Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The Manufacturing Hack

Early September draped Los Angeles in a dry, stifling heat, but inside the Sovereign Media headquarters on Sunset Boulevard, the climate was artificially, ruthlessly controlled. The newly installed HVAC system hummed with a quiet, expensive efficiency, cooling the vast expanse of polished concrete and seamless acoustic glass.

Elias van Kempen sat behind his modular steel executive desk, wearing a tailored charcoal waistcoat over a crisp white shirt, the sleeves rolled up precisely to the forearms. He was meticulously reviewing a stack of syndication contracts, projecting the absolute, unbothered tranquility of a corporate monarch.

That tranquility was violently shattered by the sound of sprinting footsteps.

The heavy glass door to his office swung open, nearly bouncing off its hinges. Paul Rudd stumbled inside, gasping for air, clutching a crumpled copy of the Los Angeles Times and a handwritten legal pad. His Anti-Awkwardness Sunglasses were pushed up onto his messy hair, his face a portrait of sheer, unadulterated commercial panic.

”They’re gone, Elias!” Paul wheezed, leaning his hands on the steel desk and staring wild-eyed at his boss. ”Tower Records on Sunset! Tower Records in Westwood! Sam Goody in the Valley! They are completely, entirely out of stock!”

Elias didn’t flinch. He carefully capped his silver fountain pen and placed it parallel to his ledger. ”I assume you are referring to the physical inventory of ’Creep’?”

”I am referring to the fact that we are currently hemorrhaging money!” Paul cried, waving the legal pad. ”The mall sync strategy worked too well! KROQ has the track on heavy rotation! Teenagers are swarming the record stores looking for the CD single, and the clerks are turning them away because our fifty duplicated cassette tapes sold out in forty-five minutes! Kids are buying bootleg recordings out of the trunks of cars, Elias! We are losing hundreds of thousands of dollars in physical retail margin!”

Paul slammed both hands on the desk. ”We have to call Sony. We have to call Tommy Mottola! You beat him at City Hall, he respects you now! If we offer him a fifty-fifty split on the physical distribution, he can have his pressing plants stamp out a hundred thousand CDs by tomorrow morning!”

Elias looked at Paul. His dark, striking eyes were entirely devoid of panic. Instead, they radiated a chilling, profound disgust at the very concept of shared equity.

”I do not share margins, Paul,” Elias stated, his baritone voice a smooth, lethal purr that instantly cooled the frantic energy in the office. ”Calling Tommy Mottola to print our physical assets is equivalent to inviting a vampire into a blood bank. If Sony touches the manufacturing pipeline, they will institute a ’packaging deduction’, a ’breakage fee’, and a ’wholesale distribution tax’ that will effectively reduce our fifty percent to twelve percent. I refuse to subsidize their corporate catering.”

”Then what are we going to do?!” Paul shrieked. ”We don’t own a factory! We can’t meet the demand!”

Elias stood up, fetching his vintage leather jacket from the back of his ergonomic chair. He slipped it on, his posture locking into absolute, predatory dominance.

”We do not currently own a factory, Paul,” Elias corrected flawlessly. ”But the Savings and Loan crisis has created an ecosystem of profound industrial despair. Grab the keys to the Civic. We are going to the Valley.”

The San Fernando Valley was baking under a relentless sun when the rusted, asthmatic 1984 Honda Civic sputtered into the cracked parking lot of a grim, beige industrial park. The air smelled of hot asphalt, ozone, and impending bankruptcy.

Elias stepped out of the vehicle, entirely immune to the heat, and looked up at a faded, peeling sign above a rolling metal bay door. Valley Disc & Tape Manufacturing.

”Elias, this place looks abandoned,” Paul whispered, eyeing the overgrown weeds pushing through the concrete. ”Are you sure they print CDs here? It looks like they print tetanus.”

”The aesthetic of despair usually hides heavily depreciated assets,” Elias murmured, walking toward the side office door.

He didn’t knock. He pushed the heavy metal door open and stepped inside.

The interior of the plant was massive, dimly lit, and suffocatingly hot. Rows of expensive, heavy-duty injection molding machines, glass mastering rigs, and automated jewel-case assemblers sat completely silent. The sheer mechanical potential of the room was staggering, but the silence was the sound of a business bleeding to death.

In the center of the silent factory floor, pacing back and forth with a phone pressed to his ear, was a man in his late forties. He wore a sweat-stained button-down shirt, his tie loosened, his face flushed with the deep, purple hue of a man on the verge of a cardiac event.

