The Valued Lady is Truly Dominant

Chapter 844: Chapter 844: No Need to Rush the Betrothal

Facing Madam Song’s probe, Song Ci was momentarily silent, only fiddling with the prayer beads, lost in thought.

After a while, Song Ci spoke, ”Logically speaking, a girl from the Duke Zhongyong Mansion matches Jie’er and the others, our Song Family would be the one reaching upwards.”

These words were modest. The Song Family’s children were already popular, and after the second couple received their official titles, the children became even more sought after. Even someone as young as Yuanyuan had people tentatively proposing a betrothal.

Besides, Song Lingzhao and the others were impressive themselves, one versed in literature, the other in martial arts, both handsome and capable, with a respectable family background. Moreover, their mother had a substantial dowry, and they had promising futures. In every aspect, they were an excellent match.

But when speaking, one should be artful, so Song Ci modestly conceded a bit, which also pleased the daughter-in-law.

Madam Song, being flattered, felt mentally and physically elated, and with a smile she said, ”It’s not really reaching upwards. After all, Jie’er is a man of distinction, born into the Prime Minister’s Mansion, and currently is the Fifth Prince’s study companion. Surely his future prospects are bright. As a daughter-in-law, I feel that if our families could unite by marriage, it would indeed be a beautiful thing.”

”That’s true, but you overlooked one point, Su’er hasn’t settled a marriage yet.”

Madam Song was momentarily speechless, and her heart ached again at this point. She had always wished for her son to marry her niece, but Song Zhiyuan had long stated he wouldn’t let Su’er marry a girl from the Duke Zhongyong Mansion. Otherwise, why would it be delayed like this?

Now that their son was studying with Grandmaster Fu, the marriage matter seemed forgotten by the Prime Minister, causing her much distress.

”Mother, concerning Su’er’s marriage, the Prime Minister does not allow me to interfere, and I am completely clueless.” Madam Song said, sounding aggrieved.

Very few mothers in the capital can’t meddle in their son’s marriage matters, and she was among them.

So frustrated.

Song Ci thought to herself, isn’t it just that the clever son deemed her unreliable, basing things solely on emotional and familial ties?

”In the end, the eldest wishes to wait for Su’er to gain a title before making plans. After all, once a person attains a status, combined with a good background, why wouldn’t good girls come seeking?” Song Ci eyed her as she spoke, ”Even you hope for a first daughter-in-law from a prestigious and capable background.”

Madam Song’s face flushed, and she mumbled without speaking.

”Su’er hasn’t settled on a marriage, and the younger brothers below him are not in a hurry either. After all, we don’t yet know what kind of family Su’er will affiliate with in the future. If Jie’er’s wife comes from a higher status than the wife of the eldest grandson, it would inevitably overshadow the eldest grandson’s wife, which isn’t harmonious for family peace.”

Madam Song was startled at this thought, which hadn’t occurred to her. If the Prime Minister favored Song Lingjie, the nephew, and only looked at the big picture, wouldn’t he entrust the Song Family to the competent Song Lingjie, provided his wife’s family was also capable? If so, wouldn’t that mean...

Song Ci watched her face change subtly and took a quiet sip of tea.

”Mother, do you think this match is unsuitable?”

”It’s not unsuitable. As I said, since Su’er’s marriage hasn’t been settled, Jie’er and the others aren’t in a rush. Besides, the children are only fourteen or fifteen, why hurry? Are we worried about not marrying off when the time comes? The key is to see if the children can prove themselves. If they are accomplished, there’s no fear of not securing a marriage.”

This was an indication of not settling for a match.

Madam Song, while somewhat disappointed, thought of the eldest, focusing on personal interests first.

Fine, then let’s use Su’er’s unmarried status as an excuse to defer decisions for the younger brothers.
