copy.”

Galahad handed it over.

”You know the limit?”

Iris looked at him.

”I heard Darius explain it three times.”

Kael raised an eyebrow.

”Only three?”

”He assumed I understood by the second.”

Sir Elias smiled faintly.

Galahad pointed toward the map.

”First fork here. Charcoal camp here. Rellan’s group was seen by a wood hauler after taking the northwest branch.”

Iris studied the lines.

”Time?”

”Late morning.”

”Weather?”

”Clear until evening. Light rain overnight.”

”Animals?”

”One rider claims his horse refused the western shoulder near the second marker.”

”Reliable?”

Galahad hesitated.

”Unknown.”

Iris nodded.

No drama.

No immediate conclusion.

Just another piece of information.

Sir Elias looked toward Kael.

”We stop at the charcoal camp?”

”You stop when the assignment stops.”

Elias nodded.

”Last safe point.”

”Exactly.”

Galahad added, ”If you find direct evidence that Rellan’s party left the route, mark it. Do not turn a reconnaissance into a pursuit.”

Iris rolled the map.

”And if we find bodies?”

The Guild became silent.

Galahad answered anyway.

”Confirm identity if possible. Do not move them unless necessary.”

”And survivors?”

”Bring them back if extraction is immediately possible.”

Iris looked toward Elias.

He nodded.

Kael appreciated that neither of them offered false confidence.

No promises that Rellan would be alive.

No declaration that they would find everyone before dark.

They understood what the assignment was.

Iris picked up her pack.

”Then we should leave.”

Kael stopped her.

”One thing.”

She turned.

”If you see something you cannot classify?”

”Come back.”

”Good.”

Iris’s expression barely changed.

”You expected me to argue?”

”Milo has damaged my expectations.”

Sir Elias laughed.

”He has that effect.”

They left shortly afterward.

Kael did not follow them.

That was harder than he expected.

Part of him wanted to.

He had approved the Guild.

He had pushed it from idea into operation.

The missing adventurers had registered under an institution bearing House Kael’s sanction.

It was easy to turn that into an excuse to personally involve himself in everything.

Kael refused.

If the Adventure Guild required its founder standing beside every dangerous mission, it was not an institution.

It was another extension of him.

So he stayed.

Galahad stayed too.

And the Guild continued working.

By midday, the escort assignment Derrick had angrily accepted left through the eastern gate with two merchants and three adventurers.

Teren took an E-rank livestock investigation with a small party.

Six new F-rank requests were posted.

One failed completion came back from a gathering mission because the assigned adventurer had wandered outside the marked collection area and returned with the wrong plant.

Galahad failed him.

The young man protested.

”But I brought something back.”

”Something poisonous.”

”I didn’t eat it.”

”That is not the standard.”

The adventurer looked toward Kael as though hoping Imperial intervention might save him.

Kael looked away.

The Guild handled its own failures.

Good.

Hours passed.

No word from Iris.

Kael returned to Blackwood Manor briefly, reviewed the latest settlement reports, signed an approval for replacement rope at Oakridge, and checked the eastern cellar.

The dragon egg remained exactly where it had been.

Warm.

Stable heartbeat.

No visible shell change.

Minimal development.

Kael stayed only long enough to confirm that nothing had changed.

Then he left it alone.

By late afternoon, he returned to the Guild.

Galahad was still behind the counter.

”You haven’t moved.”

”I moved twice.”

”To eat?”

”No.”

Kael stared at him.

Galahad sighed.

”I had bread.”

”That doesn’t count.”

”According to Lily?”

”According to anyone with standards.”

Galahad looked toward the door.

”They should have reached the charcoal camp hours ago.”

”Which doesn’t mean they should already be back.”

”I know.”

Kael leaned against the counter.

The waiting was worse because there was nothing useful to do with it.

A missing party did not become less missing because the Guild leader paced.

The door opened just before sunset.

Every head in the hall turned.

Iris entered.

Sir Elias followed.

Neither was injured.

Kael felt the room release a breath all at once.

Galahad stepped out from behind the counter.

”Well?”

Iris removed her gloves.

”Charcoal camp is intact.”

”Workers?”

”Six present. They remember Rellan’s party.”

Galahad’s expression sharpened.

”They reached it?”

”No.”

The room went still again.

Iris placed the rolled route map on the counter and opened it.

”They were expected. Never arrived.”

Galahad pointed toward the first fork.

”Last sighting remains here?”

”No.”

Iris moved her finger farther along the route.

”We pushed the last safe point forward.”

Kael stepped closer.

”How?”

”A charcoal worker came down the route that morning to repair one of their boundary markers.”

She pointed toward a bend roughly halfway between the first fork and the camp.

”He saw three adventurers there.”

”Rellan?”

”Description matches. One man with his shield strapped high, one carrying a spear, one lighter pack.”

Galahad nodded slowly.

”That’s them.”

”Time?”

”Near midday.”

Sir Elias took over.

”The worker spoke with them briefly. They asked whether unusual animals had been seen farther north.”

”What did he say?”

”No.”

Elias pointed toward another mark.

”He warned them the old west trail was no longer maintained.”

Kael looked at Iris.

”They asked about the west trail?”

”Yes.”

Galahad’s jaw tightened.

”Why?”

”That is where it becomes interesting.”

Iris reached into her pack.

She placed a small wooden object on the counter.

A trail marker.

Or part of one.

The lower end had been broken.

The upper face carried a carved Guild route symbol.

Galahad picked it up.

His expression changed immediately.

”That’s ours.”

Kael looked toward him.

”From Rellan’s mission?”

”Guild route markers were placed during the first week of operations.”

Galahad turned the piece over.

”This mark means assigned route continues.”

Iris nodded.

”We found it beside the west trail.”

Silence.

