The false trail marker sat on Galahad’s desk.

Someone had cleaned most of the mud from it, but not enough to disturb the lower edge where Iris had pulled it from the earth. The Guild symbol remained clearly visible across the front.

Assigned route continues.

It was a simple mark.

That was what made it dangerous.

An adventurer moving quickly through unfamiliar woodland would see it, recognize the Guild’s route language, and have little reason to stop.

Rellan Dorr had trusted it.

So had the two adventurers traveling with him.

Now all three were missing.

Galahad stood behind the desk staring at the marker while Kael, Sir Darius Valen, Iris Hollow, and Sir Elias Thorn occupied the room around him.

Morning had barely begun.

The Guild hall outside was already open.

That had been Galahad’s decision.

The northwest route remained closed, but the rest of the Guild would function normally.

No dramatic shutdown.

No announcement that something terrible had been discovered in the forest.

Not yet.

Kael looked toward the marker.

”Could one of our people have placed it by mistake?”

Galahad shook his head.

”I checked before sunrise.”

”With everyone who marked the original routes?”

”Yes.”

”And?”

”No one placed a marker on the west trail.”

Iris leaned against the wall.

”The actual marker was still where it belonged.”

Darius looked toward her.

”Condition?”

”Undamaged.”

”Placement?”

”Firm.”

”Meaning?”

Iris pushed away from the wall.

”Someone did not move the original marker. They made or acquired another one.”

Silence settled across the room.

That changed the problem.

A missing marker could be an accident.

A misplaced marker could be incompetence.

A second marker deliberately driven into an abandoned trail was something else.

Kael looked toward Galahad.

”How difficult is that symbol to copy?”

”Not difficult.”

Galahad picked up the marker.

”The route marks are deliberately simple. Adventurers have to recognize them quickly.”

”So anyone who saw one could reproduce it.”

”Yes.”

”Do you issue the stakes from here?”

”We did during route preparation.”

”Counted?”

Galahad paused.

Then nodded toward a ledger.

”Every one.”

Kael already understood from his expression.

”You checked.”

”All accounted for except the one Iris brought back.”

Darius’s eyes narrowed.

”Then this was not stolen from Guild stores.”

”Probably not.”

Galahad set it down.

”Someone made it.”

Kael stared at the carved symbol.

That meant preparation.

Someone had known the Guild operated northwest.

Known what its markers looked like.

Known adventurers would trust them.

Perhaps known Rellan’s party specifically was coming.

Perhaps not.

Kael refused to decide that part yet.

”What do we know for certain?”

Galahad opened his ledger.

”Rellan’s party departed on a legitimate D-rank investigation.”

He tapped the first line.

”They followed the correct northwest route at least as far as the charcoal worker’s sighting.”

Another.

”They asked about animal activity and the old west trail.”

Another.

”A false Guild marker directed travelers onto that trail.”

He looked toward Iris.

”Three sets of adventurer tracks left the assigned road.”

Iris nodded.

”Likely Rellan’s party.”

”Beyond the first rise,” Galahad continued, ”there are signs of an encounter, a small amount of blood, broken brush, and tracks from something large.”

Kael looked toward Darius.

”And nothing proving what happened afterward.”

”Correct.”

Darius had barely spoken since entering.

That usually meant he was thinking about violence more seriously than everyone else.

Kael knew the expression by now.

”You don’t like it.”

Darius looked toward him.

”I dislike traps.”

”That is generally their purpose.”

”I dislike traps designed for people who do not know they are entering one.”

Kael waited.

Darius continued.

”If the false marker was meant to divert adventurers, then the missing party may not have encountered the threat accidentally.”

Galahad nodded.

”That is my concern.”

Kael looked between them.

”So today’s objective?”

Galahad answered immediately.

”C-rank search.”

That part had not changed.

The Guild still had no C-rank adventurer.

Kael glanced toward the hall beyond the closed office door.

”Then who goes?”

”I do.”

The answer came so calmly that Kael initially thought he had misheard.

