Chapter 339: Chapter 338: The Sky Falls

The Forests - Outskirts of Midori no Mura

The dense, ancient woodlands surrounding the western basin were veiled in the deep indigo of early evening. The canopy overhead was thick enough to choke the moonlight, transforming the spaces between the towering pines into a labyrinth of shifting shadows.

Moving through this oppressive gloom with the practiced, heavy-footed caution of seasoned mercenaries were thirty armed men. They were a motley assembly of rogue samurai, missing-nin, and hardened killers who sold their blades to the highest bidder. They had broken their temporary camp a few hours prior, marching steadily toward their target under the cover of the descending night.

At the head of the column marched their leader, a scarred, broad-shouldered brute wielding a massive blade strapped to his back. His mind was currently buzzing, captivated by the bizarre, almost mythic intelligence report they had received from their advance spy just before dusk.

According to the breathless scout, Midori no Mura... the Green Village that they had systematically starved and stripped of its relief goods mere weeks ago... was no longer a dying ghost town. It had been miraculously, impossibly revitalized. The spy couldn’t articulate how the transformation had occurred, only that the sickly, emaciated villagers were suddenly walking the streets with vibrant health, their hollowed eyes replaced by the bright spark of vitality. Even more inexplicably, the vast, cracked expanses of their dead farmlands were now bursting with a seemingly endless harvest, ready to be reaped.

The mercenaries were not particularly alarmed by this revelation; their souls were too calloused for spiritual dread. Instead, a profound, insatiable curiosity had taken root, quickly twisting into the familiar, ugly shape of avarice.

How did this happen? What unnatural force or forgotten god had answered the desperate prayers of a forgotten village? The questions lingered in their minds, but the philosophical implications mattered little to men who traded in blood. Only one fundamental, undeniable truth surfaced in their collective conscience: if they had successfully raided the village when it was destitute, they could effortlessly bleed it dry now that it was overflowing with newfound wealth.

The leader raised a heavy, gauntleted hand, signaling the column to a halt.

”Stop your tracks,” he ordered, his gravelly voice cutting through the ambient hum of the forest. ”Take a breather. Form up.”

The thirty men slowed to a stop, the clatter of their armor and the rustle of their weapons dying down as they gathered around their commander in the dim light. They leaned against tree trunks and rested on the exposed roots, listening intently.

”Listen up,” the leader began, his dark eyes sweeping over his men. ”The plan changes tonight. We don’t just march in and start breaking skulls. We need to find out exactly what is going on in Midori no Mura. A miracle harvest doesn’t just sprout from dead clay without a catalyst.”

He pointed a thick finger toward the valley ahead.

”We need to blend in with the locals. Observe. Keep your blades sheathed and your mouths shut,” he instructed, though a grimace twisted his scarred features. ”I know it will be difficult. It’s a small, insular settlement where everyone knows each other’s bloodlines. We will stick to the shadows of the outer districts. We wait, and we watch.”

Seeing that his men were silently absorbing the tactical shift, a cruel, sadistic smirk crept across the leader’s face, exposing yellowed teeth.

”However,” he continued, his tone dropping into a predatory register, ”if any of you find anything genuinely valuable... be it a hidden vault of Ryo, a mystical artifact, or the secret to this sudden harvest... you take it. Even if it requires breaking a few arms. You have my permission to kill if they resist, but only after we extract the information we need. The secret is the prize. The blood is just a bonus.”

He rested his hands on his hips, his armor clinking softly. ”Are there any questions?”

The forest remained silent for a long moment. The mercenaries exchanged sideways glances, the morality of the order entirely uncontested, though a lingering hesitation hung in the air.

Finally, a man stepped forward from the middle of the pack. It was Kenta, a pragmatic, cautious rogue ninja who usually served as the group’s logical anchor.

”With all due respect, Boss,” Kenta said, his voice measured but tight with concern. ”What we are about to do... it is straying dangerously far from our assigned orders.”

The leader’s dark brows crashed together. He let out a low, guttural grunt, his lips curling into a scowl.

”Our orders were to ransack the provincial warehouses and return the grain,” the leader spat, dismissing the concern with a wave of his hand. ”And we did exactly that. But look at what our employer gave us for it! It was a pittance! We did the heavy lifting, we risked the wrath of the Daimyo’s magistrates, and we barely benefited from the sweat off our own backs.”

”We received our contracted payment,” Kenta argued, standing his ground despite the leader’s rising temper. ”The group received five hundred thousand Ryo for the three raids. That is more than enough to feed and arm us for a year. Breaking the contract to chase a rumor invites unnecessary risk.”

The leader’s face flushed with indignation. He felt deeply offended by his subordinate’s lack of ambition, viewing Kenta’s pragmatism as a direct insult to his command. He glared at the man, exhaling a sharp, frustrated sigh that ruffled his coarse beard.

”Five hundred thousand Ryo?” the leader scoffed, his voice dripping with venomous mockery. ”You think like a peasant, Kenta! Do you have any idea how much the employer earned by selling those relief goods back to the capital? Billions! The difference between what they gave us and what they pocketed is like comparing the dirt beneath our boots to the heavens themselves!”

The leader took a threatening step forward, his hand drifting dangerously close to the hilt of his massive blade.

”Hey, Kenta!” he barked, his temper finally snapping. ”How dare yo—”

The reprimand was violently stolen from his lungs.

”Oho... that’s a remarkably large amount of money...”

