Chapter 337: Chapter 336: The Panacea and the Green Expanse

Midori no Mura (Green Village) - The Village Square

The central plaza of the village, usually a vibrant intersection of gossip and trade, had been reduced to a grim staging ground for the dying. Dust hung thick in the stagnant air, settling over the sunken faces of those who had managed to drag themselves from their homes. Yet, the atmosphere of inescapable doom was beginning to fracture, replaced by a tentative, fragile wave of absolute disbelief.

At the center of the square, standing beside a row of massive, sloshing wooden water barrels, was Alaric.

He had discarded the intimidating formality of his flak jacket, standing in his simple, dark blue polo, his sleeves rolled up to expose the complex, ink-black sealing tattoos running down his forearms. He held a simple wooden ladle, dipping it into the gallons of water that had been imperceptibly altered by a single, microscopic drop of his Phoenix blood. To the naked eye, it was just water. To the dying, it was a literal elixir of life.

A ragged, desperate line had formed before him, composed of those who possessed just enough remaining strength to stand.

”Here. Drink it slowly,” Alaric instructed, his voice low and soothing, carefully guided by the subtle, charming Genjutsu that smoothed the sharp, predatory angles of his presence. He tilted the ladle toward the cracked lips of a frail, elderly woman.

She swallowed the small measure of water, her throat clicking dryly.

For a single heartbeat, nothing happened. Then, the miracle took root.

The woman gasped, her sunken eyes flying wide open as a rush of vibrant, healthy color flooded her pallid cheeks. The chronic trembling in her hands ceased instantly, her spine straightening as the absolute vitality of the Phoenix purged the starvation and disease from her failing cells. She stared at her own hands, flexing her fingers, before looking up at the towering blonde man with an expression of pure, unadulterated worship.

Alaric merely offered a gentle, dismissive nod, motioning her forward to make room for the next in line. ”Next.”

The effects were instantaneous and undeniable, sending ripples of shocked murmurs through the gathering crowd.

On the periphery of the square, Taro Nakamura and the two women from his residence were operating with a frantic, joyous energy. They carried smaller wooden buckets filled with the diluted remedy, moving among the villagers who were too weak to stand, lifting the heads of the bedridden and carefully coaxing the water down their throats.

As time marched on, a beautiful, compounding chain reaction began to sweep across the plaza.

Those who had already received the remedy did not return to their homes to rest. Reinvigorated by a boundless, unnatural energy, they immediately turned to assist their neighbors. They took up cups and bowls, receiving strict instructions from Alaric to distribute only small sips, and fanned out to aid Taro. The bedridden pushed themselves up from the dirt, weeping openly as they found the strength to walk.

Even more miraculously, the panacea did not discriminate between the famine’s victims and those burdened by prior tragedies. An older man, his leg crippled and twisted by a farming accident a decade prior, took a sip of the water and fell to his knees as the bone and sinew violently snapped back into perfect, painless alignment. He stood up on two healthy legs, laughing hysterically as he spun in a circle.

Alaric paused, the wooden ladle resting in his hand, and allowed his gaze to sweep over the revitalized crowd. He nodded to himself, a genuine, profound satisfaction settling in his chest.

In truth, the manual distribution was entirely unnecessary. He could have simply spawned a hundred shadow clones and force-fed the entire village in a matter of seconds, or vaporized the remedy into a localized rain cloud to heal them passively. However, this methodical approach was a calculated strategy.

While he poured the water and met their eyes, Alaric’s Mind’s Eye of the Kagura was operating at maximum capacity. He was scanning the biometric rhythms, the chakra fluctuations, and the emotional states of every single person in the line. He knew that while the majority of the village was innocent, starvation often bred monsters. He was actively hunting for the erratic pulse of guilt, the suppressed killing intent of a bandit who had slipped into the civilian populace, waiting to track them the moment they tried to flee.

It was both a fortunate blessing and a minor, tactical disappointment, but there were no bandits hiding here. The village was exactly what it appeared to be: a community of victims.

As the last few villagers received their treatment and the plaza erupted into a chaotic, weeping celebration of neighbors holding each other, Alaric took a slow step backward. He watched them for a moment longer, a soft, rare smile touching his lips. It was a good sight. A beautiful reminder of the resilience of ordinary people.

He didn’t wait for the inevitable wave of gratitude. He didn’t want them falling to their knees to worship him, nor did he want to explain the mechanics of his impossible cure.

Despite his massive, towering frame and head-turning features, slipping away from a distracted crowd was child’s play for a man of his caliber. He melded seamlessly into the peripheral shadows, stepping smoothly out of the plaza and navigating the narrow, winding dirt paths between the modest homes until he reached a secluded, dead-end alleyway.

Once entirely out of sight, he let out a long, quiet sigh, leaning his back against the wooden siding of a house.

”Well, that should be my role finished for now,” he murmured to the empty alley.

With a soft, dismissive poof, the towering figure of Alaric Jonathan Kenway vanished into a cloud of white smoke, revealing that the savior of the village square had been nothing more than a shadow clone all along.

Green Village - The Farmlands

The sudden influx of memories transferred from the dispelled clone rushed into the mind of the original Alaric, integrating seamlessly with a faint, phantom taste of stale water.

He was standing several miles away from the village center, positioned at the elevated edge of the region’s vast, terraced agricultural basin.