He looked back at Galahad.

”You?”

”Yes.”

”You run the Guild.”

”I am aware.”

Darius’s expression did not change.

Kael’s did.

”You haven’t taken a Guild assignment since opening.”

”No.”

”Because?”

”Because my job is here.”

”Then why leave now?”

Galahad folded his arms.

”Because before I ran this Guild, I survived work harder than a C-rank search.”

Kael remembered.

Galahad Charney had not become Guild leader because he was good at paperwork.

Thirty-six years old.

Former mercenary.

B-rank.

Experienced enough to understand what adventurers faced outside the walls because he had spent years doing exactly that.

Galahad continued.

”I refused Derrick because he is D-rank.”

”As you should.”

”And I will continue refusing D-ranks.”

He tapped the C-rank classification.

”But the Guild does have someone qualified to lead this search.”

”You.”

”Yes.”

Kael looked toward Darius.

The Shield finally spoke.

”He has the experience.”

”You sound too comfortable with this.”

”I did not say I was comfortable.”

Kael looked back at Galahad.

”Who runs the Guild while you’re gone?”

”The senior clerk handles routine intake. No promotion reviews. No unusual classifications. Any mission requiring my authorization waits.”

”Emergency?”

”Send to House Kael.”

Kael frowned.

Galahad shrugged.

”You sanctioned the Guild.”

”That does not mean I know how to run it.”

”No.”

Galahad’s mouth moved slightly.

”It means you know where to find me if I survive.”

Kael stared at him.

”Very reassuring.”

Iris spoke from the wall.

”I’m going.”

Darius turned.

”You went yesterday.”

”And I know the terrain.”

Sir Elias nodded.

”So do I.”

Darius looked toward him too.

”I did not ask for volunteers.”

Elias smiled faintly.

”That has rarely prevented them.”

Kael folded his arms.

”Three people?”

Galahad considered.

”Enough.”

”Galahad.”

”Too many people destroy tracks.”

He pointed toward the map.

”This is still a search. Not an assault.”

Darius stepped toward the table.

”Iris goes.”

No one seemed surprised.

”She tracks,” Darius continued. ”Galahad leads the Guild investigation.”

Then he looked toward Elias.

”You remain.”

Elias’s smile disappeared.

”Commander—”

”You performed yesterday’s reconnaissance. You are not required for the next phase.”

”I’m capable.”

”Yes.”

Darius looked directly at him.

”That is not the same as necessary.”

Elias held his gaze.

Kael watched the exchange carefully.

The old version of Elias might have argued harder simply because being left behind felt like a judgment.

This Elias eventually nodded.

”Understood.”

Darius turned toward Kael.

”And you remain.”

Kael raised an eyebrow.

”I didn’t volunteer.”

”You were about to.”

”I was considering it.”

”You remain.”

Galahad looked between them.

”I agree.”

Kael stared.

”Wonderful.”

Iris added, ”So do I.”

”Excellent. Anyone else?”

Elias raised a hand.

Kael pointed toward him.

”Don’t.”

The room relaxed slightly.

Then Darius did something Kael had not expected.

”I go.”

Kael looked at him.

Galahad’s expression changed.

”Sir Darius—”

”You need a third person.”

”You just said fewer is better.”

”Three is fewer than four.”

Iris looked suspiciously amused.

Kael narrowed his eyes.

”You just removed Elias so you could go yourself.”

”Yes.”

”At least pretend to be subtle.”

”No.”

Galahad considered the legendary Shield standing across from him.

”You understand this is my search.”

Darius looked at him.

”Yes.”

”You do not take command because you outrank everyone in every military room you enter.”

”This is not a military room.”

Galahad waited.

Darius nodded once.

”You lead.”

That mattered.

Kael saw Galahad recognize it too.

The Adventure Guild remained civilian.

House soldiers could assist.

They did not automatically take over.

”Fine,” Galahad said. ”Iris tracks. Darius protects the search if whatever made those prints returns.”

