The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

By the fourth morning, the Blackwood Adventurers’ Guild had developed a problem Galahad considered healthy.

There were too many people standing in front of the Quest Board.

Not because Blackwood suddenly possessed dozens of dangerous monsters waiting to be slain, but because adventurers had begun learning that the board changed throughout the day. A contract available at sunrise might be gone by midday. A merchant request delayed for verification might appear after lunch. A gathering job could be reclassified if new information changed its expected risk. Some adventurers had therefore developed the habit of checking the board repeatedly, which meant the open space before it had become a gathering point instead of a passageway.

Kael discovered this when he entered the Guild and found six people blocking the route from the front doors to the Commons.

Galahad was already dealing with it.

”Move.”

Nobody moved quickly enough.

Galahad pointed toward the floor. ”You see the darker boards?”

Several adventurers looked down.

A wide strip of dark timber crossed the floor several paces away from the Quest Board.

”That is where you stand if you are discussing a contract. You approach the board, read what you need, then move back. The Guild Hall has an entire Commons. I did not build one so twenty people could hold a meeting in front of the door.”

One of the F-rank adventurers stepped backward.

Another remained.

”I’m deciding.”

”You have been deciding for fifteen minutes.”

”It is a serious choice.”

”It is an F-rank mushroom-gathering contract.”

”Some mushrooms are dangerous.”

Galahad stared at him.

Kael covered his mouth.

The adventurer finally moved.

Galahad turned toward Kael. ”Do not.”

”I said nothing.”

”You are smiling.”

”I am enjoying administration.”

”That may be worse.”

The front of the Guild looked noticeably different from opening day now that people understood where they were supposed to go. The long oak Registry and Contract Counter remained the first place most visitors encountered after entering. Mira Doss worked the registration half beneath a carved sign identifying REGISTRY, PARTY RECORDS, AND RANKS, while Nalia Greve’s side carried the simpler heading CONTRACTS, DEPOSITS, AND PAYMENT. The signs had been added after two days of visitors asking whichever woman happened to be closest regardless of what they needed.

It had helped.

Mostly.

A man stood in front of Mira now attempting to post a contract.

”You want Nalia,” Mira said.

He looked three steps to his right.

Nalia raised a hand.

The man walked over.

Kael smiled.

Mira looked at him. ”Do not say anything.”

”I wasn’t going to.”

”Good.”

Behind them, the Quest Board remained the visual heart of the public hall. F-rank requests occupied the largest section because they were the most numerous and turned over quickly. E-rank contracts were increasing, while D-rank remained sparse. C, B, and A were empty this morning. The carved S designation sat above a section with no ordinary posting space at all, a reminder that whatever eventually deserved that rank would not arrive by a villager casually pinning a parchment to a board.

The D-rank caravan escort from yesterday had moved.

Kael immediately noticed.

”Rellan took it?”

Galahad nodded toward the Active Contracts section.

The posting now carried a red-bordered slip listing the registered party.

Party Leader: Rellan Dorr — D-Rank

Additional Members: 4

Two E-ranks.

Two F-ranks.

Departure tomorrow morning.

The merchant had agreed to increase the reward after Rellan requested a fifth party member.

Kael read the revised amount. ”He agreed?”

”He complained first.”

”Naturally.”

”Then Nalia asked whether he preferred paying twenty more silver or reducing the number of wagons.”

Kael looked toward Nalia.

She was currently explaining to an elderly woman that the Guild did, in fact, accept contracts involving missing goats.

”She is becoming dangerous,” Kael said.

Galahad nodded. ”Useful.”

The System appeared.

[Blackwood Adventurers’ Guild — Day 4]

Registered Adventurers: 39

Confirmed Rank Placements: 24

F-Rank: 15

E-Rank: 8

D-Rank: 1

C-Rank and Above: 0

Active Contracts: 10

Completed Contracts: 6

Properly Withdrawn: 1

Formal Disciplinary Cases: 1

Operational Status: Stable

Five new registrations since yesterday.

Kael dismissed the window and looked toward the Commons, where the increase was easier to understand than it was on a System panel. More adventurers meant more tables occupied, more people asking about parties, more equipment leaning against walls, and more voices trying to decide which contracts were worth splitting among three or four people.

