Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The Distressed Prop House

The fourth week of May 1993 hung over Los Angeles with the suffocating, smog-choked heat that promised a brutal summer.

Inside a dimly lit, foul-smelling dive bar in the deepest, most industrial pocket of the San Fernando Valley, the heat was entirely overshadowed by the sheer, radiating anxiety of Paul Rudd.

Paul sat in a cracked vinyl booth, his knees pressed tightly together, clutching a heavy leather briefcase to his chest. The bar smelled heavily of stale spilled beer, cheap cigarette smoke, and the distinct, metallic scent of bad life choices. At 11:00 AM on a Tuesday, the clientele consisted entirely of men who looked like they broke kneecaps for a living.

”Elias,” Paul whispered, his voice trembling so violently his glasses rattled on his nose. ”Please tell me we are leaving. The man at the pool table has a teardrop tattoo, and he has been staring at my neck for ten minutes. I am a classically trained comedic actor, Elias. I am not built for the criminal underworld. If bullets start flying, I am using this briefcase as a shield, and I do not care what happens to the money inside.”

Elias van Kempen sat across from him, entirely relaxed. He wore a sharply tailored, dark charcoal blazer over a crisp, open-collared white shirt, looking like a young, impossibly wealthy apex predator who had accidentally wandered into a cage full of very tired, very poor wolves.

”Breathe, Paul,” Elias murmured, taking a slow, unbothered sip of his sparkling water with a twist of lime. He had refused the tap water with a look of polite disgust. ”We are not here to engage in gang warfare. We are here to execute a highly specialized financial transaction. We are buying secondary debt.”

Before Paul could launch into another hysterical plea for his life, the bead curtain at the back of the bar parted.

A heavy-set man with a thick, graying beard, wearing a gold chain over a tight polo shirt, walked toward their booth. This was ’Sal’, a prominent local bookmaker and loan shark who catered to the desperate, fading middle-class of Hollywood’s underbelly. Sal slid into the booth next to Paul, completely ignoring the terrified assistant, and locked his dark, calculating eyes onto Elias.

”You’re the kid who set up that underground bloodbath in the warehouse last week,” Sal grunted, his voice like grinding gravel. ”Word on the street is you took the Century City boys for over three hundred grand in betting arbitrage. That’s a bold move for a teenager. What do you want from me?”

Elias offered a smooth, chillingly polite smile. ”I am an admirer of market efficiency, Sal. And currently, you are sitting on an incredibly inefficient asset.”

Elias leaned forward, resting his forearms on the sticky table, his voice dropping into a lethal, silken baritone.

”Arthur Pendelton. Owner of Pendelton Cinematic Props,” Elias stated cleanly. ”He owes your organization one hundred thousand dollars in accumulated gambling debts. He hasn’t made a principal payment in four months. You are currently debating whether to send your associates to break his legs.”

Sal’s eyes narrowed dangerously. ”Arthur is a degenerate. But he owns a massive prop warehouse. He’s got assets. I’ll get my money when he liquidates.”

”He is not going to liquidate, Sal. He is going to be foreclosed upon,” Elias corrected, his tone dripping with the cold, undeniable authority of a corporate raider. He was leveraging the ’Lifestyle Deduction’ and his system’s perfect memory of the era’s real estate crashes flawlessly. ”I have audited the commercial property records. Pendelton is six hundred thousand dollars in arrears on his commercial mortgage. The bank is executing a seizure of the property and all assets inside it by the end of this week.”

Sal stiffened. The bookie knew the rules of the street, but he clearly hadn’t checked the municipal bankruptcy filings.

”If the bank locks the doors on Friday, Arthur Pendelton becomes personally bankrupt,” Elias continued, tightening the psychological noose. ”His assets will be tied up in federal receivership for years. You cannot collect a gambling debt from a man who legally owns nothing. Your hundred-thousand-dollar marker is what Wall Street calls ’Bad Paper’. It is fundamentally worthless.”

Sal cursed under his breath, his thick fingers drumming anxiously on the table. He knew the kid was right. When the federal banks swooped in, street creditors got left in the dust.

”I am here to offer you a bailout,” Elias purred, an absolutely shameless, predatory glint in his dark eyes. He didn’t look at Paul. ”Paul. The briefcase.”

