Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The MTV Unplugged Ambush

Late September draped Los Angeles in a dry, lingering heat, but inside the acoustic glass walls of Elias van Kempen’s corner office, the climate was impeccably cool. The Sovereign Manufacturing plant was running at maximum capacity, churning out tens of thousands of physical cassettes and compact discs, ensuring that the ”Creep” single flooded every Tower Records end-cap across the West Coast. The cash flow was monumental.

Yet, Elias was not looking at his bank statements. He was staring at a copy of Rolling Stone magazine resting on his modular steel desk.

Paul Rudd stood nervously by the door, holding a stack of faxes. ”Elias, the regional numbers from Seattle just came in. We sold out three stores in two hours. We are literally printing money. Why do you look like you want to foreclose on a charity?”

”Because, Paul, revenue is not synonymous with legitimacy,” Elias murmured, his baritone voice a smooth, cold rumble. He flipped the magazine open, pushing it toward his assistant. ”Read the review section.”

Paul squinted at the page. ”’The Sovereign Media phenomenon is an artificial retail bubble. Elias van Kempen is a stunningly handsome catalog model who successfully weaponized shopping mall muzak, but industry purists remain skeptical of his actual vocal talent. He is a manufactured studio creation, unproven and untested in the live arena.’”

Paul winced, looking up. ”Okay, so a critic is being a snob. Who cares? The kids are buying the CD.”

”The Old Guard cares,” Elias corrected, leaning back in his stolen director’s chair. ”Tommy Mottola has blacklisted me from traditional radio, and now he is leaning on the print media to classify me as a visual gimmick. A novelty act. If the industry solidifies that narrative, my longevity is capped. I cannot monopolize the touring infrastructure if the public believes I lip-sync.”

Elias stood up, adjusting the cuffs of his crisp white shirt. He walked over to a whiteboard detailing the upcoming broadcast schedules for major television networks.

”I require a platform of absolute, undeniable artistic purity,” Elias stated, his dark eyes locking onto a specific date. ”A stage where backing tracks are forbidden, and the vocal frequency is stripped bare. A stage that Tommy Mottola respects, but currently does not control.”

Paul followed Elias’s gaze. His eyes widened to the size of dinner plates. ”MTV Unplugged? Elias, you’re out of your mind! That’s the most prestigious music show on television! They only invite established legends and massive rock bands! Pearl Jam is shooting their session this week in New York! You can’t just call MTV and ask for a slot!”

”I never ask for a slot, Paul,” Elias smiled, a dark, terrifying expression of pure capitalist ambition. ”I occupy the vacuum. Pack your bags. We are going to New York.”

Forty-eight hours later, the Sovereign Media strike team was walking down the bustling, cable-strewn corridors of Kaufman Astoria Studios in Queens, New York.

Elias wore a heavily faded, oversized flannel shirt over a vintage t-shirt, completely masking his usual razor-sharp tailoring. He looked like an impossibly handsome, brooding roadie.

They navigated the backstage labyrinth with the effortless authority of men who belonged there. Elias’s Photographic Memory had mapped the studio blueprints hours ago. He bypassed the green rooms and the VIP lounges, heading directly for the isolated equipment bays near the loading dock.

He found his target sitting on a heavy flight case, tuning a battered acoustic guitar.

It was a session guitarist hired to provide auxiliary rhythm support for Pearl Jam’s iconic Unplugged set. The man looked exhausted, nursing a cup of lukewarm coffee.

Elias didn’t hesitate. He walked up to the musician, his aura completely unbothered by the sheer illegality of what he was about to do.

”Good evening,” Elias said softly, his voice dropping into a smooth, hypnotic cadence.

The guitarist looked up, frowning at the teenager. ”Hey, man. Set’s closed. You with the lighting crew?”

”I am an independent contractor specializing in sudden career shifts,” Elias stated flawlessly. He reached into the inner pocket of his flannel shirt.

He pulled out a thick, banded stack of crisp hundred-dollar bills. Five thousand dollars. The physical agony of parting with the capital flared in his chest, but he ruthlessly suppressed it. This was an investment in global brand equity.

