The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

The Blackwood Adventurers’ Guild entered its second week without anyone noticing the exact moment it happened.

There was no bell reserved for surviving seven days.

No commemorative banner appeared above the entrance. Galahad did not gather the registered adventurers inside the Commons to congratulate them for managing an entire week without burning the building down, and Kael had been specifically forbidden from suggesting anything resembling a celebration.

Instead, the doors opened at the first morning bell.

Mira Doss took her place behind the Registry Counter with three ledgers already arranged according to whatever system made sense in her head. Nalia Greve opened the contract deposit box beneath the supervision of a second clerk. The cooks in the Commons started serving breakfast. Stable workers checked the overnight horses. A pair of F-rank adventurers entered arguing over which one of them had forgotten a rope, and an E-rank hunter walked directly to the Quest Board without removing her wet cloak.

Galahad watched all of it from the middle of the Guild Hall.

Then he looked toward Kael.

”No speech.”

Kael stopped several steps inside the doorway. ”Good morning to you too.”

”No plaque.”

”I brought no plaque.”

”No announcement about the first week.”

”I brought Edwin.”

Galahad looked past him.

Edwin Ashcombe entered carrying three ledgers.

Galahad’s expression worsened.

”That is somehow more threatening.”

Edwin approached calmly. ”You agreed to a seven-day operational review.”

”I know what I agreed to.”

Lily entered behind him with another folder.

Galahad looked toward Kael. ”How many people did you bring?”

”Three.”

”You are one of the three.”

”Yes.”

”That makes it worse.”

Kael smiled.

The meeting would not begin until the busiest part of morning registration passed, so Kael had time to watch the Guild operate without interfering. That was becoming easier now that the institution no longer depended on him being present.

The Quest Board had changed again.

The widow’s roof-repair contract had returned to the available F-rank section now that the rain had passed and the roof had dried enough to work safely. Several gathering jobs had also been restored after their weather delays. An E-rank escort had been accepted early that morning, and the D-rank caravan contract remained under the Active Contracts section with Rellan Dorr’s party still on the road.

No higher-ranked work had appeared.

That was appropriate.

The Guild could not manufacture C-, B-, or A-rank threats simply because the board had sections waiting for them.

Near the carved rank explanation, two younger adventurers were reading the advancement rules introduced yesterday.

One pointed toward the F-to-E requirements.

”Five contracts.”

His companion nodded.

”So five and then E?”

”No.”

”It says five.”

”It says eligibility.”

”That means E.”

”That means you can ask.”

The first man frowned.

Kael smiled.

At least one of them could read instructions properly.

Mira apparently heard the conversation from behind the counter.

Without looking up, she said, ”He is right.”

The adventurer turned.

”Which one?”

”The one who read the entire sentence.”

The second man looked pleased.

The first walked closer to the counter.

”What if I do five hard F-rank contracts?”

”Then your record will show five completed contracts.”

”And then?”

”If you meet the other requirements, you become eligible for review.”

”What if I pass?”

”Then you may be promoted.”

”May?”

Mira finally looked at him. ”Do you want me to replace the word with a longer one?”

He stared.

”No.”

”Good.”

Nalia laughed from the contract side of the counter.

Kael continued toward the Commons.

The hall was not as crowded as it had been during yesterday’s rain, but the building had clearly become a regular gathering place. Adventurers were no longer entering only when they needed contracts. Several arrived simply to eat, hear what work was available, find temporary party members, or exchange information about roads and villages.

That was creating value the Guild had never formally planned.

Information traveled through the Commons.

A hunter returning from Bellhaven warned others about a muddy turn near a farm road.

A caravan guard mentioned that prices for horse feed were higher near Stonebrook.

Someone else had heard that a bridge farther west remained passable but should not be crossed with two loaded wagons side by side.

Not all of it would be accurate.

That was the problem.

Kael stopped near one table.

Three adventurers were discussing the unknown predator east of the farms—the one Reysa’s party had tracked before properly withdrawing.

