Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The Supply Chain Hijack

Late May 1993. The Los Angeles night air was surprisingly cool against the hot asphalt of the Sovereign Studios lot. Elias van Kempen had just stepped out of the newly installed executive shower, the lingering scent of boxing liniment washed away, replaced by the crisp, clean aroma of an unbothered billionaire. He wore his faded vintage leather jacket over a fresh white t-shirt, looking completely refreshed despite having knocked a 220-pound professional fighter into a coma less than an hour ago.

Inside the acoustic-glass corner office, the atmosphere was slightly less serene.

Paul Rudd was currently curled into the fetal position on the vintage leather sofa, clutching the heavy black canvas duffel bag to his chest as if it contained a live nuclear warhead.

”Elias,” Paul whispered, his eyes darting frantically around the shadows of the empty warehouse. ”We have four hundred thousand dollars in this bag. Four. Hundred. Thousand. I feel like a cartel mule. Every single car that drives down Sunset Boulevard sounds like a hit squad coming to take our money. Why didn’t we just deposit it in a night drop?”

Owen Wilson ambled into the office, chewing lazily on a toothpick, completely immune to Paul’s existential terror. ”Because, man, banks are just institutions that trap your fluid energy. You gotta keep the capital mobile. Feel the weight of the universe in your hands.”

”I am feeling the weight of a felony charge, Owen!” Paul shrieked, hugging the bag tighter.

”Physical liquidity provides absolute operational agility, Paul,” Elias murmured, stepping behind his modular steel desk and adjusting his cuffs. ”Banks require forty-eight hours to clear a cash deposit of this magnitude to prevent money laundering flags. I do not have forty-eight hours to wait for permission to use my own capital.”

Before Paul could argue the merits of the federal banking system, the heavy, grating mechanical screech of the office fax machine sliced through the quiet night.

Paul flinched violently, nearly dropping the duffel bag.

Elias didn’t rush. He walked over to the machine and pulled the curling thermal paper from the tray. He scanned the document, his dark, striking eyes turning into flat, unreadable voids.

The fax was from Gary, the perpetually stressed night manager of the Sovereign Manufacturing CD plant in the Valley.

Mr. van Kempen. We have a catastrophic situation. The primary chemical vendor just pulled our order for raw polycarbonate. I called their dispatch, and they told me their corporate office canceled our account. They won’t ship us another pellet of plastic. The hoppers are empty. The presses are shutting down. If we don’t get raw materials by tomorrow morning, we miss the weekend restock for Tower Records.

Elias slowly lowered the paper. The silence in the office was thick and heavy.

”What is it?” Paul gulped, sitting up and clutching the money bag. ”Did someone sue us? Is it Jimmy Iovine? Did he send lawyers?”

”He didn’t send lawyers, Paul. He sent an embargo,” Elias stated smoothly, his baritone voice a dark, velvet rumble that completely masked any sign of panic. ”Jimmy Iovine realized he couldn’t stop the retail demand for ’Creep’, and he couldn’t block the MTV broadcast. So he has deployed the syndicate’s ultimate weapon. He has pressured the chemical suppliers to cut off our raw materials. Without polycarbonate, we cannot manufacture compact discs. Without CDs, we have no product to sell.”

”He choked the supply chain,” Owen muttered, his relaxed posture stiffening slightly. ”That’s dark, man. That’s some serious corporate warfare.”

”We’re dead!” Paul wailed, dropping his head onto the duffel bag. ”We have all this cash, but we have nothing to sell! The pop dictators won! We have to surrender, Elias! Let’s just take the money and buy an island!”

”An island is an illiquid asset, Paul,” Elias corrected flawlessly, walking back to his desk. He mentally engaged the digital loan shark, unbothered by the daily extortion.

[CHA-CHING!][SYSTEM WARNING: DAILY MAINTENANCE FEE DEDUCTION INITIATED.][DEDUCTING -$50.00 USD FROM LIQUID CASH RESERVE.]

His balance ticked down to $798,340.00. The bleeding never stopped. It was time to deploy his newly acquired war chest.

”The domestic chemical suppliers are cowards, beholden to the major labels,” Elias analyzed, leaning against his desk. ”However, polycarbonate is a global commodity. It arrives daily on cargo ships from Asia. The major labels buy it through established corporate contracts. We are going to bypass the contracts entirely. Grab the bag, Paul. We are going to the Port of Long Beach.”

”The Port of Long Beach?!” Paul shrieked, his voice cracking into a hyperventilating squeal. ”At midnight?! Elias, that is a literal mob territory! People disappear in those shipping containers! We cannot walk into a commercial dockyard carrying a duffel bag full of four hundred thousand dollars in cash! We will be murdered for our shoes!”

”Your shoes are worth exactly twenty-five dollars, Paul. Nobody is going to murder you for them,” Elias said, a cold, predatory smirk playing on his lips. ”And we are not walking into a dockyard to get robbed. We are walking in to execute a hostile purchase order.”

An hour and a half later, the rusted, asthmatic 1984 Honda Civic shuddered down the desolate, sodium-lit access roads of the Port of Long Beach.

