The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

They crossed the first alarm line shortly after midday.

Nothing happened.

Kael had expected something to happen.

That expectation irritated him almost as much as the silence.

The concealed bell remained wrapped beneath its branch exactly where Iris had found it the previous day. The thin cord stretched through the brush, disappearing between roots and low growth before continuing toward whatever network had been built deeper west.

Nobody touched it.

Nobody cut it.

Iris led them twenty yards north before stopping beside a shallow depression where rainwater had carved a narrow channel through the soil. The alarm cord passed above the channel, but several exposed roots beneath it created just enough space for one person at a time to crawl underneath without disturbing the line.

Galahad looked at Iris.

”Certain?”

”No.”

Milo, standing behind Kael, sighed quietly.

”We have been gone less than half a day and I already miss certainty.”

Iris ignored him.

She crouched beside the roots and studied the cord again.

”I can tell you the line is under tension. I can tell you touching the roots should not move it. I cannot tell you whether there is another alarm beneath the leaves.”

Darius looked at the ground.

”Check.”

Iris did.

For several minutes, nobody moved.

She cleared nothing unnecessarily. She used the end of one arrow to lift individual leaves, then worked backward from the narrow passage until she had examined enough of the soil to satisfy herself.

Finally, she looked toward Galahad.

”Passable.”

”Order?”

”Scout first,” Darius said.

Galahad nodded.

Iris slid beneath the alarm cord.

No bell rang.

She disappeared into the brush on the western side and remained there long enough that Kael felt his shoulders tightening.

Then her face reappeared between the leaves.

”Clear.”

Sera went next.

Then Milo.

Galahad.

Kael.

Darius crossed last.

When Kael emerged on the far side, he resisted the urge to look back immediately.

He failed.

The alarm line looked unimpressive from here.

A cord.

A bell.

A few branches.

That was all.

Yet the moment it stood behind them instead of in front of them, the forest felt different.

Not because the trees had changed.

Because they had crossed from investigating the edge of someone’s territory into entering it.

Galahad looked around the group.

”Roles from here.”

Everyone nodded.

Kael glanced toward Milo.

Milo looked deeply offended by the arrangement already.

Galahad pointed toward Iris.

”Scout.”

Iris moved.

That was enough.

No names.

No casual conversation.

No giving the voices anything new if the voices were learning by listening.

They followed the old route northwest.

At first, Kael could not see the road Edwin’s map claimed had once existed.

Iris could.

She pointed out the evidence without stopping for long.

A shallow depression running between trees where repeated cart wheels had once worn away the soil.

Old stones embedded too evenly to be natural.

A retaining wall almost completely buried beneath moss.

One rotted post standing at an angle among younger growth.

The forest had reclaimed the road, but it had not erased it.

The white marks followed it.

Not exactly.

Sometimes the marks remained on the old road.

Sometimes they diverted around fallen trees or sections where the ground had collapsed.

Whoever maintained the route was not restoring the road.

They were using what remained useful.

Kael disliked that distinction.

It suggested familiarity.

The first hour beyond the perimeter produced no voices.

That bothered Milo enough that he finally spoke.

”Mobile thinks the silence is worse.”

Sera looked toward him.

”You are referring to yourself in the third person.”

”Mobile objects to the title.”

Galahad kept walking.

”Lead does not care.”

Milo stared at his back.

Kael nearly laughed.

Darius looked toward him.

Kael immediately became interested in the trees.

They continued.

The farther west they moved, the older the forest appeared.

Trunks thickened.

Underbrush diminished beneath dense shade.

The ground became uneven where roots pushed through the abandoned road.

Several times, Iris stopped because she found boot impressions.

Never enough for a reliable count.

Never clear enough to identify individuals.

Enough to establish recent movement.

People used this route.

That fact no longer surprised anyone.

After another half hour, Sera raised one hand.

Everyone stopped.

Kael heard nothing at first.

Then something struck wood in the distance.

A dull sound.

Pause.

Another.

Pause.

A third.

Not a bell.

Not an animal call.

Milo looked toward Darius.

”Mobile dislikes that too.”

Darius listened.

The sound came again.

Three strikes.

Then silence.

Galahad looked toward Iris.

”Direction?”

”West-northwest.”

”Distance?”

”Unknown.”

Sera said, ”Not close.”

That was all they could reasonably say.

