Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The VIP Greed Trap

Early May 1993. The VIP suite at the Beverly Hills Hotel was a sanctuary of hushed, terrifyingly expensive luxury, bathed in the soft, golden light of the California morning.

Elias van Kempen lay on a sprawling, king-sized bed adorned with Egyptian cotton sheets. For the past twelve hours, he had been officially ”unconscious,” recovering from a dramatically orchestrated, Oscar-worthy collapse on the LVMH red carpet.

He slowly fluttered his eyes open, executing the performance of an exhausted, overworked corporate martyr with absolute, shameless perfection.

”He’s waking up,” a fierce, distinctly South African voice whispered.

Charlize Theron was sitting on the edge of the mattress, her sharp, stunning features softened by genuine concern. She was holding a cold, damp cloth. Standing on the opposite side of the bed, holding a cup of steaming, premium chamomile tea, was Cindy Crawford. The reigning queen of the Runway Mafia looked entirely stripped of her usual territorial venom.

The two apex predators, who had been seconds away from a catastrophic, media-fueled catfight the night before, were now completely united in their maternal panic over the teenage mogul’s health.

”Elias, darling,” Cindy murmured, setting the tea down on the mahogany nightstand and gently brushing a stray lock of dark hair from his forehead. ”You gave us an absolute heart attack. The doctors said it was severe dehydration and exhaustion. You have to stop running your empire like a machine. You are human.”

Elias offered a faint, devastatingly handsome smile that didn’t quite reach his dark, calculating eyes. He didn’t feel human. He felt like a balance sheet that was currently bleeding operational capital.

”The machine does not pause for biology, Cindy,” Elias whispered, his baritone voice purposely kept to a low, gravelly rasp. He slowly sat up, letting the silk sheets fall away from his chest. ”But your combined presence is a highly effective restorative treatment.”

Charlize rolled her eyes, though a relieved smile broke across her face. ”You are an absolute idiot, Elias. You nearly cracked your head open on the pavement in front of a hundred paparazzi. But... the press this morning is insane. They aren’t talking about a love triangle. They’re calling you the ’Tragic Boy Genius of Hollywood’.”

It had worked perfectly. The PR disaster was averted. However, as Elias swung his long legs over the side of the bed, the digital loan shark resting in his cerebral cortex rudely interrupted the tender moment.

[CHA-CHING!][SYSTEM WARNING: DAILY MAINTENANCE FEE DEDUCTION INITIATED.][DEDUCTING -$50.00 USD FROM LIQUID CASH RESERVE.]

Elias’s jaw tightened imperceptibly. His liquid cash balance ticked down to $313,440.00.

It was a vast sum of money for a sixteen-year-old, but Elias knew the math of the impending war. Jimmy Iovine and the Interscope syndicate were not going to stop at radio blockades. They were going to leverage their massive corporate distribution networks to choke Sovereign Media’s supply chains. To build an independent, bulletproof distribution pipeline that bypassed the major labels entirely, Elias needed a massive, instantaneous injection of liquid cash. He needed a minimum of a million dollars in untraceable, physical leverage, and he needed it before the summer ended.

He couldn’t wait for ninety-day royalty checks. He needed an ATM, and the wealthiest ATMs in Los Angeles were the egos of the men who hated him.

”Ladies, your dedication is profoundly appreciated,” Elias stated, his voice instantly dropping the exhausted act and returning to its smooth, commanding resonance. He stood up, adjusting the collar of his hotel-provided silk robe. ”However, I must request that you return to your respective schedules. I have a minor legal audit to attend to with Paul.”

Cindy and Charlize exchanged a look of pure, united exasperation.

”You literally just woke up from a collapse, and you’re already going back to work?” Cindy sighed, shaking her head. ”You are impossible, Elias. But fine. My driver is waiting downstairs.”

Charlize stood up, grabbing her oversized denim jacket. She walked over and poked Elias firmly in the chest. ”If you faint again, I am not catching you. I’ll let you hit the pavement.”