”It’s a dire wolf,” one man said.

Another shook his head. ”Too big.”

”Dire wolves are big.”

”My cousin saw the tracks.”

”Your cousin lives south.”

”He travels.”

Kael looked toward Galahad.

The Guild leader had followed him.

”Rumors.”

”Yes.”

”What are you doing about them?”

”Nothing.”

Kael raised an eyebrow.

”Nothing?”

”Not every stupid conversation needs an official correction.”

”That one involves a potentially dangerous creature.”

”And the official notice says the threat remains unidentified and the area is under observation.”

Kael looked toward the Quest Board.

A small notice had indeed been posted near the general information section.

EASTERN FARM DISTRICT — LARGE PREDATOR UNDER ASSESSMENT

No active hunting contract authorized.

Do not pursue unverified tracks.

Report new sightings to the Guild or local watch.

No dramatic description.

No invented species.

No bounty.

Kael nodded.

”Good.”

Galahad folded his arms. ”If I chase every rumor around the Commons, I will spend my life arguing with people who heard something from a cousin.”

”Fair.”

The System appeared.

[Guild Information Management Observation]

Official notice available

Unverified rumor activity: Present

Immediate intervention requirement: Low

Advisory: Excessive response to informal rumor may accidentally legitimize unreliable information.

Kael dismissed the panel.

Sometimes saying less really was administration.

He still disliked how often that lesson appeared.

The seven-day review began after the second morning bell.

Galahad took the head of a long table inside one of the Guild’s meeting rooms. Kael sat opposite him rather than taking the head himself. Edwin and Lily occupied one side. Mira and Nalia sat together on the other, each carrying different records.

Healer Vessa joined them several minutes later.

Grom attended because Guild emergencies interacted with Black Dragon readiness, though he made it clear he intended to leave once the security portion was complete.

Darius did not attend.

He had received the report summary and told Grom to represent Black Dragon command for the operational review.

Kael approved of that.

Not every meeting required the most senior person available.

Galahad looked around the table.

”One week.”

Kael waited.

Galahad looked at him.

”What?”

”You said it.”

”Yes.”

”I thought there would be more.”

”There would be if you were speaking.”

Lily hid a smile.

Galahad opened the operational ledger.

”Fifty-one registered adventurers by yesterday’s close. Twenty picked up F-rank placement, twelve E-rank, one D-rank. The rest remain under verification or assessment. No C-rank or above.”

Edwin nodded.

”Registration growth?”

”Fastest during the first three days. Slower now.”

Mira turned one ledger around.

”Opening-day curiosity inflated the early numbers. Several people began registration and never returned for assessment.”

Kael looked toward her.

”Do we remove them?”

”Not immediately. Their applications remain incomplete.”

”How long?”

”Thirty days before archival suspension unless they return.”

Galahad added, ”If they come back after that, Mira can reopen the record rather than registering them as a completely new person.”

Kael nodded.

That was exactly the sort of detail he would never have thought about when imagining an Adventurers’ Guild.

Edwin looked toward Nalia.

”Contracts?”

She opened her own ledger.

”Fourteen completed by the end of yesterday. One properly withdrawn because of injury. Three weather delays. One delivery dispute. One party-payment complaint. Both resolved. Several requests rejected before posting because they involved private debt, unverified criminal accusations, or work outside Guild authority.”

”Client volume?”

”Steady.”

”Enough?”

”For current membership.”

Kael leaned forward.

”What types?”

Nalia had anticipated that.

”Gathering and delivery are the largest categories. Then local escort work, animal or beast assessment, pest removal, repair and labor requests, and a smaller number of investigation contracts.”

Kael looked toward Galahad.

”Repair work is staying?”

”If people pay and the work fits the Guild.”

”Even roofs?”

”Especially roofs if the alternative is someone falling off one because a widow cannot find labor.”

Kael smiled.

The Guild was broader than monster hunting.

