Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The Packaging War

Mid-July 1993. The oppressive summer heat was entirely neutralized by the hum of the commercial HVAC system inside Elias van Kempen’s acoustic-glass office at Sovereign Studios.

The heavy, 128-page manuscript of Se7en rested on the center of the modular steel desk. The paper still smelled faintly of cheap diner coffee and Andrew Kevin Walker’s profound existential relief.

David Fincher stood over the desk. The thirty-year-old director had been reading in absolute silence for the past two hours. He hadn’t asked for water. He hadn’t blinked. He was currently gripping the edges of the script so tightly his knuckles were white.

Fincher turned to the final page. He read the last scene.

What’s in the box?

Fincher didn’t just read it; he absorbed the sheer, uncompromising devastation of the ending. For a man whose artistic soul had been brutally sanitized by 20th Century Fox executives, this script was pure, unadulterated heroin.

Fincher slammed his hands down on the desk, looking up at Elias with wild, hyper-obsessive eyes.

”This is it,” Fincher hissed, his voice vibrating with a manic, creative ecstasy. ”This is the most vile, beautiful, depressing thing I have ever read. It’s an autopsy of human apathy. You actually got the guy to sign this over to you?! If New Line got their hands on this, they would have the wife survive and the dog save the day!”

”I purchased the blueprint for ten thousand dollars, David,” Elias murmured smoothly, leaning back in his vintage leather chair, his dark eyes radiating pure, sociopathic calm. ”And I secured it with the promise of your uninhibited cruelty as a director. The script is ours.”

”We need the detectives,” Fincher barked, already pacing the length of the glass office, his mind racing through shot compositions. ”We need Somerset. We need the old, broken cop. I’m thinking Morgan Freeman. I need his gravity. But for Mills... we need the hothead. We need the arrogant kid who thinks he can save the world before it grinds him into dust.”

Paul Rudd, standing near the door with his clipboard, let out a nervous squeak. ”Morgan Freeman?! Elias, we have less than four hundred thousand dollars in the bank! Morgan Freeman won’t even look at a script unless the upfront offer has seven figures!”

”We will not pay an upfront fee, Paul. We will barter with equity,” Elias stated flawlessly. ”However, David is correct. The packaging of this film requires a synergistic collision of established prestige and raw, emerging star power. The fulcrum of the movie is Detective Mills. The market currently demands a specific demographic profile for that role.”

Owen Wilson, lounging on the vintage sofa, tossed a paperclip into the air. ”You’re talking about the ’Pretty Boy’ paradox, right? The industry wants a guy who looks like a golden retriever but acts like a wolf. Someone the magazines love, but who is secretly super depressed about being too handsome.”

”Owen’s philosophical translation is surprisingly accurate,” Elias noted, pulling a casting ledger from his drawer. He scanned the names of the leading men dominating 1993. ”Tom Cruise is too established; he will demand creative control. Keanu Reeves lacks the necessary aggressive volatility. We require an actor who is currently trapped by his own physical aesthetics. An actor desperate to prove he is not merely a commercial commodity.”

Elias tapped his silver pen against a specific name.

”Brad Pitt,” Elias purred, the syllables dripping with lethal, capitalist intent.

Paul dropped his clipboard. The clatter echoed loudly in the office.

”Brad Pitt?!” Paul shrieked, his voice cracking into a hyperventilating whistle. ”Elias, are you insane?! He just did Thelma & Louise and A River Runs Through It! He’s the biggest rising heartthrob in the world! He’s on the cover of Rolling Stone! His agency is going to demand a five-million-dollar quote!”

”His agency,” Elias smiled, a dark, utterly shameless expression, ”is Creative Artists Agency.”

Paul froze. The blood drained entirely from his face, leaving him looking like a ghost in a flannel shirt. ”CAA? You mean... Richard’s agency? The guy you blackmailed over the offshore tax fraud at Musso & Frank? The guy you extorted for five grand in the motel room?!”

”The very same,” Elias confirmed, adjusting the cuffs of his white shirt. ”Richard represents Mr. Pitt. Which means the fortified gates of CAA are currently guarded by a man who is terrified of my shadow. Print the script, Paul. We are going to Century City.”

Deep within his cerebral cortex, the digital loan shark aggressively logged the operational expense.

Elias ignored the phantom pinch in his chest. His liquid cash settled at $399,100.00. He was officially operating under the psychological threshold of four hundred grand, but he refused to let the math dictate his posture.

An hour later, Elias van Kempen strolled into the opulent, terrifyingly silent lobby of the CAA headquarters in Century City.

The building was a monument to 1990s Hollywood power. The marble floors gleamed, and the air smelled of expensive cologne and ruthlessness. Agents in bespoke suits walked the halls, negotiating millions of dollars with a single phone call.

Elias wore his scuffed vintage leather jacket. He didn’t look like he was trying to fit in. He looked like an apex predator who had come to inspect the zoo. Owen trailed behind him, looking deeply relaxed, admiring the modern art on the walls.

