Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The Fincher Acquisition

Late June 1993. The Los Angeles heat was baking the corrugated steel roof of the Sovereign Cinematic Props warehouse, turning the cavernous, 1920s-era building into a sweltering industrial oven.

Elias van Kempen stood in the center of the massive lot, wearing his signature vintage leather jacket over a crisp white t-shirt. He was completely immune to the rising temperature. His dark, striking eyes were fixed on the sprawling inventory that surrounded him: thousands of antique chairs, fake Victorian lampposts, decommissioned police cruisers, and racks of generic costumes he had aggressively seized months prior during an escrow bloodbath.

It was a physical manifestation of his empire. But to Elias’s hyper-calculating, sociopathic brain, it was currently a massive, dusty liability.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out his latest ledger.

He had just returned from New York, having successfully executed the hostile buyout of Cindy Crawford from John Casablancas. The sheer, overwhelming loyalty he had secured from the world’s biggest supermodel was a generational victory. However, the two hundred thousand dollars in physical cash required to finalize that emancipation had left a gaping, bleeding wound in his operational liquidity.

His cash reserves had plummeted from a formidable six hundred thousand down to $409,490.00.

To a normal teenager, four hundred grand was an unimaginable fortune. To Elias, who needed to feed the operational overhead of a music manufacturing plant, a property portfolio, and a growing roster of apex-tier female talent, it felt like standing on the edge of a cliff.

”We are sitting on dormant capital,” Elias murmured, his baritone voice echoing off a row of fake Roman pillars. ”A prop house that does not rent props is merely a museum of wasted equity.”

Owen Wilson ambled out from behind a stack of faux-marble statues, holding a half-eaten apple. He wore a faded, colorful button-down shirt, looking profoundly relaxed despite the suffocating heat of the warehouse.

”I don’t know, man,” Owen drawled, gesturing lazily toward a prop guillotine with his apple core. ”I think the aesthetic here is incredibly pure. It’s like a graveyard of Hollywood dreams. Very zen. You just sit here and let the cinematic ghosts wash over your aura.”

”I am not interested in washing my aura, Owen. I am interested in monetizing the ghosts,” Elias replied smoothly, not missing a beat. ”We have the physical infrastructure to shoot a film. We have Charlize Theron under an exclusive twenty-five percent management contract. I have secured the logistics and the talent. What I lack is the operational masochist willing to piece them together.”

”You mean a director?” Owen asked, taking another bite of his apple. ”Why don’t you just direct it, Elias? You basically boss everyone around anyway. You’re like a natural tyrant. I mean that in the most spiritually complimentary way possible.”

”Directing requires months of emotional hand-holding and standing in the sun,” Elias scoffed elegantly, adjusting his cuffs. ”I am a fiduciary. I construct the pipeline; I do not swim in the oil. We need an auteur. Someone who possesses absolute, brilliant visual clarity, but who is currently desperate enough to work for a micro-budget.”

Elias closed his ledger and slipped it into his jacket. His Photographic Memory effortlessly sifted through the current industry landscape of 1993, bypassing the established Spielberg and Scorsese tiers, filtering down to the bleeding, bruised casualties of the studio system.

His mind locked onto a specific target.

”David Fincher,” Elias smiled. It was a slow, incredibly dark expression of pure, predatory intent.

”The Alien 3 guy?” Owen winced, shaking his head. ”Oh, man. I heard the 20th Century Fox executives completely shredded his soul on that set. They locked him out of the editing room. They took his movie and turned it into a corporate jigsaw puzzle. The word on the street is his chi is absolutely pulverized. He hates Hollywood.”

”He doesn’t hate Hollywood, Owen. He hates executives,” Elias corrected, striding purposefully toward the exit. ”He is currently a wounded, cynical genius nursing a profound resentment toward studio interference. That makes him the perfect, exploitable asset. Start the car. We are going to a bar.”

The Burgundy Room was a notoriously dark, divey, and aggressively depressing bar tucked away in the shadows of Hollywood Boulevard. It smelled of stale beer, cheap cigarettes, and dashed artistic hopes.

It was the perfect sanctuary for a man trying to drink a studio out of his memory.

Elias and Owen stepped into the dim interior. Elias bypassed the cluster of struggling actors near the pool table, his commanding, unbothered presence parting the crowd like a knife through soft butter. He looked like an aristocratic playboy who had taken a wrong turn into the underworld.