Kael looked at Darius.

”And you do not turn a C-rank investigation into a demonstration.”

Darius’s expression remained perfectly serious.

”I have no idea what you mean.”

Iris looked toward Kael.

”He knows exactly what you mean.”

”I know.”

Galahad rolled the route map.

”Then we leave now.”

Before he reached the door, Kael stopped him.

”Bring them back.”

Galahad looked over his shoulder.

”If we can.”

It was not the answer Kael wanted.

It was the correct one.

”Then find out what happened.”

Galahad nodded.

”That I can promise.”

They left ten minutes later.

Kael stayed behind.

Again.

He disliked it more today.

Yesterday, staying had proven the Guild could function without him following every search party into the woods.

Today, staying felt different.

Galahad himself had gone.

Darius had gone.

Iris had gone.

Three of the most capable people currently in Blackwood were walking into the place where Rellan Dorr had disappeared.

Kael could have justified joining them easily.

His sword.

His magic.

His responsibility.

His curiosity.

All true.

None made him necessary.

So he remained.

And worked.

The Guild’s morning review still happened.

Three completed missions were processed.

One E-rank party requested credit for bringing back more monster parts than their contract required. The clerk rejected the additional reward because the Guild had never authorized the extra hunting.

Two clients complained about the northwest route closure.

One left angry.

The other accepted a delay.

Teren Vos returned from his livestock investigation with mud covering half his trousers and an expression suggesting the livestock had won.

Kael looked at him.

”What happened?”

Teren dropped a small quest pouch onto the counter.

”Goat.”

”That explains nothing.”

”It explains everything if you’ve met the goat.”

The clerk tried not to laugh.

Teren pointed toward the missing-party board.

”Anything?”

”Search underway.”

”Who?”

”Galahad.”

Teren stopped smiling.

”He went himself?”

”Yes.”

Teren looked toward the office.

Then back at the board.

”That bad?”

Kael considered the answer.

”Serious enough that he decided rank rules should apply to him too.”

Teren nodded slowly.

He seemed to understand.

The Guild continued.

That was becoming the point.

One missing party could not be allowed to turn seventy other adventurers into spectators.

By midday, Derrick returned from his eastern escort assignment.

He entered the hall visibly annoyed, dusty, and carrying a signed completion sheet.

Galahad was not there to receive it.

The clerk did.

Derrick handed over the paper.

”Both wagons delivered. No losses.”

The clerk examined the merchant signatures.

”Delay?”

”One wheel repair.”

”Combat?”

”No.”

”Client complaint?”

Derrick looked offended.

”No.”

The clerk marked the contract complete.

”Payment after verification.”

Derrick stared.

”You’re making me wait?”

”That is procedure.”

Derrick opened his mouth.

Then looked toward the missing board.

He closed it again.

”Fine.”

Kael noticed.

That was progress of another kind.

Derrick had finished the assignment Galahad gave him instead of abandoning it halfway through to chase Rellan.

One job complete.

Then he walked toward Kael.

”Galahad?”

”Search.”

Derrick’s expression tightened.

”With who?”

”Iris and Darius.”

That stopped him.

”Darius?”

”Yes.”

Derrick looked toward the closed northwest route notice.

”What did they find yesterday?”

Kael told him only what the Guild had already made available to registered adventurers.

False marker.

Tracks west.

Evidence of an encounter.

Nothing more.

Derrick listened without interrupting.

When Kael finished, he looked toward Rellan’s name.

”Someone did that intentionally.”

”Someone placed the marker intentionally.”

”That’s what I meant.”

”No.”

Derrick looked at him.

Kael continued.

”We know someone placed a false marker. We do not know whether they knew Rellan would follow it.”

Derrick’s jaw tightened.

”That distinction matters to you?”

”Yes.”

”Why?”

”Because if we decide what happened before we investigate it, we’ll start making every piece of evidence fit the answer we already chose.”

Derrick looked away.

He did not like it.

He also did not argue.

”Can I help?”