That mattered.

Nalia continued. ”The important part is that F-rank work is not becoming dependent on combat. New adventurers can build records without being forced to stab something every week.”

Grom nodded.

”Good.”

Everyone looked toward him.

He shrugged.

”People who believe violence is the only useful skill become a problem.”

That was coming from the former Spear King.

Kael appreciated the irony.

Mira moved to rank advancement.

”We have received six questions about promotion.”

”Six?” Kael asked.

”Formal questions. Informal questions probably exceed thirty.”

Nalia nodded emphatically.

Galahad looked toward the rank rules.

”Yesterday’s F-to-E eligibility standard should reduce some confusion.”

Edwin read it.

”Five completed contracts minimum, two qualifying field contracts, no unresolved serious disciplinary matter, practical review.”

”Correct.”

”Minimum time?”

The room paused.

Kael looked toward Galahad.

”You left that out.”

”Intentionally.”

”Why?”

”Because five contracts completed over five days and five completed over five weeks do not automatically tell me which adventurer is more reliable.”

Mira nodded.

”We need enough record to observe behavior, but a fixed calendar requirement may slow experienced people unnecessarily.”

Kael thought about it.

”So no minimum number of days yet.”

”Not yet.”

The System appeared.

[Rank Advancement Framework Review]

Current data volume: Insufficient for reliable time-at-rank minimum

Recommendation: Observe initial promotion candidates before standardizing additional threshold

Kael dismissed it.

Galahad had reached the same conclusion.

Good.

Edwin moved toward finances.

That changed the room.

Nalia pulled a thicker ledger forward.

”Contract rewards held are not Guild income.”

Edwin nodded approvingly.

Kael looked toward him.

”She started with that because of you, didn’t she?”

”Yes.”

Nalia continued. ”All active-contract reward deposits are accounted separately. Brokerage fees are Guild revenue. Material-brokerage commissions are currently very small. Commons food sales contribute modest revenue, but most of that supports food purchase and staff.”

Kael looked toward Galahad.

”Is the Guild profitable?”

Edwin answered first.

”Wrong question.”

Kael sighed.

”Of course.”

”The Guild has operated seven days.”

”I know.”

”We can determine whether income is currently meeting operating expenses. We cannot responsibly declare the institution permanently profitable after one week.”

Kael looked toward Nalia.

She nodded.

”Current ordinary income covers basic daily operation.”

”That sounds good.”

”It is.”

”Then why did Edwin attack me?”

”Habit.”

Edwin ignored her.

Nalia continued. ”Staff wages, food operations, healer rotation, supplies, stable operations, recordkeeping materials, security, minor repairs, and routine administration are currently covered. The Relief Reserve remains very small because we are only allocating from verified surplus.”

Kael nodded.

”Keep it small.”

Vessa looked toward him.

”That sounded painful.”

”It was.”

The Guild Relief Reserve had enough coin to matter if someone required recovery transport or modest emergency assistance.

It did not have enough to become a pension system.

That was fine.

Edwin pointed toward the brokerage structure.

”Ten percent remains workable?”

”For ordinary contracts,” Galahad said. ”Yes.”

”Higher-risk contracts?”

”Fifteen percent only when verification, specialized assessment, unusual financial handling, or administrative burden actually justifies it.”

Kael nodded.

”No turning fifteen into normal because it makes more coin.”

Galahad looked offended.

”I know.”

Nalia added, ”Clients ask why some contracts cost more.”

”What do you tell them?”

”The truth.”

Kael smiled.

That was becoming an institutional principle whether anyone officially named it or not.

The next subject was the Infirmary.

Vessa opened with, ”Nobody died.”

Galahad nodded solemnly.

”Excellent week.”

She ignored him.

”One contract injury requiring treatment. Minor. Several assessment injuries. Several people walked into the Infirmary for problems unrelated to Guild work because they discovered a healer was here.”

Kael frowned.

”What kind?”

