Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The Fragrance Mutiny

Early December swept into Los Angeles with a crisp, biting wind that finally scattered the autumnal smog. Inside the massive, elegantly minimalist Sovereign Media headquarters on Sunset Boulevard, Elias van Kempen stood before a pristine, wall-sized whiteboard.

With a squeaking red dry-erase marker, he drew a single, massive number on the board.

-$2,000,000.00

Paul Rudd, who was currently trying to organize a stack of headshots on his modular steel desk, looked up. He flinched visibly.

”Elias,” Paul whined, adjusting his glasses. ”Why are you doing this to us? Why are you writing that on the wall? We have over two million dollars in the bank! We survived the Sony blockade! We have a hit movie! Can we please just focus on the positive cash flow instead of the LVMH fragrance campaign we lost a month ago?”

Elias calmly capped the red marker. He turned around, his vintage leather jacket shifting flawlessly over his broad shoulders. His dark, striking eyes were burning with a cold, unrelenting capitalist hunger.

”Capital is never truly lost, Paul,” Elias murmured, his baritone voice echoing off the acoustic glass partitions. ”It merely accrues late fees while it rests in someone else’s vault. Francois and the LVMH board canceled my contract because they believed my deliberate, carefully curated diner aesthetic was ’vagrant garbage’.”

Elias walked over to his desk and picked up the latest issue of Vogue. He tossed it onto Paul’s desk. The cover featured Elias and Charlize, looking fiercely independent and tragically beautiful in the cheap, greasy San Fernando Valley diner.

”The public did not see vagrants,” Elias smiled, a dark, utterly shameless expression. ”They saw the vanguard of Grunge. The aesthetic they rejected is now the most expensive, highly sought-after cultural commodity on the planet. I refuse to let French snobbery cost me a two-million-dollar dividend. We are going to a holiday party tonight, and we are initiating a mutiny.”

Three hours later, the rusted, asthmatic 1984 Honda Civic pulled up to the curb outside a sprawling, ultra-exclusive estate in Beverly Hills. The LVMH Winter Gala was the pinnacle of the seasonal social calendar, packed to the brim with fashion royalty, European aristocrats, and luxury brand executives.

Elias stepped out of the driver’s seat. He was wearing a sharply tailored, dark charcoal suit, effortlessly blending high-society elegance with a dangerous, untouchable edge.

From the back seat, Cindy Crawford and Milla Jovovich emerged.

Cindy, the undisputed queen of the Runway Mafia, wore a sleek, backless black gown that projected pure, established power. Milla, fifteen and radiating the fierce, rebellious energy of a rising star, wore an oversized vintage blazer over a slip dress. Together, flanking Elias, they looked like the absolute apex of the fashion industry—a devastating combination of classic glamour and cutting-edge grunge.

Then, the passenger door groaned open.

Paul Rudd stumbled out onto the immaculate Beverly Hills pavement. He looked absolutely horrifying.

Elias had personally selected Paul’s wardrobe from a clearance bin at a Goodwill store deep in the Valley. Paul was wearing a heavily stained, oversized flannel shirt, ripped corduroy pants that were three inches too short, and a faded beanie. He smelled faintly of mothballs and despair.

”Elias,” Paul whimpered, tugging at the frayed collar of his flannel. ”I look like I just crawled out of a storm drain. People in passing Bentleys are literally locking their doors when they see me. Why couldn’t I wear my rented tuxedo?!”

”Because, Paul, you are a crucial piece of visual set dressing,” Elias explained smoothly, not a shred of empathy in his voice. ”I require a stark, visceral contrast to highlight our own aesthetic dominance. Furthermore, the total cost of your ensemble was exactly fifteen dollars. I am preserving operational liquidity.”

Deep within his cerebral cortex, the digital loan shark recorded the microscopic, yet deeply insulting, expenditure.

Elias ignored the tiny deduction in his ledger and led his elite strike team toward the towering wrought-iron gates of the estate.

A pair of massive, imposing private security guards stood at the velvet rope, checking invitations on heavy, gold-embossed clipboards.

Elias didn’t wait to be asked. He glided forward, Cindy and Milla perfectly synchronized at his sides. The sheer, overwhelming gravitational pull of Elias’s confidence, combined with the blinding star power of the two supermodels, completely paralyzed the guards.

”Good evening,” Elias murmured politely, stepping right past the velvet rope.