Kael pointed toward the counter.

”You completed your escort?”

”Yes.”

”Then help the clerk contact the three clients whose northwest contracts were suspended.”

Derrick stared.

”That’s your answer?”

”You know the roads better than most of the new F-ranks. Explain why the Guild closed the route without turning it into tavern gossip.”

Derrick sighed.

Then walked toward the counter.

Kael smiled faintly.

Contained.

Useful.

Not everyone needed to be in the forest.

The hours passed.

At the northwest trail, the world was much quieter.

Iris found the first rise exactly as she had left it.

The small bloodstain remained beneath the tree root, darkened by time.

Darius stood several paces away scanning the forest.

Galahad crouched beside the disturbed ground.

”This is where you stopped?”

”Yes.”

Iris pointed.

”Rellan’s party comes from east.”

Her finger followed three partial impressions.

”They reach here.”

Then farther west.

”Something else approaches.”

Galahad looked toward the larger marks.

The rain had damaged them badly.

Still, enough remained to show depth.

Weight.

Claws.

Darius crouched.

”How large?”

Iris shook her head.

”Not enough print left.”

”Four-legged?”

”Probably.”

”Winged?”

”No track tells me that.”

Galahad looked toward the damaged bark Iris had reported.

A long scrape marked one tree above shoulder height.

He touched nothing.

”Could be a weapon.”

”Yes.”

”Could be a claw.”

”Yes.”

Galahad looked toward her.

”You enjoy uncertainty.”

”I enjoy not lying.”

Darius’s mouth moved slightly.

They continued west.

Slowly.

The tracks became harder to follow after the rise.

Not because they disappeared naturally.

Because the ground changed.

Stone.

Dry roots.

Old leaf cover.

Whoever had led Rellan onto this trail had chosen terrain that did not preserve footsteps well.

Galahad stopped beside another tree.

”Marker.”

Iris saw it a moment later.

Another wooden stake.

This one did not carry the Guild symbol.

It carried a simple white slash.

Darius looked toward Galahad.

”Yours?”

”No.”

”Local?”

Iris shook her head.

”Not charcoal workers.”

Galahad crouched.

”Fresh?”

”Recent enough.”

He did not remove it.

Not yet.

”Mark the location.”

Iris did.

They moved again.

The white slash appeared twice more.

Far enough apart to guide someone deeper west.

Galahad’s expression hardened.

”This is a route.”

”Yes,” Iris said.

”Made by?”

”No idea.”

The forest thickened.

The old logging trail narrowed until it became little more than a corridor between black stone outcroppings.

Then Iris stopped.

Her fist rose.

Both men froze.

She crouched.

Something lay beneath a fern.

Leather.

Galahad moved closer.

A pack.

One strap torn.

Mud across the lower half.

The Guild registration mark burned into the flap.

Galahad already knew before he opened it.

”Rellan.”

Iris nodded.

Inside remained half a day’s dried food.

Rope.

A small whetstone.

One empty waterskin.

No coin pouch.

No journal.

Galahad searched carefully.

Then found blood along the torn strap.

Not much.

Darius looked toward the ground around it.

”Dropped during struggle?”

”Maybe.”

Iris moved several paces west.

Then stopped again.

”Spear.”

A broken shaft rested between two roots.

Galahad recognized the wrapping.

One of Rellan’s companions carried a spear.

The upper third was gone.

Not cut cleanly.

Snapped.

Darius picked up neither item.

His expression had changed.

”Something hit this.”

Galahad looked toward him.

”You can tell?”

”Wood fibers.”

He pointed.

”Bent before breaking.”

Iris examined it.

”Impact from side?”

”Yes.”

They searched the area for blood.

More this time.

Still not enough to prove a death.

Then Galahad found the first sign that changed the entire search.

A boot.

Empty.

He stared at it.

Iris approached.

”Rellan?”

”No.”

Galahad turned it over.

Smaller.

”One of the others.”

Darius looked farther into the trees.