They approached the massive, curved reception desk. The receptionist, a sharply dressed woman who wielded more power than most producers, looked up. Her eyes narrowed as she took in Elias’s grunge aesthetic.

”Can I help you?” she asked, her tone dripping with practiced, icy condescension. ”Do you have an appointment? This is a closed floor.”

Elias didn’t bother arguing with the gatekeeper. He simply looked over her shoulder, spotting a familiar, slickly gelled executive storming down the hallway, screaming into a brick-sized cellular phone.

”Richard,” Elias called out, his baritone voice a smooth, low rumble that effortlessly pierced the hushed acoustics of the lobby.

Richard snapped his phone shut, spinning around, furious at the interruption.

When his eyes landed on Elias van Kempen, the senior CAA agent literally stopped breathing. A massive, highly visible sweatdrop materialized on his temple, rolling rapidly down his cheek, completely ruining his expensive, confident facade.

Richard remembered the motel room. He remembered the offshore tax evasion files. He remembered the teenager who had systematically dismantled his entire life in three minutes.

Richard practically sprinted over to the reception desk, his face a panicked, flushed crimson.

”What the hell are you doing here?!” Richard hissed, keeping his voice desperately low so the surrounding agents wouldn’t hear. ”Are you insane?! You can’t just walk into CAA! I paid your extortion fee! We have a ’co-representation’ deal for Charlize! We are square! Get out of my building before I call security!”

Elias did not flinch. He leaned casually against the reception desk, crossing his arms.

”Security?” Elias murmured, unleashing a slow, chilling smile. He executed the Legal Chokehold with flawless, surgical precision. ”By all means, Richard. Call them. I am sure the security detail would be fascinated to hear my detailed recitation of the routing numbers for Apex Holdings in the Cayman Islands. I wonder how long it will take the IRS to send their own security detail once the audit is triggered.”

Richard choked on his own saliva. The threat wasn’t a bluff; it was a loaded gun pressed directly against his career. The kid held the nuclear launch codes to his freedom.

”You...” Richard stammered, his hands shaking so violently he had to shove them into his pockets. He performed a rapid, desperate cost-benefit analysis. Throwing the kid out was professional suicide. Letting him stay was professional humiliation. Survival dictated compliance.

”Fine,” Richard gritted out, his ego entirely crushed. He turned to the bewildered receptionist. ”He’s... he’s a VIP client. Put him in my private waiting lounge.”

Elias offered a polite, devastatingly arrogant nod. ”A flawless logistical decision, Richard.”

Richard practically dragged Elias and Owen down the hallway, shoving them into a plush, private waiting room filled with expensive leather sofas and imported espresso machines.

”Stay here,” Richard ordered, his voice cracking. ”Don’t touch anything. I have a meeting with an actual A-List client in five minutes. I’ll deal with you after.”

Richard slammed the door shut.

Owen collapsed onto a leather sofa, kicking his boots up onto a glass coffee table. ”Wow, man. The energetic resonance in this building is super toxic. That guy’s aura is basically screaming for a vacation.”

Elias didn’t sit down. He stood near the center of the room, holding the freshly printed script of Se7en. He knew exactly who Richard’s ’A-List client’ was. He had checked the trades. He had audited the schedules.

Two minutes later, the door swung open again.

Brad Pitt walked into the room.

In 1993, Pitt was the absolute definition of the Hollywood golden boy. His blonde hair was perfectly messy, his features impossibly handsome, and he radiated a relaxed, effortless charm. But beneath the surface, there was a visible, restless hunger. He was tired of being offered roles as the romantic lead or the shirtless cowboy. He wanted to bleed for a role. He wanted to be taken seriously.

Brad stopped, surprised to see the room occupied. He looked at Owen, who offered a chill peace sign, and then his eyes locked onto Elias.

Brad blinked. He recognized Elias from the Calvin Klein billboards that were currently plastering the city.

”Hey, man,” Brad said, his voice carrying a relaxed, Midwestern drawl. ”You’re the guy from the underwear ads, right? The one with the crazy stare. I didn’t know you were with CAA.”

”I am not with CAA,” Elias replied smoothly, his baritone voice commanding the space. ”I am Sovereign Media.”

Before Brad could ask for clarification, Richard burst into the room, holding a stack of scripts.

”Brad! Sorry I’m late,” Richard gasped, completely ignoring Elias and Owen. He shoved a script with a bright pink cover into Brad’s hands. ”I’ve got it. The perfect vehicle. It’s a romantic comedy set in Tuscany. You play a charming architect who falls in love with a baker. The studio is offering four million dollars upfront. It’s a guaranteed blockbuster, Brad. It will solidify your brand for the next five years.”

Brad looked down at the pink script. A look of profound, agonizing boredom washed over his face. He tossed it onto the glass coffee table with a dull thud.

”Richard, I told you,” Brad sighed, running a hand through his hair. ”I don’t want to play another charming guy. I don’t want to be the pretty boy. I want something gritty. I want to play a guy who gets his hands dirty.”

