Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The Sponsorship Barter Hack

Mid-December in Los Angeles was a surreal construct. Palm trees swayed under a relentless sun, while storefronts on Rodeo Drive aggressively pumped artificial snow and heavily orchestrated holiday music onto the sidewalks. To the average consumer, it was a season of joy and generosity.

To Elias van Kempen, the holiday season was a highly coordinated, global corporate conspiracy engineered to artificially inflate Q4 retail margins.

He despised it.

Elias sat behind the wheel of his sputtering 1984 Honda Civic, idling near the curb of Rodeo Drive. He tapped his long fingers against the cracked steering wheel, his dark eyes narrowed in profound, clinical calculation.

He was currently facing a massive logistical liability. The Sovereign Media roster had expanded. He now had three apex-tier female assets in his immediate operational orbit: Charlize Theron, Cindy Crawford, and Milla Jovovich.

As a fiduciary manager, an investment of capital was occasionally required to ensure long-term loyalty. As a man projecting the aura of an untouchable billionaire playboy, failing to provide an elite, visually devastating holiday gift was tantamount to brand suicide.

But Elias was fundamentally, pathologically cheap. The mere thought of walking into a luxury boutique and paying a four-hundred-percent retail markup on compressed carbon made him feel physically ill.

”Elias,” Paul Rudd’s voice cracked from the passenger seat. Paul was sweating, clutching a clipboard to his chest like a ballistic shield. ”The valet is staring at us. He looks like he wants to have the car impounded just for existing on this street.”

Elias smoothly killed the engine. The Civic shuddered violently before dying.

”Let him stare, Paul. He is a victim of his own geographical extortion,” Elias murmured, stepping out of the baking cabin and casually shrugging on his vintage leather jacket over a crisp, white tailored shirt.

He tossed the keys to the terrified valet. The valet, dressed in a pristine red uniform, caught them with two fingers, looking at the rusted key ring with sheer disgust.

”Twenty dollars, sir,” the valet said flatly.

Elias’s jaw tightened imperceptibly. He reached into his pocket and handed over a crisp twenty-dollar bill. It was a microscopic sum, but parting with liquid cash for the ’privilege’ of abandoning a twenty-eight-dollar vehicle on public pavement was a tragedy.

Deep in his cerebral cortex, the digital loan shark recorded the loss, immediately compounding it with its daily toll.

Elias suppressed the phantom pain in his chest. His liquid cash settled at $3,201,953.00. The bleeding had commenced. It was time to extract equivalent value from the retail sector.

”Wait here, Paul,” Elias commanded. ”I am going to procure the annual loyalty dividends.”

Elias turned and walked toward the towering, immaculate marble facade of the Cartier boutique.

He bypassed the doorman with effortless, aristocratic grace, his aura of absolute, unbothered wealth ensuring that no one questioned his faded leather jacket. He stepped into the hushed, frigidly air-conditioned sanctuary of the store. The air smelled of polished glass and old money.

A senior boutique manager, a flawlessly groomed Frenchman whose silver nametag read Pierre, immediately recognized the teenager. Elias’s face had recently dominated the cover of Vogue, and the industry whispers surrounding Sovereign Media had reached the highest echelons of Beverly Hills retail.

”Ah, Monsieur van Kempen,” Pierre greeted, bowing slightly, his eyes gleaming with the anticipation of a massive commission. ”Welcome to Cartier. An honor. How may we assist the visionary of the season today? Are we perhaps looking for something spectacular for the holidays?”

”I am looking for structural perfection, Pierre,” Elias purred, his baritone voice a smooth, velvety rumble that echoed off the glass display cases. ”I require three identical pieces. Necklaces. White gold. High-clarity diamonds. They must project absolute, undeniable power.”

Pierre practically salivated. ”But of course, monsieur. Right this way to the private viewing room.”

Ten minutes later, Elias sat on a plush velvet sofa in a secluded VIP suite. Resting on a black felt tray on the glass table before him were three breathtaking Panthère de Cartier diamond necklaces. They were brilliant, aggressive, and undeniably gorgeous.

”These are from our exclusive winter collection,” Pierre murmured reverently. ”The total carat weight per piece is exceptional. For three, the total investment would be... four hundred and fifty thousand dollars.”

Almost half a million dollars.

Elias didn’t flinch. He didn’t blink. He reached out and picked up one of the necklaces, letting the diamonds catch the heavy, recessed lighting of the viewing room.