”Old knee pain. A rash. Someone asked whether I could remove a wart.”

Nalia laughed.

Vessa looked annoyed.

”I am not laughing.”

”Sorry.”

Kael asked, ”What did you do?”

”Directed ordinary medical cases toward Blackwood’s clinic where appropriate.”

”So the Guild Infirmary does not become a second public clinic.”

”Correct.”

That boundary mattered too.

The Guild Infirmary handled immediate Guild-related injury, stabilization, and assessment of field wounds. Blackwood’s broader medical services remained responsible for ordinary residents and longer-term treatment.

Vessa continued. ”Our twice-weekly supply count is sufficient. Rotating healer coverage remains workable. Permanent healer staffing is not yet necessary.”

Kael nodded.

No building.

No hiring spree.

He was becoming excellent at this.

Probably.

The System appeared.

[Guild Infirmary — Week 1 Review]

Contract injuries: Low

Assessment injuries: Minor / manageable

Supply pressure: Moderate

Healer rotation: Sufficient

Permanent expansion: Not currently justified

Kael read it without comment.

Grom’s part came next.

”Security.”

He placed three reports on the table.

”One fistfight.”

Galahad nodded.

”One suspected altered badge.”

Mira nodded.

”One stable-yard near-injury during rain.”

Vessa corrected him.

”Actual minor injury.”

”Not caused by violence.”

”No.”

”Then security incidents remain low.”

Grom continued. ”Guild security handled the fight. Black Dragon intervention was unnecessary. Criminal and military requests were redirected correctly. Eastern predator information transferred cleanly when the Guild reached the edge of current capability.”

Kael looked toward him.

”Anything you want changed?”

”Yes.”

Of course.

”What?”

”Runners.”

Galahad frowned slightly.

”We have runners.”

”You have runners who know where to go.”

”That sounds like a runner.”

Grom shook his head.

”You need them to know who receives what.”

He pointed toward the emergency communication form they had already revised.

”If there is an injured adventurer, they run to the Infirmary. If there is a violent dispute Guild security cannot contain, they alert the nearest assigned response. If a contract report suggests military danger, it goes through Galahad or designated Guild authority to Black Dragon command. If there is fire, nobody wastes time finding Galahad first.”

Galahad nodded slowly.

”Emergency priorities.”

”Yes.”

”Training?”

”Yes.”

Kael looked toward the System.

[Guild Emergency Communication — Week 1 Finding]

Route knowledge: Adequate

Priority judgment: Inconsistent

Recommended correction: Scenario-based runner training

That was simple enough.

Grom stood.

”That is my section.”

Kael looked toward him.

”You are leaving?”

”Yes.”

”We still have material processing.”

”You do not need the Deputy Commander to discuss animal hides.”

Fair.

Grom left.

No ceremony.

The meeting continued.

Galahad brought up the missing Quartermaster role himself.

Kael smiled immediately.

Galahad pointed at him.

”Do not.”

”I said nothing.”

”You looked pleased.”

Mira opened the stored-equipment ledger.

The Guild now possessed rank badges, practice weapons, assessment gear, ropes, protective equipment, cleaning supplies, sealed lost property, stable tools, and a growing collection of equipment temporarily held during disputes or safety review.

None of it required a full-time Quartermaster yet.

It was getting closer.

”Current stores are split between me, the stable master, and whoever is helping with assessment,” Galahad said. ”That works while we are small.”

”And when does it stop working?” Kael asked.

”When people stop knowing who has what.”

Edwin nodded.

”So establish a trigger.”

They did.

A Quartermaster position would be formally reconsidered when stored equipment volume, badge issuance, training inventory, confiscated or lost property, and assessment demands exceeded what current staff could track cleanly.

Not today.

Kael was beginning to hate that phrase.

The Harvester question followed.

Still none.

Two ordinary carcasses had been processed safely with hunters, butchers, and Hugo’s help. No magical carcass had yet been accepted.

Galahad refused to create a profession without a qualified person.