Sitting alone at a sticky booth in the darkest corner of the room, staring into a half-empty glass of scotch, was David Fincher.

At thirty years old, Fincher looked exhausted. He wore a simple, dark t-shirt, his hair slightly disheveled. He possessed the intense, hyper-focused energy of a visionary, but it was currently buried under layers of deep, cynical burnout. After the catastrophic studio interference on Alien 3, he had famously sworn off feature films, retreating to the safety of directing music videos and commercials.

Elias didn’t wait for an invitation. He slid smoothly into the booth across from the director, resting his arms elegantly on the sticky table. Owen squeezed into the booth next to him, offering Fincher a chill, friendly nod.

Fincher slowly raised his eyes from his glass. He recognized Elias instantly. The kid from the Levi’s bathtub commercial.

”Van Kempen,” Fincher grunted, his voice laced with instant, reflexive hostility. He took a sip of his scotch. ”What the hell are you doing here? If you’re looking for commercial work, call my agent. I’m not pitching jeans to you over cheap booze.”

”I am not here for denim, David,” Elias replied, his voice a smooth, confident baritone that completely absorbed the director’s anger. He raised a hand, snapping his fingers at the bartender. ”The tab for this booth. Close it.”

The bartender walked over, slapping a greasy receipt onto the table. ”Hundred and twenty bucks, kid. He’s been drinking the top shelf.”

Deep in Elias’s cerebral cortex, the digital loan shark gleefully logged the capital execution.

Elias felt the sharp, agonizing sting of parting with a hundred and seventy dollars just to secure a conversation and pay his daily rent. His liquid cash dropped to $409,320.00. His jaw tightened for a fraction of a millisecond, but he smoothly pulled the cash from his pocket and dropped it onto the receipt without breaking eye contact with Fincher.

”I am buying your attention, David,” Elias stated, folding his hands together.

Fincher watched the cash disappear. He let out a harsh, cynical laugh. ”You’ve got deep pockets for a teenager. Or is Elite Management fronting your allowance?”

”I don’t have an allowance. I have an empire,” Elias smiled, a dark, utterly shameless expression. ”And I know exactly why you are drinking seventy-dollar scotch in a dive bar. 20th Century Fox ripped your heart out. You built a gothic, terrifying vision for Alien 3, and a committee of men in expensive suits hacked it to pieces in the editing bay to sell more popcorn. They treated you like a highly paid employee rather than an artist.”

Fincher’s eyes narrowed into dangerous, defensive slits. The wound was incredibly fresh. ”Careful, kid. You’re stepping on landmines.”

”I am mapping the minefield,” Elias corrected seamlessly. ”You swore you would never direct a feature film again because you refuse to be a puppet for a studio.”

”The studio executives totally fragmented your spiritual timeline, man,” Owen chimed in, leaning back against the vinyl booth and pointing a french fry at Fincher. ”They took your raw, cinematic chi and put it through a corporate blender. It’s no wonder your aura is completely blocked right now. You’re vibrating at a frequency of pure resentment.”

Fincher blinked, looking at Owen as if the blonde man had just dropped from a UFO. He looked back at Elias. ”Who the hell is this guy?”

”Owen is my Head of Logistics and occasional philosophical translator,” Elias answered smoothly. ”And he is entirely correct. You are vibrating with resentment. But resentment is a highly combustible fuel if piped into the right engine.”

Fincher sneered, leaning forward aggressively. ”And you’re here to tell me you’re the engine? You’re a sixteen-year-old catalog model. What are you going to do? Finance a movie with your pocket money?”

”Yes,” Elias said softly.

Fincher paused, genuinely thrown off guard by the sheer, unblinking certainty in the boy’s voice.

”Sovereign Media is launching a feature film division,” Elias continued, leaning into the table. He needed to crush the director’s skepticism completely. He needed the man to see the vision.

Elias mentally engaged the system.

[CHA-CHING!]

The air in the dark dive bar suddenly felt impossibly heavy. Elias didn’t raise his voice, but the psychological pressure he projected was staggering. He no longer looked like an arrogant teenager; he looked like a visionary studio mogul who held the keys to the kingdom.

