Armed Train in the Apocalypse

Chapter 52: Chapter 51: They Want to Harm You!

Liang Kuan strode toward the front of the train, while Su Huan picked up two assault rifles from the ground.

He handed one to Lao San and said solemnly, ”It seems we’ve brought trouble along. If you have any questions, let’s save them for later. Survival is what matters now.”

Lao San looked at the gun offered to him, hesitated for a moment, then snatched it with a grumble, ”Just as I thought, a heartless guy. Not even a bite to eat, yet you want us to risk our lives!”

”I’ll treat you to crab and tofu stew when we get back.”

The train quivered lightly, and Su Huan laughed, turning to walk back, exposing his back carelessly to Lao San’s gun muzzle.

Yu Jing and another quickly followed suit.

The brothers, Boss and Lao Er, hesitated as they looked at Lao San.

”What do we do?”

Lao San replied irritably, ”What do we do? Just risk our lives!”

Su Huan heard footsteps behind him and smirked.

Of course, this was only the first round of testing.

”How many passengers have returned?”

”Fewer by about 120 from the original passengers, but there are plenty of new ones today, a total of 1,002, with more than twelve having engineering undergraduate capabilities. However, two workers died from the heat today.”

Yu Yue behind him immediately picked up the roster and responded.

Su Huan paused in his steps, his heart sinking, ”Died from the heat?!”

”Yes, due to high temperatures.”

Yu Jing chimed in.

Su Huan’s expression fluctuated, realizing this Mojiang City was unlivable, although the first-phase plan for the armed train was still far from complete.

A carriage was lost along the way, eight new ones were added, now totaling forty-nine.

And only fifteen are armored with steel plates.

At least two-thirds still missing!

”How far are the zombies?”

”Less than 500 meters for the smaller scale, over a hundred in number, but I hear zombies within a three-kilometer radius are converging toward us, including in front of the railway.”

”How many?”

Su Huan asked, noticing Yu Yue remained silent for a long time, glancing at her, her face was alarmingly pale and her body slightly trembling, holding onto Yu Jing’s hand for support.

”...At least ten thousand.”

Su Huan gritted his teeth, taking a deep breath, ”As long we get through tonight, we can completely leave this high-temperature zone.”

”If you want to live, hurry up!”

The train door opened, and a wave of heat hit them.

Su Huan felt momentarily suffocated.

He suspected the temperature was up to forty degrees at that moment, but without a thermometer, he couldn’t confirm.

The group quickly took action.

Yu Yue followed behind Su Huan, keeping watch and reporting the zombies’ distance to him.

Yu Jing directed the workers to load various tools and materials onto the train.

Xiaoba opened the rear door and top of the luggage carriage, making it easier for the three brothers to drive the fire engine on board, while the increasingly near growl of zombies alerted even those workers who hadn’t been outside to sense a major incident was happening.

Even though they were dizzy from the heat, none dared to slack off.

Compared to other passengers, they only needed to work to get food, without the risk of going out for resources, already enjoying much better conditions.

Even those who initially felt dissatisfied had a slight sense of superiority watching those former small business owners and white-collar workers struggle every day for a meal.

But it was still too early for new class distinctions to form.

...

The setting sun glowed like blood, with the last orange hue fading through the diamond mesh of the carriage’s bombproof net.

The armed train had been assembled into forty-seven carriages, missing just two dirtied by the zombies.

The train originally carried three carriages worth of zombies, but after being attacked by the Night Demons last time, the carriage doors were broken, and Su Huan worried about issues, so he eliminated them in one go, leaving only one clean one during the journey.

A small portion of zombies was extracted for materials by Wan Xing, while the rest, excessively decayed, were discarded.

Anyway, they weren’t valuable, and when needed, missions could be issued for passengers to catch more.

Hmm, maybe a task system could be set up for that time.

Su Huan thought whimsically.

”A hundred meters left!”

Yu Yue’s voice was rare, slightly sharp.

Su Huan stood at the last carriage, squinting.

”Buzz!”

A searchlight was set up on the roof, with its blinding white beam sweeping across the tracks, a nimble figure leaped onto the railings, scarlet eyes facing the light, slightly expanding.

When both hands were spread, they revealed densely packed eighteen eyes.

As the searchlight swept through, Night Demons leaped onto the railing one by one.

Yet, they didn’t attack the train immediately.

Instead, like soldiers before a great battle, they awaited the signal to charge.

Roaring growls of zombies echoed from all directions, reverberating across this setting sun land.

A metal railing beside them suddenly toppled, the spotlight swept over, exposing two towering Butcher figures, with densely packed heads swarming behind them.

Su Huan glanced at it and immediately turned toward the front carriage.

The armed train beneath his feet issued a slow, rhythmic clunking.

Like the horn for battle.

The terrifying roars of zombies reached a peak at this moment, as the metallic fences around the train, tens of meters long, collapsed with a thunderous crash.

Five Butchers shoved freight cars ahead, crushing forward, while countless ordinary zombies surged beside them, piling towards the train in a relentless wave.

A zombie tide launched its attack on the train!

”Boom—”

A freight car crashed into the last section of the train, shattering the tempered glass into pieces.

A startled cry sounded in front, and the body swayed to the side.

Su Huan caught the stumbling Yu Yue with one hand, raising his right hand to shield against flying glass shards, with his feet rooted firmly without a single wobble, steadily marching forward.

Sharp, explosive noises filled the air incessantly.

Above, sharp claws occasionally pierced through the thin iron sheets of the green train carriage.

Su Huan infused energy into the train beneath his feet, activating the hydrogen-powered carriage sandwiched within the armed train.

With the added kinetic support, the previously sluggish train carriages suddenly picked up speed.

The Night Demons and ordinary zombies attempting to infiltrate the carriages were mostly flung out instantly.

Yet more congested from either side of the tracks.

Su Huan moved steadily, the compact Hummingbird-9 submachine gun in his hand spitting out bursts of three armor-piercing rounds.

Taking down a few ordinary zombies lucky enough to squeeze in.

Entering the second-to-last carriage, Su Huan flipped his hand to close the compartment bridge door, with high heat seeping from his hand.

The door lock melted, sealing it completely.

”Bang!”

A Night Demon happened to crash into the door, its scarlet eyes meeting Su Huan’s gaze.

The glass in front of him was pierced rapidly, forming terrifying cracks.

Su Huan switched his submachine gun to full-automatic mode, unloading the remaining 22 rounds of 5.56 armor-piercing bullets into the creature’s skull the instant the glass shattered.

The flames reflected off Su Huan’s face, calm to a deathly stillness.

Seeing this face, Yu Yue’s initial tension gradually dissipated, as she held onto his arm, half-hanging onto him walking forward.

Various chaotic information flooded her ears.

Suddenly, a sentence made her halt in her tracks.

Feeling the tug on his arm, Su Huan turned back, puzzled, to look at her.

”They want to harm you!”
