Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The Runway Emancipation

Mid-June 1993. The acoustic-glass office of Sovereign Media should have been a sanctuary of triumph. MTV was playing ”Creep” on heavy rotation, the polycarbonate presses in the Valley were melting plastic into gold, and David Geffen’s massive distribution trucks were preparing to flood North America with Elias van Kempen’s debut single.

But as Elias sat behind his mahogany desk, the atmosphere in the room was suffocatingly bleak.

Cindy Crawford was sitting on the vintage leather sofa, her face buried in her hands. The undisputed queen of the 90s Runway Mafia, a woman who routinely intimidated billionaires with a single, arched eyebrow, was shaking with quiet, frustrated sobs.

”They froze everything, Elias,” Cindy whispered, her voice thick with exhaustion and disbelief. ”My personal checking accounts. My trust. They sent injunctions to Revlon, Pepsi, and Vogue, demanding they halt all outstanding payments. John Casablancas filed an emergency breach-of-contract lawsuit this morning. He’s claiming my appearance in your music video was an unauthorized commercial endorsement that violated my exclusivity clause with Elite Model Management.”

Elias did not offer empty platitudes. He did not rush over to pat her back. He sat perfectly still, his dark eyes turning into flat, terrifying voids of absolute, predatory calculation.

When a playboy operates in the light, he is charming. When his empire—and the women who choose to stand within it—is threatened, he becomes something else entirely. The Devoted Lover protocol engaged, masking a lethal, sociopathic rage beneath a veneer of aristocratic calm.

”Casablancas is making an example of you,” Elias diagnosed clinically, his baritone voice a low, dangerous rumble. ”He is terrified that if the biggest supermodel on earth can bypass his agency to work directly with Sovereign Media, the rest of his roster will realize they don’t need to pay him a twenty percent commission to exist.”

”I can’t even pay the maintenance fees on my apartment,” Cindy choked out, wiping a stray tear from her flawless cheek, hating her own vulnerability. ”He has an army of corporate lawyers, Elias. They are going to bleed me dry in litigation until I am forced to crawl back and sign a contract extension just to afford groceries.”

”You will not crawl back to anyone, Cindy,” Elias stated. It wasn’t a comfort; it was an absolute law of physics.

Elias turned his head, his gaze slicing across the room to where his assistant was furiously sorting through faxes.

”Paul,” Elias commanded.

Paul Rudd snapped to attention, dropping a stack of papers. ”Yes, Elias?”

”Go to the subterranean vault. Open the master safe,” Elias ordered smoothly, standing up and adjusting the cuffs of his dark, tailored blazer. ”Pack two hundred thousand dollars in unmarked, banded hundreds into the aluminum Halliburton briefcase. Then, book us a flight to New York. We leave in two hours.”

Paul’s jaw unhinged. The color completely drained from his face, leaving him looking like a terrified ghost.

”Two... two hundred thousand dollars?!” Paul shrieked, his voice cracking into a hyperventilating squeal. ”Elias, that is a third of our entire liquid cash reserve! You fought a professional boxer for that money! I nearly died in a dive bar for that money! You cannot just put two hundred grand in a carry-on bag! We need an armored truck! We need armed guards! If the TSA opens that bag, they are going to assume we are funding an international cartel!”

”The TSA is concerned with weapons, Paul, not capitalism,” Elias replied flawlessly, walking around the desk and offering a hand to Cindy. ”Pack the capital. I am going to buy a supermodel.”

Deep within his cerebral cortex, the digital loan shark aggressively logged the massive, impending extraction.

Elias ignored the phantom sting in his chest. Money was merely ammunition, and he was about to go to war.

Forty-eight hours later. Manhattan.

The VIP boardroom inside the Pierre Hotel overlooked Central Park. It was an opulent space of dark wood paneling, heavy crystal chandeliers, and leather chairs that smelled of old money and generational wealth. Elias had spent five hundred dollars renting the room for a single hour, a micro-transaction that deeply annoyed him but was necessary for the psychological theater to come.

Paul Rudd stood by the window, sweating profusely, clutching the aluminum briefcase to his chest as if it contained the nuclear launch codes.

At exactly 2:00 PM, the heavy mahogany doors swung open.

John Casablancas, the legendary, tyrannical founder of Elite Model Management, strolled into the room. He was a man who radiated European arrogance, wearing a bespoke Italian suit, his hair swept back, his eyes carrying the smug superiority of a man who owned the careers of the most beautiful women on earth. He was flanked by a single, sharp-looking corporate attorney holding a thick stack of legal injunctions.

”Mr. van Kempen,” Casablancas greeted, his tone dripping with condescension. He didn’t offer to shake hands. He walked to the head of the long conference table and tossed his legal folders onto the polished wood. ”I must admit, when your assistant called for a settlement meeting, I expected you to bring a lawyer. Not just a terrified bag boy.”