”They are visually adequate,” Elias stated, completely deadpan.

He set the necklace back down on the velvet. He didn’t reach for his blue vinyl Sovereign Media checkbook. He simply leaned back into the sofa, crossing his long legs, and locked his dark, mesmerizing eyes onto the boutique manager.

”Pack them up, Pierre,” Elias ordered softly.

Pierre smiled, reaching for his invoice pad. ”Excellent choice, sir. How will we be settling the account today? Wire transfer, or—”

”There will be no transfer of capital today, Pierre,” Elias interrupted, his voice dropping into a chilling, absolute register of corporate extortion.

Pierre froze. The pen slipped slightly in his manicured fingers. ”I... I beg your pardon, sir? I do not understand.”

”Tuan van Kempen, Anda meminta perhiasan senilai setengah juta dolar secara gratis! Ini perampokan!” Pierre gasped, his French accent thickening with sheer, unadulterated panic, suddenly realizing the teenager was entirely serious. (Mr. van Kempen, you are asking for half a million dollars worth of jewelry for free! This is a robbery!)

Elias smiled. It was a dark, terrifying, utterly shameless expression of pure capitalist dominance.

”Ini bukan perampokan, Pierre,” Elias murmured, his voice a lethal, silken blade that sliced perfectly through the manager’s outrage. (This is not a robbery, Pierre.) ”Ini adalah subsidi visibilitas global.” (This is a global visibility subsidy.)

Elias leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, his eyes turning into bottomless voids of pure leverage.

”The Golden Globes are next month,” Elias stated, weaving his trap with mathematical precision. ”My clients—Charlize Theron, Cindy Crawford, and Milla Jovovich—will be dominating the red carpet. They are currently the three most photographed women on the planet. The paparazzi coverage will be syndicated across sixty countries. The exposure value is mathematically incalculable.”

Pierre swallowed hard, a massive, highly visible sweatdrop rolling down his temple.

”Jika Charlize Theron difoto memakai perhiasan Tiffany besok malam,” Elias continued softly, explicitly dropping the name of Cartier’s most hated global rival, ”kerugian pangsa pasarmu di demografi muda akan jauh melebihi harga batu berkilau ini.” (If Charlize Theron is photographed wearing Tiffany jewelry tomorrow night, your loss of market share in the youth demographic will far exceed the price of these shiny stones.)

The silence in the VIP room was catastrophic.

”You... you are blackmailing me,” Pierre choked out, his chest heaving. ”You are threatening to give a half-million-dollar PR monopoly to Tiffany & Co. unless I give you our inventory for free.”

”I am offering you an Unofficial Product Placement barter,” Elias corrected flawlessly, devoid of any human empathy. ”You write off the necklaces as a corporate promotional expense. In exchange, the three most powerful women in Hollywood will casually mention Cartier to every journalist who points a microphone at their collarbones.”

Elias stood up, adjusting his vintage leather jacket. He looked down at the sweating, paralyzed manager.

”Kemas kalung ini,” Elias commanded, his tone leaving absolutely zero room for negotiation, ”atau aku akan menelepon sainganmu sekarang juga.” (Pack these necklaces, or I will call your rival right now.)

Pierre looked at the diamonds. He looked at the teenager. He was an experienced luxury retailer, but he had never been subjected to a hostile boardroom extortion over retail inventory. If Tiffany secured the Sovereign Media trifecta for the award season, Cartier’s board of directors in Paris would hold him personally responsible.

With a tragic, pathetic groan of a man whose profit margin had just been violently assassinated, Pierre picked up the three red velvet boxes.

”I will... I will have them wrapped,” Pierre whispered, looking as though he were about to cry.

”A flawless logistical decision,” Elias offered a polite, aristocratic nod.

Twenty minutes later, Elias van Kempen walked out onto Rodeo Drive, carrying three immaculate, gold-stamped Cartier bags. He had just secured half a million dollars in physical assets without spending a single, agonizing cent.

It was a beautiful day.

While Elias was executing high-end retail fraud in Beverly Hills, a highly volatile, completely unscripted disaster was unfolding ten miles away at the Sovereign Media headquarters on Sunset Boulevard.

The twenty-thousand-square-foot warehouse was usually a sanctuary of quiet, industrial minimalism.

Today, it was ground zero for World War III.

