The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

By sunrise, the white residue had already become less mysterious than the people using it.

That annoyed Kael more than he expected.

Iris had returned to the Guild before most of the first-floor lamps were extinguished and spread three small samples across a worktable near the rear records room. One had come from the original false Guild marker recovered near Rellan Dorr’s route. The second came from the tree near Derren’s disappearance site. The third had been scraped from the stone marker beyond the first rise.

They looked nearly identical.

That did not mean they were.

Kael had learned that lesson too many times to ignore it now.

He stood beside Iris while she compared the samples beneath a magnifying lens borrowed from Garrick’s workshop. Galahad sat across from them with yesterday’s field report open beside an older map Edwin had found in the manor archives.

Milo Renwick had somehow acquired breakfast.

No one had invited him.

That had not stopped him.

He sat near the end of the table with a bowl in one hand, chewing while watching Iris work.

”Any chance the terrifying secret forest society uses expensive paint?”

Iris did not look up.

”No.”

”Disappointing.”

Kael glanced toward him. ”Why?”

”Then at least they would have standards.”

Galahad rubbed one hand over his face.

”You have been here seven minutes.”

”I am warming up.”

”That is what worries me.”

Sera Venn stood near the window with her arms folded. She had not spoken since arriving, but her attention remained fixed on the samples.

Iris finally straightened.

”Same base.”

Kael leaned forward.

”Certain?”

”Enough to say the three samples were made from the same kind of material.”

”What kind?”

”Ground chalkstone mixed with animal fat.”

Milo lowered his bowl.

”That is much less dramatic than I hoped.”

Iris continued.

”Possibly ash as well.”

”Charcoal ash?”

”Could be.”

Galahad looked toward the map.

”Easy to obtain locally?”

”Yes.”

”Which means it tells us almost nothing about who made it.”

”Correct.”

Kael frowned.

Useful and useless at the same time.

He was beginning to understand why investigators developed unpleasant personalities.

Darius entered a moment later.

Unlike yesterday, he wore armor.

Not full plate.

A reinforced field harness beneath a dark cloak, sword at his hip, additional blade strapped across the pack at his back.

Kael noticed immediately.

”So today is different.”

Darius stopped near the table.

”Yes.”

Galahad nodded toward the armor.

”You agree with the perimeter plan?”

”I agree with not crossing the alarm.”

Milo raised a finger.

”Important distinction.”

Darius looked at him.

Milo lowered it.

Galahad spread out the older map.

Edwin’s archival search had uncovered something the newer territorial maps no longer showed.

A road.

Not a major one.

Barely more than a cart track.

It ran northwest from one of the old charcoal settlements, crossed the first rise, and continued deeper into the western forest before disappearing beneath a faded notation.

Kael leaned over the parchment.

”What does that say?”

Edwin, standing beside him, adjusted the page.

”Old kiln road.”

”How old?”

”The map was copied thirty-four years ago from an earlier survey.”

”And the original?”

”Unknown.”

Galahad traced the route with one finger.

”It matches yesterday’s general direction.”

Iris nodded.

”Close enough.”

Kael looked toward Edwin.

”Why is it missing from modern maps?”

”Likely abandonment.”

”Why?”

Edwin turned to another record.

”There was a decline in charcoal production northwest of the old settlement about twenty years ago.”

”Cause?”

”Repeated kiln failures, transport losses, and labor migration toward the eastern road.”

Kael looked at him.

”Transport losses.”

”Yes.”

”What kind?”

Edwin’s expression tightened slightly.

”The records are poor.”

Of course they were.

Kael waited.

”One entry mentions damaged wagons. Another says animals refused the road. Two references to workers abandoning the western kilns.”

Galahad looked up.

”No monster reports?”

”Nothing explicit.”

”Missing people?”

Edwin shook his head.

”Not in those files.”

Kael looked back at the map.

The old road curved northwest.

The white markers curved northwest.

That did not prove they were the same route.

But it gave the Guild something stronger than guesswork.

Galahad tapped the faded line.

”Today we do not follow it.”

Kael raised an eyebrow.

Milo looked offended on his behalf.

”Then why did we spend the morning becoming emotionally attached to the map?”

”Because we are checking the alarm perimeter.”