”Brad, be reasonable,” Richard argued, his agent-instincts flaring. ”Gritty doesn’t pay four million dollars. Gritty doesn’t get you on the cover of People magazine. You have to strike while the iron is hot!”

Elias van Kempen did not wait for an invitation. He stepped forward.

He mentally engaged the digital loan shark, sacrificing his points to guarantee the psychological hijack.

[CHA-CHING!]

Elias unleashed a smile of such pure, devastating, sociopathic charisma that it completely neutralized Richard’s frantic energy.

”Gritty tak pernah membayar empat juta dolar di muka, Brad,” Elias murmured, his voice a dark, silken purr that forced the actor to look at him. (Gritty never pays four million dollars upfront, Brad.) ”Karena studio besar tidak pernah berani membiarkan pahlawan mereka hancur.” (Because major studios never dare to let their heroes break.)

Richard spun around, his face purple with rage and terror. ”Van Kempen! Shut your mouth! I told you to wait!”

Elias didn’t even look at the agent. He kept his dark, mesmerizing eyes locked entirely onto Brad Pitt.

”Your agent is terrified of risk, Brad,” Elias analyzed flawlessly, executing the Win-Win Parasite with ruthless precision. ”He wants to wrap you in bubble wrap and sell you to Middle America for a flat fee. He is protecting his commission, not your legacy.”

Brad frowned, highly intrigued by the teenager who was openly insulting a senior CAA partner in his own office. ”And what are you selling, man?”

”I am selling a nightmare,” Elias stated softly.

He held out the thick, 128-page script of Se7en.

Brad looked at the script, then took it.

”The character is Detective David Mills,” Elias dictated, mapping the psychological bait. ”He is young, arrogant, and desperate to prove he can handle the darkness of the city. He thinks he is the hero of an action movie. But he isn’t. The city breaks him. The killer breaks him. It is the most grueling, emotionally devastating role written this decade.”

”This is garbage!” Richard shrieked, trying to snatch the script from Brad’s hands. ”Brad, don’t listen to him! It’s a low-budget indie! It’s directed by David Fincher! The guy just tanked Alien 3! It’s career suicide!”

Brad effortlessly held the script out of Richard’s reach, his eyes scanning the first few pages. The raw, violent prose of Andrew Kevin Walker instantly gripped him.

”Fincher?” Brad asked, looking up at Elias. ”Fincher has an incredible eye. But the studios control him.”

”Sovereign Media is financing the picture,” Elias corrected, his aura pulsing with absolute authority. ”I have guaranteed David Fincher one hundred percent Final Cut Privilege. No studio executives will sanitize the violence. No focus groups will change the ending.”

Elias stepped closer, dropping his voice into a lethal, irresistible whisper.

”Read the last ten pages, Brad,” Elias commanded. ”Read what happens in the desert with the cardboard box.”

Brad flipped to the end of the script. He read the climax.

His breath hitched. His eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated shock. He looked up at Elias, his expression a mixture of horror and profound, artistic ecstasy.

”They... the studio will never let you shoot this ending,” Brad whispered. ”It’s too bleak.”

”I am the studio, Brad,” Elias smiled shamelessly. ”And I guarantee the box stays.”

”Brad, please!” Richard begged, literally sweating through his suit. ”If you do this movie, you’ll make scale! You’ll be working for pennies!”

”Richard is correct regarding the upfront capital,” Elias admitted, entirely deadpan, turning the financial deficit into a weapon. ”Sovereign Media cannot pay you four million dollars today. We are offering a significantly reduced upfront fee.”

Elias tilted his head, unleashing the ultimate capitalist trap.

”However,” Elias murmured smoothly, ”I do not believe in paying artists a flat fee while the executives hoard the profits. I am offering you something Richard cannot. I am offering you One Percent of the Backend Gross Box Office. You take the artistic risk, you own a piece of the victory.”

Brad Pitt stared at Elias. A teenager in a vintage jacket had just bypassed his agent, humiliated CAA, handed him the darkest script of the decade, and offered him backend gross on an indie film. It was the most insane, brilliant pitch he had ever heard.

Brad looked at the pink romantic comedy script on the table. He looked at the heavy, brutal script of Se7en in his hands.

He grinned. It was a hungry, dangerous smile.

”I’m in,” Brad said, tossing the pink script into the trash can. ”Let’s go build a nightmare.”

Richard let out a tragic, suffocated whimper, collapsing onto the leather sofa. He had just lost his biggest commission of the year to a sixteen-year-old sociopath.

As Elias shook Brad Pitt’s hand, securing the leading man for his franchise, the digital loan shark erupted in a glorious symphony of golden applause.

Elias felt the warm surge of power, his CP balancing at 340. He turned and walked out of the CAA waiting room, Owen trailing behind him.

The director was locked. The script was secured. The leading man was hungry.

Sovereign Media was officially in production.
