Chapter 322: Chapter 321: The Setup

Konoha - Naruto’s Apartment

Pulled from the depths of sleep by the cheerful, persistent tweeting of birds perched on his windowsill, Naruto Uzumaki blinked against the pale, filtered light of morning.

He layed there for a moment, staring at the familiar, slightly water-stained ceiling of the apartment he had inhabited since childhood. The grueling tension of the Sunagakure mission, the terror of facing the Akatsuki, and the sheer exhaustion of travel had finally melted from his bones.

Today was a new day, and for the first time in what felt like weeks, he woke with a profound, unburdened excitement simply to be alive. Gaara was safe. He was home. Today was a day for productivity.

With a wide, jaw-cracking yawn, Naruto kicked the tangled bedsheets off his legs and sat up, scratching his messy blonde hair.

He shuffled groggily through the small, cluttered living space, his bare feet padding softly against the cold wooden floorboards. Pushing the bathroom door open, he grabbed his toothbrush, smeared a generous dollop of paste onto the bristles, and began scrubbing vigorously. He leaned over the sink, bringing his face close to the slightly fogged mirror, pausing his brushing to narrow his bright blue eyes and strike a confident pose.

He scrutinized his reflection... the sharper jawline he had developed over the past three years, the iconic whisker marks, the unruly hair.

’Still looking undeniably handsome,’ Naruto concluded internally, grinning around a mouthful of foam before rinsing and spitting.

He turned toward the small shower stall, fully intending to wash the lingering sleep from his system, but a sudden, biting draft swept through the cracked bathroom window. Naruto shivered violently, his arms instinctively crossing over his chest to trap his body heat.

He shook his head, instantly abandoning the idea of a morning wash. The air was bizarrely frigid, carrying a sharp, frosty bite that sank right into his joints.

Stepping back into the main room, Naruto padded over to his small refrigerator. The door hinges squeaked a familiar protest as he pulled it open, only to be greeted by a tragically bare interior. Sitting on the wire shelf was a single, unopened carton of milk and a half-empty box of generic cereal.

He stared at the bleak options, a deep, resonant rumble echoing from his stomach in protest.

”Yeah... no,” Naruto murmured, closing the fridge with a definitive click. ”I really don’t want to eat cold cereal today. I survived an S-rank mission. I deserve something good.”

He walked over to his desk, grabbing his toad-shaped wallet, Gama-chan. It was pleasantly heavy, practically bursting at the seams with the substantial payout he had received from Tsunade the day before.

With his breakfast plans upgraded, Naruto moved to his wardrobe. He pulled on his signature orange pants and bypassed his usual jacket in favor of a thick, comfortable black sweater to ward off the chill. He sat on the edge of his bed, slipping his feet into his worn shinobi sandals. As he strapped them on, he noticed the frayed fabric and the thinning soles, heavily degraded from the harsh deserts of Wind Country.

’I should probably buy new sandals today,’ Naruto thought, tapping his toe against the floor. ’And maybe a couple of new clothes... and do some actual grocery shopping so I’m not staring at milk every morning.’

He stepped out of his apartment, locking the door behind him. The moment he hit the exterior walkway, another shiver rattled his spine. He rubbed his arms, looking up at the clear, deceptively sunny sky.

’It’s nearing summer... why is it so damn cold today?’ he wondered. ’Bah... let’s just get on with it...’

Minutes passed as Naruto descended from his apartment complex and blended into the busy arteries of the village.

The central marketplace of Konoha was already alive with the symphony of commerce. Merchants shouted their daily specials, the scent of steaming pork buns drifted from food stalls, and the colorful awnings fluttered in the crisp breeze.

Naruto navigated the crowd with practiced ease, his eyes scanning the storefronts until he spotted the familiar crossed-kunai sign of a premier shinobi apparel and weapons shop.

The bell above the door chimed cheerfully as he entered. The interior smelled sharply of machine oil, tanned leather, and cold steel.

The storekeeper, a middle-aged man with a neatly trimmed beard and a tape measure draped around his neck, looked up from polishing a display case. He didn’t flinch, sneer, or cast the usual, guarded shadow of prejudice that had haunted Naruto’s childhood. He knew the boy was the Jinchūriki of the Nine-Tails, but to him, the blonde youth who had returned from a major operation was just another paying customer in need of gear.

”Welcome,” the storekeeper greeted professionally, setting his cloth aside. ”Find something you’re looking to buy, or do you need a recommendation?”

”Ah, hey,” Naruto walked up to the wooden counter, unsealing his weapon pouches from his hip. ”I need a pair of black standard sandals, and a couple of new kunai. I also want to drop off my current kunai and shuriken for maintenance. It’s been years since I took care of them.”

