Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The John Doe Ultimatum

Early August 1993. The Los Angeles heat had settled over Sovereign Studios like a suffocating, woolen blanket, but inside Elias van Kempen’s acoustic-glass corner office, the air was heavily refrigerated and thick with cinematic obsession.

David Fincher was currently pacing the length of the polished concrete floor, gripping a rolled-up copy of the Se7en script like a weapon.

”We have Pitt. We have Freeman,” Fincher muttered rapidly, his eyes burning with the manic, sleep-deprived intensity of a true auteur. ”The kinetic energy is there. The gravity is there. But they are just the mice in the maze, Elias. I need the architect of the maze. I need John Doe. And he cannot be just another guy holding a gun. He has to be brilliant. He has to be a theatrical, sanctimonious psychopath who completely justifies his own atrocities.”

Paul Rudd, sitting at his modular steel desk and aggressively highlighting a terrifying stack of pre-production budget spreadsheets, let out a nervous squeal.

”David, we literally have no money left for a theatrical psychopath!” Paul panicked, adjusting his Anti-Awkwardness Sunglasses to shield his eyes from the glaring red numbers on his paper. ”We secured Brad and Morgan by promising backend gross, but their agents still demanded union scale daily minimums! We are operating on fumes! We can’t afford an A-lister for the villain!”

Elias sat perfectly reclined in his stolen mahogany director’s chair. He was wearing his vintage leather jacket over a crisp, open-collared black shirt. He didn’t look like a producer trying to balance a budget. He looked like an apex predator leisurely flipping through a menu.

”We do not need a traditional A-lister, Paul,” Elias murmured, his baritone voice a dark, velvet hum that effortlessly absorbed the frantic energy of the room. ”We need a stage actor with a superiority complex. Someone whose ego is larger than his box office draw.”

Fincher stopped pacing. ”I was looking at Kevin Spacey. He just did Glengarry Glen Ross. He’s got that chilling, arrogant, hyper-articulate vibe. He’s a theater snob, but he devours the screen.”

Paul dropped his highlighter. ”Kevin Spacey?! Are you out of your minds? His theatrical agency is notorious! They are currently demanding a five-hundred-thousand-dollar upfront fee for independent features, plus Top Billing! If we put his name before the title, Brad Pitt’s camp will declare war!”

”He will not receive Top Billing,” Elias stated smoothly, a dangerous, shamelessly charismatic smile curling his lips. ”In fact, his name will not appear in the opening credits at all.”

Fincher frowned, his creative gears grinding to a halt. ”No opening credit? For the main villain? Why?”

”Because if the audience doesn’t know who the killer is when they sit down in the theater, the psychological terror is magnified tenfold,” Elias explained, weaving artistic genius into his capitalist agenda. ”It is an unadulterated shock to the system. And more importantly, keeping his name off the marketing materials drastically reduces his contractual leverage.”

”You want to hire an arrogant Broadway actor, offer him zero upfront cash, and then wipe his name off the movie poster?” Paul whimpered, burying his face in his hands. ”He is going to spit in your face, Elias.”

”He won’t spit,” Elias chuckled darkly, standing up and adjusting his cuffs. ”He will sweat. Grab your coat, Paul. We are going to the theater.”

The VIP lounge of the Ahmanson Theatre in downtown Los Angeles was an enclave of velvet ropes, dark mahogany, and suffocating elitism. It was where the upper crust of the theatrical world congregated after exclusive matinees to drink exorbitant cocktails and flatter each other.

Elias and Paul approached the velvet rope. The maître d’, a stiff-necked man in a tuxedo, immediately moved to block them.

Elias didn’t use a magical aura. He simply slipped a folded wad of cash from his pocket and pressed it into the man’s palm with a flawless, aristocratic grace that demanded absolute compliance.

Deep in his cerebral cortex, the digital loan shark registered the bribe alongside its daily tax.

The two hundred dollars vanished, bringing his liquid cash to $398,600.00. Elias ignored the phantom pinch. He was hunting a half-million-dollar margin.

The maître d’ unhooked the rope.

Elias strode into the lounge, his eyes tracking with the clinical precision of a radar system. He found his target occupying the largest, most secluded leather booth in the back corner.

Kevin Spacey sat with his legs crossed, swirling a snifter of brandy. He was surrounded by three sycophantic junior agents who were currently laughing entirely too hard at a joke he had just told. Spacey radiated a smug, theatrical arrogance—a man who deeply believed he was the smartest person in any room he entered.