Galahad pointed to the location Iris had marked the previous day.

”The route alarm sits here.”

Then he drew a rough circle around it.

”We approach from the south first. If the alarm is part of a larger boundary, we look for another line without crossing the marked path.”

Iris nodded.

”Then north.”

”And east if needed.”

Sera finally spoke.

”West is beyond the line.”

”Yes.”

”No crossing.”

”No crossing.”

Milo looked toward Darius.

”And if something crosses toward us?”

Darius answered.

”Then the rules change.”

That ended the joke.

Kael looked at the team.

Same five as yesterday.

Galahad.

Darius.

Iris.

Sera.

Milo.

Still no Kael.

He disliked it less today.

Not because he wanted to stay behind.

Because he now understood what staying behind was for.

He looked toward Galahad.

”If the perimeter proves deliberate?”

”We reassess.”

”If it proves larger than yesterday suggested?”

”We reassess.”

”If you find evidence the missing people were taken through it?”

Galahad held his gaze.

”We come back.”

Kael nodded.

That was enough.

He did not ask for promises.

By midmorning, the search team had crossed the charcoal camp again.

The foreman did not ask whether they had come to rescue Derren this time.

He had learned something too.

Instead, he pointed west and said, ”No one crossed the boundary.”

Galahad nodded.

”Anyone hear voices?”

”One man thought he heard singing last night.”

Iris stopped.

”Thought?”

”He wasn’t sure.”

”From where?”

”West.”

”Did he follow it?”

”No.”

”Good.”

The foreman hesitated.

”He said it sounded like his mother.”

Milo’s expression lost some of its usual ease.

”Alive?”

The foreman looked at him.

”No.”

No one commented after that.

They entered the forest.

The route to the first rise had already become familiar enough that Iris moved faster than the previous day, though she still checked every important landmark.

White-marked tree.

Thorn with Derren’s cloth.

Stone depression.

Blood.

Large pine.

First rise.

Nothing had changed.

That was useful.

They descended the western slope and reached the marked animal trail.

The white slashes continued north.

The alarm line waited farther ahead.

Galahad stopped well before it.

”South first.”

Iris led them off the route.

The forest became more difficult immediately.

Whatever path someone had maintained through the brush did not extend here.

Branches caught at clothing.

Roots forced slower movement.

Sera watched behind them often enough that Darius finally asked, ”Something?”

”No.”

”Then why keep looking?”

”Because yesterday the voices changed direction.”

Darius nodded once.

Good answer.

They moved south in a wide arc.

No one crossed the alarm’s western line.

Iris kept the known route somewhere to their right, using terrain rather than visible markings to maintain position.

Twenty minutes passed.

Then thirty.

Milo spoke quietly.

”If there is another alarm, I would like everyone to remember I suggested not touching it before Sera tells me.”

Sera did not look at him.

”I remember.”

”That sounded threatening.”

”It was informational.”

Galahad raised one hand.

Everyone stopped.

Iris had crouched near a low branch.

Another rope.

Not identical to the first.

Same general thickness.

Darkened with age.

This one ran lower through the brush and disappeared behind a cluster of shrubs.

Milo stared at it.

”Second line.”

Iris followed without touching.

Twenty feet.

Thirty.

Then she found another covered bell.

Galahad exhaled slowly.

”Same construction?”

”Similar.”

”Recent?”

”Maintained.”

Darius looked toward the west.

”How far from the first?”

Iris checked her notes.

”Approximately two hundred yards south.”

Galahad’s expression hardened.

That was no longer a single improvised warning device.

Someone had built a boundary.

”Mark it,” he said.

Iris did.

They withdrew eastward first, then looped around and returned to the known route without crossing either alarm.

Next came north.

That took longer.

The terrain rose and fell in shallow ridges. A narrow stream forced them farther east before they could continue.

Sera found the third line.

Not Iris.

She stopped so abruptly Milo nearly walked into her.

”Rope.”

Iris moved forward.

Same pattern.

A cord through low branches.

A bell hidden beneath bark-colored cloth.

But this one had something else.

A carved mark.

Not white.

Cut directly into the tree beside the rope.

Three short vertical strokes.

Galahad examined it.

”Meaning?”