The storekeeper nodded, pulling out a ledger. ”Of course. Standard issue or reinforced? And what size are your feet?”

”Reinforced, please. And my feet are size nine inches,” Naruto answered, pulling a thick wad of Ryo from Gama-chan and placing the bills directly onto the counter, paying the premium upfront.

The storekeeper expertly counted the cash, sliding the bills into the register before turning to the back wall. He returned a moment later, placing a crisp, new pair of black shinobi sandals and a wrapped bundle of freshly forged kunai onto the counter.

”Here are your new items,” the man said, gathering Naruto’s battered weapons into a metal tray. ”As for the maintenance, reshaping the edges and re-wrapping the hilts will take a little time. You’ll have to wait here, or you can just come back for them after an hour or two.”

”I’ll come back,” Naruto nodded, gratefully swapping out his worn sandals for the new pair, testing the firm grip on the floorboards. ”Thanks, old man!”

Stepping back out into the lively market street, Naruto’s stomach let out a second, far more demanding growl that sounded alarmingly like a dying toad.

He looked around, trying to decide between a barbecue stand and Ichiraku Ramen, when a familiar figure stepped into his peripheral vision.

”Good morning, Naruto-kun.”

Naruto turned, his face splitting into a wide, genuine smile. Approaching him was Haku, dressed immaculately, looking completely serene and untouched by the chaotic energy of the market.

”Hey, Haku! How are you?” Naruto greeted enthusiastically, waving a hand. His stomach grumbled again, completely betraying him. He laughed sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck. ”Say, since we’re both here, you wanna grab some breakfast? Let’s go to a restaurant! My treat! I’m loaded today.”

Haku stopped a few paces away, a polite, entirely unreadable smile curving his lips. He tilted his head slightly, the bells on his hair ribbons chiming softly.

”That is a very generous offer, Naruto-kun,” Haku replied, his voice maintaining its usual, gentle cadence. ”However... asking to pay for my meal in a public restaurant sounds dangerously close to asking me out on a date. Which, considering our dynamic, is a bit weird.” Haku’s smile gained a teasing edge. ”You should probably reserve that kind of forwardness for Hinata-san instead.”

Naruto blinked, his brain grinding to a spectacular halt.

He stood there, utterly clueless, his head tilting to the side like a confused puppy. ”Huh? Date? What do you mean? And why would I do that with Hinata? We’re just friends going to eat!”

Haku simply shook his head, offering a quiet, internal sigh of pity for the Hyuga heiress. The boy’s density was truly a kekkei genkai of its own.

”Never mind,” Haku dismissed smoothly, pivoting the conversation. ”You shouldn’t waste your money at a restaurant anyway. You should just come over to the compound to eat with my Sensei and me.”

Haku raised an elegant hand, pointing a slender finger down the crowded street.

Naruto trailed his eyes along the invisible line, looking over the heads of the milling villagers. It wasn’t hard to spot the target. Standing at a butcher’s stall, towering over the merchant and every other customer in a fifty-foot radius, was Alaric Jonathan Kenway. The blonde giant was casually inspecting a massive slab of beef, looking completely out of place in his high-end attire yet radiating an aura that practically parted the crowd around him.

Naruto’s brows shot up toward his hairline. He instinctively took a half-step back, shaking his hands in front of him.

”Ah, no way, man,” Naruto replied, shaking his head rapidly. ”I wouldn’t want to intrude on you guys. You’re probably busy, and your Sensei is... well, he’s kinda intimidating.”

Haku didn’t accept the refusal. He stepped cleanly into Naruto’s personal space, moving with a fluid grace that offered no threat but commanded absolute attention. With the back of his hand, Haku gently but firmly tapped Naruto’s abdomen... right over the epicenter of the Eight Trigrams Seal.

It was a subtle, grounding motion. A physical reminder designed to make Naruto stop overthinking and just accept the flow of the moment.

”We insist,” Haku said softly, turning away and motioning with two fingers for the Jinchūriki to follow.

Faced with Haku’s quiet persistence and the lingering warmth of the tap against his seal, Naruto found himself unable to argue. He sighed, his shoulders slumping in defeat, and fell into step behind the ice-user.

For the next ten minutes, Naruto was dragged into a whirlwind of culinary errands. He trailed behind Haku as the older boy moved methodically from stall to stall, expertly selecting fresh vegetables, aromatic spices, and a small sack of premium rice.

Finally, they arrived at the butcher’s stall, converging with Alaric just as the massive man finished his transaction.

Alaric turned, a large paper-wrapped parcel of beef tucked casually under his arm. He looked down at Haku, raising a platinum-blonde brow. ”Did you purchase everything on the list?”