Paul let out a pathetic squeak, fumbling with the brass latches before popping the briefcase open.

Inside sat neatly banded stacks of crisp, untraceable hundred-dollar bills. Exactly forty-five thousand dollars.

Deep within Elias’s mind, the digital loan shark registered the bleeding of his capital.

His liquid cash plummeted to $603,240.00.

Sal stared at the cash, his heavy chest rising and falling.

”Forty-five grand cash. Today. Right now,” Elias whispered, sliding the briefcase slightly closer to the loan shark. It was the ultimate Win-Win Parasite strategy. ”You take a fifty-five percent haircut on the principal, but you walk away with clean, immediate liquidity. You don’t have to hire leg-breakers. You don’t have to fight the bank. You simply transfer Arthur Pendelton’s debt marker to my holding company, and you go enjoy your afternoon.”

Sal looked at the cash, then up at Elias. The teenager was offering him an incredibly raw deal, but it was the only deal that guaranteed he didn’t walk away empty-handed. In the bad paper market, cash was absolute king.

With a heavy, resentful sigh, Sal reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded, notarized promissory note signed in Arthur Pendelton’s messy scrawl.

”You’re a shark, kid,” Sal muttered, tossing the marker onto the table and grabbing the handle of the briefcase. ”Arthur is a stubborn old mule. Good luck getting blood from a stone.”

”I do not want his blood, Sal,” Elias smiled, picking up the marker and slipping it into the inner pocket of his blazer. ”I want his warehouse.”

Thirty minutes later, the rusted Honda Civic pulled up to the gated entrance of Pendelton Cinematic Props.

It was a sprawling, massive industrial complex, but it looked like a decaying monument to old Hollywood. The paint was peeling, the chain-link fences were rusted, and the parking lot was cracked and overgrown with weeds.

Elias stepped out of the car, adjusting his cuffs, his eyes scanning the massive square footage with absolute, calculating hunger. To anyone else, this was a graveyard of junk. To Elias, who needed a logistical fortress to vertically integrate Sovereign Media’s future film and television productions, this was a goldmine waiting to be optimized.

Paul struggled out of the passenger seat, sweating heavily in the midday sun. ”Elias, this place looks like it should be condemned. There are probably raccoons living in the upholstery of the prop cars. Are you sure we want to own this?”

”Infrastructural independence is the foundation of monopoly, Paul,” Elias stated, walking purposefully toward the massive loading bay doors. ”If we rely on third-party vendors to rent us period-accurate costumes, classic vehicles, and weaponry for our productions, they will bleed our margins dry. We must own the supply.”

They entered the warehouse. The sheer scale of the interior was staggering, but it was a chaotic, disorganized mess. Aisles upon aisles of towering metal racks stretched into the gloom, packed with thousands of items. Dusty Victorian gowns, racks of fake M16 rifles, stacks of antique typewriters, a fleet of 1960s muscle cars covered in tarps, and an entire section dedicated to medieval armor.

It smelled of mothballs, old leather, and impending financial ruin.

In the center of the warehouse, screaming at a terrified teenage intern, was Arthur Pendelton.

Arthur was a man in his late sixties, wearing suspenders and a faded polo shirt. His face was red, and he possessed the stubborn, arrogant pride of a man who had worked in Hollywood during its golden age and refused to accept that the world had moved on.

”I said put the Roman shields in sector four!” Arthur bellowed, waving his arms. ”Do you know what those are worth? Charlton Heston held one of those in ’Ben-Hur’! They belong in a museum, not mixed up with the sci-fi garbage!”

”Arthur Pendelton,” Elias’s baritone voice echoed through the vast space, smooth and commanding.

Arthur spun around, his face twisting into a scowl as he took in the sight of the sharply dressed teenager and his nervous, sweating companion.

”Who the hell are you?” Arthur snapped, marching toward them. ”This is a closed set, kid. We don’t do public tours. If you want to rent a tuxedo for your high school prom, go to a strip mall. Get out of my warehouse.”

Elias didn’t move. He stood tall, his 189-centimeter frame projecting an aura of immense, suffocating authority. He wasn’t dealing with a powerful corporate executive; he was dealing with a drowning man who was violently denying the rising water.

It was time to break him.