”If something dangerous arrives tomorrow?”

”We refuse processing.”

”And the adventurers?”

”They can sell through someone qualified elsewhere if they know one, or we help identify an appropriate buyer if possible.”

”What if the material is valuable?”

Galahad looked at Kael.

”That does not make us qualified.”

Kael nodded.

Right.

Value did not make poison less poisonous.

The System displayed:

[Material Processing Capacity — Week 1]

Ordinary animal processing: Adequate

Basic material appraisal: Limited but functional

Magical / hazardous processing: Inadequate

Harvester specialist need: Emerging, not yet urgent

Again.

Later.

The final subject was perhaps the most important.

”What surprised you?” Kael asked.

Everyone looked toward him.

Galahad leaned back.

”That is not in the ledger.”

”I know.”

Edwin seemed interested.

Kael looked toward Mira first.

She considered.

”How many people lie badly.”

Nalia laughed.

Mira remained serious.

”Not always maliciously. People exaggerate because they think the truth will make them look weak. They change dates because they cannot remember. They call informal work professional experience because they think otherwise it will not count.”

Kael nodded.

”And?”

”Verification needs room for uncertainty. If every inconsistency becomes an accusation of fraud, people will stop correcting mistakes.”

That was good.

Kael looked toward Nalia.

She thought longer.

”Clients.”

”What about them?”

”They are not better at describing danger than adventurers.”

Galahad smiled.

Nalia continued. ”A frightened farmer calls tracks a monster attack. A merchant calls a debt theft. Someone hears animals at night and decides there are goblins without seeing anyone. If we simply write what clients say as fact, the Quest Board becomes a rumor board.”

Kael’s expression sharpened at the mention of goblins.

Nalia noticed.

”That is why we do not.”

Good.

A sentient race did not become prey because someone made an accusation.

If a goblin—or human, elf, or anyone else—committed a crime, Blackwood dealt with the individual under law.

The Guild did not post racial hunting contracts.

Kael looked toward Vessa.

”Medical?”

”That adventurers are idiots.”

Galahad nodded.

”Confirmed.”

Vessa ignored him.

”More seriously, most injuries I expect will not come from legendary creatures. They will come from falls, bad boots, poor camp hygiene, cuts, bad water, infected wounds, and people continuing after they should stop.”

Kael thought about Corren’s ankle.

Ordinary dangers.

Again.

Edwin went next.

”The Guild creates economic demand faster than it creates permanent population.”

Kael looked toward him.

”Transient traffic.”

”Yes. Food, lodging, stables, repairs, supplies, waste, and market traffic increased even though most visiting adventurers do not live in Blackwood.”

Lily added, ”And people outside Blackwood are hearing about it.”

”New settlers?”

”Some inquiries. Not enough to change the pilot.”

Kael nodded.

Good.

No expansion yet.

Finally he looked toward Galahad.

The Guild leader remained silent for several moments.

”That people trust payment faster than they trust rules.”

Kael leaned forward.

”Explain.”

”The first completed contract changed the room because everyone saw the reward paid exactly as posted. Rules are words until people see whether you enforce them consistently.”

He tapped the contract ledger.

”An adventurer wants to know if the Guild will pay. A client wants to know whether we will actually investigate a dispute. A merchant wants to know whether our badge means anything. A village wants to know whether an adventurer can ignore the contract because he carries a sword.”

Galahad looked toward the wall separating the meeting room from the main Guild Hall.

”We can write perfect rules. People trust them after watching what happens when someone breaks one.”

Kael sat quietly.

That might have been the most useful conclusion of the entire first week.

The System appeared.

[Blackwood Adventurers’ Guild — First Week Review Complete]

Primary strengths:

Contract payment reliability

Clear jurisdictional boundaries

Adaptable procedures

Rank restrictions functioning

Client and adventurer recordkeeping improving

Internal security adequate at current scale

Primary weaknesses:

Specialist assessment capacity limited

Material processing capacity limited

Transient service pressure increasing

Credential verification dependent on central records

Guild staffing growth required if registration continues

Overall assessment: STABLE EARLY INSTITUTION

A second panel appeared.

