Apocalyptic Reincarnation: Start with a 30-million Bonus

Night of February 18th.

The night was dark and starless, and the moon was covered by clouds.

The streetlights at the Big Camphor Tree Base illuminated the corridors.

Standing on the wall, Li Yu looked over the entire base.

The wind picked up, making his clothes rustle loudly.

”The wind is rising,” said Second Uncle, looking at the distant forest. Even in the darkness, the shape of the trees was visible.

”Yes, the wind is rising,” Li Yu murmured.

It seemed like he was responding to Second Uncle, yet also talking to himself.

The grains on the roads, like rice, had been gathered by the afternoon, transported to the food processing plant for drying, and then sealed into airtight underground warehouses.

The underground warehouses are highly sealed; even if entirely submerged, water cannot penetrate them.

Over at the greenhouse area, An Ya processed human waste from the septic tank into composite fertilizer.

In recent days, Li Yu gave some tasks to their cooperative and extra staff to help repair the base and make some things.

They stayed in the base, helping with some tasks, receiving a minimal amount of food, so they hadn’t rushed to leave yet.

However, some people saw the weather warming and planned to go out in a couple of days to perform tasks and exchange for contribution value.

Li Yu considered the upcoming rain and floods very dangerous but couldn’t tell them directly, so he could only give them tasks they could do in the Outer City.

If future development is needed, trustworthy people will undoubtedly be required. At least compared to others outside, these extra and cooperative personnel are much more reliable.

The night wind grew stronger, carrying a faint humidity.

Tonight, Li Yu wasn’t on duty, but he still stayed on the wall.

This evening, he had even gone outside the city, walked around the wall, and checked the situation outside.

After discovering a drainage problem a few days ago, Xu Zhen had been repairing several places within the base these past days.

He specifically leveled some areas, connected the sewers to direct the water, minimizing the risk of internal flooding.

At ten o’clock at night, in the main gate duty room.

Yutong, Li Haoran, Zhou Zhiwei, Li Zhengping, and Li Yu were indoors, while Li Gang patrolled outside the duty room.

The originally fixed personnel on duty had two teams arranged to be on duty simultaneously.

One group stayed around the duty room, the other patrolled up and down the wall.

Aside from the five people at the main gate, the other four duty rooms each had only three people, totaling 17 people.

Additionally, there were six mobile patrol personnel.

Altogether, there were about 23 duty personnel per shift.

This is the lowest level of guard personnel allocation.

The wall defense at the base has four levels.

The Fourth Level alert status is the current setup, which is a fixed alert status.

The Third Level alert status generally activates during severe storms or when a zombie tide breaks out, doubling the personnel to about fifty, and heavy weapons like mortars are brought out.

In the Second Level alert status, during the peak of a zombie tide or strong external threats, combat personnel swell to one to two hundred.

The First Level alert status hasn’t been activated yet. Triggering a first-level alert concerns the life and death of the base, involving all adults to fight the enemy.

.......

Watching the surveillance screen, the wind rocked the branches, and in the dim light, the outside looked somewhat eerie.

”The temperature dropped quite quickly tonight,” Li Haoran said, looking at the screen.

Zhou Zhiwei tightened his clothes and said, ”Isn’t that the truth? When I came over tonight, I even added an extra coat. But speaking of which, this weather has changed a lot. Who would’ve thought it was still minus several tens of degrees not long ago.”

Li Haoran nodded and said, ”It was over twenty degrees during the day, so what’s the temperature now?”

Zhou Zhiwei pursed his lips, shook his head, and said, ”I just checked, and the outdoor temperature is below five degrees. Tonight’s colder than last night, but five degrees matches the month. It’s not even spring.”

Li Haoran complained, ”Don’t blame the month, the weather hasn’t been normal these two years. It’s too abnormal.”

Zhou Zhiwei agreed and chatted a bit, while Li Zhengping listened with his head tilted.

Li Yu, nearby, was trimming his nails with a nail clipper and didn’t join their conversation.

Next to Li Yu, Yutong keenly sensed something different about him tonight.

She gently asked, ”Brother Yu, is something on your mind?”

Her eyes showed a hint of concern. She knew Li Yu carried a heavy burden as the person in charge of the Big Camphor Tree Base, considering many issues.

The future and lives of everyone in the base depended on him.

But Li Yu rarely showed it, often appearing tough and resilient, almost invincible.

Hearing her, Li Yu looked up and smiled, ”It’s nothing, really. How about I take over your shift? You go back and rest.”

Yutong shook her head, saying, ”No, it’s my turn to be on duty. You should go back and rest early, no need to stay with me.”

In her view, Li Yu stayed because he wanted to accompany her, so he remained there so late.
