The Valued Lady is Truly Dominant

Chapter 838: Chapter 838: Someone’s Getting Anxious

Madam Lu led Madam Shen away, and Song Ci leaned against the pillow, his hand touching a smooth, cool winter melon.

”The Emperor’s actions are truly... doesn’t he worry about those household madams secretly badmouthing him behind his back?”

Granting concubines to officials—how many official wives would genuinely smile and say they like it? Most likely, they’re cursing him for meddling, calling him a foolish ruler in their hearts.

”The officials receiving the rewards this time either have chaotic households or are childless wives. Even if they’re not granted, other elderly ladies would seek them out in the palace.” Nanny Gong said, ”Actually, it’s nothing much. It’s all about getting what they ask for.”

Being a concubine sounds harsh, but for those without roots or family, having a place to settle down is better than being bullied.

If lucky, finding a minor guard to become an official wife and having someone recognize your talent over the years could lead to prosperity, making a lifetime of it.

Song Ci rubbed his aching head: ”Don’t mention it; let’s just hope Madam Shen has some tricks up her sleeve to help Madam Lu keep that Bai Lianhua in check, so she doesn’t bounce around too much; otherwise, who knows what the third child might be instigated to do next.”

If it’s just small troubles, it’s fine, but if they’re urged to choose sides in the succession, that would be disastrous.

Nanny Gong laughed: ”If they have no skills, isn’t it comforting to have you as a stabilizing force here? Are you really worried about handling a mere concubine?”

Song Ci sighed: ”Your Madam is honest and straightforward, not afraid of others, just wary of those little demons playing dirty tricks, which are hard to guard against!”

Speaking a bit in favor of others, Song Ci thought, when it comes to real household fights, she might not fare as well as these madams who grew up in such environments, relying merely on her grit and strong backing, with her high status.

Otherwise, just with her defiant mouth, she’d have been dealt with who knows how many times.

...

Song Zhiqing was granted a Noble Concubine, which swept through each house and courtyard like a whirlwind.

In the main courtyard, Madam Song drank a bowl of bird’s nest soup, rubbing her belly and said, ”No wonder they say the third child resembles the old man the most. Look at him, his good fortune with women is exactly the same.”

The tone carried a hint of sarcasm.

In the Listening Pavilion, Madam Song the Second had just fed her daughter a bowl of rice porridge and snorted heavily, saying nothing more.

But the most intriguing scene was at the Leisure Garden.

Shuanglu looked timidly at Bai Shuilian, whose face was full of gloom, and said, ”Auntie, why not pretend to be sick and not go... ah.”

Smack.

Shuanglu’s face received a heavy slap.

Covering her face, she knelt down trembling, begging for mercy, ”Auntie.”

”If you don’t understand, don’t pretend to. If I don’t go, would that be considered a crime of disrespecting the Lady? If I don’t go, will there be a place for me in this house in the future?” Bai Shuilian glared at her with a sinister gaze: ”What’s your real intention, telling me not to go?”

Shuanglu sobbed.

Quanmama walked in, seeing the scene, dismissed Shuanglu, and personally helped Bai Shuilian into the inner room to wash up and tidy her face.

Seeing the slightly haggard person in the mirror, Quanmama leaned down and softly said, ”After the Young Master and Young Lady were taken away, Auntie, you panicked, which isn’t a good sign.”

Bai Shuilian’s body stiffened.

Quanmama stood up and said, ”Auntie, you need to understand your identity and situation. With a newcomer in the household, among the four brothers of the Song Family, only the Third Master was granted. Who do you think came up with this idea? And to press down on whom? The more anxious you are, the more likely mistakes will occur, which is what people are hoping for.”

”Quanmama, I...”

Quanmama undid her hair, saying calmly, ”If you want the children back, Auntie, you need to be determined, but for now, you should focus on keeping ties with the Master.”

Bai Shuilian’s heart trembled slightly.