Elias dropped the brick of cash directly onto the guitarist’s lap.

”You are currently experiencing an acute, catastrophic case of gastrointestinal distress,” Elias dictated, staring deep into the musician’s bewildered eyes. ”It is a tragedy. You must immediately evacuate the premises to seek medical attention. You will leave your acoustic guitar and your backstage pass on this flight case. By the time the producers realize you are missing, the live broadcast will have already commenced.”

The guitarist stared at the money. Five thousand dollars in cash was more than he made in two months of grinding session work. He looked at Elias, then looked around the empty loading dock.

”I... my stomach,” the guitarist suddenly groaned, clutching his abdomen with a commendable, Oscar-worthy wince. He quickly shoved the cash into his jacket pocket, unstrapping his guitar. ”I think it was the craft services sushi. I gotta go, man. Tell the stage manager I’m dying.”

”Your sacrifice will be remembered,” Elias offered a polite nod.

The musician practically sprinted out the loading dock doors.

Deep within Elias’s cerebral cortex, the digital loan shark registered the bribe with a mechanical chime.

Elias barely blinked. He picked up the acoustic guitar, adjusting the strap over his shoulder. He turned to Paul, who was currently hiding behind a stack of amplifiers, sweating profusely.

”Elias, if you get on that stage, they are going to arrest you,” Paul whimpered. ”You are hijacking a national television broadcast!”

”I am not hijacking it, Paul. I am merely providing unprompted sonic enrichment,” Elias smiled, turning toward the heavy velvet curtains that led to the stage. ”Wait by the exit. The moment I unplug, we leave.”

The atmosphere inside the MTV Unplugged studio was electric. The stage was intimately lit with dozens of flickering candles and warm, amber spotlights. The audience was seated mere feet away from the musicians, creating a raw, deeply personal vibe.

Pearl Jam had just finished a blistering, soulful rendition of ”Black.” The crowd was roaring, utterly captivated.

Eddie Vedder, sitting on a stool in the center of the stage, took a sip of water, waiting for the applause to die down. The band was preparing for the next track.

This was the transition. The vacuum.

Elias, sitting on a stool in the deep shadows at the far left edge of the stage, had gone completely unnoticed by the camera crew and the producers in the control room. He was just another grunge-clad musician in the dark.

Until he engaged the system.

He needed to annihilate the room. He needed the world to stop breathing.

[CHA-CHING!]

The biological and optical shift was violent. Elias’s vocal cords flooded with a frequency of pure, devastating emotional resonance. Simultaneously, the physical space around him seemed to warp, dragging the ambient light and the psychological focus of every human being in the room toward his shadowy corner.

Elias didn’t wait for a cue. He didn’t ask for permission.

His long fingers struck the strings of the acoustic guitar.

B. C. Cm.

The haunting, heavily distorted chords of ”Creep”—stripped of all their studio gloss and reduced to raw, bleeding acoustic steel—echoed through the silent studio.

Eddie Vedder stopped drinking his water. He turned his head, staring at the dark corner of the stage, utterly bewildered. The rest of the band froze, looking at each other in confusion. That wasn’t on the setlist.

Elias leaned forward, completely bypassing his auxiliary microphone, relying entirely on the acoustic brilliance of the room and his system-enhanced baritone.

When you were here before...Couldn’t look you in the eye...

The voice that poured out of the shadows was not the voice of a manufactured pop star. It was a deep, gravelly, earth-shattering rumble of absolute suffering. It vibrated in the chests of the audience members. It was the sound of a man who had been chewed up by the world and spat out, singing a hymn to his own isolation.

A girl in the front row actually gasped, her hands flying to her mouth, her eyes widening as the Camera Magnetism skill forced her to look into the shadows.

Up in the glass-walled control room overlooking the stage, absolute chaos erupted.

The Executive Producer, a highly stressed man named Mark, spilled his coffee across the mixing board. He stared through the glass at the teenager hijacking his multi-million-dollar broadcast.

