The Comeback of the Cannon-Fodder Supporting Actress

”So what can we do?”

Xiao Zhe really had no solution: ”They’re already married, we can’t exactly make them get divorced, can we?”

”Exactly.” Li Wanping clapped her hands. ”We just find the old man another woman, isn’t that the way? Look at how many years of feelings there are between Xiao Tong and Fu Xinhong, and still she couldn’t beat one Bai Meng. We find a young, pretty, sensible woman who knows how to please him, and once the old man is coaxed, that old demon will have no choice but to slink off and give up her place.”

Honestly, that really was a workable idea.

Having gone through Yu Yu, Xiao Zhe knew perfectly well just how effective a honey trap could be.

”Will that work though?” But Xiao Zhe didn’t want to personally do it; he wanted Li Wanping to volunteer to handle the arrangements.

Sure enough, Li Wanping thumped her chest and said, ”It’ll work, it’s definitely going to work. Leave this to me. I’ll do some proper scouting over the next few days.”

While the two were talking, Xiao Zhang came back.

These past few days, Xiao Zhang had been feeling pretty smug.

For Bai Meng, Fu Xinhong had been throwing tantrums at home, practically raising hell, insisting on breaking off the engagement no matter what, which made Xiao Zhang very happy.

He fancied that he’d made Xiao Tong lose face, and seeing Xiao Tong go to the Fu Family every day to curry favor just to avoid having the engagement broken, he became even more convinced that Xiao Tong was madly in love with Fu Xinhong. If Fu Xinhong really broke up with her, Xiao Tong would definitely be devastated. Maybe once she’s that upset, she won’t have much energy left to fight him over the inheritance.

Xiao Zhang came back humming a tune, and when he passed by Xiao Zhe’s bedroom, Li Wanping pulled the door open and called him: ”Xiao Zhang, come in for a second.”

After Xiao Zhang came in, Li Wanping told him about the old man planning to give shares to Anning: ”Xiao Zhang, help Mom think this through. What kind of woman could really captivate the old man?”

That, Xiao Zhang honestly didn’t know.

But with Bai Meng as a precedent, he said, ”Someone like Bai Meng, I guess. After all, Bai Meng managed to enthrall Fu Xinhong so completely he can’t live without her.”

Li Wanping’s eyes lit up. ”Does Bai Meng have any good friends, or any girls similar to her...”

”Sure.” Xiao Zhang suddenly remembered something. ”They say there are people who make a living out of scamming emotions. Once they set their sights on someone, they deliberately get close, trick that person into falling head over heels, then swindle money and sex—anyway... why don’t we find someone like that? Find a man and a woman: let the man go seduce that old demon. Maybe she won’t be able to control herself and cheats first, and then we can kick her out with nothing to her name.”

Even Xiao Zhe got excited by that suggestion.

”Right, if it’s the old man who cheats, that old demon could still get a share of our family’s assets, maybe a huge share. But if she cheats first, then she can only get kicked out with nothing.”

Li Wanping nodded, smiling. ”Then we’ll find that kind of person.”

Xiao Zhe laughed. ”Let me handle this. I’ll make sure to find the most skilled con artist, someone who really understands women’s minds.”

Once they’d settled that matter, Xiao Zhe pushed Li Wanping again: ”Mom, you’d better hurry up with the Xia Man issue. And also, Hu Yushan has been pressing me several times already. She’s really set her sights on Xi Jingchen, and she even said if she can end up with Xi Jingchen, she’ll give me a lot of benefits.”

The rest she could take or leave, but those benefits were very tempting to Li Wanping.

”Alright, I’ll think it over carefully. I’ll definitely help you get what you want.”

In the days that followed, Xiao Tong ran to the Fu Family every single day to keep herself on their radar.

Each time she went over, the Fu couple became even more dissatisfied with Fu Xinhong, while Fu Xinhong became even more sincerely devoted to Bai Meng. Anyway, every time Xiao Tong went to the Fu Family, they would absolutely have a big fight.

And the one who profited from it was Fu Xinjiang.