The Commons was beginning to develop unofficial territories.

Hunters favored the tables nearest the windows.

Caravan guards preferred the side closer to the entrance and stable yard.

Newer adventurers clustered near the Quest Board because they were afraid someone else would take work while they were eating.

Milo had apparently decided one table belonged to him despite not being a Guild adventurer at all.

Kael found him there with three bowls.

”You have three meals.”

Milo looked up. ”One is not mine.”

”Whose?”

Milo looked around.

”No idea.”

Kael stared.

Milo pushed one bowl away. ”Then two.”

Across the room, Sera Venn sat with Reysa Tal and the three F-rank adventurers who had accompanied her on yesterday’s E-rank tracking contract. Their return was apparently the reason Galahad had sent Sera into the Commons instead of allowing everyone to scatter after reporting.

Kael approached.

Reysa looked tired but uninjured.

The F-rank man who had previously wanted to chase anything he encountered looked less enthusiastic than he had the day before.

That interested Kael.

Galahad joined them carrying the contract record.

”Report.”

Reysa placed a small wrapped object on the table.

Inside was a clump of coarse brown fur caught on a broken branch.

”We found the tracks approximately two miles east of the farm mentioned in the contract. Four-toed front impression. Larger rear print. Claw marks visible. We followed for perhaps half a mile.”

”How old?”

”Some from yesterday. Some older.”

”Single creature?”

”We think so.”

”You think.”

”Yes.”

Good.

No false certainty.

”What happened after half a mile?”

The younger F-rank man spoke before Reysa could.

”We found where it killed a deer.”

Kael looked toward him.

He swallowed.

”Not ate. Killed.”

Reysa corrected him. ”Partly consumed. Most of the carcass remained.”

Galahad nodded. ”Size?”

”Large enough that I ended the contract.”

The young man looked toward her.

He still did not seem entirely happy about that decision.

Galahad noticed.

”Problem?”

The F-rank adventurer hesitated. ”We never saw it.”

”That was not the question.”

”I thought we could keep tracking.”

Reysa folded her arms.

Galahad looked toward him. ”Why didn’t you?”

”Because she ordered us back.”

”And now?”

He glanced toward the fur.

”Now I think she was right.”

Galahad waited.

The young man sighed. ”The deer had been dragged almost thirty paces uphill.”

That changed things.

Sera spoke for the first time.

”And the claw marks?”

Reysa pushed forward a rubbing taken from a tree.

Sera examined it.

”Too large for the ordinary predators around the eastern farms.”

”Magical?” Kael asked.

Sera shook her head. ”Unknown.”

Galahad looked toward Kael.

He understood.

Unknown remained unknown.

The contract had been to identify and assess tracks, not hunt whatever made them.

Reysa had completed the work.

The Guild now possessed better information than it had yesterday.

That did not automatically mean Black Dragons needed to deploy.

Galahad looked toward Sera. ”Your recommendation?”

”Experienced scout verifies the area from distance. No hunting party yet.”

”Guild?”

”Could be. D-rank or higher if we had enough people.”

Kael looked toward Rellan’s contract on the board.

They had one D-rank, and he was preparing to escort a caravan.

Galahad understood the same thing.

”We do not have the personnel.”

Sera nodded. ”Then Black Dragon scout.”

Kael looked toward her.

This was where the institutional boundary mattered.

The Guild had encountered something potentially beyond its current capacity. It did not need to pretend otherwise merely to protect its reputation.

Galahad sent a runner for Grom.

The System appeared.

[Contract Outcome Review]

Contract Rank: E

Objective: Track assessment

Outcome: Successful

Target identification: Incomplete

New risk information: Significant

Party withdrawal: Appropriate

Contract escalation recommended: YES

Kael focused on the final line.

Not attack.

Escalation.

The Guild had done exactly what it was supposed to do.

When Grom arrived, Galahad gave him the original report, Reysa’s field notes, the fur sample, and Sera’s assessment.

The Deputy Commander read everything before asking questions.

”How far from the nearest households?”

Reysa answered.

”Tracks toward or away from farms?”

”Mostly parallel. One trail approached the edge of pasture, then turned east.”

”Any missing livestock?”