[Development Advisory]

Do not interpret successful first-week operation as proof of long-term institutional stability.

Recommended next review interval: 7 days

Kael almost laughed.

Galahad looked toward him.

”What?”

”Nothing.”

”That usually means something.”

”The Guild survived.”

Galahad shrugged.

”Now it has to survive another week.”

Exactly.

Kael left the Guild shortly before midday for Oakridge.

Master Rennick had arrived.

The retired teacher was not what Kael expected.

He had imagined a thin old man carrying books beneath one arm, perhaps with spectacles and the patient disposition of someone who had spent decades teaching children.

Instead, Rennick was broad-shouldered despite his age, carried a walking stick he apparently did not require, and had greeted Lily by asking whether the Tenth Prince was ”the young fool repairing mills without understanding bearings.”

Kael liked him immediately.

The old schoolhouse stood open behind them.

Master Rowan had already inspected the structure. The roof repairs required were limited. Two windows needed replacement, the warped flooring could be repaired rather than replaced entirely, and the old stove was no longer safe enough for winter use.

Rennick stood in the doorway looking inside.

Dust covered the old benches.

A faded writing board hung at the front.

Several shelves remained empty.

One narrow cabinet contained damaged books, old practice tablets, and records from the school’s final years.

Kael stood beside him.

”You taught here?”

”Twenty-eight years.”

”Why did it close?”

”No money.”

Direct.

”The House stopped supporting it?”

”House support became irregular. Families paid when they could. Then the previous administration decided other expenses mattered more.”

Kael’s jaw tightened.

Rennick continued, ”Teachers need to eat too.”

Fair.

”How many students?”

”At the end? Eleven regularly. More during winter.”

”Why more during winter?”

Rennick looked at him as though the answer should be obvious.

”Farm children work.”

Kael nodded.

Seasonal education.

The labor analysis had already suggested the same problem.

A school could not simply declare that children must sit inside all day throughout planting and harvest periods without considering how Blackwood households actually functioned.

That did not mean children should remain illiterate.

It meant the schedule had to fit reality while gradually improving it.

Rennick entered the schoolhouse.

Kael followed.

”Would you teach again?”

”No.”

Kael stopped.

Lily, standing behind him, coughed suspiciously.

Kael looked toward Rennick.

”You came all the way here to say no?”

”I came because your messenger asked whether I would inspect the school and discuss whether teaching could return.”

”That sounds like teaching.”

”It sounds like inspecting a school.”

Kael frowned.

Rennick walked toward the faded board.

”My hands shake after too much writing. My hearing is worse. I live with my daughter because climbing my own roof became a foolish hobby.”

”You don’t need to climb the school roof.”

”That is not the point.”

Kael waited.

Rennick turned.

”I can help restart it.”

Different.

”How?”

”Find someone younger to teach most days.”

”Who?”

”That is what we determine.”

Kael looked toward Lily.

She smiled.

Rennick continued, ”I can teach a few days each week at first. Train someone else. Help choose books. Help decide what children actually need.”

”Reading.”

”Yes.”

”Writing.”

”Yes.”

”Numbers.”

”Yes.”

”What else?”

Rennick tapped the floor with his stick.

”Useful things.”

Kael smiled.

”Define useful.”

”Enough arithmetic not to be cheated at market. Enough reading to understand a notice or simple contract. Enough writing to keep household records. Basic Imperial geography. Local law appropriate to age. Measures and weights. Seasons. Crop accounts if their families farm. Letters.”

Kael’s expression changed.

Letters.

People communicating with family.

Soldiers writing home.

Merchants keeping accounts.

Adventurers reading contracts.

This was not abstract education.

It connected to everything Blackwood was building.

Rennick looked toward him.

