Chapter 336: Chapter 335: The Blood of the Phoenix and the Tears of the Green

Midori no Mura (Green Village) - The Village Chief’s Residence

The heavy, unvarnished timber door creaked open with a slow, agonizing groan that seemed to perfectly echo the profound suffering contained within its walls.

Standing in the threshold was a woman whose face was a tragic map of chronic exhaustion. The skin beneath her dull brown eyes was bruised with deep, dark bags, speaking volumes of sleepless nights spent wrestling with the slow, inevitable creep of death. As the door swung wider, the oppressive atmosphere of the interior spilled out into the afternoon air. The sprawling ground floor of what should have been a comfortable, rural home had been entirely repurposed into a desperate, makeshift triage center.

Rows of thin, threadbare futons and hastily gathered straw mats lined the floorboards. Men, women, and children layed upon them, their breathing shallow and ragged, their skin pale with the dual curses of severe malnutrition and opportunistic disease. There were no white-coated nurses, no glowing green palms of medical shinobi... only a handful of equally exhausted villagers moving between the sick with damp cloths and empty bowls.

The woman blinked, her initial wariness faltering against the subtle, comforting hum of the Genjutsu Alaric had woven around his towering presence. She looked up, her gaze trailing from his polished black combat boots, up the dark trousers and standard-issue Konoha flak jacket, to rest finally on his striking, platinum-blonde features.

”Yes?” the woman asked, her voice raspy and fragile, yet laced with a desperate sliver of hope as she took in the metal plate strapped to his arm. ”Are you... a shinobi, mister?”

Alaric offered a gentle, deeply reassuring nod, his posture relaxed to offset his intimidating height. ”I am a Jonin from Konohagakure,” he replied smoothly, projecting a warmth he typically reserved only for Kassandra and his son. ”I was dispatched directly by the Daimyo of the Fire Country to investigate the nature of this famine and to provide whatever assistance this village requires.”

The woman stared at him for a long, unbroken moment, as if terrified that blinking might cause the savior standing on her porch to vanish like a mirage. Slowly, a profound relief washed over her features, and she gave a deep, tremulous nod.

”How... how may I help you, Lord Shinobi?” she asked, stepping aside to clear the entryway.

”I need to speak with the village head,” Alaric stated softly, stepping across the threshold and into the heavy air of the clinic. ”No need to call me Lord though...”

She nodded again, gesturing for him to follow. As she led him through the maze of the sick, Alaric’s expanded sensory network painted a grim, detailed picture of the tragedy unfolding around him. He could feel the dangerously slow heartbeats, the hollowed-out chakra coils, the systemic organ failure brought on by prolonged starvation. It was a miserable, slow execution.

They ascended a narrow, creaking wooden staircase, passing through a short, dimly lit hallway until they reached a closed door at the far end. The woman slid the shōji screen open with practiced care, revealing a moderately sized, unadorned bedroom.

Inside, another exhausted woman knelt beside a low futon, diligently pressing a damp, lukewarm cloth to the forehead of a man in his late fifties. The man’s complexion was a ghastly, ashen gray, his cheeks sunken and his breath whistling thinly through dry, cracked lips.

The woman who had guided Alaric turned to him, her eyes shining with unshed tears. ”This is Taro Nakamura... our village head. As you can see, the famine and the lack of basic medical supplies have taken a terrible toll on him. He gave his own rations to the children until his body simply gave out.”

Alaric looked down at the dying man, a deep, resonant disappointment settling heavily in his chest. His mind briefly flashed back to the pristine streets of Philadelphia, the overflowing granaries of the Kenway farms, and the rigid, efficient logistics of William Penn’s administration. In Pennmere, a crisis of this magnitude would never have been allowed to breach the city limits, let alone reduce a community leader to a starving husk. Yet here, in the heartland of the continent’s most powerful nation, humanity was rotting on the vine.