”Not from the farm we checked.”

Grom looked toward Sera.

”You think scout?”

”Yes.”

”Iris is back.”

Kael said nothing.

Good.

Grom made the decision.

”I’ll send Iris and one other Black Dragon. Observation only unless civilians are in immediate danger. If they identify something appropriate for Guild work, it comes back to Galahad. If it is a military-level threat, it remains ours.”

Galahad nodded.

The handoff took less than two minutes.

No argument over prestige.

No adventurer demanding the right to kill whatever was out there because they had discovered it first.

Kael liked that more than he expected.

The System updated.

[Institutional Coordination Event]

Guild identified risk beyond current verified capacity.

Military authority accepted follow-up assessment.

Jurisdictional transfer: Clean

Information continuity: Preserved

Outcome pending

Kael looked toward Reysa.

”You completed the contract.”

She nodded.

Nalia arrived with the payment record.

The farmer who had posted the tracking request had already deposited the reward. Because the party fulfilled the stated objective—determine the nature and direction of the tracks without unnecessary engagement—the reward was payable despite the creature remaining unidentified.

The younger F-rank member looked surprised.

”You still get paid when you don’t kill it?”

Nalia looked at him. ”Was the contract to kill it?”

”No.”

”Then why would killing it determine payment?”

He glanced at Reysa.

She smiled.

Another lesson.

Kael suspected the Guild would produce thousands of them.

The party received its reward. Reysa’s share was larger because she had accepted responsibility as leader, though the distribution had been agreed before departure and entered into the party record. The three F-rank adventurers received their smaller shares without complaint.

Mostly.

Galahad stopped the young man before he left.

”You wanted to continue.”

”Yes.”

”Why?”

The answer took longer this time.

”To prove we could.”

”Could what?”

”Handle it.”

”Did you know what it was?”

”No.”

”Then what exactly were you proving?”

The young adventurer looked down.

Galahad tapped his F-rank badge.

”This does not say you are weak. It says the Guild has limited proof of what you can reliably do. The fastest way to convince me you deserve more responsibility is not to survive something stupid.”

The man nodded.

Galahad let him leave.

Kael looked toward the retreating group.

”That should be part of advancement.”

”It is.”

”No, specifically that.”

”Listening?”

”Judgment changing after experience.”

Galahad considered.

”That is harder to record.”

”Harder does not mean useless.”

”No.”

Mira, who had been close enough to hear, spoke from behind the counter.

”I can add evaluator notes.”

Galahad looked toward her.

”Short ones.”

”I know.”

”No essays.”

Mira looked offended.

Kael laughed.

The morning became busier after that.

Two contracts were completed before midday. One involved clearing burrowing animals from an orchard without destroying the root systems the client wanted protected. The F-rank pair assigned to it succeeded by flooding one tunnel and digging another section by hand rather than setting fire to the entire mound, which apparently had been one applicant’s original suggestion.

Nalia refused to place a different request on the Quest Board at all.

Kael noticed because the client became loud.

”You are refusing lawful business!”

”I am refusing to post a bounty on a man you say owes you money.”

”He stole from me.”

”Do you have a judgment from the village head or House authority?”

”No.”

”Witnesses?”

”He knows what he did.”

”That is not a witness.”

The merchant slapped one palm against the counter.

Galahad looked up from across the hall.

The Guild security guard moved closer.

Nalia did not flinch.

”If you believe he stole from you, report the theft to lawful authority. If you are owed a debt, use the proper claim process. The Guild does not send armed adventurers to collect disputed money.”

”What use are you, then?”

Nalia pushed the contract back.

”For work that belongs to us.”

The man snatched the parchment and left.

Kael waited until the door closed.

”Nalia.”

She looked toward him.

”Good.”

”Thank you.”

Then she returned immediately to the next client.

No celebration.

No need.

The rules were becoming ordinary.

That mattered more.

The System appeared briefly.

[Guild Jurisdictional Compliance: Stable]

Private debt enforcement requests rejected: 1

Unverified criminal bounty requests rejected: 1

Military escalation transfers: 1

Advisory: Clear refusals reduce future jurisdictional confusion.

Kael dismissed it.

He spent the next hour in the Infirmary.

Not because someone was dying.