”I have no intention of depreciating my facial symmetry, Charlize,” Elias smirked, a dark, utterly shameless expression.

The moment the heavy suite doors closed behind the two women, Paul Rudd scurried out from the adjoining dressing room. Paul looked like a man who had spent the entire night hyperventilating into a paper bag.

”Elias, you are a sociopath,” Paul hissed, clutching his Sovereign Media clipboard. ”You faked a medical emergency to stop two supermodels from killing each other, and you actually made them feel sorry for you! But we have a bigger problem! The Interscope legal team just sent us a forty-page cease-and-desist regarding our independent radio promotions! Jimmy Iovine is trying to bury us in legal fees!”

”Legal fees require lawyers, Paul. We do not employ lawyers; we employ leverage,” Elias countered smoothly, stripping off the silk robe and pulling on his faded vintage leather jacket. ”We need a massive, immediate injection of physical capital to fund our counter-offensive. We are shifting our operational focus to the fourth pillar of my portfolio.”

Paul blinked, aggressively pushing his glasses up his nose. ”The fourth pillar? Elias, we have music, we have modeling, we have the Tarantino movie. What is the fourth pillar?!”

Elias locked his mesmerizing, predatory eyes onto his assistant. ”We are going to monetize physical trauma, Paul. We are organizing a professional boxing exhibition.”

Paul’s face drained of all color, instantly turning the shade of old oatmeal. ”Boxing?! Elias, you are a fashion model! You have a four-million-dollar face! You cannot get into a ring with a professional fighter! If you get hit, your cheekbones will shatter, and the LVMH executives will sue us for destroying their investment!”

”I have no intention of getting hit, Paul,” Elias murmured, walking toward the door. ”I intend to weaponize the hatred of the Hollywood elite. Rent a warehouse.”

Two days later, the logistical reality of Sovereign Media’s newest venture was in full, chaotic swing.

Elias had refused to book a glamorous venue or a licensed casino. Standard arenas took a massive percentage of the gate revenue and required months of bureaucratic sanctioning. Instead, he forced Paul and Owen to secure a massive, grimy, abandoned manufacturing warehouse in the deep industrial outskirts of Los Angeles.

The interior smelled of ancient motor oil and rust. In the absolute dead center of the cavernous space, a hastily assembled, professional-grade boxing ring had been erected under a battery of harsh, blinding halogen construction lights.

Owen Wilson was casually sweeping the concrete floor, wearing a faded flannel shirt and a relaxed smile. ”I gotta admit, Elias, the aesthetic in here is very raw. It’s got that underground, gladiator vibe. It’s very authentic to the human struggle.”

Paul, however, was currently experiencing a full-scale panic attack near a folding card table that served as their makeshift box office.

”This is illegal, Elias!” Paul shrieked, slamming a stack of heavy, black cardstock envelopes onto the table. ”We are operating an unlicensed, underground fighting arena! If the police show up, they aren’t going to fine us; they are going to throw us in a federal penitentiary! And worse... look at these expenses!”

Paul shoved a ledger toward Elias. ”Renting the warehouse, renting the ring, and paying the non-refundable advance to the opponent you selected just cost us fifteen thousand dollars in cold, hard cash! We are bleeding out for a vanity project!”

Elias didn’t flinch at the expenditure. Deep in his mind, the system logged the brutal deduction.

[DEDUCTING -$15,000.00 USD FOR UNDERGROUND ARENA LOGISTICS AND OPPONENT ADVANCE.]

His liquid cash plummeted to $298,440.00.

Elias picked up one of the black cardstock envelopes. He had spent hours the previous night meticulously drafting the invitations. He hadn’t sent them to boxing fans or legitimate sports promoters. He had sent them exclusively to the men who despised him most.

He had targeted the Silicon Valley tech-bros whose investments he had shorted, the Wall Street Nepo Babies whose egos he had crushed at auctions, and the rival film executives he had ruthlessly extorted.

The copywriting on the invitation was a masterpiece of psychological manipulation. It didn’t invite them to a sporting event. It offered them a deeply personal, visceral catharsis.

