Chapter 348: Chapter 347: The Winds of War and the Ink of Truth

---

Seven days had evaporated into a frantic, meticulously orchestrated whirlwind of ink, gold, and the quiet mobilization of armies.

For Alaric Jonathan Kenway, the week had culminated in a brief, highly lucrative return trip to the Fire Capital. True to his absolute word, Kyū Madoka had liquidated the promised sum from his personal royal reserves. The transfer of two billion Ryo had been executed smoothly, the staggering mountains of hard currency vanishing seamlessly into the localized dimensional void of Alaric’s storage tattoo before the capital’s bankers could even fully comprehend the logistics of moving such physical wealth.

While Alaric secured his fortune, the political climate of Konohagakure was being violently and surgically reconstructed by its Fifth Hokage.

Tsunade Senju had not merely shifted the blame for the Uchiha massacre onto the ghost of Danzo Shimura; she had buried him beneath an avalanche of undeniable, publicly accessible truth. Utilizing the Konoha Times and a vast network of civilian news outlets, the Hokage’s office unleashed a relentless media blitzkrieg.

Initially, the sudden, aggressive declassification of high-level intelligence had sparked a volatile wave of rumors. Detractors and cynical nobles whispered that the Slug Princess was simply attempting to mask her own administrative incompetency by scapegoating a dead war hero. But those whispers were categorically crushed the moment Tsunade released the ”Danzo Files.”

Armed with the meticulously preserved scrolls provided by Itachi Uchiha, and guided by the prodigy’s invisible hand in excavating the deepest, most heavily hidden Root facilities buried beneath the village, Tsunade laid bare a legacy of absolute horror.

The public read, with mounting, nauseating clarity, the extensively documented evidence of Danzo’s treason. They read of his explicit, continuous collusion with the traitor Orochimaru, providing the snake with test subjects from the village’s own populace. They read of his dark, historical deals with Hanzo of the Salamander, which had plunged the Rain Village into perpetual civil war. Most damningly, they read the chilling ledgers detailing the systematic kidnapping of innocent civilians and promising shinobi children, all stolen from their beds to be broken and brainwashed into emotionless weapons for the Root foundation.

The village did not riot; they mourned, deeply unified by the shared betrayal of a man who had claimed to protect them from the shadows.

In the aftermath of the subterranean raids, Itachi’s intelligence had also led the ANBU to a handful of surviving, forgotten Root operatives. Among them was a pale, quiet teenager known only by the codename ”Sai.” Stripped of his identity and left entirely alone to navigate a world that demanded emotion, the boy had been gently but firmly integrated into the official Konoha shinobi roster, granted a tentative chance to rediscover his humanity under the sun.

However, internal purification was only half of Tsunade’s burden. The geopolitical fallout had arrived with the swiftness of a falling blade.

Armed with the undeniable proof of Amakura Genbei’s treason, Tsunade had dispatched a series of aggressive, formal letters to the Tsuchikage of Iwagakure. She demanded that the Village Hidden in the Stones own up to their catastrophic mistakes, insisting on massive financial reparations and a formal settlement. The underlying threat was clear: comply, or Konoha would release the intelligence to the global stage, exposing Iwa for violating the most sacred, unspoken law of the hidden villages... interfering directly with the civilian economy of a rival capital.

Unsurprisingly, the stubborn, prideful Sandaime Tsuchikage flatly denied the accusations.

Faced with their refusal, Tsunade executed her threat, releasing the damning evidence to every major power on the continent. Iwagakure, backed into a corner and humiliated on the world stage, loudly denounced Konoha as fabricators and liars.

And with the pride of stones bruised beyond repair, Iwagakure officially waged war.

Yet, despite the coming shadow of a continental conflict, Tsunade was not crippled by the stress. In fact, she was vibrating with an unprecedented, ferocious vigor. Alaric’s hilariously brief, three-sentence mission report... detailing the absolute nullification of the funding reduction, the thirty percent annual budget increase, and the Daimyo’s promise of unconditional financial backing... had transformed Konoha from a recovering military state into an economic juggernaut.