Iris shook her head.

”No idea.”

Darius looked at the rope.

”Could identify which line.”

”Possibly.”

Sera scanned westward.

”There.”

Another carved mark sat on a second tree.

Same three strokes.

Milo crouched.

”So whoever uses this knows where they are without touching the alarm.”

Galahad nodded.

”And we don’t.”

The perimeter was becoming more organized with every discovery.

Kael would hate that.

Darius did too.

Iris marked the third line.

”Distance?”

”Roughly three hundred yards north of the first.”

Galahad looked between the positions on her field map.

Three alarm points.

South.

Center.

North.

All east of whatever they guarded.

He did not need a perfect line to understand the implication.

”Boundary extends at least five hundred yards.”

Darius nodded.

”Probably more.”

Galahad looked west.

No white marks were visible from here.

No structures.

No smoke.

No people.

Only trees.

Yet someone had spent time maintaining a warning system deep in abandoned forest.

That mattered more than whether the person was currently watching.

Sera’s head turned.

Everyone noticed.

”What?”

She listened.

Darius heard it seconds later.

A metallic sound.

Soft.

One chime.

Farther north.

Not from the bell beside them.

Another.

Then silence.

Milo whispered.

”That wasn’t us.”

”No,” Iris said.

Galahad looked north.

”Wind?”

Sera shook her head.

”The branches are barely moving.”

Darius’s hand settled on his sword.

A third sound followed.

Another bell.

Farther away.

Then one closer.

Not theirs.

The forest suddenly felt connected in a way it had not before.

Galahad’s expression changed.

”Back.”

No one argued.

They withdrew along their own route.

Slow enough not to create noise.

Fast enough that nobody mistook caution for hesitation.

The bells stopped.

Then the first voice came.

”Milo.”

He did not answer.

”Come back.”

His expression tightened.

Sera looked at him.

He shook his head.

”Not anyone I know.”

The voice changed.

A woman now.

”Iris.”

Then a child.

”Sir Darius.”

Darius continued moving.

The words followed them.

Not constantly.

Enough.

”Galahad.”

Pause.

”Please.”

Pause.

”Help.”

Then:

”Rellan.”

Galahad stopped for half a heartbeat.

Darius caught his shoulder.

”Move.”

Galahad moved.

Another bell sounded west of them.

Then another farther south.

Sera looked toward the treetops.

”They’re signaling.”

Milo whispered.

”To what?”

No one answered.

They reached the known trail.

The first alarm line remained ahead.

Untouched.

Iris stopped before it.

Galahad looked at her.

”What?”

”Tracks.”

Fresh.

Everyone froze.

Boot marks crossed the maintained route from west to east.

Not old.

Not yesterday’s.

Fresh enough that loose soil still held sharp edges.

Darius looked east.

”Toward us?”

”Across our withdrawal path.”

”How many?”

Iris studied them.

”At least two.”

”Human?”

”Boots.”

”Size?”

”Adult.”

Galahad looked toward the trees.

They had not seen anyone.

That did not mean nobody had seen them.

Milo’s voice lost all humor.

”They crossed after we came in.”

Iris nodded.

”Likely.”

Sera raised her bow.

”Where did they go?”

Iris followed the prints east for several yards.

Then stopped.

”They split.”

Galahad’s jaw tightened.

”One north. One south?”

”Yes.”

Darius drew his sword.

Not because a fight had started.

Because the situation had changed.

”We are being watched.”

No one disagreed.

Galahad looked at the alarm.

Then east.

Their path back to the charcoal camp remained open.

Probably.

That was no longer good enough.

”We leave now.”

They crossed eastward.

The voices stopped.

The bells stopped too.

That bothered Darius more.

Silence could mean distance.

Or decision.

Iris tracked while moving, searching for any sign the booted figures had crossed behind them again.

Nothing.

They reached the first rise.

Still nothing.

The stone depression.

Nothing.

Then Sera stopped.

”Above.”

Everyone looked.

A shape moved through the canopy.

Large.

Too large for the black bird from yesterday.

Dark wings passed between branches.

Gone before anyone could identify it.

Milo stared upward.

”That was not a bird.”

Sera already had an arrow drawn.

”Could have been.”