”Tracks?”

Iris searched.

Ten minutes.

Then twenty.

She returned to the boot.

”Nothing I trust.”

Galahad’s jaw tightened.

A missing pack.

Broken spear.

Blood.

A boot.

And no bodies.

No clear retreat.

No obvious drag marks.

No trail west that three injured people should have been able to hide.

Darius looked upward.

The canopy was dense.

”Could something have carried them?”

Iris looked toward the large claw impressions from the rise.

”One person?”

”Three?”

She shook her head.

”Not without more evidence.”

Galahad exhaled slowly.

”Search radius.”

Iris looked at him.

”How far?”

”Quarter mile.”

Darius frowned.

”That will take time.”

”We have daylight.”

”And if the trail continues?”

”We do not follow indefinitely.”

Darius nodded once.

Galahad had expected resistance.

He received none.

The search expanded.

They found more markers.

White slashes.

Always west.

They found one place where branches had been broken high above the ground.

Another where something heavy landed or struck hard enough to disturb old leaves across several paces.

Iris stood over the depression.

Her face had become more serious.

Darius noticed.

”What?”

”I saw something like this yesterday.”

”Where?”

”Near the first rise.”

Galahad looked between them.

”Same size?”

”Close.”

Darius crouched.

”Wing impact?”

Iris shook her head.

”Could be.”

”Could be something jumping.”

”Yes.”

Galahad looked at the white route marks.

The entire search was beginning to feel wrong.

Not simply dangerous.

Designed.

A false Guild marker brought Rellan’s party off the legitimate road.

Then unfamiliar marks guided travelers farther west.

At some point, something large encountered them.

Their equipment was scattered.

Their bodies were absent.

Galahad stood.

”That is enough.”

Darius looked toward him.

”We have not found them.”

”No.”

Galahad’s expression remained hard.

”But we have answered the C-rank question.”

Iris understood first.

”This is beyond a missing-party search.”

”Yes.”

Darius stood.

”What classification?”

Galahad looked around the silent forest.

”Not yet.”

He pointed toward the recovered equipment.

”We bring evidence back.”

He looked toward the white marker.

”Take one.”

Iris carefully removed the nearest stake after marking its location.

Galahad picked up Rellan’s pack.

Darius took the broken spear.

The empty boot went into Iris’s pack.

Three pieces of evidence.

One route marker.

One completed search radius.

No missing adventurers.

That failure mattered.

But so did knowing when continuing became reckless.

As they started back east, Darius stopped.

Galahad noticed.

”What?”

The Shield looked toward the trees.

Nothing moved.

”Thought I heard something.”

Iris listened.

Wind.

Leaves.

Farther away, a bird.

Then silence.

Galahad waited.

Darius finally turned.

”Nothing.”

They continued.

None of them saw the shadow move across the canopy behind them.

By late afternoon, Blackwood’s Guild had become quieter again.

Kael was at the counter reviewing two suspended-client complaints when the front door opened.

Iris entered first.

Galahad followed.

Darius came last.

Kael saw the pack in Galahad’s hand.

Then the broken spear.

His stomach tightened.

”No bodies?”

Galahad shook his head.

”No survivors?”

”No.”

Derrick had been helping the clerk.

He froze.

Galahad looked toward him.

”Office.”

Derrick’s jaw tightened.

”I’m registered—”

”Office, Derrick.”

Something in Galahad’s voice stopped the argument.

Kael, Galahad, Darius, Iris, and Derrick entered.

Galahad placed the recovered equipment on the table.

Derrick recognized the pack immediately.

”That’s Rellan’s.”

”Yes.”

The broken spear took longer.

Then Derrick looked away.

Galahad gave the report without embellishment.

Second route markers.

White slashes.

Rellan’s pack.

Broken spear.

Blood.

Boot.

No bodies.

No reliable tracks beyond the search area.

Repeated evidence of something large moving through the same route.

Derrick listened.

His face became harder with each sentence.

When Galahad finished, he asked only one question.