Elias didn’t wait for an introduction. He walked directly up to the booth.

”You are in the wrong seats,” Elias murmured to the three junior agents, his voice a lethal, vibrating command.

The agents blinked, looking up at the incredibly striking, imposing teenager. The sheer, overwhelming density of Elias’s confidence terrified them. Without waiting for their boss’s permission, the three men scrambled out of the booth and vanished into the crowd.

Spacey’s smug smile faltered. He lowered his brandy, his eyes narrowing at Elias.

”I don’t recall inviting the cast of a grunge music video to my table,” Spacey drawled, his voice dripping with condescending theatricality. He recognized Elias from the Calvin Klein billboards. ”If you’re looking for an autograph, kid, my publicist is at the bar.”

Paul Rudd stood nervously by the edge of the booth, clutching his clipboard like a shield.

Elias didn’t get angry. He smoothly slid into the leather booth directly across from the actor. He leaned back, resting his arms on the backrest, projecting the effortless, street-smart dominance of a seasoned mob boss.

”I am Elias van Kempen. Sovereign Media,” Elias purred, an utterly shameless, charismatic smirk playing on his lips. ”And I am not here for an autograph, Kevin. I am here to offer you the role of John Doe in David Fincher’s Se7en.”

Spacey let out a short, sharp bark of laughter.

”Fincher? The guy who made a mess of Alien 3?” Spacey mocked, shaking his head. ”I heard you bought that script out of a bargain bin. Listen to me very carefully, kid. I am a serious actor. I don’t work for indie start-ups operating out of abandoned warehouses. My agency quote is five hundred thousand dollars. I demand Top Billing alongside Pitt and Freeman, and I want a dedicated, double-wide trailer. Unless your little boutique label has a half-million in cash sitting in that clipboard, get out of my booth.”

It was a textbook Hollywood rejection. The actor was hiding his insecurity behind a wall of exorbitant demands.

Elias didn’t blink. He reached forward, picking up an untouched glass of ice water from the table.

He mentally engaged the digital loan shark. He needed the nuclear launch codes.

[CHA-CHING!]

The world shifted into a translucent, radioactive red. The grid bypassed Spacey’s bespoke suit and locked directly onto the inner breast pocket of the actor’s jacket, scanning a folded, heavily redacted legal document from a crisis management firm, alongside checking his digital banking footprint.

The system’s forensic algorithms ripped through the data, projecting the dark, unsanitized reality of the actor’s life directly into Elias’s retinas.

[SCAN COMPLETE. Elias’s dark eyes turned into absolute voids of icy, sociopathic joy. The red overlay vanished.

The actor wasn’t just arrogant. He was a walking time bomb.

Elias took a slow sip of the ice water. He set the glass down with a soft, deliberate clink.

”Lima ratus ribu dolar untuk seorang aktor adalah investasi yang masuk akal,” Elias whispered, his baritone voice dropping into a chilling, hypnotic register that was meant only for Spacey’s ears. (Five hundred thousand dollars for an actor is a reasonable investment.) (However, half a million dollars for a man who routinely pays sixty thousand dollars in hush money to theater assistants in London via a shell company... that is a financial liability I cannot accept, Kevin.)

Spacey stopped breathing.

The smug, theatrical sneer vanished from his face as if it had been violently violently ripped away. The blood drained from his cheeks at a terrifying speed, leaving him looking sickly and pale.

”I... I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Spacey stammered, his voice suddenly sounding incredibly small.

Elias leaned in, resting his elbows on the mahogany table, closing the distance. He executed the Information Arbitrage with the surgical precision of an executioner.

”Sovereign Media maintains a highly aggressive private intelligence division,” Elias lied flawlessly, utilizing the Fake Syndicate alibi to explain his omniscience. ”We audit the existential risk of every asset we acquire. I know about the NDAs, Kevin. I know about the ’private parties’. I know exactly how much your crisis management fixer is charging you to keep your predatory habits out of the tabloids.”

A massive, highly visible sweatdrop materialized on Kevin Spacey’s forehead. He gripped the edge of the table, his knuckles turning white. The teenager sitting across from him wasn’t an indie producer. He was a monster. He was a monster who held the keys to his absolute, unrecoverable destruction.

If this kid went to the press, his career was over. The studios would drop him. The theater world would banish him. He would face criminal charges.