Because of the bottomless war chest suddenly at her disposal, Konoha did not shy away from the declaration of war. They welcomed it.

Konoha - The Main Gates

The afternoon sun baked the towering wooden gates of the village, casting long, lazy shadows over the primary thoroughfare.

Izumo Kamizuki leaned heavily against the reinforced timber of the gatepost, letting out a long, weary sigh as he tilted his head back to watch the slow, drifting crawl of the cirrus clouds overhead.

”You know,” Izumo murmured, his voice laced with a heavy, preemptive exhaustion, ”it really isn’t going to take long before everything turns completely messy again.”

Sitting at the small, sturdy wooden desk a few paces away, Kotetsu Hagane paused his methodical sorting of merchant transit documents. He tapped the stack of papers against the tabletop to align the edges, offering a grim, acknowledging nod before setting them aside.

”Yeah, I know,” Kotetsu agreed, pushing his chair back to stand. He ambled over, slumping against the gatepost right beside his lifelong partner. ”But it’s not exactly a new phenomenon for us anymore, is it? Wars, skirmishes, shifting borders... it has always been the very essence of the Hidden Villages. We’re built for this.”

Izumo hummed a low note of reluctant agreement, crossing his arms loosely over his chest.

”True,” Izumo replied, his brow furrowing as a dark, melancholic shadow crossed his features. ”But that doesn’t mean I have to like it. Every time the drums beat, we end up standing here watching battalions march out, only to welcome them home carrying the bodies of fallen shinobi. It never gets easier to look their families in the eye.”

”I don’t like it either, man,” Kotetsu said, his tone softening with genuine empathy as he clapped a hand onto Izumo’s shoulder. ”But it’s the harsh reality of the life we chose when we put on these headbands. We just have to do our jobs.”

Izumo let out another sigh, kicking a loose pebble across the pavement. ”Well... hopefully, the commanders have enough sense not to send me to the front lines in this next bloodbath. I prefer the relative safety of stamping passports.”

Kotetsu snickered, the heavy atmosphere breaking as a familiar, teasing grin spread across his face. He nudged Izumo sharply in the ribs. ”Are you kidding? You’d be perfect for the front lines, Izumo! They always need premium cannon fodder to tire out the enemy before the real hitters arrive.”

”Shut up, you idiot,” Izumo shot back, driving a sharp, retaliatory elbow directly into Kotetsu’s side, though a bright laugh escaped his lips despite himself.

They chuckled together, the shared, morbid humor acting as a necessary pressure valve against the creeping dread of war.

”In all seriousness, though,” Izumo continued, recovering his breath and shaking his head in profound relief. ”It is incredibly fortunate that Konoha currently has people like Haku and Alaric on the roster. Those two are absolute beasts that eat people alive. I genuinely pity any Iwa-nin foolish enough to cross their path.”

Kotetsu raised a single, highly amused brow, laughing heartily at the colorful imagery. ”Beasts that eat people alive? That’s certainly one way to phrase your praise for them.”

Kotetsu paused, his eyes lighting up as a recent, bizarre piece of village gossip surfaced in his mind. He turned to his partner. ”Speaking of Alaric... have you actually seen his clothes recently?”

Izumo nodded vigorously, leaning in as if sharing a state secret. ”Yeah, I have. He’s been seen wandering through the marketplace multiple times this week actually wearing a standard flak jacket and uniform. It’s deeply unsettling. It’s like watching a bear try to wear a dog collar.”

Kotetsu nodded in fervent agreement, opening his mouth to add his own commentary on the millionaire’s sudden shift in wardrobe, but the words died in his throat.

His peripheral vision caught a shift in the tree line down the main road.

Kotetsu immediately straightened his posture, pushing off the gatepost. Izumo raised a questioning brow, following his partner’s gaze, and mirrored the swift return to professionalism the moment he recognized the towering, white-haired figure approaching the village.

It was Jiraiya of the Sannin.