The atmosphere was overwhelmingly industrial and deeply intimidating. Massive, towering steel cranes loomed in the darkness like mechanical dinosaurs. Mountains of rusted shipping containers stretched into the distance, forming a labyrinth of metal and shadow. The air smelled of diesel exhaust, salt water, and aggressive, blue-collar exhaustion.

Paul Rudd was hyperventilating in the back seat, clutching the black duffel bag so tightly his knuckles were white. Owen Wilson stared out the window, looking unusually alert.

Elias navigated the maze of containers with the serene, unbothered grace of a man pulling into a country club. He pulled the Civic up to a loading bay bathed in harsh yellow light, where a massive eighteen-wheeler was idling. A crew of rough-looking dockworkers were unloading pallets of raw, unmarked plastic pellets from a shipping container.

Standing near the truck, holding a heavy clipboard and yelling loudly into a brick-sized cellular phone, was a burly man in a heavy work coat.

Elias cut the engine. The Civic died with a pathetic, rattling cough.

”Stay close to the vehicle, Owen,” Elias commanded smoothly. ”Paul. Bring the capital.”

Paul let out a tragic whimper, slinging the heavy bag over his shoulder. He followed Elias out of the car, practically vibrating with terror as the dockworkers stopped unloading to stare at the teenager in the vintage leather jacket and the sweating, panicked assistant holding a duffel bag.

Elias didn’t hesitate. He walked directly toward the burly man with the clipboard.

The man snapped his phone shut, glaring at Elias with the hardened, aggressive suspicion of a blue-collar distributor who didn’t like surprises.

”Hey, kid. You lost?” the distributor barked, pointing a thick finger toward the access road. ”This is a restricted commercial zone. No civilian vehicles past the checkpoint. Get back in your clown car before I have security tow it into the ocean.”

Elias didn’t flinch. He didn’t puff out his chest. He stopped exactly three feet away from the man, locking his dark, bottomless eyes onto the distributor’s irritated face.

”I am Elias van Kempen. Managing Partner of Sovereign Media,” Elias stated, his baritone voice effortlessly commanding the chaotic noise of the loading dock. ”And I am here to relieve you of your logistical burden.”

The distributor let out a harsh, barking laugh. ”Sovereign Media? Never heard of it. I’m Vince, and I don’t sell to kids. These pallets are high-grade polycarbonate. They belong to a corporate broker who supplies the major pressing plants in the Valley. The contract is locked. Now beat it.”

Vince turned his back, dismissing the teenager entirely.

Elias didn’t move. He needed to audit the vulnerability of the supply chain instantly. He mentally engaged the loan shark, sacrificing his points to tear down the distributor’s arrogant wall.

[CHA-CHING!]

The world instantly shifted. A translucent, radioactive-red grid snapped over Vince’s heavy coat, slicing directly into the clipboard he was holding and decrypting the shipping manifests and commercial invoices attached to the cargo.

The system ripped through the data, projecting the raw financial truth directly into Elias’s retinas.

[SCAN COMPLETE. THREAT ANALYSIS: RUTHLESS MIDDLEMAN COMMODITY BROKER.][VULNERABILITY 1: THE TARGET IS AN INDEPENDENT IMPORTER. THE CORPORATE BROKER PURCHASING IT WILL NOT DISBURSE FUNDS FOR TWO MONTHS.][CONCLUSION: THE DISTRIBUTOR IS EXPOSED TO SEVERE CASH-FLOW DELAYS. LIQUIDITY IS HIS PRIMARY MOTIVATOR.]

Elias’s eyes darkened with absolute, terrifying capitalist joy. The red grid vanished.

The man wasn’t a loyal soldier for Interscope. He was an independent mercenary waiting to get paid. And Elias was holding the biggest gun on the dock.

”Paul,” Elias murmured smoothly, not breaking his gaze from Vince’s back. ”Open the briefcase.”

Paul swallowed hard. He placed the heavy black duffel bag on a nearby wooden pallet and unzipped the main compartment.

The harsh yellow halogen light of the loading dock poured into the bag, illuminating row after row of banded, crisp hundred-dollar bills. Four hundred thousand dollars in raw, untraceable physical liquidity.

The dockworkers closest to the pallet stopped moving. Their jaws dropped.

Vince turned around, annoyed by the sudden silence. His eyes landed on the open duffel bag.

The distributor froze. All the blood drained from his face. He stared at the mountain of cash, his tough-guy facade completely shattering in the face of sheer, overwhelming purchasing power.

”What... what the hell is this?” Vince choked out, his voice cracking slightly. He looked at Elias, no longer seeing a teenager, but a terrifyingly wealthy, dangerously unpredictable entity. ”Are you cartel? I don’t move weight for the cartel, kid.”

Elias smiled. It was a dark, flawless, deeply shameless expression of a corporate predator cornering its prey.

”I am not a cartel, Vince. I am a highly motivated manufacturer,” Elias purred, stepping closer to the distributor. He used his ’Lifestyle Deduction’ alibi flawlessly to cover his system’s knowledge. ”I know how the independent import game works. You bring the cargo in, you sell it to the corporate brokers, and then you sit on a Net-60 invoice waiting for the major labels to cut a check. You are floating eighty-five thousand dollars of raw material on your own credit line for two months.”

