Rebirth: A Cinderella's Counterattack

Chapter 123: Chapter 112: There is a Green Meadow on the Roof of the Zhang Family House

Zhang Hongru excitedly picked up Zhang Jingjing, ”Did you hear? Mother and children are safe, it’s twins, you are a big sister now!”

He even took out his wallet, handed two banknotes to Zhang Jingjing, ”Later when you go home, remember to ask Uncle Wang to bring some nutritional supplements here, Dad won’t be coming home these days, you have to be obedient at home.” Zhang Jingjing looked at her excited father, and it wasn’t hard to imagine that if the children Ma Lina had given birth to were indeed Zhang Hongru’s, her future would be much less favored. Startled, she did not take the banknotes, and instead, she almost burst into tears looking at Luo Qianqian and the others.

Luo Qianqian watched Zhang Jingjing, smiled gently, and comforted her, then she was puzzled by what the nurse’s expression had meant. Encountering newborns, shouldn’t she be excited and congratulatory? Especially twins, which aren’t common.

Only when Ma Lina was wheeled out did Luo Qianqian understand what was happening.

Two children, one of which was a slightly darker Asian, which was not a problem, but the other one was unmistakably black-skinned.

”Mom said I was very dark when I was young, I wonder if he is as dark as my little brother,” Luo Qianqian said, looking at Zhang Hongru’s paler face. Ma Lina was asleep, unaware of everything since cesarean is performed under anesthesia.

”The two little brothers don’t look alike at all,” He Wenyu observed, looking at the children with curiosity.

Seeing the change in Zhang Hongru’s expression, and the anger in his eyes, Luo Qianqian unsparingly jabbed.

”This is called fraternal twins, they were conceived within half an hour...” Luo Qianqian couldn’t finish her sentence; after all, she was still a primary school student.

”Can paternity testing be done here in the hospital?” Zhang Hongru coldly asked, looking at the two children.

”Yes, it can,” the nurse said with a look of sympathy, which infuriated Zhang Hongru. He glanced at Zhang Jingjing and said, ”You come too.”

Luo Qianqian and He Wenyu waited in place for Zhang Jingjing to return. After seeing the skin color of that child, how could anyone claim he was their own?

”Let’s go,” Zhang Jingjing said, pressing a cotton swab against her arm, revealing a forced smile, ”I’ll treat you to ice cream.”

”Trust your mom,” Luo Qianqian patted Zhang Jingjing’s shoulder, who would have thought Zhang Hongru would even suspect Zhang Jingjing after seeing his two sons?

Zhang Jingjing tugged at the corner of her mouth but couldn’t muster a smile, ”I believe in my mom, it’s just that I am a bit disappointed in dad.”

”Everything will be okay, you won’t even have to lift a finger to get revenge, isn’t that great?” He Wenyu could only comfort Zhang Jingjing by her side.

Luo Qianqian felt a strange sense of anticipation, ”How about letting your dad investigate the blood relationship between the two children as well?”

Zhang Jingjing curiously looked at Luo Qianqian, ”My dad has already checked it, the results will be out in a week, how did you know?”

”Just guessing.” It’s not even the same skin color, how could one not be curious?

—

Zhang Hongru, under the pretext of attending meetings, disappeared for a week. He had only arranged for a caretaker to look after Ma Lina, using the excuse that her wound hadn’t healed properly to prevent her from moving to the nursery, and claiming the baby was too small and susceptible to infection to stop nurses from bringing the child to the ward. Ma Lina hadn’t seen her child or Zhang Hongru for a week, leaving her uneasily drumming inside without understanding why.

”Such twins are possible,” the doctor explained to Zhang Hongru, pushing his glasses up in a scientifcally rigorous manner as he looked at the certificate claiming different fathers for the same mother. ”As long as you have a sexual encounter with two different people within half an hour, there’s a chance for this to happen.” The look in his eyes clearly suggested that Zhang Hongru was really open.

Zhang Hongru pinched the other report in his hand: there was a possibility that neither child had him as their biological father.

He felt intensely cuckolded, as if even the roof had turned green. Neither of his sons shared the same father, and whose father were they if not his? Yet, his daughter Jingjing was undoubtedly his.