Paul Rudd was currently hiding behind a towering stack of acoustic drywall, clutching a lukewarm, generic-brand coffee carafe to his chest like a bulletproof vest. Beside him, Owen Wilson was casually peeling a banana, looking profoundly fascinated by the psychological warfare occurring in the center of the room.

”I can’t go out there, Owen,” Paul whimpered, his teeth visibly chattering. ”If I step onto that floor, I am going to be caught in the crossfire. They are going to vaporize me.”

”It’s just energy, man,” Owen drawled, taking a bite of his banana. ”You gotta just flow with the hostile vibes. Let it pass through you.”

In the dead center of the polished concrete floor, the three apex predators of Elias’s empire had converged.

It was a logistical accident. Elias had scheduled their holiday bonus meetings with a thirty-minute buffer between each, but Los Angeles traffic and individual arrogance had caused all three timelines to violently collide.

Charlize Theron stood near Elias’s modular steel desk, wearing her faded denim and scuffed boots, her arms crossed tight. She radiated the fierce, unapologetic dominance of Hollywood’s newest, most dangerous rising star.

Sitting elegantly on a modern leather sofa ten feet away was Cindy Crawford. She wore a flawless, camel-hair trench coat, her long legs crossed, projecting the untouchable, established power of the Runway Mafia’s reigning queen.

And leaning against a filing cabinet, blowing a bubble with a piece of cheap chewing gum, was Milla Jovovich. At fifteen, she possessed a feral, rebellious, high-fashion energy that completely ignored the established hierarchy of the older women.

The silence between the three of them was thick, heavy, and lethal.

”I wasn’t aware Elias had started running a daycare center,” Cindy murmured smoothly, her dark eyes sliding over Milla’s oversized blazer. She didn’t raise her voice. She didn’t have to. The condescension was practically weaponized.

Milla popped her gum loudly. ”Yeah, well, I didn’t know Sovereign Media was booking retirement home catalogs, Cindy. But I guess Elias likes collecting antiques.”

Cindy’s eyes narrowed into terrifying, razor-sharp slits.

”Antiques appreciate in value, darling,” Cindy purred, a dark smile playing on her lips. ”Fads end up in the clearance bin by spring.”

Charlize let out a short, cynical laugh, shaking her head. ”Are you two seriously arguing over who has a better shelf life? You’re both walking billboards. Elias is the only one who actually builds the shelf.”

Cindy turned her icy gaze onto Charlize. ”I built my own shelf, Charlize. Long before you stumbled off a bus from South Africa. Elias is my manager. Not my savior.”

”Funny,” Charlize shot back, pushing off the desk and taking a slow, aggressive step forward. ”Because when I walked into the Versace backstage in Milan, you looked pretty bloody desperate to be saved from John Casablancas.”

The air in the warehouse instantly turned to liquid nitrogen. The temperature dropped so fast Paul could practically see his own breath.

”Okay, that’s it! They’re going to kill each other!” Paul shrieked in a panicked whisper. He shoved the coffee carafe into Owen’s hands. ”Go out there! Offer them coffee! Defuse the bomb!”

”Me? No way, man,” Owen laughed, holding his hands up. ”I only step in when the chakras are aligned. Those chakras are currently heavily armed.”

Suddenly, the heavy glass doors at the front of the warehouse swung open.

Elias van Kempen stepped into the building, holding three red Cartier bags.

He didn’t even have to look at the room to feel the catastrophic tension. His capitalist instincts recognized a massive, synchronized devaluation of operational harmony.

Before he could even speak, a deafening, apocalyptic klaxon detonated in his cerebral cortex.

[CRITICAL ALERT: TIER-1 HAREM CONVERGENCE DETECTED!] [WARNING: CATASTROPHIC LOGISTICAL COLLISION IMMINENT. THREE APEX-LEVEL FEMALE ASSETS ARE CURRENTLY OCCUPYING THE SAME PHYSICAL SPACE.] [INITIATING: HAREM MAINTENANCE TAX (PROGRESSIVE TIER 3 ESCALATION).] [DEDUCTING -$500.00 USD FROM LIQUID CASH RESERVE.]

Elias froze mid-stride.

Five hundred dollars.

The digital loan shark had just robbed him of five hundred dollars simply because three women were breathing the same air in his warehouse. The phantom pain of the deduction hit him like a physical punch to the gut. His liquid cash violently down-ticked to $3,201,453.00.