Haku nodded his head respectfully. ”Yes, Sensei. I have it all secured in my storage tattoo.”

”Perfect,” Alaric nodded in satisfaction before shifting his piercing blue gaze down to the teenager standing awkwardly behind his student. A wide, charismatic grin spread across his face. ”Naruto. Good to see you upright and not flattened by a pink-haired gorilla. Care to join us for breakfast at my house?”

Faced with the direct invitation from a man who had casually rewritten the cage holding the ultimate demon, Naruto swallowed hard. He offered a stiff, incredibly awkward nod. ”Uh... y-yeah. Sure. Thanks, Alaric-san... or sensei...”

”...Heh,” Alaric chuckled before nodding his head and started walking.

Naruto felt a profound sense of awkwardness settling into his bones. The only time he had truly interacted with Alaric prior to the Suna mission was three long years ago, on a quiet afternoon when the imposing man had casually disassembled and repaired one of the most complex Fuinjutsu known to mankind on Naruto’s stomach.

With the groceries secured, the three of them turned away from the commercial center, beginning the long walk toward the influential, heavily warded districts where the major and minor clans of Konoha resided.

As they walked, navigating the quieter, tree-lined streets, Haku glanced sideways at the blonde Genin.

”So,” Haku prompted, his tone conversational. ”How did you fare during your three-year absence from the village? Was Master Jiraiya’s tutelage effective?”

Naruto shoved his hands deep into the pockets of his black sweater, smiling sheepishly as he kicked a stray pebble down the cobblestone road.

”Honestly? I thought the Ero-Sennin was just going to read his pervy books and use me as an excuse to travel to hot springs,” Naruto admitted, a fond, nostalgic warmth coloring his voice. ”But he was surprisingly a really great teacher. He didn’t just teach me flashy moves.”

Naruto looked up, his blue eyes shining with genuine pride. ”He made me focus on the basics. My chakra control is way better now. He refined my taijutsu so I don’t leave as many openings, taught me how to fight against people who use unique styles, and drilled battle tactics into my head until my brain hurt. He even taught me how to survive in the wild without starving.”

Haku nodded his head in deep understanding, recognizing the hallmarks of a true master preparing a student for the harsh realities of the shinobi world. ”A solid foundation is the difference between life and death. The things you learned must have been incredibly enlightening.”

”Yeah, they were,” Naruto agreed, his grin widening. ”It was hard work, but... it was definitely worth it. I learned a lot... of who I am, what I could be... stuff like that!”

A few paces ahead, leading the convoy like a shepherd guiding his flock, Alaric listened quietly to their exchange.

He held the heavy paper bags of beef in his hands, deliberately choosing not to shunt them into his dimensional storage ring. He liked the mundane feeling of carrying groceries; it grounded him, connecting him to the simple, human aspects of life that his overwhelming power often threatened to erase.

In truth, this entire morning encounter was a meticulously orchestrated setup.

Haku was entirely in on the plan. The ice-user, who generally preferred solitude and quiet mornings, would never have aggressively invited a loud, energetic teenager to breakfast out of nowhere unless instructed. And Naruto, bless his pure, gullible heart, had walked right into the trap the moment food was mentioned.

Lure Naruto to the Kenway Compound with the promise of a premium breakfast. Bring him into the dining room. Have him sit down... and let him unexpectedly come face-to-face with the parents he thought he would never meet.

’With how things are progressing,’ Alaric thought, an amused smirk playing on his lips as he listened to Naruto eagerly explain his new frog-kumite stances to Haku, ’the Uzumaki-Namikaze family is definitely going to end up living in my house.’

He mentally reviewed his real estate history. Ever since he had started accumulating unimaginable wealth, he had built massive, sprawling fortresses... first the Kenway Estate in Bristol, then the Kenway Keep in Pennmere, and now the vast, reconstructed Uchiha District in Konoha. Yet, despite the sheer square footage of his properties, he had never once lived in a house where he was entirely alone.

There was always an assassin, a family member, a runaway demon, or a resurrected Hokage taking up residence in his guest wings.

’Well, I don’t really mind it,’ Alaric concluded, shifting the bags in his arms as the towering, impenetrable gates of his compound finally came into view. ’Lots of people in a house bring energy. They bring noise and life. What is the actual point of building a massive palace if there are no people living in it to enjoy the architecture?’

He stepped up to the gates, allowing the security matrix to read his chakra signature. The heavy timber doors groaned, swinging open automatically to welcome them into the sanctuary.

Alaric stepped inside, his blue eyes gleaming with the anticipation of a director watching the curtain rise on his favorite scene.

’Okay,’ Alaric thought, adjusting his grip on the beef. ’Initial process of the Uzumaki-Namikaze Meetup: complete.’
