Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The Studio Landlord Hack

By late April of 1993, the glittering, glamorous illusion of the Hollywood entertainment industry had completely failed to insulate Elias van Kempen from the brutal, unglamorous reality of utility bills.

The LVMH fragrance campaign had wrapped flawlessly. The French executives were ecstatic, Cindy Crawford and Charlize Theron were temporarily pacified, and Elias had successfully secured a contract guaranteeing a four-million-dollar base payout plus brand equity. It was a massive, monumental victory.

However, the agonizing reality of corporate billing cycles dictated a Net-60 disbursement. The four million dollars wouldn’t materialize in his bank account for another two months.

Right now, Elias was standing in the center of Sovereign Studios—a sprawling, historic 1920s Hollywood production lot that he had aggressively acquired. The California sun beat down on the massive, corrugated steel roofs of the vintage soundstages. It was an aesthetic paradise for a studio mogul.

It was also an absolute, apocalyptic nightmare for his liquid cash reserves.

”Elias, I am having palpitations,” Paul Rudd wheezed, sitting on an overturned apple box near the main gates. He was holding a stack of envelopes that looked thick enough to stop a bullet. ”The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power just delivered the monthly invoice. Do you have any idea how much electricity it takes to power a forty-acre historic studio lot? Because I do! It is fifteen thousand dollars! We are hemorrhaging capital just by keeping the security lights on!”

Owen Wilson, sitting on the hood of their battered Honda Civic, took a slow bite of a highly questionable, heavily discounted beef taco they had just purchased from a rusted food truck parked across Sunset Boulevard.

”The energetic flow of this property is very demanding, man,” Owen noted, chewing thoughtfully. ”It’s like a giant, concrete vampire. It just sits there, sucking the financial chi right out of our wallets.”

Elias stood near the gates, leaning casually against the wrought-iron fence. He was wearing his faded vintage leather jacket over a white t-shirt, completely unbothered by the blazing California heat or his executive assistant’s impending cardiac arrest.

He took a bite of his own cheap taco. He had purchased three of them for exactly ten dollars. It was a humiliating lunch for a man who owned the master recordings to a Billboard hit, but his sociopathic frugality refused to authorize a proper restaurant meal until his operational budget was secure.

Deep within his mind, the digital loan shark materialized to collect its daily tax on his existence.

His liquid cash balance clicked down to $176,080.00.

”Relax, Paul,” Elias murmured, his baritone voice a smooth, confident hum as he chewed. ”A studio lot is not a passive liability. It is a highly leveraged asset. We are simply experiencing a temporary, cyclical cash-flow bottleneck. I will secure a tenant to cover our municipal overhead before the day is over.”

”A tenant?!” Paul shrieked, waving the utility bill in the air. ”Elias, this place looks like a haunted warehouse! We haven’t renovated the soundstages yet! The only things living in Soundstage 4 are three stray cats and a family of raccoons! Who is going to rent this?!”

As if summoned by Paul’s hysterical despair, a sleek, immaculately polished black Lincoln Town Car pulled off Sunset Boulevard and glided to a smooth halt right in front of the Sovereign Studios gates.

Two men stepped out of the air-conditioned luxury vehicle. They were dressed in sharp, expensive Armani suits, wearing designer sunglasses, and carrying thick leather portfolios. They exuded the distinct, highly obnoxious aura of Hollywood mid-level executives—men who wielded corporate credit cards and believed they owned the city.

They looked at the rusted Sovereign Studios sign, then looked at Elias, Paul, and Owen eating tacos out of foil wrappers on the curb.

The lead executive, a man with slicked-back hair and a Bluetooth earpiece that screamed 1990s corporate excess, sneered. He walked up to the gate, looking at Elias as if the teenager were a vagrant who had wandered onto the lot.

”Hey, kid,” the executive barked, snapping his fingers impatiently. ”We’re location scouts from Miramax Films. We’re looking for the property manager. Is there an adult we can talk to, or do you squatter kids just hang out here eating garbage all day?”

Paul gasped, deeply offended on behalf of his tacos. Owen just smiled peacefully.

Elias did not flinch. He took another slow, elegant bite of his taco, swallowing before he spoke.

”I am the Managing Partner of Sovereign Media, the sole holding entity of this facility,” Elias replied, his voice dripping with such heavy, aristocratic superiority that the executive momentarily paused. ”And you are currently trespassing on my driveway. State your business, or I will have you towed.”

The Miramax scout let out a loud, highly patronizing laugh, exchanging an amused glance with his partner.

”Right. Sure you are, kid,” the scout chuckled, pulling a contract from his leather portfolio. ”Listen. We’re in a bit of a bind. We need a spillover stage for a B-roll shoot, and we need it today. We’ll take Soundstage 4 off your hands for the week. Five hundred dollars a day. That’s a very generous offer for a run-down warehouse with a raccoon infestation. We are Miramax. We’re bringing prestige to your little junkyard.”

Five hundred dollars a day. It was an insulting, predatory lowball offer. It wouldn’t even cover a fraction of the electricity required to power the massive lighting grids. They were trying to financially exploit a teenager.

Elias didn’t get angry. Anger was an emotion for the poor. Instead, he mentally engaged the digital loan shark. He needed leverage, and he needed it now.