Paul let out a muffled whimper, hugging the briefcase tighter.

Elias sat at the opposite end of the table, entirely relaxed, his hands resting elegantly on the armrests of his chair.

”I do not employ lawyers to have conversations I can manage myself, John,” Elias smiled, a dark, perfectly calibrated expression of sociopathic charm. ”Have a seat. Let us discuss the financial hostage situation you have created regarding Cindy Crawford.”

Casablancas laughed, a harsh, dismissive sound. He pulled out a chair and sat down, leaning forward to intimidate the teenager.

”There is no discussion, kid,” Casablancas sneered. ”Cindy violated the exclusivity parameters of her agency contract. She participated in a commercial broadcast—your little MTV video—without Elite’s authorization. The injunction stands. Her accounts remain frozen until she signs a public apology, agrees to a five-year contract extension with Elite, and Sovereign Media pays my agency two million dollars in punitive damages for tortious interference. You played a stupid game in Los Angeles, Elias. Welcome to New York.”

It was a brilliant, iron-clad legal chokehold. Casablancas wasn’t acting out of emotion; he was using the American judicial system as a blunt instrument to crush a rebellion.

Elias didn’t blink. He needed to find the structural flaw in the titan’s armor.

He mentally engaged the system, sacrificing his points to tear down the agency boss’s financial walls.

[CHA-CHING!]

A translucent, radioactive-red grid snapped over Casablancas, slicing directly into the legal folders on the table and decrypting the hidden financial data attached to the executive’s personal and corporate ledgers. The system ripped through the numbers, projecting the raw, terrifying truth directly into Elias’s retinas.

[SCAN COMPLETE. Elias’s eyes darkened with absolute, terrifying capitalist joy. The red grid vanished.

Casablancas wasn’t an untouchable titan. He was a desperate man drowning in offshore tax fraud, using Cindy’s injunction as a smokescreen to project strength while his house burned down.

”Two million dollars in punitive damages,” Elias mused softly, leaning forward and resting his elbows on the polished mahogany table. ”That is a very aggressive number, John. Especially for a man who is currently seventy-two hours away from a federal tax indictment.”

Casablancas froze. The smug, condescending smile instantly vanished from his lips. His corporate lawyer frowned, looking confusedly at his boss.

”I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Casablancas replied, his voice suddenly tight, the first hint of genuine panic bleeding into his tone.

Elias deployed his ’Lifestyle Deduction’ alibi flawlessly, weaving a terrifying narrative of corporate espionage.

”Did you really think I would invite you into this room without having my forensic accountants run a full, aggressive audit on your offshore holdings?” Elias whispered, his voice a lethal, silken blade. ”You have been routing Elite’s European revenues through a series of unregistered shell companies in Nassau. You have a massive, glaring hole in your domestic tax ledger. If you don’t inject one hundred and eighty-five thousand dollars into your operating account by this Friday, the IRS automated flagging system will trigger a full, agonizing federal audit. They will freeze your agency, seize your assets, and you will spend the next ten years wearing an orange jumpsuit.”

A massive, cartoonish sweatdrop materialized on Casablancas’s forehead, rolling rapidly down his temple. All the blood drained from his face. He stared at the nineteen-year-old, utterly paralyzed. The kid hadn’t just found a loophole; he had found the nuclear launch codes to Casablancas’s entire life.

”You... you stole my confidential banking records,” Casablancas choked out, his hands beginning to shake. ”That’s a felony!”

”I merely observed a pattern of extreme financial inefficiency, John,” Elias smiled shamelessly. ”Now, you can attempt to fight me in federal court over Cindy’s contract, while the IRS dismantles your agency piece by piece. Or... we can engage in a highly rational, mutually beneficial transaction.”

Elias didn’t look back. He simply snapped his fingers. ”Paul. The capital.”

Paul Rudd whimpered, stumbling forward. He placed the heavy aluminum briefcase on the mahogany table right in front of Casablancas and popped the latches.

He flipped the lid open.

Two hundred thousand dollars in raw, banded, untraceable hundred-dollar bills stared up at the agency titan.

The corporate lawyer’s jaw dropped. Casablancas stopped breathing. He stared at the mountain of physical liquidity, his desperate, terrified greed completely overriding his pride.

”Two hundred thousand dollars,” Elias dictated, his voice ringing with dictatorial finality. ”In cash. Right now. More than enough to quietly plug your offshore tax hole and save you from a federal indictment. You take the money, you walk away clean, and nobody ever hears about the Bahamas.”

It was the ultimate Win-Win Parasite strategy. Elias wasn’t asking for a favor. He was offering a life raft to a drowning man, and the price of the ticket was his Empress.

