Chapter 321: Chapter 320: Choice of Being Civilian

Konoha - Hokage Tower - The Office

Minutes bled into one another, expanding the silence until it felt as thick and heavy as the cigar smoke swirling near the ceiling.

Outside the heavy oak doors, the corridor was a hive of nervous, restless energy. The ANBU operatives, having been abruptly banished by their Hokage, remained stationed at the perimeter. They were elite, disciplined killers, yet they could not entirely suppress the gnawing curiosity and creeping dread of the unknown. They strained their heightened senses, trying to catch a whisper, a shift in air pressure, or the faint hum of chakra. But the doorway was a void. Alaric’s privacy seals were absolute, an impenetrable fortress of arithmetic and ink that rendered the Hokage’s office entirely deaf, blind, and numb to the outside world.

Inside the office, the storm of raw emotion had finally settled into a cautious, fragile calm.

Alaric had gently, but firmly, urged the legends of Konoha to take a seat and breathe. They now occupied the plush leather sofas arranged around the low coffee table. Alaric sat on the central sofa, an island of platinum-blonde composure. To his right, Tsunade and Hiruzen shared a couch, their postures rigid with the lingering shock of the impossible. To his left, Minato and Kushina sat close together, their hands entwined, radiating a warmth that defied the very concept of the grave.

Reclining against the cushions, Alaric took a slow, measured drag from his cigar. He exhaled a thin, fragrant plume of smoke, allowing the aromatic tobacco to anchor him before he met the piercing, expectant stares of the Sandaime and Godaime Hokage.

”As you can see... they’re alive,” Alaric started, his voice a smooth baritone that offered no apologies for the heart attacks he had likely induced.

He received flat, incredulous stares from both Hiruzen and Tsunade... looks that explicitly communicated how painfully obvious that statement was, yet simultaneously demanded the intricate, horrifying mechanics of how.

Alaric tapped the ash from his cigar into a crystal tray. ”...And I’ll be honest,” he continued, leaning forward slightly. ”I tampered with the essence of Edo Tensei.”

He braced himself. He fully expected a visceral backlash. He anticipated Tsunade leaping over the table to strangle him for dabbling in Orochimaru’s vile arts, or Hiruzen unleashing a lecture on the sanctity of the natural order.

But no violence came. All he received were calm, terrifyingly expectant stares, their silence demanding he finish the confession.

Alaric let out a quiet, internal sigh. ’Well... that’s a good feedback loop, I suppose.’

”I tried to see if I could fundamentally mess with the core algorithms of the Edo Tensei,” Alaric explained, carefully weaving a tapestry of half-truths and calculated lies. ”I was trying to figure out if I could cancel the jutsu remotely through environmental seals, trying to develop an easy, fail-safe counter should someone else ever attempt to use it against the village.”

He paused, letting his expression shift into something resembling genuine contrition.

”I admit, I did something highly illegal to test the theory. I went to the cemetery and took both Minato and Kushina’s bodies out of their graves. I needed the strongest possible genetic and spiritual anchors. I messed with the Shinigami’s stomach for a bit to trace the soul tether... and everything spiraled wildly out of control.”

Alaric rubbed the back of his neck, looking suitably chastened. ”Somehow... and fortunately, yet something that I deeply apologize for regarding messing with the foundational laws of the universe... the sealing array inverted. I accidentally revived Minato Namikaze and Kushina Uzumaki.”

”...”

”...”

Alaric remained perfectly calm on the surface, his blue eyes neutral as he patiently waited for their reply. Internally, however, a profound current of doubt gnawed at his stomach.

He wasn’t naturally gifted at lying. In his previous life, and for most of his time in the Elemental Nations, he had relied on brutal, unfiltered truths, preferring to simply use his overwhelming power to bulldoze through the resulting mess. But this time was different. He was surrounded by allies. Despite his initial detachment upon arriving in Konoha, he had genuinely grown to care about this village and the people in this room. He didn’t want to fracture their trust or face the moral scrutiny of the two Hokages for intentionally playing god.

To his left, Minato and Kushina did not share his internal nervousness. They were alive. They could feel the blood rushing through their veins and the air filling their lungs. The cosmic will of the universe, the sanctity of natural laws, the intricate politics of the village... none of it mattered to them. Even this procedural debriefing with Hiruzen and Tsunade was barely registering on their priority list. The only thought blazing in their minds was the desperate, all-consuming need to see Naruto.

”...”

”...”