They did not pursue the sound.

The marked route already led generally toward it.

That mattered.

Kael looked at the white slash on the nearest tree.

Someone had built a path through the forest.

Someone maintained alarms along its eastern edge.

Someone moved through it recently.

Now something farther west was making repeated impacts.

He wondered how long all of it had existed while Blackwood categorized individual disappearances as unrelated problems.

He did not like the answer forming in his mind.

Years.

Maybe.

He stopped himself.

No.

That was exactly how bad investigation became story.

Galahad glanced back.

”Prince.”

Kael realized he had slowed.

”Thinking.”

”Walk while doing it.”

”Helpful.”

They moved on.

The first structure appeared shortly afterward.

Iris found it before anyone else because she was looking down.

She stopped beside a rectangular depression partly hidden by ferns.

”Foundation.”

Kael moved closer.

Stone.

Old mortar.

The remains of a wall line disappeared beneath roots and moss.

Galahad checked the map.

”Kiln station?”

”Possibly,” Iris said.

Milo looked around.

”If this is a station, it has poor service.”

Sera pointed through the trees.

”More stone.”

They spread only far enough to inspect the immediate area without breaking formation.

The ruin was larger than Kael expected.

Not a village.

A work site.

Three circular kiln bases stood within a wide clearing that the forest had nearly reclaimed. One had collapsed completely. Another remained as a waist-high ring of blackened stone. The third leaned into a young tree growing through its center.

A long rectangular foundation marked where a shelter had once stood.

Near the northern side of the clearing, a stone trough remained half buried beneath leaves.

Kael looked toward Galahad.

”First kiln station.”

”Likely.”

The route did not end there.

White marks continued west.

That was important.

Iris moved through the clearing slowly.

Darius stayed near Kael without crowding him.

Sera watched the canopy.

Milo walked toward the collapsed shelter foundation, then stopped before entering.

”Scout.”

Iris looked over.

He pointed.

”Not old.”

She joined him.

Kael followed several paces behind.

At first, he saw only stone.

Then the difference became obvious.

One section of the old foundation had been cleared.

Not repaired.

Cleared.

Leaves and fallen branches had been removed from an area large enough for several people to sit or sleep.

Ash marked a shallow depression near the wall.

Galahad crouched.

”Fire?”

Iris touched the edge of the ash with a stick.

”Old enough to be cold.”

”How old?”

”Days. Possibly weeks.”

Milo pointed toward the stone beside it.

”Recent scratches.”

Three narrow lines had been cut into the surface.

Not the same as the alarm identifiers.

Different.

Kael leaned closer.

”Counting?”

”Could be,” Iris said.

Milo looked at her.

”I am going to make you say ’possibly’ until one of us dies.”

”Possible.”

He closed his eyes.

Sera almost smiled.

Almost.

Darius moved toward the clearing’s western edge.

”Tracks.”

Iris joined him immediately.

Several boot impressions crossed the soft soil between the kiln stones.

More than they had seen on the road.

She studied them carefully.

”Multiple people.”

Galahad stepped closer.

”How many?”

”More than three.”

”Recent?”

”Yes.”

”Same direction?”

”No.”

Iris pointed.

”Some enter from the east. Some leave west. Some move north around the clearing.”

Kael looked at the old station.

”A gathering point.”

Iris did not answer.

Galahad did.

”Likely.”

That was stronger.

The evidence supported it.

Kael looked toward the cleared sleeping area.

”Any sign of Rellan?”

”No.”

”Derren?”

”No.”

”Anyone?”

Iris continued searching.

For ten minutes, they found nothing personal.

No dropped packs.

No weapons.

No clothing.

No blood.

Then Sera called from the northern edge.

”Here.”

They joined her.

A tree stood beside the old stone trough.

White marks covered its trunk.

Not one.

Seven.

Some vertical.

Some angled.

One almost horizontal.

Kael stared.

”That’s different.”

”Yes,” Iris said.

Milo looked toward the route behind them.

”Intersection?”

Galahad checked the surroundings.

Three narrow paths left the clearing.

One continued west.

Another turned north.

A third bent southwest.

All three showed occasional pale marks.

The kiln station was not simply a stop.

It was a junction.

Kael felt the investigation expand beneath his feet.

Galahad saw it too.

”We do not split.”

Nobody argued.

Iris examined the marks.