”I am a medical shinobi,” Alaric lied smoothly, stepping further into the room as the man on the bed weakly fluttered his eyes, struggling vainly to focus on the towering silhouette. Alaric turned his attention to the woman kneeling by the futon. ”Please, give me a glass of water.”

The kneeling woman froze, looking up at Alaric with a sudden, painful flush of deep embarrassment coloring her pale cheeks. She wrung her hands together, her gaze dropping to the tatami mat.

”I... I am so deeply sorry, Lord Shinobi,” she stammered awkwardly, the shame in her voice palpable. ”We are but a poor village, and with the crisis... even the village head does not possess the luxury of a glass cup. Glass is terribly expensive, and all our valuables were bartered away for food months ago. I apologize for our inadequacy.”

Alaric shook his head immediately, the absolute lack of judgment in his blue eyes cutting through her shame.

”Do not apologize to me for being poor,” Alaric instructed, his voice firm but entirely devoid of malice. ”It’s not as though you owe me your lives or your wealth. I just need a vessel. Any kind of cup will do, so long as it can hold liquid.”

Relief flooded the woman’s face. She nodded quickly, reaching toward the small, wooden bedside table and retrieving a simple, roughly carved wooden cup that held perhaps an inch of stale water. She offered it to him with trembling hands. ”Will this suffice?”

”It’s perfect,” Alaric said, taking the cup. He looked at both women, his expression shifting into a mask of quiet authority. ”I need you both to close your eyes. Just for three seconds. Do not open them until I tell you.”

The women exchanged a brief, bewildered glance, but the authority of a Leaf Jonin paired with their own desperate need for a miracle ensured their compliance. They bowed their heads and squeezed their eyes shut.

The moment their vision was obscured, Alaric went to work.

He didn’t bother weaving medical signs or drawing glowing green chakra to his palms. Instead, he hovered his right index finger directly over the shallow pool of water in the cup. With microscopic, surgical precision, he channeled a minuscule fraction of his Wood Release into the vessel itself.

A tiny, razor-sharp splinter of wood detached from the inner rim of the cup, elongated like a microscopic needle, and sliced cleanly across the pad of his hovering finger.

A single, heavy drop of blood welled up from the cut. It wasn’t the dark crimson of a normal human; it shimmered with a faint, incandescent golden undertone... the absolute, unadulterated vitality of the Phoenix Sage. The drop fell, striking the water with a soft plink.

Instantly, the microscopic cut on Alaric’s finger vanished, his cells knitting together perfectly before the splinter even retracted back into the cup’s smooth surface. He gently swirled the cup, the water taking on a very faint, rosy hue as the primordial life force diluted into the liquid.

”Open them,” Alaric commanded.

Exactly three seconds had passed. The women opened their eyes, blinking away the darkness, only to see the blonde shinobi calmly stirring the small wooden cup. They were deeply confused by the strange, theatrical delay, but they remained respectfully silent as Alaric knelt beside the futon.

He slipped a strong, supportive hand beneath Taro Nakamura’s neck, lifting the frail man’s head just enough to part his cracked lips, and tipped the cup, ensuring the dying chief swallowed every last drop of the diluted blood.

Thankfully, the man’s swallowing reflex was still marginally active.

Not even five seconds later, the fundamental laws of biology were aggressively rewritten.

The ghastly, ashen pallor of Taro’s skin vanished, replaced by a rapid, healthy flush of warm blood. His shallow, rattling breaths deepened, expanding his sunken chest with smooth, unhindered rhythm. The hollowed contours of his face seemed to physically plump as the Phoenix blood aggressively purged the systemic failure from his organs, flooding his exhausted chakra coils with pure, rejuvenating energy.

Taro’s eyes snapped open.

He had been hovering on the murky edge of consciousness for days, paralyzed by lethargy. Now, his brown eyes were wide, clear, and vibrating with an electric vitality he hadn’t felt since his youth.