Because Healer Vessa had demanded Galahad come look at the supply ledger, and Galahad had responded by bringing Kael with him out of spite.

The Guild Infirmary looked more used than it had two days earlier. Clean cloth was drying on a rack near the rear window. Several jars of salve had moved from storage to the working shelves. One narrow recovery bed remained occupied by Corren, whose ankle was now less swollen but whose patience had deteriorated considerably.

”I can walk.”

Vessa did not look at him. ”You can limp.”

”That is walking.”

”That is walking badly.”

Kael smiled.

Corren glared at him.

”You’re enjoying this.”

”A little.”

Vessa dropped the supply ledger onto the table before Galahad.

”We used more bandages in four days than your estimate for a week.”

Galahad frowned.

”How?”

”Training yard.”

Kael turned.

”Not contracts?”

”Mostly assessments. Scraped hands, bruised knuckles, one split lip, one fool who grabbed the wrong part of a practice spear when it broke.”

Galahad opened the ledger.

”That means assessment injuries belong in the Guild operating cost, not contract relief.”

”Yes.”

Vessa pointed toward another column.

”Contract injuries separate.”

Only Corren’s ankle so far.

Good.

Kael looked through the supplies.

”Anything dangerous?”

”No.”

”Shortages?”

”Not yet.”

”Then?”

”I am telling you before there is one.”

Kael nodded.

That was exactly how this was supposed to work.

Vessa continued, ”If registration keeps increasing, assessments increase. If assessments increase, small injuries increase. I need a predictable resupply schedule instead of sending someone running to the clinic whenever we run low.”

Galahad nodded.

”Weekly count?”

”Twice weekly for the first month.”

”Done.”

The System updated.

[Guild Infirmary Procedure Improved]

Supply reporting cycle established

Assessment injuries separated from contract injuries

Contract injury reserve data quality improved

Kael looked toward Galahad.

”What about the relief fund draft?”

”Tonight.”

Vessa raised an eyebrow. ”What relief fund?”

Galahad sighed.

Kael smiled.

”You did not tell the healer?”

”I was drafting it before asking her what it should cover.”

Vessa folded her arms.

”That sounds backwards.”

”It is why the draft is not final.”

Kael decided to enjoy someone else being criticized for once.

The proposed fund remained modest. Brokerage revenue would not immediately support pensions, expensive prosthetics, or lifelong disability payments. Blackwood simply did not have the money or data to promise such things responsibly. Instead, Galahad proposed beginning with a Guild Relief Reserve funded from a fixed portion of Guild operating surplus once ordinary costs were met.

Its initial purposes would be limited: emergency treatment not covered by basic Infirmary operations, reasonable burial expenses for a member killed during a registered contract, and assistance returning remains to family where practical.

Vessa read the draft.

”Add recovery transport.”

Galahad looked toward her.

”If someone breaks a leg twelve miles away and survives, getting them back here can cost more than the first treatment.”

Kael nodded immediately.

Galahad added it.

Vessa continued, ”And do not promise prosthetics yet.”

Kael looked surprised.

”That was one of the future ideas.”

”Then keep it future.”

Galahad smiled at him.

Kael frowned. ”Everyone is against me.”

”No,” Vessa replied. ”We are against promises made before coin exists.”

That sounded like Edwin too.

The System appeared.

[Guild Relief Reserve — Draft Framework]

Potential initial coverage:

Emergency contract-related medical support

Recovery transport

Burial assistance

Return of remains where practical

Funding model: Portion of verified Guild operating surplus

Warning: Do not guarantee benefits beyond sustainable reserves

Kael approved the direction but not final implementation.

They needed actual revenue data first.

Four days of brokerage fees were not enough to know what the Guild could sustain.

That felt frustratingly reasonable.

Shortly after midday, Kael left for the two villages that remained incomplete on the settlement-capacity assessment.

He did not visit both.

That would have meant rushing.

Instead, he traveled to the closer of the two with Edwin, Bram, and Halric Denne. The settlement was smaller than Bellhaven and less economically specialized than Stonebrook. Most households farmed, kept livestock, or performed basic local crafts. Its road was usable in dry weather and unreliable during heavy rain, but not yet one of Blackwood’s worst. Housing capacity appeared moderate.