”And before you ask, no, they do not need sword training in school.”

”I wasn’t going to.”

”You look like the kind of prince who might.”

Kael stared.

Lily looked away.

He was surrounded by hostile elderly administrators.

Rennick inspected the remaining books.

”The other problem is teachers.”

Kael nodded.

”We identified several literate adults.”

”Literate does not mean able to teach.”

”I know.”

”Good.”

The old teacher turned.

”If you want this school operating, bring me the people willing to teach or assist. I will evaluate them.”

Kael smiled.

”You said you weren’t teaching.”

”I said I would not return as the full-time schoolmaster.”

”That sounds like work.”

”It is.”

”Paid work.”

Rennick stared at him.

”Yes.”

Kael nodded.

”Good.”

The System appeared.

[Oakridge Education Restoration — Assessment Updated]

School structure: Repairable

Experienced teacher resource: Master Rennick

Full-time teacher availability: NO

Training / supervisory availability: POSSIBLE

Potential assistant instructors identified through literacy records: 3

Recommended next step: Instructor evaluation + seasonal attendance survey

Kael looked toward the old classroom.

Not open tomorrow.

Good.

They needed repairs.

Teacher candidates.

Student counts.

Schedules.

Materials.

And a budget.

Rennick looked toward him.

”You’re smiling.”

”I think this can work.”

”That depends.”

”On?”

”Whether you want a school or a building called a school.”

Kael’s smile faded.

Rennick continued, ”A building is easy. Fix roof. Replace stove. Put children inside. Declare success.”

Kael nodded slowly.

”A school requires someone capable of teaching every week. Books that survive more than one season. Families who believe sending children is worth losing some labor hours. A schedule people can actually follow.”

Kael looked toward Lily.

She was writing nearly every word.

Rennick noticed.

”Good.”

Kael laughed.

The old teacher might be worse than Edwin.

He definitely liked him.

They approved only the repairs necessary to make the building safe and prevent further deterioration. Master Rennick would return after two days with his daughter’s permission to remain in Oakridge temporarily for instructor evaluations.

Apparently his daughter had authority he respected more than princes.

Kael decided not to challenge that.

The second settlement household moved fully into Bellhaven that afternoon.

The wheelwright’s family had finished the worst of the roof repair and transferred their belongings into the previously vacant house. Edrin Pell had already brought over two damaged wagon wheels from nearby farms to see whether the newcomer could repair them properly.

Kael deliberately did not travel there to watch.

Lily noticed.

”You are not going?”

”No.”

”Why?”

”He does not need a prince standing over his first wagon wheel.”

She smiled.

”Growth.”

”Everyone needs to stop saying that.”

Instead, Kael requested a normal settlement report after several days.

The household needed time to live.

Not perform success for him.

The third newcomer family remained near the manor settlement. The husband’s work handling wagons had become regular enough that Edwin now considered the employment reasonably stable in the short term. His wife continued temporary clerical work and had been asked whether she wanted a longer placement.

Housing remained the problem.

The System showed:

[Controlled Settlement Pilot — Household 3]

Employment stability: Improving

Housing stability: Temporary

Permanent placement readiness: Moderate

Household preference: Manor settlement / nearby

Recommendation: Do not force village placement solely because village housing is available

Kael nodded.

They wanted to stay near the manor.

That was information too.

Blackwood’s settlement policy could not become a scheme for scattering newcomers wherever Kael believed the map needed more people.

If employment, housing, and services could support them near the manor, their preference mattered.

The problem remained housing.

So they would measure that.

Not solve it tonight.

Late in the afternoon, the Guild received a message from Rellan Dorr.

The runner came from a western village along the caravan route.

No emergency.

No injuries.

One wagon had developed a damaged wheel rim during the rain. The caravan had stopped for several hours while repairs were made. Rellan’s party remained with the wagons rather than pushing ahead to maintain schedule.

Estimated return had shifted by half a day.

The merchant complained.

Of course.