He looked at her.

”You are infected too.”

She ignored him.

Another movement came farther west.

Not one shape.

Two.

Maybe.

Branches shifted.

Then settled.

Darius looked toward the sky beyond the trees.

Three dark forms had crossed above Blackwood the previous evening.

No one in the Guild had seen them.

That did not make the possibility any less real.

Galahad said, ”Do not pursue.”

Sera lowered the bow slightly.

They continued.

The charcoal camp appeared through the trees twenty minutes later.

The foreman met them near the western boundary.

His face changed when he counted.

Five.

All returned.

Good.

Then he saw Darius’s drawn sword.

”What happened?”

Galahad answered.

”We confirmed the boundary is larger than we thought.”

The foreman looked toward the forest.

”How large?”

”At least five hundred yards along the section we checked.”

His face paled.

”That close?”

”Yes.”

”Who built it?”

”We don’t know.”

That remained true.

The foreman looked toward the workers behind him.

”Do we move camp?”

Galahad looked toward Darius.

Darius answered.

”Not yet.”

The foreman frowned.

”You just said someone built alarms in the forest.”

”And you are already outside the closed western section.”

”Is that enough?”

”For tonight.”

Not comforting.

But honest.

”Double the watch,” Darius added. ”No one leaves alone. No voices followed. No searching. If you hear bells from the west, you report it. You do not investigate.”

The foreman nodded.

”Understood.”

This time, Galahad did not wait until Blackwood to issue the next restriction.

He took the camp’s route board and drew a wider red boundary around the entire western work area.

NO ENTRY WEST OF THIS LINE

The closure expanded.

One finished action.

One consequence earned by evidence.

At the Guild, Kael had spent the day dealing with ordinary work.

That somehow felt stranger now.

Two F-rank adventurers argued over whether a failed herb-gathering contract counted against promotion.

A clerk discovered that one client had listed the same missing mule under two different requests.

An E-rank party returned from a cellar infestation with twelve dead tunnel rats and one living chicken they insisted had ”joined the team.”

Kael did not ask.

He wanted to.

He did not.

Progress.

Derrick Sorn spent most of the afternoon repairing leather straps that did not need repairing.

Kael eventually sat across from him.

”You are going to ruin that.”

Derrick looked down.

One strap had been tightened so many times the edge had begun to curl.

He stopped.

”I hate waiting.”

”I know.”

”You hate it too.”

”Yes.”

Derrick looked toward the Guild entrance.

”If they find proof Rellan is alive, Galahad still won’t let me go.”

Kael did not lie.

”Probably not.”

Derrick laughed once without humor.

”Useful.”

Kael leaned back.

”You want me to overrule him?”

Derrick looked at him.

For a moment, Kael thought he might say yes.

Instead, he looked down.

”No.”

That answer mattered.

”Why not?”

”Because then the Guild means nothing.”

Kael watched him.

Derrick continued.

”If the prince decides rank stops mattering whenever someone cares enough, then everyone will eventually care enough.”

Kael smiled faintly.

”That sounded almost reasonable.”

Derrick looked offended.

”Victor has been spending too much time here.”

Kael laughed.

The five-person team returned before sunset.

Derrick was on his feet before the front doors finished opening.

Kael stood too.

No visible injuries.

Good.

No missing people.

Better.

But something had happened.

Galahad did not stop in the hall.

”Office.”

Kael followed.

Derrick did too.

This time Galahad did not need to invite him.

Inside, Iris laid out the revised field map.

Three new symbols.

Kael looked at them.

”More alarms.”

”Three confirmed,” Galahad said. ”Including yesterday’s.”

”Spacing?”

Iris showed him.

”At least five hundred yards north to south.”

Kael stared.

”So it is a perimeter.”

”A partial perimeter,” Iris corrected.

He nodded.

Right.

Do not inflate.

”Human-made?”

”Ropes, knots, bells, carved identifiers, maintained brush.”

”Recent maintenance?”

”Yes.”

Kael looked toward Darius.

”And someone crossed your trail.”

Darius nodded.

”At least two people wearing boots.”

”Seen?”

”No.”

”Fresh enough to know they were there while you were?”

Iris answered.

”Likely.”

