Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The Luxury Bundling Hack

Early May in Los Angeles brought a suffocating, dry heat that baked the sprawling, cracked asphalt of Sovereign Studios. Inside the administrative building, the vintage 1920s architecture offered little relief from the rising temperature, but the true source of the suffocating atmosphere wasn’t the weather. It was the relentless, highly depressing mechanical screech of the office fax machine.

Elias van Kempen sat behind his massive mahogany desk, his posture a flawless portrait of aristocratic calm. He wore his signature faded vintage leather jacket over a crisp white t-shirt, his dark eyes casually scanning a European stock index report.

Across the room, Paul Rudd was currently losing his mind.

Paul stood over the fax machine, his tie undone, his hair sticking up in erratic directions. He snatched another freshly printed page from the tray, his eyes scanning the corporate letterhead before letting out a high-pitched, tragic whimper.

”Another one,” Paul gasped, his voice trembling as he practically threw the paper onto Elias’s desk. ”That is Sam Goody. They just canceled our pending order for sixty thousand physical units of ’Creep’. They claim it’s a ’corporate restructuring of shelf space’. Elias, that’s the fifth major retail chain this week! Tower Records is holding steady because of your extortion contract, but every other independent and mid-tier record store on the East Coast is actively refusing our shipments!”

Owen Wilson, who was sitting cross-legged on the vintage leather sofa attempting to meditate, opened one eye. ”The vibes in the distribution sector are incredibly toxic right now, man. It’s like the universe is putting up a massive, bureaucratic stop sign.”

Elias did not flinch. He picked up the fax from Sam Goody, his eyes scanning the corporate jargon with clinical detachment.

”It is not the universe, Owen,” Elias murmured, his baritone voice a smooth, unbothered purr that cut through Paul’s rising hysteria. ”It is Jimmy Iovine.”

”The guy from Interscope?!” Paul shrieked, gripping the edges of his own hair. ”The guy you basically threw out of this office last week?!”

”Precisely,” Elias nodded, dropping the fax into a nearby trash can. ”I rejected his predatory three-hundred-and-sixty-degree buyout and exposed his internal liquidity crisis. Jimmy is a titan of the old guard. He cannot allow an independent teenager to dictate the terms of the market. He has utilized his vast institutional leverage to threaten the regional retail distributors. If they stock Sovereign Media products, Jimmy will pull Interscope’s entire gangsta rap and grunge catalog from their shelves.”

Paul fell to his knees on the carpet, clutching his clipboard to his chest like a shield. ”We are dead. We are legally and financially deceased! ’Creep’ is the most requested video on MTV right now! Millions of kids are seeing it, they want to buy it, but they physically cannot find the CD anywhere because Jimmy has blockaded the entire country! We have hundreds of thousands of CDs sitting in our manufacturing warehouse doing absolutely nothing! We are choking on our own inventory!”

Deep within Elias’s neural architecture, the digital loan shark awoke, absolutely indifferent to the syndicate’s blockade.

Elias felt the microscopic sting as his liquid cash dropped to $230,910.00. He stood up, moving with the slow, lethal grace of an apex predator. He didn’t look defeated. He looked deeply, profoundly entertained.

”Get off the floor, Paul,” Elias commanded flawlessly. ”Tears do not generate revenue. If the music industry has barricaded the front door, we will simply use the service elevator belonging to the fashion industry.”

Elias walked over to the massive glass whiteboard mounted on the wall. It was covered in a complex, terrifying web of interconnected corporate portfolios. He picked up a black marker and drew a thick, aggressive line connecting the ”Music Division” directly to the ”LVMH Fragrance Campaign.”

”The LVMH global campaign starring myself and Cindy Crawford launches its physical inventory in three days,” Elias stated, his mind operating at a hyper-accelerated capitalist frequency. ”The high-end department stores—Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman—will be fully stocked with the new hundred-and-fifty-dollar perfume.”

