But discovering all of this now was like a massive surprise gift package that landed right on his head.

He quickly opened the box to check the condition of the food inside.

He knew that Doomsday had already been going on for two years, and most of the stuff inside was past its expiration date.

But for them, it didn’t matter at all.

It’s not like it’ll kill us sooner, it’s just expired.

He opened the box of braised beef noodles, tore open the packaging, and the familiar smell of instant noodles wafted out.

”Crunch, crunch—” A noise came from behind him.

He saw Xiao Yong tearing open the package of soda crackers, devouring them hungrily.

In two or three bites, he stuffed a small box of soda crackers into his mouth, filling it completely.

But just as Xiao Yong was about to swallow, he got choked.

His eyes bulged out, and with one hand he pounded his chest hard, while the other hand still clutched onto the soda crackers stubbornly.

Seeing this, Xu Chengcai felt both a pang and a sense of amusement, quickly grabbing a bottle of purified water from his right and unscrewing it to pour into Xiao Yong’s mouth.

Gulp—

Under the moisture of the water, the crackers softened bit by bit and were all swallowed down by Xiao Yong.

Even though he was choked to the point of rolling his eyes, Xiao Yong couldn’t bear to spit out the food in his mouth.

These foods were too precious, it would be such a waste to spit them out.

Xu Chengcai handed the water to Xiao Yong, patting his back while saying, half-angry and half-amused, ”Eat slower, no one’s fighting you for it. Eat slower...”

Whew whew—

Xiao Yong took a deep breath, his previously flushed face slowly returning to normal.

He nodded vigorously, looking at the instant noodles on the shelf, and said to his father, ”I want to eat instant noodles.”

As he spoke, he swallowed again.

Xu Chengcai ruffled his head, smiling, ”Alright.”

Then he put down the flashlight, took a cup of instant noodles for him, and reminded, ”Eat slowly.”

He himself didn’t bother to close the door and grabbed a cup of instant noodles to eat directly.

He hadn’t had carbs for a long time, and though the noodles were expired, lacked the chewiness, and were even a bit softened,

they still tasted delightful.

He ate two cups in one breath, then opened a can of fruit cocktail.......

Under the flashlight’s beam.

In this cramped space, the father and son sat on the ground, one in front, one in back, freely indulging in the food here.

They ate without any regard for appearances, stuffing large mouthfuls of food, and carelessly tossed the opened wrappers on the floor.

Amidst the sound of rain outside and the occasional thunder, the two of them ate at an extremely fast pace.

It had been a long, long time since Xu Chengcai had eaten so comfortably.

His body was in an extreme state of thirst and hunger, and at this moment, it felt like a long-awaited rain nourishing his body.

Half an hour later, both their bellies were filled to the brim.

In such circumstances, having been hungry for two years, being able to eat freely all of a sudden is an attraction no one could resist, impossible to stop eating.

There was no thought of what comes next, no thought of whether it would make them too stuffed.....

They just kept eating non-stop, simply wanting to fill up completely.

It was as if being full was a distant memory from another lifetime.

They ate until they could eat no more, then collapsed onto the ground weakly, panting slowly.

It felt as if they had truly come back to life.

Under the flashlight, Xiao Yong and his father exchanged smiles, their laughter gradually getting louder.

”Hahahahaha.”

As they laughed, Xu Chengcai’s eyes began to mist slightly.

Having been preoccupied with eating, he hadn’t felt the weather getting so cold.

Even though it was afternoon, under the heavy rain clouds outside, it was impossible to tell it was daytime.

He suddenly remembered there was still some firewood left outside that hadn’t been brought in.

He struggled to get up, then slowly made his way outside.

Moving the wooden door, he intended to bend down and pick up the firewood.

But he was too full and simply couldn’t bend down.

He could only squat there, as the rain once again drenched his clothes thoroughly.

After two trips, he finally brought all the firewood into the small shop.

He moved the wooden door back and blocked the entrance. Looking around, he saw a dusty small fridge and used it to brace against the wooden door.

He took off his soaked clothes, wrung them out, and spread them across the wooden rack.

Then he looked upwards.

This small shop was built in an antique style, and its roof was also poured with concrete. However, apart from the four corners, the walls and roof were not completely sealed with bricks but left a gap of less than five centimeters.

”This gap is just enough for the smoke from the fire to escape,” Xu Chengcai nodded slightly, mumbling to himself.

He rummaged through his backpack, found a flint, and wiped his hands.

To dry his hands a bit, he tore up some dry cardboard boxes and used the flint to light them.

A small flame ignited, which he cautiously moved to the center of the small room and then added a few larger pieces of cardboard on top.

Crack, crack—

In two or three moves, he dismantled the wooden shelf, piled it up into a triangular stand, and placed it in the flame to burn.

Watching the flames gradually grow larger, he slowly let out a breath of relief.

Approaching the flames, he felt his body gradually warming up.

Rumble, rumble, rumble—

The thunder outside the small house echoed.

Rain pattered against the nearby stainless steel shutter and wooden door.