”Different shapes may indicate direction.”

”Can you read them?”

”No.”

”Can someone else?”

A voice answered from the forest.

”Yes.”

Everyone moved.

Darius’s sword cleared its sheath.

Sera’s bow rose.

Iris stepped backward toward the center.

Milo’s hand went to his weapon.

Kael turned toward the sound.

A man stood between two trees north of the clearing.

Kael had not seen him approach.

That alone was a problem.

He wore dark leather reinforced with small metal plates, a hood pushed back from his head, and a short cloak stained by travel. A curved blade rested at one hip. Another shorter weapon sat across his lower back.

He looked human.

That meant very little.

Galahad did not lower his sword.

”Stop there.”

The man did.

He seemed more curious than frightened.

His gaze moved across the group.

Darius.

Sera.

Iris.

Milo.

Kael.

Then Galahad.

”You crossed the bells.”

Galahad’s expression hardened.

”So you know them.”

The man smiled faintly.

”Everyone who belongs west of them does.”

Kael felt something settle.

There it was.

A person connected to the perimeter.

Alive.

Present.

Talking.

Galahad asked, ”Who are you?”

The man looked at him.

”You came into our road.”

”That was not my question.”

”No.”

Darius stepped slightly forward.

The stranger’s gaze shifted toward him.

For the first time, his confidence changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

”You’re the Shield.”

Darius said nothing.

The man’s eyes moved toward Kael next.

Then narrowed.

”And you’re the prince.”

Milo murmured, ”So much for roles.”

Galahad ignored him.

”You know who we are.”

”Blackwood is not subtle.”

”Neither is building alarm lines around a forest.”

The man smiled again.

”Those lines are not for Blackwood.”

”Who are they for?”

”People who should turn back.”

Galahad looked toward the white-marked junction.

”Rellan Dorr’s party?”

The man’s expression did not change.

Kael watched carefully.

”Derren?”

Nothing.

”Three older disappearances?”

Still nothing.

Galahad lowered his voice.

”Do you know those names?”

The man shrugged.

”I know many names.”

That was not an answer.

Darius spoke.

”Where are the missing people?”

The stranger looked toward him.

”Which ones?”

Kael’s stomach tightened.

Galahad took one step forward.

The man immediately raised a hand.

”Careful.”

Sera’s bowstring tightened.

The stranger looked toward her.

”Especially you.”

Darius’s voice hardened.

”Threat?”

”No.”

The man glanced upward.

”Warning.”

Everyone looked.

Nothing.

The canopy remained still.

Then Kael heard it.

A wingbeat.

Heavy.

Far above.

One.

Then another.

Sera shifted position.

The stranger did not.

”You shouldn’t stand in the open part of the kiln.”

Galahad looked at him.

”Why?”

The answer came from behind them.

A shriek.

Not human.

Not any animal Kael recognized.

The sound tore through the clearing.

Sera turned first.

Something black dropped through the canopy.

Fast.

Too fast.

Darius moved.

Kael saw only fragments.

Wide wings.

A narrow scaled body.

A long hooked jaw.

Claws extended beneath it.

Not the enormous creature that had marked the pine.

Smaller.

Still large enough to kill a man.

Darius stepped into its descent and struck.

The creature twisted.

His blade clipped one wing instead of its neck.

Sera released.

The arrow entered beneath the opposite wing.

The creature screamed and crashed across the clearing, tearing through ferns before slamming into one of the old kiln walls.

Stone broke.

Milo moved left.

Iris right.

Kael drew his sword.

The stranger had vanished.

Kael stared toward the northern trees.

”Where—”

”Later,” Galahad snapped.

Right.

The creature was not dead.

It rose.

Kael finally saw it clearly.

Four legs beneath a lean reptilian body.

Two broad wings.

Black-gray scales.

Long tail.

Not a dragon.

Too small.

Too narrow.

A drake.

Kael had seen illustrations before.

Not this exact kind.

The wounded creature opened its jaws.

Heat shimmered.

Darius shouted.

”Spread!”

They did.

Fire burst across the clearing.

Not a dragon’s great torrent.

A violent cone of orange flame.

It struck the old kiln stones and rolled around them.

Kael felt the heat across his face even from several yards away.

The drake turned toward Sera.

She had wounded it.

It knew.

It lunged.

Milo intercepted its line without actually trying to block it.