Fu Xinjiang had already been taken to the company by Mr. Fu to start learning the ropes. After taking Xinjiang along for a while, Mr. Fu discovered that the second son’s talent was no worse than the eldest’s—actually, in many respects, he was better. The younger one was calmer than the elder, handled matters with more finesse; it seemed the second son was actually the qualified heir.

Then, when Fu Xinhong kept clamoring that he had to marry Bai Meng, and Mrs. Fu, in a moment of anger, blurted out that if he married Bai Meng he would no longer be her son, Fu Xinhong actually went off to stay at Bai Meng’s place, making it very clear that if Bai Meng wasn’t let through the Fu Family’s door, then he wouldn’t walk through it either. That was when Mr. Fu finally gave up on Fu Xinhong completely.

After Mr. Fu had already settled on Fu Xinjiang as the heir, Xiao Tong stopped constantly running over to the Fu Family.

A few days later, Xiao Tong went to see Xiao Yuan.

”Grandpa.”

She knocked on the door, and when Xiao Yuan called for her to come in, she pushed it open.

”What is it?” Xiao Yuan looked at Xiao Tong with a cold face.

Xiao Tong said timidly, ”I want to break off the engagement with the Fu Family.”

”Alright.” Xiao Yuan lowered his head and went back to reading his documents. ”I’ll take care of it. You can go out now.”

Xiao Tong still wanted to say something, but Xiao Yuan didn’t give her the chance: ”Go out.”

Xiao Tong had no choice but to withdraw.

Xiao Yuan’s gaze chilled slightly. After he finished reading the documents, he called Mr. Fu: ”Little Fu, are you free tonight? We’ll drop by.”

Mr. Fu already had a pretty good idea what this was about. These past few days, Xiao Tong hadn’t been coming around much, so he knew her heart had cooled toward Fu Xinhong and the Xiao Family was probably going to break off the engagement.

”Sure, tonight I’ll be at home waiting to receive you.”

After saying that, Mr. Fu sighed inwardly. Xiao Tong was such a good girl; it was a pity she had no fate with their Fu Family.

Xiao Yuan hung up and went back to work.

By dusk, Xiao Yuan took Xiao Tong along to the Fu Family.

Mr. Fu had gone home early, and once he was back he asked Mrs. Fu to prepare some refreshments.

Just as they finished setting things out, Xiao Yuan arrived.

Even if the in-law relationship might not work out, Mr. Fu still didn’t want to fall out too badly with the Xiao Family. As soon as he saw Xiao Yuan, he hurried forward to greet him: ”Uncle Xiao, you’re here, and Tongtong too. Please, have a seat.”

Xiao Yuan pulled Xiao Tong down to sit.

Mrs. Fu quickly brought over the refreshments. ”Uncle Xiao, you’re a rare guest. Since you’re here today, you absolutely must stay for dinner tonight.”

Xiao Yuan smiled and waved his hand. ”No need for dinner. The missus at our home is going to cook herself tonight. If I don’t go back, she’ll be upset.”

”Then another day.” Mrs. Fu smiled too. ”If Auntie is personally cooking, of course you have to show your support.”

Xiao Yuan chatted with Mrs. Fu for a bit more, then turned to look at Mr. Fu. ”Little Fu, we’re not here today for anything else, and I won’t beat around the bush. I’ll say it straight: let’s call off the engagement between our two families.”

Mr. Fu had long since been mentally prepared.

He sighed. ”It’s all because my son is useless. He doesn’t know how to cherish a wonderful girl like Tongtong. Our Fu Family has wronged her.”

”Uncle Fu, please don’t say that. I’m just not blessed enough.” Xiao Tong knew how to handle things in public; that one line made a faint smile appear on Mr. Fu’s face.

Xiao Yuan looked at Mr. Fu. ”Even though the engagement’s been broken, the bond between our two families doesn’t change. Our families have been close for generations; your father and I were good friends back then. We can’t let the ties of so many years be wiped out by the youngsters’ affairs. Going forward, everything should go on as usual.”

Mr. Fu let out a huge breath of relief.

He’d been afraid that because of Fu Xinhong’s mess, the Xiao Family would be offended. If the two families became enemies, that would be very bad for the Fu Family.