”I am offering you a Win-Win Parasite, David,” Elias purred, his hypnotic, street-smart arrogance bleeding into every word. ”I possess a twenty-thousand-square-foot prop warehouse. I have unlimited access to vintage sets, lighting rigs, and costumes. I have Charlize Theron under an exclusive management contract. We have the physical infrastructure to shoot a visceral, atmospheric thriller for a fraction of the standard industry cost.”

Fincher ignored Owen’s nodding, his intense gaze locked entirely on Elias. ”A micro-budget indie. So what? You want me to direct it for peanuts while you play producer and tell me how to light the set?”

”I don’t care how you light the set, David,” Elias countered flawlessly, executing the ultimate pitch. ”I don’t care if you shoot a masterpiece or a two-hour meditation on existential dread. Because unlike Fox, I am not a frustrated artist trying to play director. I am a fiduciary. I only care about the profit margin.”

Elias leaned in, his voice dropping into a chilling, irresistible whisper.

”If you direct this film,” Elias offered, laying the ultimate bait, ”I will give you one hundred percent Final Cut Privilege. No studio notes. No test screening mandates. No executives looking over your shoulder in the editing bay. You build the movie exactly the way you see it in your head, and I will physically defend the doors of the editing room from anyone who tries to stop you.”

Fincher stopped breathing.

In Hollywood, ’Final Cut’ was the Holy Grail. It was a privilege reserved only for the gods of cinema—Spielberg, Kubrick, Coppola. For a director coming off a massive, highly publicized studio failure like Alien 3, being offered absolute creative control was an intoxicating, impossible fantasy.

”Final Cut,” Fincher repeated, his voice barely above a whisper, his cynical armor cracking violently. He looked at Elias, searching for the lie. ”Nobody gives Final Cut to a guy who just tanked a franchise. What’s the catch, kid? What’s the toll?”

Elias smiled. It was the smile of a true, unadulterated capitalist monster.

”The toll is thirty percent,” Elias dictated softly, his aura pulsing with absolute authority. ”Sovereign Media will take thirty percent of the Gross Backend receipts, and we retain absolute control over the distribution rights. You get to be the uncompromising artist, David. And I get to be the ruthless billionaire.”

Fincher stared at the teenager. A massive, highly visible sweatdrop rolled down his temple. The kid was offering him creative heaven, and charging him the most predatory interest rate in the history of cinema.

It was extortion. But it was honest extortion. Elias wasn’t pretending to be his friend. He was openly admitting he was a parasite, feeding on Fincher’s desperate need for creative control. The fact that Elias was so openly greedy actually made the offer of artistic freedom entirely believable. Elias wouldn’t meddle in the art, because Elias only cared about the math.

”Thirty percent of the gross,” Fincher choked out, running a hand through his hair. ”If the movie hits, you’ll make more than the entire production budget. You’re bleeding me before we even have a script.”

”I am purchasing your freedom, David. Freedom is expensive,” Elias corrected smoothly, offering a polite tilt of his head. ”You can decline. You can go back to shooting soda commercials and letting ad agencies tell you what color the sunset should be. Or you can shake my hand, walk into my warehouse tomorrow morning, and shoot a masterpiece that actually belongs to you.”

The silence in the dive bar stretched. The clinking of pool balls in the background felt miles away.

Fincher looked at his empty glass of scotch. He thought about the agonizing, soul-crushing boardroom meetings at Fox. He looked up at Elias van Kempen, recognizing the sheer, undeniable reality that this teenager was the only executive in Los Angeles who actually understood how to let a director work.

With a slow, reluctant, but fiercely determined movement, David Fincher reached across the sticky table.

”You’re a sociopath, Van Kempen,” Fincher muttered, a dark, manic spark returning to his eyes. ”But at least you’re an honest one. I’m in.”

Elias reached out and gripped the director’s hand. The handshake was firm, sealing the pact.

As they broke the handshake, the digital loan shark inside Elias’s brain erupted in a massive, golden symphony of triumph.

Elias stood up, adjusting his vintage leather jacket. His CP had recovered to a secure 325 points.

”So,” Fincher asked, looking up from the booth. ”What’s the project? Give me a script. Something dark. Something that will make the studios sick to their stomachs.”

Elias offered a slow, predatory smirk.

”I don’t have a script yet, David,” Elias admitted with shameless grace. ”But rest assured, tomorrow morning, we are going to dive into the trash bin of Hollywood and pull out a monster.”