Water was the missing question.

The village used two shallow wells and a spring-fed trough that also served livestock.

That arrangement worked now.

It might not work if several new households arrived.

Bram stood beside the spring while two villagers explained how its flow changed during late summer.

”Ever gone dry?”

”No.”

”Low?”

”Yes.”

”How low?”

The older farmer held his hand approximately a foot above the trough bottom.

Bram frowned.

”Measured?”

The man laughed.

”With what?”

Fair.

Kael looked toward Halric.

”Can we measure flow without making this complicated?”

”Yes.”

”How?”

”A marked vessel and time.”

Simple.

Good.

No magical instrument required.

The System remained stubborn.

[Settlement Capacity Assessment]

Housing: Moderate

Agricultural land: Moderate

Employment diversification: Low

Road access: Seasonal weakness

Water capacity: Insufficient Data

Settlement intake recommendation: Pending

Kael smiled.

”Still no.”

Edwin glanced toward him. ”The survey?”

”Water.”

”Then measure it.”

That was exactly what they did.

No new well.

No settlement promise.

No proclamation.

They established a simple flow check and asked the village to repeat it at several points during the day and again after weather changes. Household use would be estimated separately from livestock demand.

The final village had a different missing category: seasonal labor.

Its harvest relied heavily on relatives returning from other parts of Blackwood for several weeks each year. On paper, several working-age residents appeared available for new employment. In reality, pulling them permanently into another industry might create a harvest shortage later.

Kael did not need to visit to understand the warning.

The census had found people.

Now Blackwood was learning that a person listed as a farmer, laborer, or available apprentice could occupy several roles depending on the season.

The System updated.

[Labor Analysis Refinement]

Permanent labor availability and seasonal labor availability must be separated.

Risk: Reassigning seasonal agricultural labor may create delayed food-production shortages.

Kael looked toward Edwin.

”Every answer creates another question.”

”Yes.”

”Does that ever stop?”

”No.”

Kael sighed.

Bram laughed.

Back at the manor, the farming family participating in the settlement pilot had returned from Oakridge.

Kael found them with Lily.

The father looked more animated than he had since arriving in Blackwood.

”We like it.”

”Oakridge?”

”Yes.”

”The house?”

”There are two possibilities.”

Lily corrected him. ”One suitable immediately. One requiring repairs.”

Kael nodded.

”Land?”

The man smiled.

”Enough.”

”Work?”

”Farm work now. Mill needs wagon hauling sometimes. I spoke with Tomas Pell.”

That was promising.

His wife had apparently spoken with several Oakridge women about poultry, garden plots, and whether there was enough local demand for eggs beyond what households already produced.

Kael looked toward Lily.

”They did their own investigation.”

”Yes.”

Good.

Kael turned back to the family.

”Do you want to move there?”

The parents looked at each other before the mother answered.

”We want to try.”

Try.

Not swear eternal loyalty.

Not declare Oakridge perfect.

Try.

Kael nodded.

”Then we begin placement.”

Lily pulled out the paperwork.

The father looked toward Kael.

”Do we owe House Kael for the land?”

”Depends on the arrangement you choose.”

Kael looked toward Edwin.

The steward stepped in before he accidentally invented land law in the hallway.

”The available plot is under existing Blackwood tenancy rules. You will receive the same terms as comparable local households, not special obligations because you arrived through the settlement pilot. House-supported repairs to an unused residence will be recorded separately and will not turn into hidden labor debt.”

The woman visibly relaxed.

Kael noticed.

So did Lily.

The System appeared.

[Controlled Settlement Pilot — Household 1]

Preferred settlement: Oakridge

Housing: Available

Livelihood: Agriculture + poultry

Local employment integration: Moderate

Household consent: Confirmed

Village acceptance: Confirmed

Permanent placement initiated

Two of the three initial families now had destinations.

The third remained unresolved.

Kael preferred that to forcing a complete record.

That evening, the Guild produced another first.

Not a monster.

Not a promotion.

A funeral question.

No one had died.

That was important.

The question came from Nalia during the closing ledger review because she had been helping Galahad calculate what portion of brokerage fees could eventually enter the Relief Reserve.