”Okay,” Paul sniffled, slowly standing up. ”But what does perfume have to do with our music embargo?”

”Everything,” Elias smiled, a dark, devastatingly handsome smirk that signaled impending financial doom for someone else. ”We are going to execute a cross-pollination maneuver. We are going to turn the most exclusive luxury department stores in America into our own private, heavily guarded record shops.”

Elias walked back to his desk and picked up the heavy receiver of his landline phone. He dialed a direct, highly restricted international number for the LVMH executive offices in Paris.

He needed to manipulate a European conglomerate. He needed the ultimate pitch.

[CHA-CHING!]

The skill coated his vocal cords, turning his natural baritone into a weapon of mass psychological manipulation.

The line clicked. ”LVMH Executive Office. Pierre Dubois speaking.”

Pierre was a senior vice president of marketing at LVMH. He was a man who breathed luxury, drank vintage Bordeaux, and possessed an incredibly sharp, ruthless corporate mind. He was not a fool to be easily bullied.

”Pierre. Bonjour,” Elias purred, his voice radiating expensive, untouchable confidence.

”Ah, Monsieur van Kempen,” Pierre replied, his tone smooth but guarded. ”The face of our spring campaign. To what do I owe the pleasure? We are currently finalizing the logistics for the North American retail launch.”

”I am calling to offer you a massive, unprecedented enhancement to your logistical rollout, Pierre,” Elias began, leaning back in his chair, casually inspecting his fingernails. ”I want LVMH to modify the interior packaging of the new fragrance. I want you to insert one physical CD copy of my hit single, ’Creep’, into every single box, entirely free of charge to the consumer. We will brand it as an ’Exclusive Vibe Enhancer’.”

There was a long, heavy silence on the line from Paris.

When Pierre finally spoke, his voice was laced with a chilling, highly intelligent skepticism.

”Monsieur van Kempen,” Pierre said slowly, ”this is absurd. We are LVMH. We sell luxury fragrance at one hundred and fifty dollars a bottle. We are not a discount record store. Why would we dilute our brand prestige by stuffing cheap plastic CDs into our handcrafted packaging?”

Pierre paused, the gears of his corporate mind turning rapidly. ”Wait. I read the Wall Street Journal. Your music label is currently facing a massive retail embargo orchestrated by Interscope Records. You cannot physically distribute your song in the United States.”

Pierre let out a dry, knowing chuckle. ”You are not offering me an ’enhancer’, Elias. You are attempting to use LVMH’s elite supply chain to bypass an American music blockade. You want us to foot the logistical bill to act as your private courier service. We are not fools.”

Paul Rudd, listening on the speakerphone, squeezed his eyes shut in terror. The gig was up. The executive had seen right through the trap.

Elias van Kempen did not panic. He did not deny it. He smiled.

This was the Win-Win Extortion. You do not threaten a smart man; you simply show him a pile of money he cannot reach without your permission.

”Tentu saja, Pierre,” Elias purred seamlessly, his Master Pitch skill injecting lethal logic into every syllable. (Of course, Pierre.) ”Aku adalah parasit kapitalis. Aku murni menggunakan truk pengiriman mewahmu untuk menghindari Jimmy Iovine.” (I am a capitalist parasite. I am purely using your luxury delivery trucks to bypass Jimmy Iovine.)

Pierre was momentarily stunned by the sheer, unapologetic honesty.

”Tapi mari kita lihat angkanya, Pierre,” Elias continued, his voice dropping to a hypnotic, predatory rumble. (But let us look at the numbers, Pierre.) ”Lagu ’Creep’ saat ini mendominasi rotasi utama di MTV. Ada sepuluh juta remaja Amerika yang kelaparan, menangis, dan mengamuk karena mereka tidak bisa menemukan laguku di toko kaset hari ini.” (The song ’Creep’ currently dominates heavy rotation on MTV. There are ten million American teenagers starving, crying, and raging because they cannot find my song in record stores today.)

Elias leaned forward, resting his elbows on the mahogany desk.

