Chapter 331: Chapter 330: The Weight of Stones and the Will of Fate

Previously

The ultimate, undetectable illusion washed over the Daimyo’s mind like a warm, inescapable tide. It didn’t break his will or turn him into a mindless puppet; it simply and seamlessly planted a new, profound realization deep within his soul, convincing the King that the thoughts were entirely his own.

Kyū Madoka’s panicked expression melted away instantly, replaced by a calm, focused clarity. He looked at the Konoha Jonin standing before him not as an intruder, but as a desperately needed savior.

Kyū Madoka’s Memories - Forty Years Ago

The air within the royal study was stifling, thick with the scent of aged parchment, premium ink, and the crushing, inescapable gravity of expectation.

A young Kyū Madoka, barely standing on the threshold of his teenage years, knelt dutifully upon a silken cushion. He was adorned in layers of immaculate, stifling silk, his posture rigidly straight as he listened to the low, commanding timbre of his father’s voice. Kakyū Madoka, the reigning Fire Daimyo, was a man carved from absolute authority, and currently, he was pacing before a wall adorned with complex calligraphy and strategic maps, lecturing on the intricate, often ruthless economics of ruling a nation.

Kyū nodded at the appropriate intervals, maintaining the outward facade of a dutiful heir, but his mind had long since slipped through the open shōji screens. The distant, vibrant hum of the capital... the clatter of merchant carts, the faint cries of street vendors, the chaotic rhythm of actual life... called to him with an allure that endless lectures on taxation could never rival. He was mentally mapping out the alleyways he wanted to explore, opting for something vastly more interesting than the dry arithmetic of grain yields.

The lecture abruptly ceased.

The silence that followed was far more terrifying than the scolding. Kyū blinked, his focus snapping back to the room just in time to see his father standing directly before him.

Kakyū held a slender, polished bamboo stick, utilizing it as a pointer for the wall maps, but the knuckles wrapped around the wood were beginning to whiten. His grip seemed to tighten audibly, the bamboo groaning under the pressure.

”Oh?” Kakyū stated, his voice a dangerous, deceptive whisper that made the hairs on the back of Kyū’s neck stand up. He raised a singular, judgmental brow. ”Your mind is wandering somewhere else entirely while I am imparting the very foundations of your future kingdom? It seems I have been entirely too lenient on you, Kyū.”

”A-Ah! Father!” Kyū gasped, his eyes widening in sheer panic as he violently re-anchored himself to the present reality. He bowed forward instantly, pressing his forehead against the tatami mat. ”I am so sorry! I lost my focus for a mere moment, I swear I will never do it again!”

Kakyū stared down at his son’s prostrate form, the heavy silence stretching until it felt like a physical weight upon the boy’s shoulders. Finally, the Daimyo let out a long, weary sigh, shaking his head in a simultaneous gesture of disappointment and parental resignation. He turned his gaze toward the open window, looking out over the sprawling expanse of the city he ruled.

”I will let you go for now,” Kakyū declared, turning back to his desk and setting the bamboo stick down with a sharp clack. ”I have a scheduled meeting with the Minister of Agriculture that demands my immediate attention.”

Kyū’s heart leaped with relief, but before he could rise, his father’s voice cracked like a whip.

”However! Before the sun sets, I expect you to bring me twenty full parchments of acceptable, flawless strokes from your calligraphy practice. If the ink is rushed, you will rewrite them until morning.”

”Yes, Father!” Kyū gulped loudly, accepting the punishment without a shred of hesitation.

He immediately rose from his cushioned seat, bowed a perfect ninety degrees, and bolted out of the sliding doors with an ungraceful haste that would have certainly earned him another reprimand had his father been watching.

An hour later, the suffocating confines of the royal residence were nothing but a memory. ℴ

Kyū had expertly navigated the labyrinth of servant corridors, entirely ditching his heavy, ostentatious silk robes in favor of a plain, rough-spun cotton tunic and simple trousers he had ”borrowed” from the laundry quarters. He slipped a modest, unassuming woven hat over his head to obscure his features and tucked a small, leather coin purse into his sash... bringing only a handful of Ryo, just enough to purchase cheap street food without drawing the attention of thieves.

He was the Daimyo’s son, the heir to the wealthiest nation on the continent, destined to command armies of samurais and balance treasuries. He was supposed to be holed up in the library, practicing the elegant curve of his kanji. But honestly, he thrived in the dirt and the noise of the streets. He loved being outside the gilded cage. He loved the unpretentious honesty of the common people, the way they bargained loudly, laughed freely, and lived fiercely.