”What do you want?” Casablancas whispered, his eyes never leaving the cash. He knew the math. Losing Cindy Crawford was a massive blow to his ego and his future revenue. But keeping Cindy meant fighting a war of attrition with a sociopathic teenager while the IRS sent him to federal prison.

It wasn’t a choice. It was a mathematical surrender.

Elias reached into his blazer and pulled out a single, impeccably drafted legal document. He slid it across the table, covering the stack of injunction folders Casablancas had brought.

”You are going to sign a full, unconditional release of Cindy Crawford’s exclusivity contract with Elite Model Management,” Elias commanded softly. ”You will drop the injunction immediately. Sovereign Media assumes one hundred percent of her global representation rights. You lose the supermodel, John. But you get to keep your freedom.”

Casablancas looked at the contract. He looked at the two hundred thousand dollars in cash. His chest heaved with a mixture of bitter hatred and overwhelming relief. He had built his entire career on exploiting the young and naive, but he was currently being dismantled by a kid who understood the leverage of liquidity better than any Wall Street banker.

With a tragic, pathetic groan, Casablancas snatched his expensive fountain pen from his breast pocket. He signed the unconditional release, his signature aggressive and shaking.

He slammed the pen down, reached out, and slammed the aluminum briefcase shut, dragging it toward his chest.

”You’re going to burn in hell for this, kid,” Casablancas hissed, standing up with his newly acquired survival funds.

”I am already acclimatized to the heat, John,” Elias offered a polite, devastatingly charming nod. ”Enjoy your tax payments.”

Casablancas and his thoroughly confused lawyer practically sprinted out of the boardroom, clutching the briefcase of cash.

Paul Rudd collapsed into a leather chair, exhaling a breath he had been holding for twenty minutes. ”Elias... you just spent two hundred thousand dollars... in cash. We are almost broke again! You hate spending money! You made me negotiate a ten-cent discount on our coffee beans yesterday!”

”I despise wasting capital on depreciating assets, Paul,” Elias corrected, picking up the signed contract and folding it neatly into his jacket. ”Cindy Crawford is not a depreciating asset. She is a global monopoly. Now, collect your composure. We have a hostage to release.”

Elias walked out of the boardroom and down the plushly carpeted hallway of the hotel.

Standing near the elevator banks, wearing a simple trench coat and large dark sunglasses to hide from the paparazzi, was Cindy Crawford. She looked up as Elias approached, her beautiful face tight with anxiety.

”Elias?” she asked, her voice trembling slightly. ”Did you talk to him? Are we going to court? Because my lawyer says—”

Elias didn’t say a word. He reached into his jacket, pulled out the signed, unconditional release from Elite Model Management, and handed it to her.

Cindy took the paper. Her eyes scanned the legal jargon, landing on Casablancas’s unmistakable, shaking signature at the bottom.

”He... he released me?” Cindy gasped, her eyes widening in absolute shock. She looked up at Elias, completely bewildered. ”How? John Casablancas doesn’t release anyone. He would rather destroy a career than lose a percentage. How did you get him to sign this?”

”I engaged in a highly rational discussion regarding his corporate tax liabilities, Cindy,” Elias murmured smoothly, slipping his hands into his pockets.

”Elias,” Cindy whispered, stepping closer to him, her eyes searching his flawlessly calm face. She knew how much Elias hoarded his cash. She knew he fought in underground boxing rings just to avoid borrowing money from banks. ”How much did you pay him?”

Elias looked at her, his dark eyes softening just a fraction, revealing the fierce, protective core of the Devoted Lover beneath the shameless capitalist.

”The exact amount is irrelevant,” Elias replied softly. ”You are no longer bound by a slave contract. You do not belong to John Casablancas. You do not belong to a corporate agency. You belong to Sovereign Media. And I protect what is mine.”

Cindy’s breath caught in her throat. A tear, this one born of profound, overwhelming relief and gratitude, slipped down her cheek. She didn’t care about the money. She realized that the most ruthless, tight-fisted hustler in Hollywood had just burned a massive fortune simply to buy her freedom.

She stepped forward, throwing her arms around his neck, burying her face in the shoulder of his charcoal suit. It wasn’t the calculated embrace of a supermodel; it was the raw, genuine loyalty of a woman who had finally found a king capable of defending his queens.

”Thank you,” she whispered fiercely against his neck.

”You’re welcome, Cindy,” Elias murmured, wrapping his arms around her waist, holding the apex supermodel of the 90s in the hallway of the Pierre Hotel.

Deep within his mind, the system rang out, sealing the absolute loyalty of the Runway Mafia.

Elias smiled into her hair. He was $200,000 poorer in cash, but his empire was now infinitely stronger.
