Back To The 80s: President's Doted Wife

Chapter 1723: Chapter 1724: A Quarrel Triggered by a Box of Snowflake Cream

Liu Wenjing spoke about her argument with her aunt, tears streaming down, and her little son Er Bao, who was over a year old and very sensible, reached out with his small hand to wipe her tears away.

Cheng Su watched this, feeling both sighs and emotions in her heart.

”What happened that made you argue?” Cheng Su pulled a tissue from the coffee table and handed it to her.

Liu Wenjing took it and wiped her tears, giving a bitter smile: ”Because I bought a small box of snow cream.”

Cheng Su was taken aback.

”When Weiqiu got married, my mother-in-law said that our affairs delayed her marriage. So the dowry, whether as compensation or as a gesture from the brother and sister-in-law, should be substantial. But as you know, sister-in-law, only Weixia is earning money in the family, with several mouths to feed, and also needing to rent a house. How can we have so much money?” Liu Wenjing recounted plainly.

Cheng Su nodded, indicating her understanding.

Deng Weixia worked at her restaurant, and she knew very well how much he earned. Especially since he was only considered a trainee, a cutting board worker, with a monthly salary of forty-five bucks, which was already considered high.

When they initially came to seek refuge, they had nothing. Up until now, Deng Weixia had only been working for a year. Even with meticulous calculations and extreme frugality, managing to save up two or three hundred bucks a year was already very thrifty.

”For Weiqiu’s dowry, nearly a hundred was spent on the ring and necklace, and there were other items like boxes and bedding. The bride price and money from her husband’s family were also all given back to her. For this dowry, all the family’s money was poured into it and still wasn’t enough. Weixia even borrowed dozens from colleagues.” Liu Wenjing said.

Cheng Su frowned: ”You even borrowed money?”

Liu Wenjing nodded, wiping her tears once more: ”She said we owed her; it should be thought of like this. She said we delayed her, so it served us right to work like oxen and horses to amass this fortune for Weiqiu.” She sniffed, saying, ”We accept this, since it was our mistake back then. The borrowed money, we’ll repay it slowly. She doesn’t care about her son or grandson, even if the whole family just eats vegetables.”

”But this month, Weiqiu got paid, and anyway, all the money was repaid. He gave me some for household expenses and noticed my poor skin condition, so he told me to buy a facial cream.” Liu Wenjing touched her face, giving a bitter smile: ”Which woman doesn’t like to be beautiful? It’s just a lack of money. With what he said, I passed by the shops back and forth ten times before buying a small box of snow cream.”

As she said this, she took out a box from her pocket.

It was the popular snow cream of that time, the smallest size, only a few bucks.

”It was just for this box of things. When my mother-in-law found out, do you know what she said?” Liu Wenjing laughed self-deprecatingly: ”She said I was hiding private money, said her son worked so hard to earn money while I spent lavishly on useless items. She said I dressed like a vixen, and with such a sinister thing on my face, whom am I trying to attract? She even said with how I was, it wasn’t even worth working the streets; no one would want me.”

She wiped away tears: ”Just because of a box of face cream and a few old clothes, am I seductive? She can spoil and love Weiqiu as much as she likes, and I say nothing. Let us be poor, we’re enduring it together as a family. But she shouldn’t have said this, especially in front of Gou Sheng and Er Bao. When I argued back, she went crazy, grabbing things to throw at me, saying I ruined the Deng family’s reputation and should have been drowned long ago.”

Upon hearing this, Cheng Su’s face turned gloomy.