”I told you, I just need another thirty days!” the man yelled into the receiver, wiping his forehead with a greasy rag. ”The retail orders dried up, but I have a lead on a massive corporate software run! You can’t foreclose on the machines, I lease them directly! If you lock the doors, I lose everything!”

The man stopped, listening to the voice on the other end, his shoulders slumping in absolute defeat. He slowly lowered the phone, dropping it onto a nearby shipping crate.

Elias van Kempen walked out of the shadows, his footsteps echoing against the concrete.

”Gary, I presume,” Elias said smoothly.

The man spun around, startled. He took in Elias’s vintage leather jacket, his sharp, aristocratic features, and the nervous assistant hovering behind him. Gary frowned, his exhaustion momentarily eclipsed by confusion.

”Who the hell are you?” Gary grunted. ”The plant is closed to the public. If the bank sent you to inventory the machines, you can tell those bloodsuckers they have to wait until Friday. The foreclosure notice gives me until the end of the week.”

Elias didn’t correct the assumption immediately. He needed to audit the kill box.

He mentally engaged the digital loan shark.

[CHA-CHING!]

The red, translucent grid snapped over Elias’s vision. It bypassed the sweat-stained man and locked directly onto the stacks of terrifying legal documents overflowing from the small glass-walled office in the corner. The system ripped through the financial data, illuminating the exact nature of the catastrophe.

Elias let the overlay fade. His dark eyes locked onto the sweating factory owner.

”The bank did not send me, Gary,” Elias stated, his voice dropping into a register of cold, unyielding Wall Street authority. ”The bank sold your debt paper forty-eight hours ago. They offloaded your toxic liability to a shadow creditor at a severe discount to clear their books.”

Elias reached into the inner pocket of his jacket. He pulled out a heavy, notarized legal document, bearing the gold-embossed seal of Sovereign Media. He held it out.

”My name is Elias van Kempen,” Elias introduced himself, the words ringing like a death knell in the silent factory. ”I am your new sole creditor. And I am not here to inventory the machines. I am here to execute the lien.”

Gary stared at the document. The blood drained entirely from his face, leaving him looking sickly and pale. He snatched the paper, his hands shaking violently as he read the transfer of debt. A massive, highly visible sweatdrop rolled down his temple.

The kid had actually bought the $120,000 note.

In a fraction of a second, the digital loan shark in Elias’s head registered the brutal, capital-heavy transaction that had secured this moment.

Elias barely felt the massive drop in his liquidity. The cash was gone, but the infrastructure he was about to steal was worth millions.

”You... you bought my paper,” Gary choked out, his voice cracking. He looked up at Elias, genuine tears of panic welling in his eyes. He abandoned his pride entirely, stepping forward and holding his hands up in a pleading gesture.

”Listen, kid, please! You can’t take my plant! I built this place from the ground up! I’ve been running these presses for ten years!” Gary begged, his voice echoing pathetically. ”I just hit a bad quarter! The major labels squeezed the indie manufacturers out! I just need an extension! Give me sixty days! I’ll pay you twenty percent interest on the principal!”

Paul Rudd winced, looking away. It was brutal.

Elias did not look away. He stepped forward, closing the distance, projecting the absolute, suffocating dominance of a true capitalist predator. He reached out and casually ran a finger along the dusty casing of a silent CD pressing machine.

”Bank tidak memproduksi kesabaran, Gary,” Elias smiled, a dark, terrifying expression of pure, shameless greed. (Banks do not manufacture patience, Gary.) ”Mereka memproduksi bunga utang.” (They manufacture interest.)

Gary swallowed hard, stepping back from the sheer gravity of the teenager’s aura.

”You have misallocated your capital to lease hardware you lack the logistical competence to optimize,” Elias continued, his baritone voice a flawless, merciless blade. ”I am not taking your factory, Gary. I am liberating you from your own managerial incompetence.”

Elias turned to face the broken man, delivering the final, non-negotiable ultimatum.

”I am executing the asset seizure today. Sovereign Media now owns one hundred percent of this facility, including the polycarbonate reserves, the glass mastering rigs, and the lease on this building,” Elias dictated. ”However, I require a labor force that understands the proprietary quirks of these specific machines. Your debt is officially zeroed. In exchange, starting tomorrow, you work for me.”

Gary stared at him, his brain struggling to comprehend the whiplash. He had lost his company, but he wasn’t bankrupt.

”I... work for you?” Gary stammered. ”As the plant manager?”