The guards nodded dumbly, completely mesmerized.

But as Paul scurried forward to follow them, one of the guards snapped out of his trance. He threw a massive arm across the entrance, blocking Paul’s path with a look of profound, visceral disgust.

”Whoa, hold it right there, buddy,” the guard barked, eyeing Paul’s stained flannel and ripped corduroys. ”The soup kitchen is three blocks down on Wilshire. Get off the property before I call the LAPD.”

”What?! No!” Paul squeaked, his voice cracking in sheer panic. ”I am an Executive Assistant! I work for Sovereign Media! Elias, tell them!”

Elias paused just inside the gates. He looked back at Paul, who was currently being physically restrained by a man twice his size. Elias offered a slow, incredibly charming, and utterly heartless smile.

”Patience, Paul,” Elias commanded flawlessly. ”Maintain the perimeter. We will return shortly with the ransom.”

Elias turned around, completely abandoning his best friend to the security guards, and walked into the glittering, champagne-soaked wonderland of the LVMH Gala.

”You are an absolutely terrible human being, Elias,” Cindy murmured, a highly entertained smirk playing on her lips as they navigated the crowded ballroom.

”I am a highly efficient delegator, Cindy,” Elias corrected. ”Now, look sharp. I see the target.”

Standing near a towering, crystal ice sculpture of the Eiffel Tower was Francois. He was the Senior Brand Executive for LVMH who had infamously canceled Elias’s two-million-dollar contract over the phone. He was currently sipping a glass of Dom Pérignon, looking incredibly smug as he chatted with a group of Parisian socialites.

Elias didn’t approach immediately. He needed to arm the psychological warhead.

He mentally engaged the loan shark.

[CHA-CHING!]

The skill flooded Elias’s system. The air around him suddenly thickened, dropping the ambient temperature by ten degrees. He didn’t just look like a handsome model anymore; he projected the suffocating, inescapable gravity of a trillion-dollar conglomerate. It was an aura of pure, unadulterated financial supremacy.

Elias moved. The crowd of socialites and executives naturally parted for him, instinctively yielding to the sheer, crushing weight of his presence.

Francois turned around just as Elias stopped three feet away from him.

The LVMH executive’s smug smile vanished instantly. His eyes bugged out of his head. He looked at Elias, then at the impossibly glamorous, fierce supermodels flanking him. Cindy Crawford and Milla Jovovich weren’t just standing there; they were radiating an aura of total allegiance to the teenager in the dark suit.

”Van Kempen,” Francois gasped, nearly spilling his champagne. He tried to puff out his chest, but the Financial Domination Pheromone was already suffocating his ego. ”What are you doing here? You do not have an invitation! Your aesthetic is a liability to this maison!”

Elias didn’t raise his voice. He didn’t look angry. He smiled, a dark, elegantly terrifying expression.

”My aesthetic is currently dictating the global retail market, Francois,” Elias purred, his baritone voice wrapping around the executive’s throat like a silk tie. ”I am on the cover of Vogue. The ’diner vagrant’ look you so foolishly rejected is generating hundreds of millions of dollars in secondary market sales. You are standing in the middle of a cultural revolution, and you are dressed like a relic from 1985.”

Francois swallowed hard. A massive, highly visible sweatdrop materialized on his forehead, rolling down his temple. He knew Elias was right. The LVMH board had been screaming at him all week because they had missed the Grunge wave, and their quarterly projections were suffering.

”You... you are a fad,” Francois stammered, his French accent thickening with panic.

Elias leaned in, unleashing the Rival Bid Bluff with surgical precision.

”Gucci does not think I am a fad, Francois,” Elias whispered, deploying the name of LVMH’s fiercest global competitor. ”I had a very lengthy, very lucrative breakfast meeting with their creative director this morning. They absolutely adore the gritty, street-level authenticity of Sovereign Media. They are preparing a global buyout of my entire roster.”

Francois’s face turned the color of wet chalk. The glass of Dom Pérignon shook violently in his hand. If Gucci secured the face of the Grunge movement—along with Cindy Crawford and Milla Jovovich—LVMH would look like an aging, irrelevant dinosaur in the European market. It would be a corporate massacre.

The snobbish executive completely cracked.