”Just look at Dad’s expression to know the result,” Jingjing whispered to Luo Qianqian and He Wenyu as they secretly crouched by the stairwell, watching Zhang Hongru’s gloomy face as he entered Ma Lina’s hospital room.

In a hurry, they ran to the door to eavesdrop:

”Hongru, you’re back. Try this chicken soup; Madam Lin sent it over, it’s really delicious,” Ma Lina said, relieved to see Zhang Hongru. ”I know you work hard and even have to travel; let me get you a bowl... What are you doing!” The stainless-steel lunchbox fell to the floor, and a chicken leg rolled out.

”You still have the face to ask? Are the kids mine? Huh? I provide you with luxury, and you give me a cuckold’s hat? Huh?”

”Ah, Ho... Hongru,” it sounded as if she were choking, Luo Qianqian had already hurried into the room with Jingjing and He Wenyu, only to see Ma Lina being grabbed by the neck and lifted by one of Zhang Hongru’s hands, her eyes almost bulging out.

”Uncle Zhang, stop!” Seeing Jingjing terrified into silence, Luo Qianqian shouted loudly. Zhang Hongru’s eyes were bloodshot, seeming to have lost all reason. ”Uncle Zhang, killing her might relieve your anger, but even children know that murder will be paid with life. If you are arrested, what will happen to Jingjing? Will you think about Jingjing?”

Startled by Luo Qianqian’s loud shout, Zhang Hongru released his grip, and Ma Lina fell back onto the bed, her eyes vacant and staring ahead.

”Uncle, you could divorce her and ruin her reputation. Why jeopardize your own future?” He Wenyu, also stunned, quickly recovered at Luo Qianqian’s prompting and said.

”Divorce? I don’t want that!” Ma Lina shouted in despair.

”Dad, please, don’t kill anyone!!!” Jingjing, as if awakening from a nightmare, rushed forward and hugged Zhang Hongru tightly. He wanted to push her away, but then thought, she’s the only biological child he had, maybe he shouldn’t be so harsh; he’d already been neglectful enough over this woman!

With that thought, Zhang Hongru glared fiercely at Ma Lina. No woman could bear the malevolent gaze of a man accustomed to the ruthless business world, and she broke down, ”No, they’re all your children, don’t listen to Jingjing’s nonsense, she’s just jealous!”

”Jealous, jealous of two harmless people? Can a daughter of the Zhang family be slandered by you?” Zhang Hongru sneered as he threw the paternity report on Ma Lina.

Ma Lina, dispirited, picked up the report and read line by line, her face growing paler as she read that neither child was his, nor shared the same father: ”How could this be, cough cough.” Her voice turned hoarse, disbelief written all over her face.

”A divorce agreement will be sent by a lawyer. You just stay in the hospital and get through your confinement period; once it’s over, get out! Your belongings will be delivered by Old Wang tomorrow. As for the jewelry I bought you, don’t even think about it. I’ll donate it to impoverished mountain areas, and the jewelry will be sold off cheaply. You better not push me too far, or you’re dead!” Zhang Hongru, picking up the report without a glance at Ma Lina, left the hospital room with Jingjing. Luo Qianqian and He Wenyu quickly followed. Who knew what a crazed woman might do?

”Dad, they have no use for gowns in impoverished mountain areas, give them to Auntie instead.” Seeing the turn of events, Jingjing silently rejoiced that she no longer had to call that woman Mom and added a jab, ”Save them for attending banquets or finding someone new.”

”Who did you learn that from?” Zhang Hongru frowned upon hearing Jingjing’s comment. Luo Qianqian quickly lowered her head; she had taught her that last time to stir up trouble between Ma Lina and Liu Yajing.

”It’s Auntie, Auntie told me to say it was from Liu Yajing Auntie,” Jingjing blinked and looked towards the room.

”Hmm, is that so? Then let her have them. Don’t say such things from now on. And when you go home, remember to tell your Aunt Liu Yajing that she’s in the hospital, hmph.” Zhang Hongru looked at the hospital room with even greater disdain.