A flash of pure, sociopathic capitalist fury ignited behind his eyes. He glared at the ceiling, his jaw locking so tightly the muscles in his cheek twitched. I will dismantle this algorithm piece by piece, he vowed silently.

But outward rage was a sign of weakness. He needed to neutralize the threat and reassert absolute, monopolistic control over his assets.

He mentally engaged the system, gritting his teeth as he spent his hard-earned points.

[SYSTEM SHOP ACCESSED.][ACTIVATING: PHEROMONE ”SUGAR DADDY” FINANSIAL / AURA DOMINASI (FINANCIAL DOMINATION PHEROMONE)][COST: -10 CP][CURRENT BALANCE: 125 CP]

[CHA-CHING!]

The biological shift was instantaneous and staggering.

The fierce, petty anger radiating from the three women was suddenly swallowed by a massive, inescapable wave of pure, heavy, aristocratic dominance. Elias didn’t look like a stressed teenager managing a crisis. He looked like an impossibly wealthy, dangerous, and deeply devoted emperor stepping into his throne room.

The air thickened. The scent of expensive leather and untouchable confidence washed over the polished concrete.

Charlize, Cindy, and Milla all stopped talking. They physically stiffened, their eyes snapping toward the front doors.

Elias walked slowly toward the center of the room. He didn’t rush. He didn’t look annoyed. He offered a smile so flawlessly charismatic, so deeply, genuinely magnetic, that the three women actually forgot why they were angry.

”An unscheduled board meeting,” Elias murmured, his baritone voice a dark, velvet rumble that physically vibrated in the cavernous space. ”I must apologize for the logistical oversight. However, your collective presence saves me a considerable amount of travel time.”

He stepped up to the coffee table, placing the three immaculate, gold-stamped Cartier bags gently onto the glass.

The red bags practically glowed against the stark industrial background.

”You are the three pillars of Sovereign Media,” Elias stated, his dark eyes sweeping over them, establishing absolute eye contact with each woman in turn, utilizing the Pheromone skill to ensure they felt solely, exclusively seen. ”You have generated millions in gross revenue, terrorized established monopolies, and redefined the global aesthetic.”

He reached into the bags, pulling out the three red velvet boxes. He clicked them open simultaneously.

The brilliant, blinding sparkle of three half-million-dollar Panthère de Cartier diamond necklaces illuminated the room.

Charlize gasped softly, her defensive posture completely collapsing. Cindy Crawford’s perfectly manicured hand flew to her chest, her dark eyes wide with genuine awe. Milla simply stared, her gum-chewing halting entirely.

They were women who had been gifted expensive things by powerful men before. But Elias wasn’t trying to buy their affection. He was acknowledging their power.

”These are not gifts,” Elias lied shamelessly, his voice a hypnotic, devoted whisper. ”They are physical dividends. A tangible reflection of your unparalleled loyalty to this empire. Wear them. Let the industry know that Sovereign Media protects its own.”

He didn’t wait for a thank you. He gently placed a box in front of each of them.

The tension in the warehouse had completely evaporated. The Catfight had been intellectually and aesthetically neutralized. The three women were staring at the diamonds, utterly mesmerized by the sheer, unadulterated devotion of the gesture.

Behind the drywall, Paul Rudd let out a long, high-pitched whimper of absolute worship. ”He did it. He stopped a war with shiny rocks. The man is a literal god.”

Elias turned on his heel, offering a polite, devastatingly charming bow.

”Now, if you will excuse me,” Elias murmured, walking toward his acoustic-glass office. ”I must review our tax liabilities for Q1.”

He shut the glass door behind him.

He didn’t smile. He sat down at his steel desk, pulled out his ledger, and meticulously wrote down: Cartier Promotional Extortion: $0.00.

He had neutralized a five-hundred-dollar system tax, prevented a three-way war, and secured absolute, unbreakable loyalty from the most beautiful women on earth, all by giving away jewelry he had stolen twenty minutes ago.

Deep within his cerebral cortex, the loan shark surrendered to his absolute mastery of the game.

Elias felt the warm surge of CP. His balance ticked up to a secure 140.

He leaned back in his stolen director’s chair, looking out through the glass wall at the three women admiring their diamonds.

The holidays were secure. The empire was peaceful.

Now, he just had to wait for the Golden Globes, and watch Cartier realize they had just funded his Harem’s red carpet domination for free.