”If someone dies outside Blackwood on a lawful Guild contract, who pays to bring them back?”

The room quieted.

Mira stopped writing.

Galahad looked toward Darius, who had entered several minutes earlier with Grom after receiving Iris’s preliminary scouting report.

Darius answered carefully.

”If the contract is Guild work and recovery is possible without creating unreasonable danger, the Guild should arrange recovery.”

”And if recovery would require soldiers?” Nalia asked.

”Then the Guild requests assistance. That does not mean the Black Dragon automatically deploys.”

Grom nodded.

”We evaluate the situation.”

Nalia looked toward Kael.

”What if the body is across another territory’s border?”

There it was.

The border problem.

Kael leaned back.

”Then the Guild cannot simply send an armed recovery party wherever it wants.”

Galahad nodded.

”Correct.”

Nalia frowned. ”Even to recover one of ours?”

”Especially then,” Darius said. ”Intent does not erase another lord’s authority.”

Kael looked toward the map on the wall.

The Blackwood Adventurers’ Guild existed inside Blackwood.

Its contracts could currently operate where House Kael had lawful authority or where specific permission had been granted. That did not mean a Guild badge became a passport through the Empire, much less through a foreign kingdom.

Galahad looked around the table.

”We need that written before anyone takes a contract outside Blackwood.”

Kael nodded.

”Within Blackwood, ordinary approved travel is fine.”

”Yes.”

”Another Imperial territory?”

”Permission or a recognized agreement with the relevant authority.”

”Foreign kingdom?”

”Explicit authorization. No assumptions.”

Grom added, ”An armed party crossing a border without permission is not made harmless because they call themselves adventurers.”

Mira had already begun writing.

The System appeared.

[Guild Territorial Jurisdiction Principle Recorded]

Blackwood Adventurers’ Guild authority is territorial, not sovereign.

Guild registration does not independently grant border-crossing authority.

Cross-territorial Imperial contracts require authorization or recognized agreement.

Foreign operations require explicit lawful permission.

High adventurer rank does not override territorial law.

Kael focused on the last line.

Good.

S-rank would not become an excuse for idiocy later.

Galahad looked toward him. ”You like that one.”

”Yes.”

”So do I.”

Darius shifted the conversation back to the eastern tracks.

”Iris found signs.”

Kael looked toward him.

The room quieted again.

”Dangerous?”

”Potentially.”

”What?”

”Still unconfirmed.”

Grom placed the scout report on the table.

”Iris believes the animal is solitary. Large. Strong enough to drag prey considerable distance. She found no evidence of a den near the farms and no pattern of livestock predation.”

Kael read the report.

”Magical?”

”Possibly. Not enough evidence.”

”Immediate threat?”

”No.”

Galahad looked toward Grom.

”Guild contract?”

”Not yet.”

That was important.

Grom continued, ”We will watch the area for several days. If it begins approaching farms or roads, we reassess. If we identify it and the threat falls within appropriate Guild capability, it can return to your board.”

Galahad nodded.

No adventure today.

No dramatic hunt because readers needed a fight.

Just observation.

The System recorded:

[Escalated Threat Review]

Current classification: Unknown large predator

Immediate civilian danger: Low

Military action: Not warranted

Guild hunting contract: Not warranted

Monitoring: Active

Kael smiled.

Sometimes the correct response to a dangerous animal was to leave it alone.

The day’s Guild ledger followed.

[Blackwood Adventurers’ Guild — Day 4 Summary]

Registered Adventurers: 39

Confirmed Rank Placements:

F-Rank: 15

E-Rank: 8

D-Rank: 1

C-Rank and Above: 0

Active Contracts: 10

Completed Contracts: 6

Properly Withdrawn: 1

Formal Disciplinary Cases: 1

Guild Infirmary Cases: 1 contract injury / minor assessment injuries recorded separately

Brokerage Revenue: Positive

Guild Relief Reserve: Drafting

Harvester Capacity: Absent

Operational Status: Stable

Then the House objective appeared.

[Know Your People]

Territorial household census: COMPLETE

Major labor shortages: IDENTIFIED

Underused skills / apprenticeship opportunities: IDENTIFIED

Settlement-capacity assessments: 10 / 11 sufficient

Final assessment awaiting water verification

Objective completion: 97%

Kael stared at the number.