Kael understood why Galahad had chosen him.

Milo moved at the last possible moment, forcing the drake to adjust.

Its claws struck empty ground.

Sera stepped sideways and fired again.

The arrow glanced off the shoulder scales.

Darius came from the opposite side.

His sword cut deep into the injured wing.

The drake collapsed onto one side.

Kael moved.

He did not rush straight at the head.

He saw the tail instead.

It swept low.

He jumped backward.

The tail missed his knees by inches.

Aura moved through his blade.

He struck the exposed hind leg.

The sword bit between scales.

The drake screamed.

Then Iris shouted.

”Above!”

Another shadow crossed the canopy.

Then a second.

Galahad’s face changed.

”Commander!”

Darius already understood.

They were not fighting one.

Kael looked toward the first drake.

Wounded.

Still dangerous.

Two more circling overhead.

Maybe more.

The stranger had warned them.

Then disappeared before the attack.

That was not coincidence.

Darius stepped forward.

His Aura changed.

Kael felt it before he saw it.

The pressure around the commander sharpened.

”Finish this one.”

Galahad nodded.

”Sera, wing. Prince, left. Mobile, keep the head turning. Scout, watch above.”

Nobody questioned the commands.

The drake tried to rise.

Milo moved first.

He darted toward its injured side, struck once against the jaw, and retreated before the creature could bite.

The head followed him.

Kael entered from the opposite direction.

His blade flashed.

Not Ice.

Not Light.

Sword and Aura.

He cut into the wound Darius had already opened near the wing joint.

The drake twisted toward him.

Sera’s arrow struck the membrane of the good wing.

Not enough to kill.

Enough to ruin balance.

Darius ended it.

One step.

One cut.

His blade entered beneath the jaw and drove upward through the skull.

The drake collapsed.

The entire fight had lasted less than half a minute.

Kael was breathing hard anyway.

Darius pulled his sword free.

”Trees.”

They moved.

No celebration.

No examining the corpse.

No standing proudly over a kill while other threats circled overhead.

They entered the denser western edge of the clearing and used the old kiln stones and trees to break the aerial approach.

Sera watched upward.

”One.”

Pause.

”Two.”

Another shadow.

”Three.”

Kael looked toward her.

”Three?”

”At least.”

The dark shapes circled once.

Then moved west.

Not attacking.

Following.

Or reporting.

Kael disliked both possibilities.

Galahad looked toward the dead drake.

”That is not the creature that made the claw marks near Derren.”

Darius shook his head.

”Too small.”

”Could there be larger ones?”

”Yes.”

Milo wiped his blade.

”I preferred when everything was possible.”

Iris was looking north.

”Tracks.”

Kael followed her gaze.

Human boot prints.

Fresh.

Leading away from where the stranger had stood.

Galahad looked toward them.

”Do we follow?”

Nobody answered immediately.

That mattered.

The man might know where the missing people were.

He also knew the perimeter.

He knew the drakes.

He had stood in the clearing waiting for them.

Or watching them.

Darius looked toward the western sky.

”No.”

Kael turned toward him.

”He knows something.”

”Yes.”

”He may know where Rellan is.”

”Yes.”

”And we let him leave?”

”We do not know whether he is leading us.”

Kael hated that.

Which meant it was probably correct.

Galahad nodded.

”We document the station.”

Milo looked toward the dead drake.

”And our new friend?”

”Evidence.”

”Very talkative evidence.”

Galahad ignored him.

Iris searched where the stranger had stood.

Nothing useful.

No dropped item.

No clear identifying mark.

The boots continued north for a short distance, then merged with one of the maintained paths leaving the kiln junction.

Exactly what they would expect from someone familiar with the route.

Sera stayed near the tree line while the others documented the clearing.

The dead drake became the first confirmed creature tied directly to the controlled western area.

Iris measured it without pretending expertise she did not have.

Approximately twelve feet from snout to tail.

Wingspan larger.

Black-gray scales.

Hooked claws.

Fire-capable.

No collars.

No visible harness.

No obvious ownership marks.

Kael looked toward Galahad.

”Wild?”

”Unknown.”

”Trained?”

”Unknown.”

Milo sighed.

”I walked into that.”

”Yes,” Iris said.

They searched the old kiln station more thoroughly.

The cleared shelter area.

Cold fire pit.

Recent tracks.

White route junction.