”Are they dead?”

”We don’t know.”

”Do you think they are?”

Galahad did not answer immediately.

”That does not change what I can prove.”

Derrick closed his eyes.

Then nodded.

Kael looked toward the map.

”What did you mean when you said you answered the C-rank question?”

Galahad placed both hands on the table.

”The C-rank search had a purpose.”

”Find Rellan.”

”More specifically: determine whether a qualified team could safely trace the disappearance and extract survivors if found.”

Kael waited.

Galahad looked toward Iris.

”We found evidence of deliberate route manipulation.”

Then Darius.

”Evidence of a creature or threat large enough that none of us are willing to classify it from tracks alone.”

Then the recovered equipment.

”And evidence the missing party was attacked or forced farther west.”

Kael’s expression hardened.

”So?”

”So the search does not remain C-rank.”

Silence.

Derrick looked at him.

”What rank?”

Galahad answered carefully.

”I am not declaring A-rank from one search.”

Kael nodded.

Good.

They were not skipping the middle because the evidence was frightening.

”But I am suspending the C-rank classification.”

Galahad pulled the mission sheet toward him.

C-RANK SEARCH — CLOSED

Beneath it, he wrote:

RESULT: INSUFFICIENT FOR SAFE CONTINUATION

Then:

ESCALATION REVIEW REQUIRED

That phase was finished.

The C-rank investigation had done its job.

It had not rescued Rellan.

It had established that sending another C-rank team farther west would be irresponsible.

Galahad looked toward Kael.

”Northwest route remains closed.”

”Agreed.”

”No adventurers enter that corridor.”

”Agreed.”

”Not Derrick.”

Derrick’s jaw tightened.

Galahad looked directly at him.

”Especially Derrick.”

Derrick stared at Rellan’s pack.

Then nodded once.

”Fine.”

Kael noticed how much that cost him.

”What happens now?” he asked.

Galahad looked toward the Guild board outside.

”We review everything.”

”The false Guild marker.”

”Yes.”

”The white route stakes.”

”Yes.”

”The claw impressions.”

”Yes.”

”Missing party.”

”Yes.”

”Other disappearances?”

Galahad’s gaze sharpened.

”If there are any.”

Kael understood.

They had been treating Rellan’s disappearance as a single incident.

Before increasing the classification again, they needed to know whether it actually was one.

Galahad turned toward the clerk outside.

”Pull every northwest contract since opening.”

The clerk looked through the doorway.

”All of them?”

”Every completed, failed, abandoned, delayed, and disputed mission.”

Kael looked toward him.

”How many?”

”Not many. Three weeks of Guild operation.”

Good.

A task they could actually finish.

”Tonight,” Galahad said.

The clerk nodded.

Derrick looked toward the pack again.

”I’ll help.”

Galahad studied him.

Then nodded.

”Records only.”

The review began before sunset.

No dramatic expedition followed the returning search team.

No one rushed west because Rellan’s pack had been found.

Instead, the Guild closed one phase and started checking whether the missing party was truly the first sign that something was wrong.

And several hours later, beneath a stack of completed northwest contracts, Teren Vos found something that made him stop reading.

He looked at the page.

Then at the date.

Then again.

”Galahad.”

The Guild leader looked up.

Teren held the contract out.

”You need to see this.”

Galahad took it.

A completed E-rank gathering assignment.

Northwest route.

Eleven days earlier.

The adventurers had returned safely.

The client had received the requested materials.

The mission had been closed.

Nothing unusual.

Except for one note the clerk had almost dismissed at the time.

Party reported hearing repeated cries from farther west. Investigation not pursued because sound originated outside assigned route.

Galahad read it twice.

Kael moved beside him.

”That was before Rellan disappeared.”

”Yes.”

”How long before?”

Galahad checked the dates.

”Eight days.”

The room became very quiet.

Rellan Dorr’s party had not been the first adventurers to hear something in the western forest.

They had only been the first ones who followed the trail far enough not to come back.