[CHA-CHING!]

The air around Elias instantly grew heavy, vibrating with a dense, psychological pressure. The sheer weight of his presence hit Arthur like a physical blow. The older man faltered, his aggressive stride faltering, a sudden bead of cold sweat forming on his brow. The teenager suddenly looked terrifyingly old, possessing the cold, dead eyes of a Wall Street liquidator.

”My name is Elias van Kempen,” Elias murmured, pulling the notarized promissory note from his blazer pocket and holding it up between two elegant fingers. ”And I am not here to rent a tuxedo. I am your new primary creditor.”

Arthur stared at the piece of paper. All the color drained from his weathered face. His jaw trembled. He recognized his own signature. He recognized the marker he had given to Sal the loan shark.

”How... how did you get that?” Arthur choked out, taking a panicked step backward. ”Sal wouldn’t sell my paper to a kid! You’re bluffing!”

Elias casually walked over to a nearby prop table and slammed the $100,000 debt marker down onto the dusty wood.

”I bought your debt at a massive discount, Arthur, because your financial profile is a catastrophic failure,” Elias dictated, his voice a cold, brutal scalpel slicing through the man’s illusions. ”You owe one hundred thousand dollars to men who break bones for a living. You are six hundred thousand dollars in arrears on the commercial mortgage for this building. The bank executes the seizure this Friday.”

”These assets are worth millions!” Arthur screamed defensively, gesturing wildly to the racks of dusty costumes. ”That 1968 Mustang over there was driven by Steve McQueen! The studios need my inventory! If I just get one big rental contract, I can pay everyone off!”

”Your illiquid assets are worth exactly zero to a bank, Arthur,” Elias shot back, his Trash-Talk entirely focused on the man’s lack of cash flow. He stepped into Arthur’s personal space, completely dominating him. ”You don’t have cash. You have a mountain of dusty fabric and rusting metal sitting in an un-air-conditioned warehouse. If the bank seizes this property on Friday, they won’t appraise Steve McQueen’s Mustang at sentimental value. They will auction it off for scrap to recoup their mortgage. You will be left with nothing, and the mafia will still want their hundred grand.”

Arthur swayed on his feet, his breathing shallow and rapid. The reality he had been running from for a year had just kicked down his front door.

”What do you want?” Arthur whispered, completely broken.

”I am offering you a Leveraged Buyout,” Elias stated smoothly, pulling a crisp, legally binding corporate transfer document from the inside of his blazer. He laid it next to the debt marker. ”A Win-Win scenario. I will completely forgive your hundred-thousand-dollar personal debt to the underground. I will assume the massive six-hundred-thousand-dollar liability of the bank mortgage, saving you from personal bankruptcy.”

Elias tapped the signature line of the contract.

”In exchange, you will sign over one hundred percent of the shares of Pendelton Cinematic Props LLC to Sovereign Media, right now,” Elias demanded softly. ”You lose the business. But you walk out of this warehouse today with your kneecaps intact, and you sleep soundly tonight knowing no bank or loan shark will ever knock on your door again.”

Paul Rudd stood in the background, his eyes wide. Elias wasn’t stealing the warehouse; he was buying it with a mountain of debt, using the threat of physical and financial destruction as leverage. It was beautiful, terrifying, and entirely shameless.

Arthur looked at the contract. He looked at the vast warehouse he had spent forty years building. Tears welled in the old man’s eyes. But he knew the math. He was cornered.

With a shaking, defeated hand, Arthur reached into his shirt pocket, pulled out a pen, and signed the document.

”It’s yours,” Arthur whispered, his voice cracking. He turned and slowly walked toward the exit, a broken relic of a bygone era.

Elias picked up the contract, inspecting the signature with cold, clinical satisfaction.

”Paul,” Elias commanded, his voice echoing in his newly acquired kingdom. ”Call a cleaning crew. Have the locks changed. And catalogue every single vehicle and firearm in this building. Sovereign Media is officially a logistics provider.”

Deep within his mind, the system roared its approval.

Elias smiled. The war chest was slightly depleted, and he had just taken on a massive $600,000 mortgage liability. But he now owned the tools to build a physical empire. Hollywood was about to realize they could no longer just rent from him; they were going to have to live in his world.
