Chapter 330: Chapter 329: The Five Chains of Ruin

The Fire Capital - The Highest Pagoda

Alaric Jonathan Kenway stood perfectly still upon the sweeping, lacquered tiles of the capital’s tallest decorative pagoda, observing the sprawling tapestry of human ambition below him. The city was a living, breathing behemoth. Unlike the disciplined, hyper-lethal ecosystem of Konohagakure, the Fire Capital was a chaotic engine of commerce and bureaucracy, driven not by chakra, but by coin and influence.

He needed to understand the current moving beneath the surface. To simply storm the royal palace without context would be the act of a brute, not an architect. If he merely mind-controlled the Daimyo without knowing who truly held the purse strings, he might inadvertently trigger a shadow coup.

’Information first,’ Alaric decided, crossing his arms over his olive-green flak jacket. ’I need a complete map of the board before I start moving the pieces.’

His right eye bled into the geometric crimson of his Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan.

Kamui.

Space warped around him, twisting his physical form into a localized dimensional void. He became utterly intangible, a phantom unbound by the physical laws of the world. He was present, yet entirely untouchable.

With a silent pulse of his vast chakra, Alaric formed a single hand seal.

Shadow Clone Jutsu.

Dozens of clones popped into existence around him on the rooftop. Because they were born from him while Kamui was active, they inherited the spatial distortion, manifesting as an army of invisible ghosts.

Alaric didn’t need to speak; the shared network of their consciousness conveyed his orders instantly. The clones scattered like dandelion seeds caught in a gale. They dove off the pagoda, spreading out across the entire expanse of the Fire Capital and beyond.

They phased through the walls of boisterous taverns and high-end inns to eavesdrop on the drunken whispers of merchants. They lingered in the busy, desperate marketplaces to track the exorbitant flow of coins. They bypassed the heavy iron doors of the provincial treasury offices to read the ledgers right over the shoulders of working accountants. A few clones even bounded over the massive city walls, sprinting toward the distant, rural farmlands to inspect the soil and the harvests.

With his intelligence network deployed, Alaric turned his gaze toward the grandest, most heavily guarded structure in the city: The Manor of the Fire Daimyo.

He drifted downward, floating through the crisp autumn air until his boots touched the manicured grounds of the royal estate. The security was tight, but fundamentally archaic. Heavily armored samurai patrolled the perimeter, their hands resting on the hilts of masterfully forged katanas. Servants moved with hushed, hurried steps, their eyes cast downward in deference to the power they served.

Alaric simply walked right through them.

He phased through the thick, reinforced oak doors of the main residence and began his observation. For the first day, he watched the routines of normalcy. He observed the Fire Daimyo, Kyū Madoka... an aging, dignified man with a meticulously trimmed beard... spending hours in his private study, finding solace in the quiet, precise strokes of his calligraphy hobby. He watched the Daimyo’s children, including the designated successor, Ikkyū Madoka... a young man roughly Alaric’s physical age... being drilled by strict, monotonous tutors in the arts of history, diplomacy, and court etiquette.

Everything appeared orderly. It looked like a functional, prosperous court.

But as the hours bled into days, the true picture began to form.

After three solid days of silent, relentless observation, Alaric stood leaning against a polished pillar in the manor’s grand hallway when the feedback hit him.

Poof. Poof. Poof.

Across the city and the surrounding countryside, his shadow clones dispelled, their remaining chakra and accumulated memories rushing back into Alaric’s mind like a tidal wave of data.

He closed his eyes, gritting his teeth slightly as he processed the massive influx of information. When he opened them again, his blue eyes were icy with realization.

He was genuinely surprised. The problem was not merely a stubborn aristocrat refusing to fund his military; the problem was a catastrophic, bleeding rot within the nation itself.

There was a famine.

A severe, widespread agricultural collapse was choking the life out of the Fire Country’s outer provinces. Konoha was completely unaffected... likely because the legendary Hashirama Senju had inadvertently permanently enriched the soil around the hidden village with his latent Wood Release decades ago... but the rest of the nation was starving.

But that wasn’t the most alarming part. The treasury ledgers his clones had inspected painted a contradictory, deeply corrupt picture.

According to the official books, the Daimyo’s government had allocated billions of Ryo for famine relief. There were detailed, meticulously signed budgets for the purchase of imported grain, medical supplies, and transportation. Yet, the clones who had visited the outer walls and the rural farms reported that the granaries were empty, and the minor villages were suffering horrific casualties.

Alaric internalized the hierarchy of the crisis.

Kyū Madoka held absolute authority, but he was an aging ruler who rarely managed the minutiae of the kingdom’s finances personally. For that, he relied heavily on his Chief Minister and primary administrator, the Chancellor Akihiro Takamine.

According to the records, Chancellor Akihiro had signed dozens of massive contracts with various merchant guilds to procure the necessary goods to support the dying provinces and stockpile reserves for the capital.

Alaric mentally mapped out the logistical route. It was a chain composed of exactly five links: The Treasury released the funds. The Merchant Contracts secured the goods. The Transport Caravans moved the supplies. The Provincial Warehouses received the shipments. The Civilians consumed the relief.