With a sudden, sharp gasp, Taro bolted upright, throwing the thin blanket off his chest. He looked at his own hands, flexing his fingers with terrifying ease, before staring up at the towering, blonde stranger in absolute, paralyzing shock.

The two women gasped in unison, their hands flying up to cover their mouths as they muffled their own shrieks of disbelief.

”I... I’m okay,” Taro whispered, his voice strong and resonant, entirely stripped of its former frailty. He patted his chest, then looked frantically between the weeping women and the calm shinobi. ”I’m really okay... by the Gods, what just happened? I feel like I could run to the capital and back!”

Alaric had absolutely no intention of explaining the esoteric biology of a trans-dimensional immortal, nor did he wish to spark rumors that his veins ran with the elixir of life.

Instead, he casually rolled up his left sleeve, tapped the storage seal inked into his forearm, and retrieved a premium cigar. He snapped his fingers, a tiny spark of fire igniting the tip, and took a long, savory drag, allowing the rich smoke to mask the sheer impossibility of what he had just done.

”It’s a highly classified, secret remedy I developed a while ago,” Alaric lied effortlessly, exhaling the smoke toward the ceiling.

Taro scrambled to his knees on the futon, ignoring the lingering shock to bow so deeply his forehead nearly touched the tatami mat. ”Lord Shinobi... I... I do not know how to adequately thank you! My name is Taro Nakamura, the head of Midori no Mura. Please, tell me your name! We have nothing of material value to offer you in return for this miracle, but I swear—”

”Save the gratitude for later, Taro-san. I’m busy,” Alaric interrupted smoothly, waving his cigar dismissively to cut off the oath of servitude. ”I told you, I didn’t come here to collect debts from starving people. My name is Alaric Jonathan Kenway. I was dispatched directly by the Daimyo to administer aid and actively investigate the logistical failures of this famine.”

Taro raised his head, his eyes widening with profound respect as he digested the name and the royal mandate.

”I intend to use my secret remedy to cure the entirety of Green Village,” Alaric continued, getting straight to the heart of the matter. ”But before I do, I need answers. The Daimyo explicitly released billions of Ryo from the royal treasury to purchase emergency grain and medical supplies for the western provinces. Why is your provincial warehouse sitting completely empty?”

At the mention of the relief goods, the atmosphere in the bedroom violently fractured.

The profound gratitude in Taro’s eyes vanished, eclipsed instantly by a dark, toxic surge of absolute fury. He gritted his teeth, his newly restored muscles bunching as his hands balled into tight, white-knuckled fists on his lap. Even the two women behind him stiffened, their expressions hardening into silent masks of bitter, helpless rage.

”Because, Kenway-sama...” Taro spat, his voice trembling with a wrath that had been festering for months. ”...the relief goods did arrive.”

Alaric paused, the cigar hovering near his lips. His perfectly groomed eyebrows crept upward in genuine surprise. ”Oh?”

”They arrived two weeks ago,” Taro explained, his chest heaving. ”A massive caravan funded by the royal treasury pulled into the village. But the merchants driving the wagons were in an inexplicable, frantic hurry. They unceremoniously dumped the crates into the warehouse, refused to stay for a meal or a rest, and whipped their horses into a frenzy to abandon the village before the sun even began to set.”

Taro’s knuckles cracked as he squeezed his fists tighter. ”Not even an hour after the caravan disappeared over the ridge... the bandits struck. A massive, heavily armed raiding party swept down from the hills. They didn’t burn our homes. They didn’t bother shaking down the civilians. They marched straight to the warehouse, slaughtered the four men guarding it, loaded every single crate of grain and medicine onto their own carts, and vanished into the night.”

Alaric stared at the village chief for a moment, absorbing the sequence of events.

Then, a low, dark chuckle rumbled in Alaric’s chest. It wasn’t a laugh of amusement, but a sound of profound, cynical recognition.