”Cut the cameras!” Mark screamed, pointing wildly at the stage. ”That’s the Sovereign Media punk! That’s the kid Tommy Mottola blacklisted! Who let him on stage?! Tommy is going to kill me! He’s going to pull all of Sony’s advertising!”

”I’m trying, boss, but the A-camera operator isn’t responding!” the technical director yelled frantically, slamming buttons on the switcher.

Down on the stage, the A-camera operator had the heavy lens pointed at Eddie Vedder, but the magnetic pull of Elias’s aura was insurmountable. The operator slowly, involuntarily pivoted the massive rig, panning past the confused rock stars, and zooming directly into the dark corner of the stage.

The harsh, amber light caught Elias’s sharp, exotic face. He wasn’t looking at the audience. He was staring down the barrel of the lens, his eyes dark, empty, and mesmerizing.

But I’m a creep...I’m a weirdo...

The sheer, visceral emotion of the acoustic performance was devastating. The audience was completely paralyzed. There was no whispering. There was no confusion. They were witnessing a moment of unscripted, raw musical genius that transcended the entire broadcast.

In the control room, a production assistant practically threw a headset off her ears, spinning around to face the panicked Executive Producer.

”Boss, the studio lines are blowing up!” she shrieked over the ringing phones. ”The switchboard is completely jammed! Everyone is asking who the handsome guy singing is! The Nielsen live trackers are going insane! Our ratings just spiked four hundred percent in two minutes!”

Mark froze. He looked at the phones. He looked through the glass at the audience, who were currently weeping and staring at Elias in absolute, reverent silence.

He was a television producer. He feared Tommy Mottola, but he worshipped ratings. The kid wasn’t just singing a song; he was creating television history.

A massive, cartoonish sweatdrop rolled down Mark’s forehead. He wiped it away, surrendering entirely to the brutal, undeniable power of capitalism.

”Screw Tommy Mottola,” Mark gasped, grabbing his radio mic. ”Get a close-up on his face! Get a close-up on his face right now! Give him the primary audio feed! Don’t let him stop!”

Three thousand miles away, in a sprawling mansion in the Hamptons, Tommy Mottola was sitting in his private screening room, swirling a glass of Macallan 25. He was casually watching MTV Unplugged, enjoying the fact that he controlled the American music landscape.

Suddenly, the camera panned. The haunting, acoustic chords filled the room.

Tommy Mottola stared at his television screen. He saw the striking, arrogant face of Elias van Kempen, staring back at him in high definition, completely dominating a network that Tommy supposedly owned.

The glass of Macallan shattered in Tommy’s fist. The amber liquid spilled across the Persian rug, mingling with blood, as the CEO of Sony Music realized he had been spectacularly, publicly outflanked.

Back in the studio, Elias hit the final, melancholic chord.

I don’t belong here...

He let the sound ring out, fading into the absolute silence of the room.

He didn’t wait for the applause. He didn’t bow.

Elias calmly unplugged the acoustic guitar, set it down on the stool, and stood up. He walked off the stage, slipping through the heavy velvet curtains and disappearing into the backstage shadows.

Three seconds later, the studio exploded.

The applause wasn’t polite; it was a deafening, thunderous roar of genuine disbelief. Eddie Vedder stood up and started clapping, shaking his head in awe.

By the time the stage managers rushed the wings to find him, Elias and Paul were already walking out the service doors into the cool New York night.

Deep within Elias’s mind, the system erupted in a blinding display of golden fireworks.

Elias smiled, feeling the surge of power. His CP balance rocketed to 70.

The daily toll followed swiftly.

His liquid cash settled at $2,110,046.00.

Paul Rudd was power-walking beside him, looking back over his shoulder every two seconds. ”They are going to sue us, Elias! They are going to sue us for trespassing, for broadcast interference, for—”

”They are going to replay that footage every hour on the hour for the next six months, Paul,” Elias corrected smoothly, stepping into the back of a waiting yellow cab. ”I just secured multi-generational legitimacy for the cost of a sick day. To the airport. The West Coast requires our presence.”