The voice did not come from the trees. It did not come from the shadows of the brush. It was a smooth, melodic baritone that seemed to echo directly inside their skulls, dripping with a terrifying, aristocratic sarcasm. They knew instantly, on a primal level, that they were being mocked.

All thirty men whipped their heads around in absolute panic, their hands flying to their hilts. Kunai were drawn and swords were unsheathed. They scanned the gloomy undergrowth, their eyes darting frantically to find the sudden intruder.

”Where are you looking at?”

The voice shifted, seeming to drift lazily around them, an auditory phantom that refused to be pinned down to a single geographic location.

The mercenaries grouped tighter, forming a defensive circle as they tried to pierce the darkness, desperate to lock their eyes onto the source of the mockery.

”I’m right here, though?”

They still couldn’t see him. They searched the bushes, the trunks, the immediate canopy. They searched the shadows of the earth, entirely failing to look toward the zenith.

The leader’s heart hammered against his ribs. His combat instincts, honed over decades of surviving the brutal underworld, screamed at him in a language of absolute terror. This was not a normal ambush. The sheer, suffocating density of the presence hiding in the dark was monstrous.

He opened his mouth, fully intending to scream at his men to scatter, to run for their miserable lives, abandoning the gold and the glory just to survive the night.

But the sky fell before he could utter a single syllable.

BANG!

The impact was cataclysmic. It wasn’t merely the sound of a man landing; it was the roar of an artillery shell striking the earth.

The ground beneath the thirty men violently convulsed. A localized earthquake shattered the forest floor as a figure dropped from the stratosphere directly into the exact geometric center of their defensive formation.

Alaric had deliberately channeled a massive pulse of his dense chakra into the soles of his boots upon impact. The kinetic force, amplified by his will, instantly vaporized the topsoil, carving out a perfectly circular, smoking crater fifteen meters wide. The concussive shockwave blasted outward, uprooting the nearest pines and violently throwing the thirty mercenaries off their feet, scattering them like broken toys across the forest floor.

”GAAAAAH!”

”My legs!”

The bandits screamed in sheer, unadulterated shock, clutching bruised ribs and ringing ears as they scrambled backward through the dirt, desperate to put distance between themselves and the epicenter of the blast.

As the dense cloud of pulverized earth and pulverized moss slowly began to settle, the silhouette of a man emerged from the center of the crater.

Alaric Jonathan Kenway simply stood there, perfectly upright, completely unbothered by the apocalyptic entrance he had just orchestrated. As the dust cleared, the moonlight filtered through the shattered canopy, illuminating his attire.

He was dressed in a dark blue, long-sleeved shirt, the fabric neatly folded up to his muscular forearms. Over it, he wore the iconic, unmistakable olive-green flak jacket of a Konohagakure elite. Dark blue pants were tucked sharply into polished black combat boots.

One of the mercenaries, gasping for air on his hands and knees, stared at the uniform. His eyes bulged in absolute terror, his trembling finger pointing weakly at the towering blonde giant.

”W-Wait... those clothes...?” the bandit stammered, his voice cracking with a paralyzing, existential dread. ”Is he... is he a Jonin from Konoha?!”

The statement swept through the scattered group like a plague. Shock and profound nervousness seized their hearts. A Konoha Jonin was a walking natural disaster to standard mercenaries. They were elite military assets capable of slaughtering entire companies of ordinary men without breaking a sweat.

However, the leader, bleeding from a cut on his forehead, forced himself to his feet. He gritted his teeth, fighting down the primal urge to flee, and looked wildly at his twenty-nine men, who were already looking for avenues of escape.

”Hold your ground!” the leader roared, his voice laced with desperate bravado. ”He could just be a Chunin wearing a stolen vest! Look around you! We are thirty men! We have numbers! Even a seasoned Jonin would bleed to death against thirty blades!”

It was a mathematical fallacy born of sheer panic, but the raw authority in his voice managed to momentarily tether his men to the clearing. They slowly drew their weapons, their hands shaking as they formed a wide, hesitant perimeter around the crater.

Standing in the center of the ruined earth, Alaric slowly raised his head. A dark, terrifyingly amused smirk stretched across his face. He didn’t draw a weapon. He didn’t shift into a combat stance. He simply looked at the leader, his blue eyes gleaming with the predatory calm of a lion observing a flock of bleating sheep.

”I’ll make this very simple,” Alaric said, his voice entirely conversational, devoid of any physical exertion. ”Who is the employer giving you the money to ransack the villages under the Fire Capital’s rule?”

The leader gritted his teeth, his grip tightening on his massive blade. He looked at the single, unarmed man surrounded by his army, and the desperate bravado mutated into a sadistic, wide grin.

”What makes you think,” the leader spat, leveling his heavy sword toward Alaric’s chest, ”that we’ll tell you a damn thing!?”

Alaric raised a single, perfectly sculpted platinum brow.

He allowed the moment to pass. He let the silence hang in the air, giving the thirty men exactly three seconds to appreciate the profound, terminal nature of their mistake.

Then, Alaric chuckled. It was a low, rich sound that vibrated with absolute, divine authority.

Slowly, the tranquil cerulean blue of his eyes bled away. The irises shifted, spinning violently into the sharp, geometric crimson pinwheels of the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan. The sheer, suffocating density of his chakra flooded the clearing, dropping the ambient temperature to a freezing chill.

He didn’t move his feet. He simply raised his right hand, pointing two fingers upward toward the shattered canopy.

”Vulcan...”