Kael studied the marker.

”Was it supposed to be there?”

”No.”

Galahad answered this time.

”The assigned route continues northwest toward the charcoal camp.”

Iris pointed toward the map.

”The west trail branches here.”

”And someone put a Guild marker there telling adventurers to continue?”

”Yes.”

Galahad’s face hardened.

”Could it have fallen?”

”No.”

Iris’s answer was immediate.

”The original route stake is still present twenty paces north.”

Sir Elias added, ”This one was driven into the ground recently.”

”How recently?”

Iris looked toward him.

”Recent enough that the soil around the placement had not fully settled before the rain.”

Kael looked at the broken lower edge.

”Why is it broken now?”

”I removed it.”

Good.

That part was finished.

No second adventuring party would follow the same false marker tomorrow.

Galahad looked toward the map.

”Tracks?”

Iris nodded.

”Three sets leave the assigned route.”

The hall became completely silent.

”Rellan’s party?”

”Most likely.”

”How far did you follow them?”

”To the first rise.”

Galahad looked up sharply.

Iris met his gaze.

”That is where the reconnaissance stopped.”

Exactly as ordered.

”What did you see?”

Iris was quiet for half a second.

Then:

”The tracks continue west.”

Kael waited.

”There are other tracks with them.”

”How many?”

”Impossible to say reliably after the rain.”

”Human?”

”Some.”

That answer changed the room.

Kael looked toward Elias.

”What else?”

Sir Elias folded his arms.

”Something large passed through the same area.”

”Animal?”

”Probably.”

”Probably?”

Elias looked toward Iris.

She answered.

”Claw impressions.”

Galahad leaned forward.

”Wolf?”

”No.”

”Bear?”

”No.”

Kael felt the first real shift in the investigation.

”What size?”

Iris spread her hand over the map.

”Larger than either.”

Nobody spoke.

Teren Vos had returned at some point and now stood near the back of the hall.

Derrick’s escort party had not yet returned.

Several F-ranks were pretending not to listen.

Galahad noticed them.

”Everyone not involved in this review, clear the counter.”

Nobody moved quickly enough.

Galahad looked up.

”Now.”

The hall suddenly remembered its other business.

People scattered.

Kael, Galahad, Iris, and Elias remained over the route map.

”Blood?” Galahad asked.

”None at the marker.”

”Dropped equipment?”

”No.”

”Signs of struggle?”

”Not until the rise.”

Galahad’s gaze sharpened.

Iris continued.

”Broken brush. One deep impact in the ground. Something scraped bark from a tree roughly this high.”

She raised her hand above her head.

Kael frowned.

”Weapon?”

”Could be.”

”Claw?”

”Could be.”

”Body?”

”No.”

”Blood?”

”A small amount.”

That was worse.

Not because it proved anyone was dead.

Because it proved the party had reached a point where something happened.

Galahad looked toward the C-rank classification already written on the board.

The mission had not become safer.

If anything, the reconnaissance had justified the rank.

Kael looked toward Iris.

”You marked the point?”

”Yes.”

”And removed the false route marker?”

”Yes.”

”Anything else that needs doing before tomorrow?”

”No.”

A completed reconnaissance.

They had established the last confirmed sighting.

Found the route diversion.

Removed the misleading marker.

Confirmed Rellan’s party likely followed it.

And identified evidence of an encounter beyond the first rise.

The question had changed.

They were no longer searching an entire northwest road wondering where three people had vanished.

Now they knew where the disappearance began.

Galahad exhaled slowly.

”The west trail.”

Iris nodded.

”Next phase starts there.”

Kael looked toward the missing-party board.

Not tonight.

The Guild had spent the day waiting for information.

Now it had information.

That deserved to be organized before anyone charged into the forest.

”Close the northwest route,” Kael said.

Galahad nodded immediately.

”All Guild traffic?”

”Until we know whether that false marker was meant for Rellan specifically or any adventurer using the road.”

Galahad moved toward the board.

He removed every active quest using the northwest route.

Not many.

Three.

One F-rank gathering contract.

One E-rank hunting request.

One delivery.

Each was marked:

SUSPENDED — ROUTE SAFETY REVIEW

That was another immediate action completed.

No one else would wander into the same area because the Guild had left ordinary missions active while investigating a disappearance.

Teren watched from a distance.

”What happens to the clients?”

Galahad looked toward him.

”We contact them.”

”They’ll complain.”

”They can.”

Teren nodded.

”Fair.”

Galahad turned toward the registration clerk.

”No new northwest assignments.”

The clerk marked the route closed.

Kael looked toward Iris again.

”You’re done for today.”

She blinked.

”I can brief Darius.”

”After you eat.”

Sir Elias nodded solemnly.

”A wise ruling.”

Iris looked at him.

”You ate half my travel bread.”

”That was operational necessity.”

”That was theft.”

Kael left them to argue.

Galahad remained beside the board.

The Guild leader removed the old notation beneath Rellan’s name.

LAST CONFIRMED: AFTER FIRST FORK

He replaced it carefully.

LAST CONFIRMED: WEST-TRAIL JUNCTION, NEAR MIDDAY

Then another line.

FALSE GUILD MARKER RECOVERED

PARTY TRACKS CONTINUE WEST

EVIDENCE OF ENCOUNTER BEYOND FIRST RISE

C-RANK SEARCH REMAINS ACTIVE

Galahad stepped back.

Kael stood beside him.

”We moved forward.”

”Not enough.”

”No.”

Galahad stared at Rellan’s name.

”But forward.”

That was enough for one day.

Tomorrow, they would decide who was qualified to go beyond the first rise.

Because the next phase was no longer a search along a road.

Something had drawn Rellan Dorr and his party off their assigned route.

And something had been waiting for them in the trees.