For the next hour, Kyū simply existed as a ghost among the populace. He roamed the busy marketplace, buying a steaming skewer of grilled dango, listening to the gossip of passing merchants, and offering his youthful strength to help an elderly woman carry a heavy sack of daikon radishes across a crowded intersection.

He was reveling in the simple, grounding joy of being present in the moment when his peaceful excursion was abruptly shattered.

As he turned down a narrower, shadowed alleyway situated between two large tea houses, his eyes widened in alarm.

Standing a few paces ahead was a girl his age, her dark hair tied back with a frayed ribbon, her posture radiating an aggressive, untamed fury. She was standing over three young boys who were trembling violently, and from the initial optics of the scene, it looked entirely like a brutal shakedown.

Kyū’s innate sense of justice flared. He clenched his fists, determined to step in and stop the bullying, but as he crept closer, utilizing a stack of empty crates for cover, the reality of the situation rapidly unspooled.

”So?!” the girl demanded, her voice sharp and ringing with absolute authority. She took a step forward, raising a tightly clenched fist in a vicious feint that made the three boys flinch simultaneously. ”Are you still going to hit my little cousin!? Huh? Are you!?”

Kyū blinked, peering around the crate.

The three boys weren’t being mugged. They were being punished. Each of them was holding a massive, jagged cobblestone aloft with both hands, their scrawny arms shaking under the grueling weight of the makeshift penance she had forced upon them.

”No!” one of the kids cried out, tears of genuine exhaustion and terror streaming down his dirty cheeks. He hitched the heavy stone higher, grimacing in pain. ”I’m sorry! We’re sorry! We’ll never do it again!”

”Yeah, we’ll never come back to this street either!” the second kid wailed, his knees buckling slightly.

”I agree! Just let us put the rocks down!” the last kid nodded his head frantically, his face red with exertion.

The girl held her intimidating stance for a long, agonizing moment, letting them truly feel the weight of their actions. Finally, her fierce glare softened by a microscopic fraction. She let out a heavy, exasperated sigh, dropping her fists to her hips.

”Fine,” she grumbled, stepping back to open the path. ”You can go. But if I catch you picking on kids smaller than you again, I’ll make you hold boulders twice this size.”

”Really, nee-chan!?” the first kid immediately dropped the heavy stone. It hit the dirt with a loud thud. A massive, relieved grin broke across his face. ”Thanks!”

One by one, the other two dropped their stones, gasping for breath as they shook out their cramped muscles. They didn’t linger to offer further apologies; they immediately scrambled past her, bolting toward the safety of the main street.

But as soon as they were a safe distance away, courage, born entirely of cowardice, returned to the ringleader.

The boy stopped, spun around, and aggressively pulled down his lower eyelid with one finger while sticking his tongue out in a mocking akanbe.

”Hahahahaha! Screw you!” the kid shouted, his voice echoing down the alley. ”I’m going to tell my big brother about this! You’re dead meat! Bye-bye, ugly nee-san!”

The girl went completely rigid. A prominent, throbbing vein instantly materialized on her forehead, her hands balling into fists so tight her knuckles popped.

”Y-You little—!” she gritted her teeth, taking a threatening step forward. ”Come back here and say that to my face!”

However, the kids were already gone, disappearing into the chaotic current of the marketplace crowd. She stopped, realizing a chase was futile. Her tense shoulders slumped, and she let out a long, weary sigh, shaking her head as she rubbed the bridge of her nose. ”Those stupid kids... completely ungrateful.”

Observing the entire exchange from the shadows, Kyū found himself entirely captivated.

’Who is she?’ Kyū thought, his heart beating a slightly faster rhythm against his ribs. ’I’ve never seen anyone like her before...’

The noblewomen he interacted with at the court were quiet, demure, and suffocated by etiquette. They hid their faces behind painted fans and spoke in rehearsed whispers. This girl was a tempest. She was fierce, unapologetic, and possessed a wild, raw vitality that completely hijacked his attention.

As she turned around to head down the opposite end of the alley, her gaze swept across the stack of crates.

Their eyes met.

Kyū gasped, his eyes going wide as a deer caught in the path of a drawn arrow. He instinctively tried to press his back flat against the wall and hide behind the wood, but he was a sheltered noble, not like those trained shinobi who could melt into the shadows with a localized jutsu. His attempt at stealth was clumsy and profoundly obvious.

”And who’re you!?” the girl barked, her fierce glare instantly locking onto his poor hiding spot. She marched toward him, crossing her arms defensively. ”Are you stalking me?”

Kyū’s brain completely short-circuited. Confronted by her intense, unyielding stare, every lesson on diplomacy and articulation he had ever learned evaporated into the ether. He stood frozen in place, a flush of deep embarrassment climbing up his neck.