Vance swallowed hard, a massive sweatdrop rolling down his temple. The kid was speaking his exact financial reality.

”It’s... it’s the cost of doing business with the big boys,” Vince muttered defensively.

”The big boys are inefficient,” Elias corrected, his voice a lethal, silken blade. ”I do not operate on a sixty-day delay. I operate on immediate, physical extraction.”

Elias reached into the duffel bag with a casual, unhurried elegance. He pulled out a thick, banded stack of hundreds. Ten thousand dollars. He pulled out another. Then another. He stacked them neatly onto Vince’s clipboard, right over the shipping manifest.

”One hundred and fifty thousand dollars,” Elias dictated, letting the astronomical number hang in the salty air.

Paul Rudd let out a high-pitched, tragic squeal. ”A hundred and fifty?! Elias, that’s almost half the bag! You’re paying double retail!”

Deep within Elias’s cerebral cortex, the digital loan shark aggressively logged the massive capital expenditure, thrilled by the sheer volume of the transaction.

[DEDUCTING -$150,000.00 USD FOR HOSTILE COMMODITY ACQUISITION AND LOGISTICAL EXTORTION.]

His liquid cash balance plummeted to a still-powerful $648,340.00.

Elias ignored the phantom sting in his chest. Overpaying for a single shipment was irrelevant when the survival of his entire distribution empire was at stake.

”I am paying a premium for speed, Paul,” Elias said, his eyes never leaving Vince. He leaned into the distributor’s personal space, completely dominating the older man with his suffocating, Playboy Alpha confidence.

”Seratus lima puluh ribu dolar,” Elias whispered, locking the trap. (One hundred and fifty thousand dollars.) ”Tunai. Malam ini. Bebas pajak. Tidak ada faktur, tidak ada masa tunggu enam puluh hari.” (Cash. Tonight. Tax-free. No invoices, no sixty-day waiting period.)

Vince stared at the cash sitting on his clipboard. His chest heaved. It was nearly double what the corporate brokers were going to pay him, and he wouldn’t have to wait two months to see the money. It was the easiest, most profitable flip of his entire career.

But he knew the risks. ”If the corporate brokers find out I sold their allocation out from under them... they’ll blacklist me from the port, kid.”

”They won’t find out,” Elias smiled, his tone shifting into a masterclass of absolute, shameless extortion. ”Because you are going to tell them the container was lost at sea during a severe storm. A tragic maritime disaster. You file the insurance claim, you collect the corporate payout, and you keep my hundred and fifty grand in a safe under your bed.”

Vince’s eyes widened to the size of saucers. The kid wasn’t just offering him a bribe; he was offering him a perfectly engineered insurance fraud loop to maximize his profit. It was a Win-Win Parasite strategy executed with terrifying, sociopathic brilliance.

”You’re... you’re a devil in a leather jacket,” Vince gasped, sweat pouring down his face as his greed completely overrode his fear of the major labels.

”I am your best client, Vince,” Elias corrected flawlessly. ”But the transaction requires immediate logistical compliance.”

Elias pointed a long finger at the idling eighteen-wheeler.

”You are going to tell your driver to lock the doors,” Elias commanded, his voice ringing with dictatorial finality. ”He is not driving to the corporate warehouse. He is going to follow my Honda Civic directly to the Sovereign Manufacturing plant in the Valley. And he is going to unload every single pellet of polycarbonate before sunrise.”

Vince looked at the cash. He looked at the unblinking, deadpan eyes of the teenager.

With a tragic, pathetic groan of a man utterly corrupted by raw capitalism, Vince swept the stacks of cash off his clipboard and shoved them deep into the pockets of his heavy work coat.

”Hey, Sully!” Vince yelled at his truck driver, abandoning his corporate loyalty in a heartbeat. ”Change of plans! We’re rerouting the freight to the Valley! Follow the kid in the blue Civic!”

The dockworkers immediately jumped into action, slamming the heavy container doors shut and securing the locks.

Paul Rudd quickly zipped the duffel bag shut, hugging it to his chest, looking like he was about to pass out from pure adrenaline. ”We just bought a truckload of stolen plastic. We are international smugglers, Elias.”

”We are preserving our manufacturing pipeline, Paul,” Elias murmured smoothly, turning on his heel and walking back toward the rusted car. ”Jimmy Iovine thought he could starve us out. Tomorrow morning, we will flood the market with fifty thousand new units.”

As Elias slid into the driver’s seat of the Civic, starting the struggling engine, the digital loan shark in his mind erupted in a glorious, golden symphony of triumph.

Elias felt the warm surge of digital capital flood his system. His CP balance ticked up to a secure 280. He was heavily armed.

The Civic pulled out of the loading dock, leading the massive, rumbling eighteen-wheeler out of the Port of Long Beach.

Elias van Kempen smiled into the darkness of the Los Angeles night. The Pop Dictators had tried to cut off his air supply. He had simply bought the oxygen tank. The war for the radio was over. It was time to conquer the shelves.