”Well,” Alaric murmured, taking a slow drag from his cigar. ”It’s not exactly a complex conspiracy, is it? It’s the oldest trick in the book.”

Taro didn’t widen his eyes in surprise; the harsh reality of the world had already led him to the exact same conclusion.

”The merchant guilds accept the lucrative royal contracts and take the Daimyo’s billions,” Alaric summarized smoothly, mapping out the corruption with the ease of a master strategist. ”They purchase the goods, deliver them to fulfill their contractual obligation on paper, and then immediately signal a mercenary bandit crew they’ve kept on a hidden payroll. The bandits raid the village, steal the supplies back, and return them to the merchants... who then proceed to sell the exact same grain back to the government at a premium markup for the next wave of relief.”

”They are monsters!” Taro suddenly shouted, the veneer of his composure shattering as hot, furious tears spilled over his weathered cheeks. ”My people are dying left and right! We are not soldiers, Kenway-sama! We are innocent civilians! We are farmers, weavers, and children who just want to live our quiet, everyday lives!”

Taro slammed his fist onto his thigh, his voice breaking with the agony of a leader forced to watch his flock perish. ”I know we are just a small, insignificant speck on the Daimyo’s map. I know we are easily disposable to the capital. But Green Village is filled with humans! Why... why are those damned merchants so blindingly greedy that they cannot spare a single thought for an innocent life!?”

Alaric stood silently, listening to the raw, unfiltered grief pouring from the village head.

Internally, Alaric didn’t quite agree with the impassioned rhetoric of ’innocence.’ In his long, violent, and highly lucrative existence across two different worlds, he had learned that absolute innocence was a fairy tale told to children. Given the right desperation, the right hunger, or the right amount of coin, anyone was capable of monstrous acts. No one was truly innocent when the chips were down.

However, he kept his cynical philosophy firmly locked behind his teeth. He wasn’t here to debate the moral complexities of human nature with a weeping old man. He was here to fix a broken ledger and pull a nation back from the brink of collapse.

”I will handle it,” Alaric said, his voice a low, commanding resonance that instantly severed Taro’s rant. The absolute, unyielding certainty in his tone left no room for doubt.

”For now,” Alaric continued, crushing the ember of his cigar against his thumb before sealing the stub away. ”We address the immediate bleeding. I will cure the people in this house and the rest of your village. After that, I will restore your farmlands. Then... I will go after the bastards responsible for this, and I assure you, they will not be enjoying their profits.”

Deciding to limit the bureaucratic pleasantries, Alaric shifted into a purely operational gear. He turned his piercing gaze to the two women, who were still staring at him with tear-streaked faces.

”I need you to procure at least ten gallons of clean water,” Alaric instructed them sharply. ”Gather whatever buckets, barrels, or basins you have. That will be enough to dilute the remedy for the three hundred people living in this settlement.”

He then looked down at Taro, who was hastily wiping his face with his sleeve. ”Taro-san. Get on your feet. Go outside and instruct whatever able-bodied men you have left to gather every single living soul in this village at the central square to receive treatment. Carry the ones who cannot walk.”

Taro nodded furiously, scrambling to his feet. He opened his mouth, desperately wanting to offer another profound prayer of thanks, but he caught the sharp, no-nonsense look in Alaric’s eye and swallowed the words. Instead, he turned to the two women, his voice ringing with the authority of a chief who had just reclaimed his mandate.

”You heard the Lord Shinobi! Move! Every second counts!”

Taro practically threw the shōji screen open, rushing out of the room with the frantic, purposeful energy of a man reborn, the women scrambling closely behind him to fetch the water.

Left alone in the quiet bedroom, Alaric let out a soft, appreciative hum. A small, genuine smile touched his lips.

’At the very least,’ Alaric thought, walking slowly toward the window to look out over the desolate village that was about to experience a resurrection, ’the village head of Green Village is a capable, proactive leader despite his limitations as a normal human. I can work with that.’