Nothing belonging to the missing adventurers.

Then Darius found the first thing that made everyone stop.

It was wedged between two stones inside the old trough.

A small metal badge.

Dirty.

Scratched.

Galahad recognized it before Kael did.

Guild issue.

D-rank.

Derrick Sorn’s friend had been one of the first two adventurers to receive one.

Rellan Dorr.

Galahad picked it up carefully.

He turned it over.

The identification number remained visible.

No one spoke.

Kael felt something cold settle beneath his ribs.

”Rellan?”

Galahad checked again.

”Yes.”

That changed the station.

Rellan had been here.

Or his badge had.

Those were not automatically the same thing.

Iris said it before Kael could.

”Could have been carried.”

Galahad nodded.

”Could.”

Milo looked toward the northern path where the stranger had disappeared.

”He knew the name.”

Kael looked at him.

Milo continued.

”When Lead asked about Rellan, the man did not ask who that was.”

Galahad’s expression hardened.

”You noticed.”

”I occasionally perform my assigned function.”

Sera looked toward the badge.

”He also said he knows many names.”

Kael remembered.

The voices knew names too.

The stranger knew names.

That did not prove connection.

But the number of separate possibilities was shrinking.

Darius looked toward Galahad.

”Objective changes.”

”Yes.”

”We have direct evidence tied to the missing party.”

”Yes.”

”Continue?”

Galahad looked west.

The white route split into three directions.

The drakes had flown west.

The stranger had gone north.

Rellan’s badge sat in his hand.

They had crossed the perimeter less than three hours ago.

Already they had confirmed an occupied route junction, a hostile fire-breathing drake, multiple aerial threats, and a man who knew who they were and understood the alarm network.

The mission was doing what an investigation should.

Answering questions.

And creating better ones.

Galahad made the decision.

”We continue to the next verified point.”

Kael looked at him.

”Which direction?”

Galahad held up Rellan’s badge.

”We find where this came from.”

Iris nodded.

She returned to the trough.

This time, she examined everything around it as a deposition point rather than an old structure.

Stone.

Leaves.

Mud.

The northern side had more disturbance.

Boots.

At least one set.

Then another sign.

A drag line.

Faint.

Old enough to be difficult.

Not old enough to disappear entirely beneath the protected lip of the trough.

Iris followed it.

Ten yards.

Twenty.

Toward the western path.

Not north.

Galahad looked toward the stranger’s route.

Then toward the drag sign.

Two directions.

One person who knew names.

One physical trace tied to Rellan.

The choice became simpler.

”West.”

They moved.

The old kiln station disappeared behind them.

So did the dead drake.

Nobody noticed that less than five minutes after they left, the stranger returned to the clearing.

He stood at the northern edge and looked toward the drake’s body.

Then toward the western trail.

A second person emerged behind him.

This one wore a gray cloak and carried a short spear.

”They found the badge.”

The first man nodded.

”You left it.”

”No.”

The second person looked toward him.

For the first time, the man’s faint amusement disappeared.

Neither spoke for several seconds.

Then another bell sounded somewhere far to the west.

One strike.

Then two.

The man looked toward the sound.

”That’s not ours.”

His companion tightened a hand around the spear.

”The lower route?”

”No.”

Another bell sounded.

Three times.

The first man’s expression changed.

”Move.”

They disappeared into the trees.

Farther west, Kael’s group heard the same bells.

One.

Two.

Then three.

Milo looked toward Galahad.

”Mobile would like to formally state that those sound different.”

Iris stopped.

”They are.”

Darius looked west.

”How?”

”The perimeter bells were warnings.”

Kael listened as another sequence echoed through the forest.

Three quick strikes.

Pause.

Then three again.

Sera raised her bow.

”And these?”

Iris looked toward the road ahead.

”Something is calling people.”

The marked route descended.

The air changed with it.

Warmer.

Only slightly.

Enough that Kael noticed.

He looked toward Darius.

Darius had noticed too.

Ahead, between the trees, a faint gray haze drifted above the lower ground.

Not fog.

Smoke.

The drag sign continued toward it.

Galahad drew his sword.

”Formation.”

They tightened.

Nobody used a personal name.

Nobody followed a voice.

Nobody rushed.

They crossed deeper into the controlled forest together.

And somewhere ahead, something screamed.

Not a drake.

Something much larger.