Kael read the copied message at the Guild Counter while Nalia prepared the contract update.

”Does that count against them?”

”No,” she said.

”Contract deadline?”

”Delivery window permits weather and mechanical delay if documented.”

”And if they return late?”

”We check why.”

Galahad joined them.

”Do not start solving hypothetical disputes before the caravan exists in front of us.”

Kael smiled.

”I was asking.”

”You ask toward solutions.”

”That is usually useful.”

”Usually.”

The System recorded the update.

[D-Rank Caravan Escort — Status Update]

Party: Rellan Dorr + 4

Personnel injuries: None reported

Caravan losses: None reported

Delay: Mechanical / weather-related

Contract status: Active

Current concern: Low

No crisis.

Just a broken wheel.

The Guild’s first multi-day D-rank contract continued.

Kael found that satisfying.

By closing, the first day of the Guild’s second week ended almost exactly like the days before it.

Mira locked the registry.

Nalia and another clerk reconciled reward deposits.

The Commons staff cleared dishes.

The Quest Board was updated for morning.

One adventurer complained that a roof-repair contract paid too little and another accepted it before he finished complaining.

Galahad reviewed the final ledger.

Kael waited.

”Are you going to tell me?”

Galahad looked up.

”Tell you what?”

”The numbers.”

”You have become Edwin.”

”That is insulting.”

”Fifty-four registered.”

Kael leaned against the counter.

”Placements?”

”Thirty-four confirmed. Twenty-one F. Twelve E. One D.”

”Completed contracts?”

”Sixteen.”

”Problems?”

”Nothing requiring House involvement.”

Kael smiled.

The System appeared.

[Blackwood Adventurers’ Guild — Day 8 Summary]

Registered Adventurers: 54

Confirmed Rank Placements:

F-Rank: 21

E-Rank: 12

D-Rank: 1

C-Rank and Above: 0

Active Contracts: 11

Completed Contracts: 16

Properly Withdrawn: 1

Weather-delayed contracts: Resolving

Guild Relief Reserve: Active

First Week Review: Complete

Operational Status: Stable

Then another notice appeared.

[Recommended next institutional review: Day 14]

Kael dismissed it.

A week.

That seemed appropriate.

He had no reason to stand in this room every evening reading the same healthy numbers.

Galahad closed the ledger.

”You know you do not have to visit every day.”

Kael looked toward him.

”I know.”

”Do you?”

”Yes.”

Galahad waited.

Kael sighed.

”I’ll come less.”

Mira looked up from the locked registry.

”Good.”

Kael stared.

Nalia laughed.

”The Guild is throwing me out.”

”The Guild is operating,” Galahad corrected.

That was better.

Kael looked around the hall one more time.

Eight days ago, he had stood outside while the institution received its name.

Now the front desk belonged to Mira and Nalia more than it ever had to him. Galahad made daily operational decisions without asking permission. Adventurers formed parties in the Commons without Kael knowing their names. Contracts appeared, changed status, completed, failed, delayed, and paid while he worked elsewhere.

The Blackwood Adventurers’ Guild was becoming something Kael had built precisely so he would not have to run it.

That was success of a different kind.

Outside, evening covered Blackwood.

Oakridge’s schoolhouse had a retired teacher willing to help rebuild more than its roof.

Bellhaven’s newest household was beginning wagon repairs.

Another family had started making Oakridge home.

Stonebrook’s construction crews would return to the five houses when the ground dried.

The Population & Labor Analysis continued finding ways to use skills without stripping workers from the farms that fed the territory.

Rellan’s party remained on the western road.

Damien remained somewhere farther east, traveling toward a frontier he had chosen for himself.

Nothing waited for Kael to finish one story before starting another.

He walked toward the manor while the Guild continued behind him, its windows bright against the darkening road. For the first time since opening day, Kael did not turn around to check whether the doors were closing properly.

He trusted Galahad to close them.

And tomorrow morning, he trusted someone else to open them again.