”Wait. Please,” Francois choked out, abandoning every ounce of his Parisian dignity. He looked at Elias with desperate, pleading eyes. ”Tuan van Kempen, kami salah menilai tren. LVMH bersedia mengembalikan tawaran dua juta dolar itu hari ini.” (Mr. van Kempen, we misjudged the trend. LVMH is willing to reinstate the two-million-dollar offer today.)

Elias did not offer a comforting nod. He slowly, deliberately reached out and took a fresh glass of champagne from a passing waiter’s tray. He took a sip, letting the agonizing silence stretch until Francois looked like he was about to pass out.

”Dua juta dolar adalah harga sebulan yang lalu, Francois,” Elias smiled, his voice a lethal, shameless melody of pure capitalist extortion. (Two million dollars was the price a month ago, Francois,) ”saat kau menyebutku gembel.” (when you called me a vagrant.)

Elias stepped closer, forcing Francois to look up at him.

”Hari ini, karena kau harus menyelamatkan merekmu dari keusangan budaya, harganya adalah empat juta dolar dan lima persen ekuitas,” Elias dictated softly, his eyes flashing with absolute, unyielding malice. (Today, because you have to save your brand from cultural obsolescence, the price is four million dollars and five percent equity.) ”Kau tidak sedang merekrut model; kau sedang menyewa sekoci penyelamat.” (You are not hiring a model; you are renting a lifeboat.)

Francois let out a tragic, pathetic whimper. ”Five percent equity?! In LVMH?! Are you insane?! The board will never approve stock options for a teenager!”

”Tanda tangani,” Elias commanded smoothly, turning his head slightly toward the door. (Sign it,) ”atau Gucci akan sangat menyukai konsep diner kumuh kita.” (or Gucci will absolutely love our dilapidated diner concept.)

It was a flawless checkmate. The threat of a rival securing the cultural zeitgeist completely overrode all standard corporate logic.

Francois frantically gestured to his terrified assistant, who rushed forward with a leather portfolio. The executive’s hands shook so badly he could barely grip the gold pen. He crossed out the standard terms on the emergency retainer contract, scribbled in the four million dollars, and hastily wrote in the five percent brand equity option as a ”Strategic Marketing Partnership Bonus.”

Francois ripped the top page off the pad, along with a pre-certified, one-million-dollar corporate advance check, and shoved them both into Elias’s hands.

”Take it,” Francois gasped, practically hyperventilating. ”Just... don’t call Gucci. Please.”

Elias smoothly folded the contract and the million-dollar check, slipping them into the inner breast pocket of his tailored suit.

”Your reputation has been successfully salvaged, Francois,” Elias murmured politely. ”I will expect the remaining three million wired to Sovereign Media within the week.”

Elias didn’t stay for the caviar. He turned on his heel, flanking himself with Cindy and Milla, and walked out of the ballroom.

As the heavy oak doors of the gala closed behind them, Elias van Kempen stood on the quiet, manicured driveway of the Beverly Hills estate. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the crisp, one-million-dollar check.

He had just doubled his original contract, secured highly lucrative stock options, and intellectually humiliated the man who had called him a vagrant.

Deep within his neural pathways, the digital loan shark erupted in a glorious, deafening symphony of golden applause.

Elias felt his CP balance tick up to 135. The daily tax immediately followed.

Elias smiled. He didn’t care about the fifty dollars. He looked at the million-dollar advance in his hand. His liquid cash had just exploded to an entirely new echelon.

”Elias!”

A muffled, desperate voice cried out from the guardhouse.

Elias looked over. Paul Rudd was currently sitting on the curb, surrounded by three massive security guards who were eyeing him like he was armed and dangerous. Paul’s thrift-store flannel was torn, and he looked like he was on the verge of tears.

”Elias, thank God! Tell them I’m with you!” Paul begged. ”They were about to call animal control!”

Elias walked slowly over to the guardhouse. He slipped the million-dollar check back into his pocket and looked down at his best friend.

”Release him,” Elias commanded the guards with a smooth, aristocratic wave of his hand. ”He is my Head of Logistics.”

The guards blinked, thoroughly confused, but they stepped aside.

Paul scrambled to his feet, dusting off his ripped corduroys. He looked at Elias’s triumphant, arrogant smile.

”Did you get it?” Paul whispered. ”Did you get the two million back?”

Elias van Kempen looked up at the stars over Beverly Hills.

”I got four, Paul,” Elias corrected softly. ”Now, get in the car. I believe it is time to build our own jewelry vault.”