’Somewhere along this specific chain,’ Alaric deduced, his eyes narrowing in cold calculation, ’the Ryo is hemorrhaging. The goods are never arriving, the caravans are likely declaring fake bandit raids, and the merchants are pocketing the difference. It’s systemic embezzlement on a staggering scale.’

His focus shifted back to the present. It was morning, and the royal family was gathering for breakfast.

Alaric walked through the walls, entering the opulent private dining room. Kyū Madoka sat at the head of a long, low table, flanked by his primary wife and his heir, Ikkyū. The room was lined with silent samurai and perfectly still servants waiting to attend to their every need.

Yet, despite the extravagant spread of food before them, the atmosphere was suffocatingly grim. Kyū did not converse with his family. He ate slowly, chewing his rice with the mechanical rhythm of a man carrying the weight of the country. The wife and son mirrored his silence, the clinking of their chopsticks the only sound in the vast room.

When the meal concluded, the Daimyo rose heavily from his cushion. He waved away his guards, seeking the quiet solitude of the manor’s sprawling, walled garden.

Alaric followed, a ghost trailing a king.

Kyū walked to a beautiful, ornate gazebo situated in the center of a massive koi pond. The sound of a bamboo fountain provided a rhythmic, melancholy backdrop. A few minutes later, the crisp sound of footsteps approached on the wooden bridge.

It was Chancellor Akihiro Takamine. He was a tall, sharply dressed man with silvering hair and deep bags under his eyes, carrying a stack of scrolls that looked entirely too heavy for him.

”My lord,” Akihiro bowed deeply as he entered the gazebo.

”Akihiro,” Kyū acknowledged, not looking away from the koi swimming in the clear water. ”Tell me of the provinces. Has the latest shipment of grain from the Lightning borders arrived at the western distribution hubs?”

Akihiro’s face tightened. He stepped forward, his shoulders slumping as he set the scrolls on a small table.

”I bear heavy news, my lord,” the Chancellor said, his voice laced with unmistakable grief. ”The famine is still prevailing. The minor villages of the western quadrant are suffering immensely. And... the caravans. Three more supply trains were reported lost to sudden mudslides and rogue mercenary attacks before they could reach the provincial warehouses.”

Kyū Madoka finally turned, his dignified face contorting in pain. ”Lost? Again? We have emptied a third of our strategic reserves to fund these merchant contracts, Akihiro. Billions of Ryo spent, and my people are still eating boiled grass. The prices the merchants are demanding for the next wave of relief are astronomical. We cannot sustain this.”

”I know, my lord,” Akihiro replied, bowing his head, his hands trembling slightly. ”I have tried to renegotiate the tariffs, but the guilds claim the routes are too dangerous. If we cut the funding to the hidden village as planned, we might be able to redirect that capital to hire private escorts for the caravans, but even then... it feels like we are pouring water into a shattered vase.”

Hovering just a few feet away, Alaric watched the exchange intently.

He didn’t rely on mere intuition. He activated the Mind’s Eye of the Kagura, letting his sensory perception delve deep into the emotional states and chakra fluctuations of the two men. His Sharingan spun slowly, searching for the micro-expressions of deceit, the spiked heart rate of a liar, or the cold malice of a corrupt politician.

He found nothing but genuine, crushing despair.

Both men were being entirely honest with each other. They were deeply troubled by the famine and horrified by the inflated prices of the goods the treasury had purchased. They were not the architects of the embezzlement; they were the victims of it. From Alaric’s omniscient point of view, the Daimyo and his Chancellor were completely, tragically blinded by the layers of systemic rot operating beneath them. The merchant guilds and the provincial lords were playing them for absolute fools.

’There’s no use in hiding anymore,’ Alaric concluded, the pieces of the puzzle finally snapping into place. ’I can’t fix a broken supply chain from the shadows if the men at the top don’t even realize the chain is cut.’

He waited patiently.

After a few more minutes of grim, circular discussion regarding budget reallocations, Akihiro bowed deeply and took his leave, carrying his heavy scrolls back toward the administrative wing.

Kyū Madoka was left alone. The ruler of the Fire Country leaned against the wooden railing of the gazebo, burying his face in his hands, completely overwhelmed by the cries of his starving people and the bleeding of his treasury.

Without taking a single step, Alaric willed the Kamui to deactivate.

The spatial distortion faded instantly. His boots touched the wooden floorboards of the gazebo with a soft, definitive thud.

Kyū gasped, his head snapping up as he spun around. His eyes widened in absolute shock at the sudden, impossible materialization of a tall, blonde man wearing a Konoha flak jacket within his highly secured, private garden.

He opened his mouth to shout for his samurai guards, but the sound never left his throat.

Before the Daimyo could even draw a breath, Alaric smiled... a calm, incredibly reassuring expression... and locked his eyes directly onto the ruler’s gaze.

The geometric, crimson pinwheel of the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan flared with an absolute, terrifying brilliance.

’Kotoamatsukami.’

The ultimate, undetectable illusion washed over the Daimyo’s mind like a warm, inescapable tide. It didn’t break his will or turn him into a mindless puppet; it simply and seamlessly planted a new, profound realization deep within his soul, convincing the King that the thoughts were entirely his own.

Kyū Madoka’s panicked expression melted away instantly, replaced by a calm, focused clarity. He looked at the Konoha Jonin standing before him not as an intruder, but as a desperately needed savior.