”You are charging ten thousand dollars for a single ticket,” Paul whimpered, holding his head in his hands. ”Nobody is going to pay ten grand to stand in a dirty warehouse, Elias! It’s insane!”

”You fundamentally underestimate the purchasing power of a bruised male ego, Paul,” Elias smiled. It was a dark, chilling expression that radiated pure, unadulterated capitalist malice. ”These men have millions of dollars, but they are completely impotent against my intellect. I have humiliated them in boardrooms and restaurants. The opportunity to see my face physically shattered by a professional bruiser is a fantasy they cannot resist. They are not buying a ticket. They are buying revenge.”

Elias turned toward the makeshift locker room constructed from hanging black tarps. ”Prepare the cash lockboxes, Paul. The haters are about to arrive.”

By 10:00 PM that night, the desolate street outside the warehouse was transformed into a parking lot of obscene wealth. Sleek black town cars, aggressively red Ferraris, and heavily armored Mercedes sedans idled on the cracked asphalt.

Inside the warehouse, the atmosphere was thick with cigar smoke, expensive cologne, and a buzzing, toxic energy of absolute, concentrated malice.

Exactly twenty men had accepted the invitation. They stood around the brightly lit boxing ring, their tailored Armani and Zegna suits contrasting violently with the grime of the warehouse floor. They were laughing, exchanging business cards, and pointing up at the empty canvas with expressions of greedy anticipation.

Paul Rudd stood behind the folding table, sweating so profusely his glasses were fogging up. He was currently shoving banded stacks of hundred-dollar bills into a heavy steel lockbox.

”Ten thousand... thank you, sir. Next,” Paul stammered, his hands shaking as a smug hedge-fund manager dropped a brick of cash onto the table.

Twenty tickets. At ten thousand dollars each.

Two hundred thousand dollars in raw, physical, untraceable liquidity had just materialized on the table.

Elias stood in the shadows behind the black tarps of his makeshift dressing room, watching the money flow. He felt a deep, resonant hum of triumph in his chest.

[LOGGING CASH INFLUX: +$200,000.00 USD (UNTAXED VIP REVENUE).]

His liquid cash skyrocketed to an incredibly powerful $498,440.00. The trap had worked flawlessly. The Win-Win Parasite strategy was fully operational: he offered them the illusion of his destruction, and they gladly handed over a fortune for the privilege.

But Elias wasn’t finished. Two hundred thousand was the entry fee. He wanted to drain their bank accounts entirely.

”Ladies and gentlemen,” a booming voice echoed over a rented PA system. Owen Wilson was standing in the center of the ring, holding a microphone, looking entirely too relaxed for a man hosting an illegal fight club. ”Welcome to the vibe. In the red corner, fighting out of a very aggressive gym in North Hollywood... please welcome the professional challenger, ’Iron’ Mike Vance!”

The crowd of billionaires and executives erupted into a vicious, bloodthirsty cheer.

From the opposite side of the warehouse, the opponent emerged.

Mike Vance was a towering, heavily muscled professional journeyman. He possessed a thick, scarred brow, arms like tree trunks, and a reputation for aggressive, brawling knockouts. He marched toward the ring, punching his gloves together, radiating raw, unpolished violence. He climbed through the ropes, glaring out at the crowd, ready to earn his fifteen-thousand-dollar advance by putting a pretty Hollywood boy in a coma.

The executives cheered louder, some of them actively shouting insults directed at Elias’s empty corner.

Behind the tarp, Elias unbuttoned his crisp white dress shirt. He didn’t spend hours in a gym lifting weights. He didn’t have the bloated, steroid-infused mass of a traditional 1990s heavyweight. But he could not step out there looking fragile; he needed to project the aesthetics of a lethal, coiled spring to maximize the betting odds.

He mentally engaged the digital loan shark.

[CHA-CHING!]