Hiruzen and Tsunade looked at each other for a long, heavily communicative moment before turning their hardened gazes back to the anomaly sitting across from them.

”Did you have to specifically dig up Minato and Kushina’s graves?” Tsunade asked. She didn’t narrow her eyes, nor did she sound accusatory. She was profoundly, weepingly grateful that the two were revived. However, her sharp, analytical mind found the parameters of his ’accident’ highly suspicious. ”If it was merely an experiment to trace a tether, you could’ve just used any other bodies. Why them?”

Alaric took a moment, lifting the cigar to his lips to buy himself a few seconds of processing time.

”Well...” Alaric exhaled, offering a charming, perfectly executed shrug. ”...because no one would ever suspect the Yondaime and Kushina’s bodies to be dug up from the grave. It offered the most privacy for a highly volatile experiment.”

It was an explanation, certainly, but it deliberately skirted the true, emotional essence of her question. Yet, it was an answer she could not technically refute.

Tsunade stared at him, the hardened edges of the Hokage melting away as the vulnerability of a grieving woman surfaced. Her amber eyes softened, shimmering with a fragile, desperate hope as she swallowed the lump in her throat.

”Then,” Tsunade’s voice was uncharacteristically small, trembling with the ghosts of Dan and Nawaki. ”Can you...”

”If you’re talking about Nawaki, then no.”

Alaric cut her off instantly, his voice a sharp, uncompromising crack of thunder that shattered the illusion before she could even finish her sentence. He shook his head definitively.

”This situation was an absolute, catastrophic accident,” Alaric lied smoothly, his tone laced with a perfectly manufactured dread. ”I don’t want to mess with the Edo Tensei’s essence any further. It is inherently unstable and could lead to something irreparably bad.”

He leaned forward, his blue eyes locking onto Tsunade’s with a fierce, unwavering intensity. ”And... if the universe truly registered what I did today, and if I actively attempt to do it again? The universe would kill me for disrupting the cosmic balance. It demands an equivalent exchange. I could die in exchange for a person’s life... if that were to even succeed again, which I highly doubt.”

For once, everyone in the room saw what they believed to be absolute transparency in Alaric’s eyes. They saw the fear of cosmic retribution.

However, they were entirely oblivious to the fact that Alaric was flawlessly executing his bullshit-no-jutsu. He possessed the Phoenix Rebirth; death was a mild inconvenience to him, and he could theoretically revive the entire graveyard if he had the patience for the migraines. But this lie was a necessary shield. It protected them from the agony of false hope, and it protected him from becoming a necromantic vending machine.

For the Hokages, Alaric’s technical reasons barely mattered. No matter how reasonably he framed it as an ’accident,’ their minds simply couldn’t process the magnitude of the act. Alaric, in his humility, wouldn’t admit it, but in the deepest lore of their reality, true resurrection was a myth relegated to the Sage of Six Paths. To revive two souls into perfectly reconstructed, living flesh using only Fuinjutsu was basically impossible. But they chose to remain silent, burying the terrifying implications of his power beneath their overwhelming gratitude.

---Hours Later---

The initial shock had ebbed, replaced by the tedious, necessary gears of village administration. Over the next couple of hours, Alaric, Minato, and Kushina laid out their immediate plans to the current leadership.

Minato and Kushina’s request was simple, yet profound: they wanted to be civilians. They had sacrificed their lives for the village; now, they simply wanted to spend their borrowed time with their son, rebuilding the familial bonds that had been violently severed.

Tsunade, however, immediately countered. As the Hokage, she argued that at the very least, Minato and Kushina must be re-enlisted as formal, active-duty shinobi of Konoha. The village needed their strength, especially with the Akatsuki moving in the shadows.

Hiruzen stroked his beard, his brow deeply furrowed. ”Tsunade is right about our need for strength, but we must also consider the geopolitical fallout. If the other hidden villages learn that the Yellow Flash has returned from the grave, it could create massive chaos across the Elemental Nations. It shatters the balance of power entirely.”

”Imbalance?” Alaric scoffed, leaning back and crossing his arms. He countered Hiruzen’s logic with effortless disdain. ”Minato being alive is only troublesome to Konoha’s enemies, old man. And let’s be honest about this ’power imbalance’... it’s an illusion. Konoha has always been unfairly strong, no matter the era. You had Hashirama, Tobirama, yourself in your prime, the Sannin, the White Fang, the Yellow Flash. Complaining about being too strong is a luxury problem.”