[CHA-CHING!]

The world around Elias instantly shifted. A translucent, radioactive-red grid snapped over his vision, slicing directly through the Miramax scout’s expensive leather portfolio and decrypting the heavily classified production budgets and internal studio memos hidden inside.

Blocks of blinding, neon-red text scrolled rapidly down Elias’s field of vision.

Elias’s eyes darkened into absolute, terrifying voids of pure capitalist joy. The red grid vanished.

The scouts weren’t here to grace him with their prestige. They were cornered rats desperate for a lifeboat, trying to buy their salvation with pocket change.

Elias casually tossed his empty taco wrapper into a nearby trash can. He wiped his hands with a napkin, moving with the slow, lethal grace of an apex predator. He stepped right up to the wrought-iron gate, towering over the Miramax scout.

”Listen, gentlemen. I don’t rent out warehouses,” Elias purred. He didn’t yell; he didn’t need to. His voice was a dark, mesmerizing rumble that completely hijacked the power dynamic of the conversation. ”And you certainly aren’t bringing prestige to my facility. You are bringing a production schedule that is currently bleeding four days behind its principal photography wrap date.”

The scout froze. The arrogant smirk vanished from his face as if it had been slapped off.

Elias leaned closer, his eyes locking onto the man’s terrified pupils. He utilized the ’Lifestyle Deduction’ alibi flawlessly to cover his system’s capabilities.

”You look tired, friend,” Elias whispered smoothly. ”Your suit is wrinkled, which means you’ve been sleeping in your car. Your director is throwing a hysterical fit over wooden acoustics, and your union lighting crew is about to hit double-time penalty rates by midnight. You didn’t come here because this is a junkyard. You came here because my Soundstage 4 is the only room in this city that can save your movie, and if you go back to the office empty-handed, Harvey Weinstein is going to skin you alive and use you as a rug.”

The second scout actually dropped his pen.

The lead scout’s face turned the color of wet cement. A massive, highly comical sweatdrop formed on his forehead, rolling rapidly down his temple. He looked at Elias with sheer, unadulterated horror. How could a sixteen-year-old kid in a leather jacket possibly know the highly classified, deeply embarrassing internal struggles of a major Miramax production?

”H-How...” the scout stammered, his confident Hollywood persona completely disintegrating. ”Do you have someone on our crew? Who is leaking our budget?!”

”Sovereign Media possesses a highly efficient intelligence division,” Elias lied flawlessly, a shameless, utterly beautiful smile curving his lips. ”Now. We are going to restructure your rental agreement.”

”Okay,” the scout gulped, wiping his forehead with a trembling hand. ”Okay. Look, we can go up to a thousand a day. Maybe twelve hundred...”

”Ten thousand dollars per day,” Elias stated, cutting him off with absolute, unforgiving finality.

Paul Rudd let out a loud, squeaking gasp in the background.

The scout’s eyes bulged. ”Ten thousand?! That’s highway robbery! That’s higher than the premium lots at Warner Bros! You’re extorting us!”

”I am not extorting you,” Elias corrected gently, radiating the dangerous charm of a seasoned mob boss. ”I am renting you a soundstage, and I am providing you an umbrella to shield you from the wrath of Harvey Weinstein. Ten thousand dollars a day. A minimum lock of seven days. Paid upfront. In cash, or via a certified corporate check written on the hood of your Lincoln right now.”

”Or what?” the scout challenged weakly, desperately trying to salvage his pride.

Elias tilted his head, his smile turning deadly. ”Or you can get back in your car, drive back to the studio, and tell Harvey that his movie is officially shut down because you wanted to save pennies on location fees. Take your time. I have all day. You have about forty-five minutes.”

It was a flawless, inescapable financial checkmate.

With a tragic, pathetic groan of a man whose career had just been held hostage and violently robbed, the lead scout practically collapsed against the hood of the Lincoln Town Car. He pulled a thick corporate checkbook from his briefcase. His hands were shaking so badly he could barely grip the pen.

”You’re a shark, kid,” the scout hissed miserably, scribbling out the numbers. ”A vicious, cold-blooded shark.”

”I prefer ’Landlord’,” Elias replied smoothly.

The scout tore the check from the book and handed it over the gate. Elias took it, his dark eyes scanning the numbers. It was a certified studio draft for exactly seventy thousand dollars.

Deep within his neural pathways, the digital loan shark let out a thunderous, triumphant roar.

[CHA-CHING!][SYSTEM NOTIFICATION: LANDLORD EXTORTION MISSION EXECUTED WITH MAXIMUM SOCIOPATHY!][EVALUATION: YOU X-RAYED A MAJOR HOLLYWOOD STUDIO’S PRODUCTION HEMORRHAGE AND CHARGED THEM A 2000% MARKUP FOR A RACCOON-INFESTED WAREHOUSE. Elias felt the beautiful, heavy weight of the check in his hand. His operational liquidity was instantly, massively revitalized.

He turned back to his team. Paul Rudd was staring at him, his mouth hanging open in sheer disbelief.

”Paul,” Elias murmured, casually tossing the seventy-thousand-dollar check onto Paul’s clipboard. ”Pay the electric bill. And call the exterminator for Soundstage 4. Miramax moves in tomorrow.”