Kael’s expression tightened.

”Watching you?”

”Possibly.”

Milo dropped into a chair.

”Very possibly.”

Iris looked at him.

He raised both hands.

”Sorry.”

Galahad continued.

”The bells sounded while we were north of the first alarm.”

Kael looked toward him.

”The ones you found?”

”No.”

”Others?”

”Yes.”

”How many?”

”At least several distinct positions.”

Sera spoke.

”Enough to suggest the line extends farther than what we checked.”

Kael looked down at the map.

A perimeter.

Alarm bells.

Human movement.

Maintained path.

Voice imitation.

Unidentified large creature signs.

Possible flying shapes.

Missing people.

The pieces were getting harder to keep separate.

That mattered.

He looked toward Galahad.

”Still B?”

No one spoke immediately.

Galahad pulled the classification sheet closer.

He read the current reasons again.

Multiple missing persons.

Deliberate route manipulation.

Unidentified large threat.

Historical incidents predating Guild operations.

Current casualty status unknown.

Then he added a second page.

New verified evidence:

Maintained concealed approach route.

Multiple alarm lines indicating organized perimeter control.

Recent unidentified human movement within the controlled area.

Voice phenomenon demonstrating selective use of known names.

Possible aerial threat remains unconfirmed.

Galahad stared at the list.

Darius stood across from him.

Kael waited.

Finally Galahad said, ”The problem is no longer whether this exceeds a normal B-rank investigation.”

Derrick’s expression changed.

Kael leaned forward.

”What is the problem?”

”Whether we have enough to call it A without knowing what is behind the perimeter.”

Darius answered.

”Yes.”

Galahad looked toward him.

”Yes, we do?”

”Yes.”

The room became quiet.

Darius pointed toward the map.

”A B-rank team can investigate dangerous terrain, dangerous creatures, and organized hostile activity.”

Then toward the alarms.

”But this is not one of those things anymore.”

Another point.

”We have coordinated perimeter control.”

Another.

”Unidentified intelligence manipulating movement.”

Another.

”An unknown creature large enough to leave elevated claw damage.”

Another.

”Multiple disappearances.”

Another.

”Possible aerial movement.”

He looked at Galahad.

”And the team was observed without identifying the observers.”

Galahad said nothing.

Darius continued.

”If you send a standard B-rank team across that line now, you are asking them to enter a controlled zone where the enemy knows they are coming and they do not know what the enemy is.”

That settled something.

Not emotionally.

Operationally.

Galahad pulled the classification sheet toward him.

He crossed out:

CURRENT CLASSIFICATION: B-RANK INVESTIGATION

Then wrote slowly.

CURRENT CLASSIFICATION: A-RANK INVESTIGATION

Derrick stared at the words.

Kael did too.

No celebration.

No excitement.

No sense that the story had finally become larger.

Only responsibility.

Galahad added the reason beneath it.

Escalation basis:

Organized concealed perimeter

Deliberate route control

Active observation of investigative personnel

Unidentified intelligent voice phenomenon

Multiple unresolved disappearances

Unidentified large ground or climbing threat

Possible aerial component

Threat elements may be coordinated

He stopped at the last line.

May be.

Not are.

Correct.

Kael looked toward him.

”What changes?”

Galahad set down the quill.

”Everything.”

Derrick asked quietly, ”Who goes now?”

Galahad did not answer him first.

He looked at Kael.

”Blackwood has no A-rank adventurers.”

”I know.”

”We also cannot recruit one before whatever is behind that perimeter decides to move.”

Kael nodded.

”So House support.”

”Yes.”

Darius folded his arms.

”How much?”

Galahad looked toward him.

”Enough that crossing the perimeter is not a reconnaissance mistake.”

Kael understood what that meant.

This was the point the Guild had been approaching since the first missing party.

The investigation had earned its escalation.

Not because the story needed a stronger monster.

Because the evidence had forced the question upward.

Kael looked at the map.

The white-marked route disappeared west.

Beyond it sat a controlled perimeter.

Beyond that, something had been taking people for months.

Maybe longer.

The Adventure Guild had spent days learning what it did not know.

Now it finally knew enough to admit one thing clearly.

The next team would not be searching the edge.

It would be going inside.