”As the Head of the Night Shift,” Elias corrected effortlessly, shattering the man’s lingering ego. ”Your shift begins at seven o’clock this evening. We have an immediate run of two hundred thousand compact discs and cassettes for the ’Creep’ single. And Gary... please. Do not waste the plastic shrink-wrap during the packaging phase. It cuts into my profit margins.”

Gary looked at the teenager. He had been completely, utterly devoured by a sixteen-year-old sociopath in a vintage jacket. But looking at the cold, unblinking certainty in Elias’s eyes, Gary knew he had no choice. It was this, or personal bankruptcy and losing his home.

With a profound, tragic sigh of a man submitting to his new corporate overlord, Gary nodded. ”Seven o’clock. I’ll... I’ll go prep the master stampers.”

Gary shuffled away, disappearing into the dark recesses of the factory floor to power up the boilers.

Paul Rudd let out a long, high-pitched wheeze, leaning against a shipping crate. ”Elias, that was the most horrifying thing I have ever witnessed. You didn’t just buy a factory. You bought a man’s soul and told him to save money on tape.”

”I secured our physical distribution pipeline, Paul. The Pop Dictators can no longer choke our supply,” Elias said, looking around the massive space as the heavy machinery slowly began to hum and roar to life, the sound of impending wealth filling the air.

At that exact moment, the system erupted in a golden symphony of triumph.

Elias smiled. His CP balance surged back to 60. He was fully armed. But the system wasn’t done.

[SYSTEM WARNING: DAILY MAINTENANCE FEE DEDUCTION INITIATED.][DEDUCTING -$50.00 USD FROM LIQUID CASH RESERVE.]

His liquid cash settled at $2,117,146.00. The massive capital expenditure had been painful, but the Sovereign Manufacturing CD Plant was officially online.

”Alright, Paul,” Elias said, the noise of the factory floor rising around them. ”The polycarbonate is melting. The audio is being stamped. We have exactly four hours before the first batch of ten thousand units cools and requires physical jewel-case assembly.”

Paul nodded slowly, a sudden, terrible realization dawning on his face. ”Assembly? Elias... we don’t have assembly workers. Gary is just running the machines. Who is going to put ten thousand CDs into plastic cases and shrink-wrap them by tonight?”

Elias turned his dark, mesmerizing eyes onto his Executive Assistant.

”Labor is our highest variable cost, Paul,” Elias murmured smoothly. ”We are going to utilize unpaid, highly motivated executive interns.”

Forty-five minutes later, a taxi pulled up to the industrial park.

Owen Wilson stepped out, wearing a pair of board shorts, a faded t-shirt, and carrying a surfboard under his arm. He looked incredibly relaxed, expecting to meet Paul for a trip to Malibu.

He wandered into the roaring, sweltering factory.

He found Paul Rudd standing at the end of a long, metal conveyor belt, sweating profusely, frantically snapping plastic CD jewel cases together at a terrifying speed.

Elias van Kempen stood on a raised metal catwalk above them, completely unbothered by the heat, holding a clipboard and a stopwatch.

”Owen!” Paul screamed over the noise of the machines, tossing a stack of printed CD booklets toward him. ”Get over here! He’s timing us! If we don’t pack two hundred units a minute, he said he’s going to deduct the cost of the plastic from our non-existent salaries!”

Owen blinked, slowly lowering his surfboard. He looked at the endless stream of freshly stamped compact discs rolling down the belt. He looked up at Elias, who offered a cold, aristocratic nod of acknowledgment.

”Wow,” Owen drawled, the sheer absurdity of the situation washing over him. ”I gotta be honest, Elias. When you said Sovereign Media offered ground-floor opportunities, I didn’t think you meant actual, literal factory labor. The vibes in here are very industrial-revolution, man.”

”Put the surfboard down, Owen. Grab a tape gun,” Elias commanded from the catwalk, his voice carrying effortlessly over the din. ”Every unit you pack represents a direct strike against the institutional monopoly of Sony Music. You are not a packer. You are a revolutionary.”

”I am a slave!” Paul sobbed, aggressively snapping another jewel case shut. ”I went to theater school!”

”Focus on your margins, Paul,” Elias smirked, looking down at the rapidly growing mountain of physical inventory.

He had the hit song. He had the manufacturing plant. And he had a free labor force currently sweating onto the assembly line. The out-of-stock crisis was officially over. Tomorrow morning, Sovereign Media was going to flood the retail market, and Tommy Mottola wouldn’t see a single cent of the profit.