He took a slow, deliberate drag from his cigar, blowing a thick ring of smoke into the dry, unforgiving wind as he surveyed the devastation below. He could only sigh, his shoulders dropping marginally at the sheer scale of the agricultural ruin. As far as his enhanced vision could see, it was a desolate, cracked expanse of dead earth, littered with the withered, brown husks of failed crops.

Yet, beneath the bleakness, there was a profound tactical advantage.

’Thankfully, the farmlands still have the physical remnants of the crops rooted in them, albeit dead and brittle from the famine,’ Alaric analyzed, stepping down off the ridge and onto the parched soil. ’As long as the organic blueprint of the plant still exists in the dirt, it saves me an immense amount of mental processing. It is infinitely easier to resurrect and mutate an existing botanical structure than to imagine and continuously materialize the specific genetic code of wheat, rice, and vegetables from absolute scratch.’

He walked to the center of the nearest field, the dead stalks crunching loudly beneath his polished black boots. He stopped, adjusting the collar of his crimson coat against the wind.

He didn’t drop to his knees, nor did he slam his palms against the earth in a grand display of power.

Alaric simply brought his right hand up, extending his index and middle fingers, and formed the single, solitary seal of the Snake.

His blue eyes closed, his focus turning entirely inward to the vast, oceanic depths of his chakra. He tapped into the absolute pinnacle of his elemental affinities, channeling the pristine, golden-green energy of his Wood Release. He didn’t just push the chakra into the ground; he expanded it, weaving an invisible, subterranean net that stretched outward, covering several hectares of the dead farmlands in a matter of seconds.

At first, the world remained still. The wind howled, the dust blew, and nothing seemed to change.

But then, a deep, resonant thrum vibrated through the tectonic plates.

Alaric could feel the land taking its first, desperate breath.

From the cracked, desolate clay, vibrant, blindingly healthy green shoots erupted with explosive vitality. The dead, brown husks of the previous harvest were instantly consumed, their organic matter acting as fuel for the miraculous rebirth. Within seconds, the barren fields transformed. Towering stalks of golden wheat swayed heavy with grain, rice paddies flooded with fresh, crystal-clear water drawn from deep aquifers and sprouted thick, verdant clusters, while plump, ripe vegetables burst from the tilled rows.

The air itself shifted, shedding the dry, choking scent of dust to embrace the rich, intoxicating perfume of wet earth and aggressive, blossoming life.

Alaric carefully modulated his chakra output. He infused the root systems and the surrounding soil with just enough lingering Mokuton vitality to ensure that these specific farmlands would become permanently immune to blight, drought, or natural famine for generations to come. However, he deliberately held back from pushing the land to its absolute, monstrous limits.

He didn’t enchant the fields to produce harvestable yields multiple times a day, regardless of the season, like the heavily modified, hyper-capitalist farmlands surrounding Pennmere. This was an ordinary village; they needed stability to survive, not an aggressive agricultural monopoly that would inevitably draw the greedy, scrutinizing eyes of the Daimyo’s court.

Opening his eyes, Alaric looked out over the endless sea of green and gold that he had just painted across the dead world.

He took the cigar from his lips, examining the glowing cherry as a profound, philosophical thought drifted through his mind.

’I did a damn good job,’ Alaric mused, his internal monologue a mixture of quiet awe and clinical detachment. ’I am practically operating as a localized deity at this point. If I truly wanted to embrace the role, to sit on a throne and play God, I would be terrifyingly great at it. I could reshape this entire continent by the end of the week.’

But the thought held no allure. It was an empty, tedious fantasy.

’That’s just it... it’s playing God,’ he reasoned, shaking his head. ’I’m not a god, not like the old man Kami sitting in his white void watching movies, and I have absolutely no desire to be one. The bureaucracy of worship sounds exhausting.’

He wasn’t foolish enough to ignore his own reality. He knew, with absolute, unshakeable certainty, that even by the most absurd, legendary standards of this shinobi world, his abilities were disgustingly overpowered. He was an anomaly that broke the established math of the universe.

However, possessing the power to break the world did not compel him to shatter everything that crossed his path willy-nilly. Most of the time, he simply wanted to live a comfortable life, enjoy the company of his family, smoke premium tobacco, and build a lucrative empire. He was perfectly willing to beat someone to a bloody pulp or incinerate a mountain range if they threatened his peace, but his default state was one of profound, calculating calm.

He looked around the restored fields one last time, a slow nod of absolute satisfaction confirming his handiwork.

With a subtle flex of his will, bypassing the need for hand seals entirely, Alaric cloned himself. A perfect duplicate materialized beside him in a faint swirl of displaced air.

”Keep watch over this perimeter,” Alaric instructed his shadow clone, gesturing to the sprawling crops. ”The villagers will discover it soon enough, but I don’t want any opportunistic merchants or passing bandits swooping in to claim the harvest before the locals can secure it.”

The shadow clone offered a crisp nod, its expression mirroring Alaric’s own focused calm, before vanishing into the surrounding tree line with a burst of pure, untraceable speed.

”Right,” Alaric murmured, rolling his shoulders as he turned his gaze toward the eastern horizon, where the map in his mind indicated the next cluster of starving settlements. ”I should probably head to the next village. I have a long list of ledgers to correct today.”

He let out a quiet sigh, the crimson tails of his coat settling around his legs.

FLASH.

The farmlands were left in absolute, vibrant peace, the golden light of the Hiraishin the only evidence that a miracle worker had ever stood among the crops.