Elias asked softly. (If Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue become the only places on earth that possess that physical CD... and that CD is locked inside your perfume box... what do you think will happen?)

Silence on the line.

”Remaja-remaja itu tidak akan peduli dengan wangi parfummu,” Elias stated flawlessly, delivering the mathematical kill shot. (Those teenagers will not care about the scent of your perfume.) (They will whine to their parents, they will shatter their savings, and they will completely sell out your one-hundred-and-fifty-dollar perfume in a matter of hours, ONLY to tear open the box and take my CD.)

Elias let the reality of the situation sink into the Parisian executive’s mind.

”Aku menggunakan truk pengirimanmu, ya,” Elias concluded quietly. (I am using your delivery trucks, yes.) ”Tapi aku baru saja memberimu monopoli absolut atas seluruh dompet remaja Amerika. Kau akan mencetak rekor penjualan kuartalan tertinggi dalam sejarah LVMH. Deal?” (But I have just given you an absolute monopoly over the entire wallet of the American teenager. You will print the highest quarterly sales record in LVMH history. Deal?)

In his luxurious office in Paris, Pierre Dubois sat perfectly still.

A single, massive bead of perspiration—a highly visible, corporate sweatdrop of sheer realization—formed on his temple and rolled down his cheek. He hated Elias van Kempen. He deeply loathed the arrogance of the teenage hustler.

But Elias was absolutely, terrifyingly correct. The artificial scarcity created by the music blockade had turned Elias’s CD into digital gold. If LVMH bundled it, they wouldn’t just be selling fragrance; they would be selling the cure to a cultural pandemic. The profit margins would be catastrophic.

Corporate greed completely overrode brand prestige.

”You are a monster, Monsieur van Kempen,” Pierre whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of disgust and profound awe. ”A horrifying, beautiful monster.”

”I prefer the term ’Synergy Consultant’,” Elias corrected smoothly.

”Fine,” Pierre gritted his teeth. ”But LVMH will not pay to transport your plastic discs. If you want them in our boxes, they must be at our central packaging facility in Lyon, France, by tomorrow morning. If they are late, we ship without them.”

”They will be there,” Elias promised, his dark eyes gleaming. ”Have a highly profitable day, Pierre.”

Elias hung up the phone.

Paul Rudd was staring at Elias, his mouth hanging open so wide it looked unhinged. ”You... you just convinced one of the biggest luxury brands in the world to become our bootleg record distributor. They are going to sell our music in Neiman Marcus.”

”The blockade is broken,” Elias stated, standing up from his desk. He didn’t waste a single second on celebration. Logistics were ticking. ”Paul. Contact the Sovereign manufacturing warehouse. Tell them to load one hundred thousand physical units of the ’Creep’ single onto pallets immediately.”

Elias pulled his checkbook from his desk drawer. He had to burn cash to make cash.

”Then, call the Los Angeles International freight terminal,” Elias commanded, tearing a check from the book with surgical precision. ”Charter a private 747 cargo plane. I want those pallets flying to Lyon, France, tonight.”

Paul looked at the check Elias slid across the desk. It was made out for fifteen thousand dollars.

”Elias, fifteen grand?!” Paul gasped, clutching his chest. ”That’s... that’s so much liquid capital! We just got stable!”

”It is a fifteen-thousand-dollar battering ram to smash Jimmy Iovine’s teeth in,” Elias corrected flawlessly, slipping his hands into his pockets. ”Execute the order, Paul. We are going to war in a perfume aisle.”

Deep within his mind, the system roared, showering him with the golden light of shameless success.

As Paul scrambled out of the office to charter the cargo plane, Elias walked to the large window overlooking the sun-baked Hollywood lot. His liquid cash had taken a hit, dropping down to $215,910.00, but his infrastructure was invincible.

He smiled. He couldn’t wait to see the look on Jimmy Iovine’s face when the music industry realized they had been completely bypassed by a glass bottle.