”What do you want?” Spacey choked out, his voice barely a whisper, his eyes darting around the lounge in sheer, unadulterated panic.

”I want John Doe,” Elias stated smoothly, pulling a contract from his inner jacket pocket and sliding it across the table.

”You will play the role for the Screen Actors Guild absolute daily minimum,” Elias dictated, mapping out the terms of the extortion. ”Your name will be entirely redacted from the opening credits. You will receive zero promotional billing. You will not attend the premiere. You will be a ghost.”

Spacey stared at the contract, his hands trembling violently. ”SAG minimum? No credit? You’re completely erasing me! My agency will go insane!”

”Tell your agency it is a brilliant, uncompromising artistic choice to preserve the shock value of the third act,” Elias countered seamlessly, tossing a pen onto the contract. ”It satisfies your theatrical ego while simultaneously protecting your career from the catastrophic fallout of a front-page scandal.”

Elias tapped a specific, heavily bolded paragraph near the bottom of the document.

”Dan ini adalah asuransiku,” Elias purred, twisting the psychological knife. (And this is my insurance.) ”A Broad Morality Clause. The most aggressive in Hollywood history. If a single allegation of your... extracurricular activities breaches the public sphere and depreciates the value of my film, Sovereign Media is legally empowered to seize all of your personal assets, residuals, and properties to offset our marketing losses.”

Spacey looked at the Morality Clause. It was a financial guillotine hanging directly over his neck. But the alternative—Elias walking out of this booth and calling the LAPD or the New York Times today—was immediate execution.

With a tragic, pathetic gasp of a man completely outplayed and violently subjugated by a superior predator, Spacey picked up the pen.

His hand shook as he scrawled his signature across the bottom of the document, legally binding himself to the most predatory, unforgiving contract of the decade.

”You’re a sick, twisted kid,” Spacey hissed, practically shoving the contract back at Elias.

”I am a fiduciary, Kevin,” Elias smiled politely, inspecting the signature with deep satisfaction. ”I suggest you remain on your best behavior. Sovereign Media is always watching.”

Elias slid out of the booth, adjusting his vintage leather jacket with immaculate grace. He didn’t look back at the broken, sweating actor.

He walked out of the VIP lounge, Paul Rudd scurrying closely behind him.

Once they hit the sun-baked sidewalk outside the Ahmanson Theatre, Paul let out a long, ragged exhale. He looked at Elias with wide, worshipful, slightly terrified eyes.

”Elias,” Paul breathed, clutching his clipboard. ”You just forced Kevin Spacey to work for minimum wage. You erased his name from the movie. You basically instituted a zero-tolerance policy for Hollywood predators! You’re... you’re like a dark hero, man! You’re cleaning up the industry to protect the innocent!”

Elias stopped walking. He turned to look at his Executive Assistant. His dark, incredibly handsome face broke into a slow, thoroughly shameless smirk of pure capitalist amusement.

”Keadilan hanyalah produk sampingan yang membahagiakan, Paul,” Elias clarified smoothly, completely shattering Paul’s illusion of his morality. (Justice is merely a happy byproduct, Paul.) (I did this purely to cut the actor’s payroll by ninety-nine percent, and to protect my box office profit margin from scandal depreciation risk. Morality is a highly efficient budget-cutting tool.)

Paul stared at him. The romantic illusion evaporated, leaving only the stark, terrifying reality of Elias’s unadulterated sociopathy.

Paul sweatdropped, letting his head drop forward in absolute despair. ”I work for a supervillain. An actual, certified supervillain who uses human decency to save fifty cents.”

Deep in Elias’s neural pathways, the digital loan shark erupted in a massive, glorious symphony of golden applause.

[CHA-CHING!][SYSTEM NOTIFICATION: THE PREDATOR SNARE & MORALITY CHOKEHOLD EXECUTED WITH GOD-TIER, CATHARTIC RUTHLESSNESS!][EVALUATION: YOU X-RAYED A PREDATOR, BLACKMAILED HIM INTO MINIMUM WAGE, AND USED ’ARTISTIC INTEGRITY’ TO EXPLAIN WHY YOU REFUSED TO PUT HIS NAME ON THE POSTER. Elias felt the warm surge of CP hit his ledger. His balance was fully restored.

”Start the car, Paul,” Elias commanded, striding down the pavement. ”The cast is locked. The budget is secure. It is time to shoot a masterpiece.”