The biological shift was instantaneous and visually devastating. The system ruthlessly metabolized every ounce of excess water weight and perfectly aligned his muscular fascia. His abdominal muscles instantly locked into a razor-sharp, mathematically flawless eight-pack. His shoulders broadened, the V-Taper of his back tightening into the sculpted perfection of a Greek marble statue.

He didn’t look like a bodybuilder. He looked like an apex predator stripped of all unnecessary mass, engineered purely for speed and violence.

Elias dropped his shirt. He wore simple, unbranded black trunks and black boxing boots.

He pulled the black tarp aside and stepped out into the harsh halogen light.

The cheering from the crowd of executives abruptly died in their throats. The Wall Street raiders and Nepo Babies blinked, their smug smiles faltering as Elias walked slowly toward the ring. He didn’t jog. He didn’t look nervous. He moved with the terrifying, mechanical precision of an executioner.

Elias didn’t climb into the ring immediately. He walked directly toward the VIP ropes, where a cluster of the most arrogant, outspoken billionaires were standing.

Among them was Richard Sterling Jr., the arrogant real estate heir Elias had publicly humiliated and mathematically decapitated at the Bank of America months ago. Sterling was wearing a custom silk suit, clutching a glass of scotch, his face twisting into a mask of bitter hatred.

”You look good without a shirt, van Kempen,” Sterling sneered loudly, trying to reclaim his dominance in front of his peers. ”But muscles don’t stop concussions. Ten thousand dollars just to see your pretty face destroyed by a real boxer? That is a cheap price, Elias. I would have paid double to see Vance break your jaw.”

The surrounding executives chuckled, emboldened by Sterling’s insult.

Elias stopped exactly two feet away from Sterling. He didn’t show anger. He didn’t puff out his chest. He unleashed a dark, impossibly arrogant, completely shameless smirk that chilled the blood of every man standing near the ropes.

”I agree, sir,” Elias murmured, his baritone voice a smooth, silken blade that carried effortlessly over the ambient noise of the warehouse. ”This is a discount price for anger therapy.”

Elias smoothly reached into the waistband of his boxing trunks. He pulled out a thick, heavy, rubber-banded brick of cash. It was the absolute maximum liquid capital he could safely pull from the lockbox without bankrupting his emergency operational reserves.

Exactly one hundred thousand dollars.

Elias slammed the brick of cash down onto the edge of the boxing ring’s canvas, right in front of Sterling’s face.

The heavy thud of the money echoed in the quiet warehouse.

”Do you also want to wager your Porsche keys in our betting pool?” Elias challenged softly, his dark eyes locking onto the terrified heir, deploying a masterful, sociopathic trap of pure greed. ”I hear my opponent has a terrifying KO record. It is a very safe investment for you.”

Sterling stared at the mountain of cash. His breathing hitched. The surrounding billionaires stared at the money, their eyes widening with uncontrollable, primal greed. The kid was offering them a chance to not only see him beaten, but to personally rob him of a hundred grand. The odds were astronomical. Elias was an unranked model; Vance was a 220-pound professional killer. It was free money.

”You want to bet on yourself?” Sterling laughed, his voice cracking slightly with adrenaline. He pulled out a massive roll of hundreds from his pocket. ”You’re a dead man, Elias. I’ll take fifty grand of that action!”

”I’ll take the other fifty!” a hedge fund manager screamed from the back, waving a checkbook.

”I’ll put twenty grand on Vance in the first round!” another executive roared.

Within thirty seconds, the corner of the warehouse had devolved into a frenzied, chaotic stock market trading floor. The executives were literally throwing cash onto the canvas, desperate to bet against the arrogant teenager.

Elias van Kempen stood amidst the screaming billionaires, his flawless, sculpted torso gleaming under the halogen lights. He didn’t look at the money. He looked up at ’Iron’ Mike Vance, who was glaring down at him from inside the ring.

Deep within his mind, the system recognized the sheer, absolute perfection of the extortion.

Elias casually ducked through the ropes and stepped onto the canvas. The screaming of the billionaires reached a fever pitch. They thought they were about to watch an execution.

They were absolutely right. They just didn’t realize they were the ones on the chopping block.