”Uh... hi?” Kyū managed to squeak out, offering a weak, hopelessly awkward wave.

The girl continued to glare at him, her dark eyes narrowing as she looked him up and down. She took in his simple cotton clothes, his foolishly woven hat, and his utterly non-threatening posture. Realizing he was likely just a lingering passerby who had gotten caught eavesdropping, the aggressive fire in her eyes died down into sheer disdain.

She let out a sharp, derisive scoff, turned on her heel with a dismissive flip of her hair, and walked away without another word.

’Did she just...’ Kyū thought, standing utterly dumbfounded as he stared at the empty space she had occupied. He reached up, touching his chest where his heart was hammering a frantic beat. ’...scoff at me?’

Throughout his entire, privileged existence, no one had ever dared to scoff at him... well, except for his father during a particularly brutal lesson on statecraft. To the rest of the world, he was a prince requiring absolute deference. To her, he was just a weird boy in an alley.

And from that precise, humiliating moment onward, Kyū Madoka was hopelessly, irrevocably fascinated.

Days seamlessly turned into a full week.

Kyū’s routine adapted to his new, unspoken obsession. Every afternoon, the moment his father dismissed him from his grueling political and calligraphic lessons, Kyū stripped off his finery, donned his civilian disguise, and vanished into the marketplace.

He still maintained his grounding habits... he still helped the elderly carry their groceries, he still bought treats from struggling vendors... but his primary objective had shifted. He roamed the winding streets and crowded squares with one singular purpose: to catch a glimpse of the fierce girl from the alley.

He observed her from afar, watching the way she haggled ruthlessly with fruit vendors, the way she laughed with her friends, and the protective, aggressive stance she took whenever she walked through the rougher districts. With each passing day, his infatuation deepened, and he genuinely believed his skills at trailing her without being spotted were vastly improving.

He was, of course, entirely wrong.

The afternoon sun was casting long, golden shadows when Kyū spotted her turning down a quiet, residential side street. Eager to see where she was heading, he abandoned his cover behind a textile stall and rushed forward, his sandals padding lightly against the cobblestones.

He reached the corner, plastered himself against the brick wall, and took a deep breath. Peeking his head around the edge to track her trajectory, he anticipated seeing her walking far ahead.

Instead, the very first thing he saw was a closed fist rapidly expanding in his vision.

BAM.

”Ugh!” Kyū yelped, the unexpected, heavy punch catching him squarely on the bridge of his nose.

He stumbled backward, his woven hat flying off his head as he clutched his face with both hands, his eyes watering instantly from the stinging pain.

Standing right around the corner, her stance wide and her fists raised like a seasoned brawler, was the girl.

”You really think you’re slick at stalking, don’t you, weirdo?” she demanded, her voice laced with a mixture of amusement and deep irritation. She stepped toward him, jabbing an accusing finger at his chest. ”I’ve noticed you creeping behind me for a solid week now! What is your problem?!”

”I-I’m not stalking you!” Kyū protested meekly, his voice nasal as he pinched his throbbing nose to ensure it wasn’t bleeding. He took a defensive step back, trying to salvage whatever shreds of dignity he had left. ”I’m just... roaming around! The capital is a big place! I just happen to see you quite often because we clearly frequent the same areas! Honestly... it must be fate.”

It was a line he had read in one of the romantic plays his mother enjoyed. He thought it sounded suave.

The girl stared at him in utter disbelief before her expression darkened into a feral scowl.

”Fate, huh?” she repeated, stepping directly into his personal space as she pulled her arm back, winding up for a second strike. ”Well, I guess it’s fate that you’re going to die by my hands today!”

”Wait, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean—!” Kyū widened his eyes, throwing his hands up to shield his face, fully preparing to absorb another brutal hit.

But the punch never landed.

”Oi, oi...”

A new, heavily antagonistic voice broke through the quiet street, dripping with aggressive malice.

Both Kyū and the girl froze, turning their heads simultaneously toward the entrance of the alleyway.

Blocking their only exit was a group of five older teenagers, all possessing the rough, scarred look of street thugs who actively sought out violence. Standing at the very front of the pack was a broad-shouldered boy with shaggy brown hair, casually slapping a thick wooden wooden club against his open palm.

And hiding timidly behind the older boy’s leg, pointing a trembling but vindictive finger toward them, was a much smaller child.

Kyū and the girl recognized the brat instantly. It was the same kid she had punished with the cobblestones a week ago.

”Nii-san!” the younger boy shouted, his voice shrill with triumph. ”That’s her! That’s the ugly girl who tortured me!”