Ninety-seven.

One village.

One water measurement.

Then Blackwood would finally possess enough information for the System to unlock the Population and Labor Analysis function promised when the objective began.

He almost wanted to send someone running back immediately.

Almost.

Edwin noticed his expression.

”No.”

Kael looked toward him.

”I did not say anything.”

”You are considering making someone measure a spring after dark.”

”I was not.”

Lily looked at him.

Kael sighed.

”Not seriously.”

”Tomorrow,” Edwin said.

”Tomorrow.”

The final System line appeared afterward.

[Damien Ravenmoor Frontier Departure: 2 days]

The Guild report suddenly mattered less.

Kael dismissed the interface.

Damien had spent most of the day with Grom and Darius completing final preparations rather than assisting at the Guild. His equipment was ready. His travel documents were ready. His Black Dragon authorization was ready. His legal status remained exactly what they had established: he had passed the Imperial Knight Examination, had not undergone Church consecration, and therefore traveled not as Sir Damien Ravenmoor but as a Black Dragon soldier under temporary frontier evaluation authority.

Two days.

Kael found him outside the Black Dragon barracks after sunset.

Damien sat on a low wall cleaning his spearhead even though Kael knew perfectly well Garrick had already inspected the weapon.

”You’re cleaning something that is clean.”

Damien looked up. ”I know.”

”Nervous?”

”No.”

Kael waited.

Damien sighed.

”Yes.”

Kael sat beside him.

For a while, neither spoke.

The Guild’s lights were visible in the distance. A few adventurers still occupied the Commons even though the public counters had closed. Somewhere closer to the barracks, Grom was correcting a night patrol assignment while Darius spoke with Jessa about the next morning’s watch rotation.

Blackwood kept moving.

Damien turned the spearhead in his hands.

”You know what I keep thinking about?”

”What?”

”What if I come back and everyone is different?”

Kael smiled faintly.

”Six months is not six years.”

”That is easy for the person staying here.”

”Fair.”

Damien looked toward the Guild.

”There will probably be C-ranks by then.”

”Maybe.”

”More houses.”

”Hopefully.”

”New people.”

”Yes.”

”Maybe the road finally stops trying to kill wagons.”

”Do not become unrealistic.”

Damien laughed.

Then his expression settled.

”I want it to change.”

Kael looked toward him.

”That’s the strange part. I don’t want to come back and find everything exactly as I left it. That would mean nothing happened while I was gone.”

Kael nodded slowly.

”But?”

”I still want there to be a place for me when I return.”

There it was.

Not fear of Greywatch.

Not fear of the frontier evaluation.

Something quieter.

Kael looked toward the Black Dragon barracks.

”You are one of the original fifty.”

Damien smiled. ”That sounds like something people say before replacing you.”

Kael laughed.

Then he became serious.

”You passing the Knight Examination did not make you stop being Black Dragon. Going to the frontier will not either. Coming back with different ideas will not.”

Damien looked down at the spear.

”And if I decide I want consecration after?”

”Then we handle it.”

”And if I don’t?”

Kael considered.

”Then you don’t.”

Damien looked toward him.

Kael continued, ”You already proved you could pass the Examination. Consecration means something different. I’m not going to turn it into a punishment because you needed time to decide what it means to you.”

Damien nodded.

Neither spoke for several moments.

Then Damien held up the spearhead.

”Still think it needs cleaning?”

”Yes.”

Damien stared.

Kael smiled.

”You missed a spot.”

”You are lying.”

”Probably.”

Damien shoved his shoulder.

Kael nearly fell from the wall.

They both laughed.

Tomorrow the Blackwood Adventurers’ Guild would open for its fifth ordinary day. One village’s water measurement might finally complete the first full territorial population-and-labor objective. Oakridge would begin preparing a home for another newcomer family. Rellan’s D-rank party would depart with the merchant caravan. Mira and Nalia would stand behind the oak counter while Galahad found new reasons to dislike adventurers standing in the wrong place.

Nothing about the next day promised to be legendary.

For Blackwood, that was becoming a strength.

And in two days, one of its own would leave to discover what he became somewhere else.