Alaric turned his gaze to Tsunade. ”And at the very least, Minato and Kushina’s decision to remain civilians for now must be respected. They want to bond with Naruto. They earned that right with their blood.”

Tsunade frowned, resting her chin on her steepled hands. ”Naruto is a shinobi at heart, Alaric. You know him. Even if he reconnects with his parents, he isn’t going to settle down. He will still want to continue his life in the field, focusing on growing stronger to achieve his dream of becoming Hokage.”

Minato and Kushina exchanged a warm, incredibly proud glance. During the early hours of the debriefing, Tsunade and Hiruzen had thoroughly detailed Naruto’s growth... his bravery against his obstacles, his stubbornness, and his unwavering dream. Knowing their son carried the Will of Fire so brightly filled them with an indescribable joy.

”Your statement lacks logical continuity, Tsunade,” Alaric countered smoothly, dismissing her concern. ”I am not saying they should never re-enlist. But practically speaking, the moment they died sixteen years ago, they were automatically retired from the active roster. You cannot draft ghosts.”

He took another puff of his cigar, his eyes glinting with political mischief. ”You should simply respect their timeline. Let them re-enlist when they are ready. And when Minato eventually desires to act as Hokage again... well, there is no written law stating there can only be one active Kage. Hashirama and Tobirama worked together brilliantly despite both holding the absolute authority of the title.”

(I know Tobirama assumed the role as Hokage after Hashirama’s death, but role with me)

Alaric grinned, beginning to allure the two veteran politicians with the tantalizing prospect of unparalleled supremacy. ”Think about it. Three living Kages... yourself, Hiruzen, and Minato... operating simultaneously. It is utterly unprecedented. The administrative efficiency and the military deterrent would be a massive, untouchable plus for Konoha. But to get there, you need to leave Minato and Kushina alone for at least a month. Let them see how they fare in life just being a mother and a father.”

Tsunade and Hiruzen looked at each other. The sheer, overwhelming audacity of the proposal hung in the air.

Then, simultaneously, the Godaime and the Sandaime began to chuckle. The quiet laughter grew, echoing off the walls as the tension finally broke.

Hiruzen leaned back on the sofa, his eyes crinkling with deep, nostalgic amusement. He looked at the resurrected couple, then at the platinum-blonde anomaly.

”I still clearly recall the day Alaric arrived in this very office, when I was still the acting Kage,” Hiruzen shared, his voice carrying the rich timbre of a storyteller. ”He was a total enigma. A man who possessed an impossible wealth of classified information and a myriad of terrifying, varying abilities that deeply intrigued me.”

Hiruzen offered Alaric a knowing, deeply respectful smile, basically admitting his early manipulations in front of the man himself. ”I wanted to keep him close. Alaric was simply too strong, too dangerous to not firmly tie to the roots of Konoha. So... despite the fierce opposition from the council and the intense scrutiny of my advisors, I utilized my absolute power as Hokage to promote Alaric from an unknown civilian directly to Jonin, using his ’Genin’ student, Haku, as the political leverage to do so.”

Alaric chuckled softly around his cigar, acknowledging the play. He had always known how the political machinery worked, and he had willingly played his part in Hiruzen’s masterful game.

”And my instincts were correct,” Hiruzen continued, his tone turning profoundly solemn. ”Alaric was the singular key to how successfully Konoha countered Orochimaru’s invasion, despite the enemy possessing the element of surprise and the backing of Sunagakure. He saved us then.”

Hiruzen bowed his head slightly toward the man in the crimson coat. ”And now... Alaric has granted favors to Konoha once more, returning its greatest heroes. I am eternally, deeply thankful.”

This was the first time Minato and Kushina had heard the full context of Alaric’s entrance into the shinobi world. They looked at the man who had resurrected them with wide eyes, utterly surprised by the sheer, village-saving magnitude of his brief history in their home. Even Tsunade looked at him with a renewed, softened respect.

Alaric, however, felt a sudden, uncharacteristic flush of warmth at the back of his neck. He wasn’t used to genuine, sentimental praise.

He looked away, acting a little shy as he casually took a long, defensive drag from his cigar.

”Come on, mate,” Alaric mumbled, scratching his cheek as he blew the smoke toward the ceiling. ”I’m not here to fish for compliments.”

”...”

”...”

”...”

The profound, emotional atmosphere of the room instantly flatlined. Minato blinked. Tsunade tilted her head. Hiruzen lowered his pipe.

”...Mate?” Minato repeated, thoroughly confused by the sudden, bizarre shift into foreign slang.