”Jiraiya-sama,” Izumo and Kotetsu greeted in respectful unison as the legendary Toad Sage reached the checkpoint.

Jiraiya walked toward them, offering a characteristic, boisterous smile. However, beneath the jovial exterior, both gate guards easily detected a distinct, simmering tint of profound annoyance tightening the corners of the Sannin’s eyes. Why the man looked so incredibly irritated, Izumo and Kotetsu would likely never know.

”Good afternoon, boys,” Jiraiya greeted, pulling his travel documents from his robe and handing them over with brisk efficiency.

He waited impatiently as they quickly registered his entry, retrieved his paperwork with a curt nod, and bid his farewells, marching past them into the village with heavy, purposeful strides.

Izumo and Kotetsu exchanged a bewildered glance as the Sannin’s broad back disappeared down the street.

”Do you think he overheard the first part of our conversation?” Izumo whispered, slightly paranoid that they had offended a legend by complaining about the war.

Kotetsu merely shrugged his shoulders, turning back to his desk. ”Who knows? And who cares? It’s not like we should be condemned for having an honest opinion about not wanting to die.”

Hokage Tower - The Office

High above the bustling streets, the atmosphere within the Hokage’s office was a picture of bizarre, highly efficient contradiction.

Three identical shadow clones of Tsunade Senju sat crowded behind the massive mahogany desk. They were furiously stamping forms, signing ledgers, and organizing the mountainous backlog of administrative paperwork, their faces etched with absolute concentration. Hiruzen Sarutobi had finally taken pity on his overwhelmed successor, teaching her the high-level, chakra-intensive trick to managing the village’s bureaucracy without losing her mind.

Meanwhile, the real Tsunade Senju was lounging comfortably on one of the plush leather sofas in the center of the room. She held a steaming mug of premium coffee in one hand, her legs crossed elegantly as she thoroughly read through the finalized, declassified Danzo Files and a newly delivered, heavy parchment letter bearing the Fire Daimyo’s official seal.

Sitting directly opposite her on the adjoining sofa was Alaric.

He mirrored her relaxed posture, his long legs crossed casually at the ankle. A thick, aromatic cigar was held loosely between his fingers, while his other hand balanced a delicate porcelain teacup, freshly brewed and meticulously poured by Shizune just moments prior.

Tsunade lowered the Daimyo’s letter, a wide, deeply satisfied smile breaking across her face as she nodded her head.

”He actually did it,” Tsunade announced, looking across the coffee table at Alaric with a mixture of immense relief and lingering disbelief. She tapped the heavy parchment with a manicured fingernail. ”The Daimyo has officially promised to wire an immediate five billion Ryo specifically designated for war funds. It’s a staggering, almost incomprehensible amount of capital for a single campaign. This is literally Konoha’s first time receiving direct, unmitigated war funds of this magnitude from the Fire Capital.”

Alaric listened quietly, taking a slow, appreciative sip of the jasmine tea before lowering the cup. He brought the cigar to his lips, taking a smooth drag, the cherry glowing bright in the sunlit office.

”Well,” Alaric said, exhaling a thin plume of grey smoke toward the ceiling. ”I told you. The Daimyo actually keeps his word when properly motivated.”

Tsunade snorted softly, taking a sip of her coffee. ”He should,” she replied, her tone firm with the authority of her office. ”He is the absolute ruler of the Fire Country. A sovereign cannot simply hand out false promises to his military arm when the borders are threatened. It undermines his own throne.”

Before Alaric could offer a cynical counterpoint on the historical unreliability of politicians, his sharp blue eyes caught a sudden movement.

He looked toward the large, arched window behind the desk, his brow raising slightly.

Tsunade noticed the shift in his gaze, her own amber eyes narrowing as she turned her head to follow his line of sight.

Standing on the narrow exterior ledge, looking thoroughly annoyed and with his hand raised, preparing to knock on the glass pane, was Jiraiya.

Alaric let out a soft, amused chuckle, leaning back into the cushions.

”Oh, Jiraiya...”
