Chapter 345: Chapter 344: The Architect of Absolution

Konoha - Hokage Tower - The Office

Hiruzen took a slow, trembling step forward, waving a weathered hand to order the ANBU to lower their blades. The porcelain-masked operatives hesitated for a fraction of a second before complying, their tantōs retreating into the shadows, though their killing intent remained coiled and ready.

”...How have you been... young man?”

Itachi looked at Hiruzen, his dark onyx eyes locking onto the aged, grief-stricken face of the Third Hokage. For a fleeting moment, the impenetrable mask of the Akatsuki criminal wavered, revealing the exhausted man who had sacrificed his soul for a village that despised him. Then, with a quiet, nearly imperceptible exhale, Itachi lowered his gaze to the floorboards.

”It’s not good, huh?” Hiruzen stared at Itachi sadly, the crushing weight of his past decisions suddenly threatening to bow his spine. He harbored a profound, inescapable guilt in how he had handled the village’s darkest hours, and the tragic fate of Itachi Uchiha was the heaviest stone in that burden.

Behind them, the leather of the sofa creaked softly. Alaric took a slow, deliberate drag from his cigar, leaning back into the plush cushions as he watched the reunion unfold. He crossed one leg over the other, a silent observer holding all the cards.

Tsunade massaged her throbbing temples, the sheer volume of impossible events tonight threatening to split her skull in two. With a sharp, upward flick of her wrist, she signaled the ANBU to position themselves back in the ceiling rafters. As the operatives melted seamlessly into the darkness above, she walked heavily back to her seat behind the mahogany desk, dropping into the chair with a profound sigh.

”So?” Tsunade demanded, her amber eyes darting between the three men, her voice laced with the weary authority of a leader tired of being kept in the dark. ”Are there any more world-shattering secrets I need to know? I am the current Hokage, after all. If the most wanted man in the Fire Country is standing in my office alongside a Jonin who can bypass my highest security wards on a whim, I demand the context.”

Hiruzen looked at Tsunade, then at Itachi’s lowered head, before finally turning to Alaric. The blonde anomaly merely gave a single, encouraging nod, granting the old man the silent permission to tear open the village’s deepest wounds.

Hiruzen let out a long, shuddering sigh. ”Yes. I think it is past time for Itachi’s case to be brought to the light.”

The Sandaime Hokage stepped closer to Tsunade’s desk, his aged eyes meeting hers with a sorrow so profound it seemed to age him another decade.

”Tsunade... what you know of him... what the entire village knows... is only the surface of a much deeper, darker river,” Hiruzen began, his voice rasping with the grit of unspoken sins. ”It is a river I helped steer into the abyss all those years ago. And for that, I carry more regret than I can ever voice.”

He paused, the confession already tasting like ash on his tongue. He turned his head, looking at the towering man lounging on the sofa with a silent, desperate plea in his eyes.

”Alaric,” Hiruzen asked quietly, ”do you happen to have an extra cigar with you? I find that I would rather smoke one right now before I say another word.”

Alaric raised a platinum brow, slightly amused by the request, before nodding his head. He pulsed a fraction of chakra into his storage tattoo, unsealing one of the expensive, premium cigars he had purchased from a high-end vendor in the streets of Konoha three years prior. With a casual flick of his wrist, he tossed the cigar across the room.

Hiruzen caught it deftly, bringing the rich tobacco to his lips.

Before the Hokage could reach into his robes for a match, Alaric simply extended his index finger. He didn’t weave a sign. He didn’t draw a breath. He merely willed it, and a tiny, perfectly condensed spark of golden-orange fire materialized directly at the tip of Hiruzen’s cigar, igniting the tobacco with absolute, pinpoint precision.

Hiruzen’s bushy brows raised in slight surprise, puffing the cigar to life. Tsunade’s eyes widened drastically, her jaw tightening. Even Itachi, who had spent his life surrounded by masters of the Uchiha’s signature element, continued observing with a stoic face, though deep inside, he was profoundly amazed. The sheer, terrifying micro-control required to manifest and manipulate Fire Release at a distance without a medium or a jutsu formula was beyond elite.

One singular thought echoed simultaneously in the heads of the three shinobi: ’His chakra control is absolutely insane...’

Shaking his awe away, Hiruzen exhaled a thick cloud of smoke, letting the nicotine settle his fraying nerves. The room seemed to hold its breath as he began.

”It started with the Uchiha clan’s growing unrest,” Hiruzen explained, each word chosen with the agonizing care of a man who had replayed this confession in his mind a thousand times. ”They felt sidelined, Tsunade... pushed to the margins of the village after the Nine-Tails attack, their proud legacy reduced to whispers of suspicion. Whispers that eventually festered into concrete plans for a coup d’état.”

”I knew of the tension...” Tsunade murmured, leaning forward, her hands steepled beneath her chin.

”The council... Danzo especially... saw only one path forward to avert a civil war... total elimination,” Hiruzen continued, his voice dropping into a hollow, defeated register. ”They came to me in the dead of night, arguing that the village’s survival demanded it. I... resisted at first. I argued for dialogue, for reform, for anything that might spare the innocent. But the pressure mounted like a storm I couldn’t outrun. Danzo’s roots ran too deep, his ANBU loyal to a ruthless vision of Konoha unburdened by internal threats. In the end, I yielded... not out of cowardice, but out of the terrible, unforgiving calculus of leadership. One clan’s fall, I told myself, to save the whole. And Itachi... he was the blade we turned to.”

Hiruzen paused, his gaze drifting back to the younger Uchiha, the sadness in his eyes deepening into something almost reverent.

”You were only thirteen when they approached you, Itachi,” Hiruzen whispered, the number sounding utterly obscene in the quiet office. ”Thirteen, and already burdened with the crushing weight of genius and duty. They gave you an impossible order... slaughter your own blood to prevent greater bloodshed. Spare your younger brother, infiltrate the Akatsuki as our eyes from within, and bear the brand of a traitor so the world would never suspect Konoha’s hand in the massacre. It was a poison pill wrapped in necessity, and I... I let it happen.”

The grandfather clock ticked loudly, measuring the seconds of a tragedy that could never be undone.

”I watched you walk away from everything,” Hiruzen said, his voice cracking. ”Your family, your home, your very name... knowing the truth would die with the few of us who carried it. The village branded you an S-rank criminal because the lie had to hold. Publicly, you were the monster who turned on his clan for power. Privately, you were our shadow guardian, feeding us intelligence that kept threats at bay for years.”

Hiruzen took another drag from the cigar, his hand shaking so badly the ash fell to the floor.

”I told myself it was the only way. That your sacrifice bought peace,” Hiruzen confessed, tears shining in his aged eyes. ”But every report of your ’crimes,’ every new bounty placed on your head... it chipped away at my soul. I failed you, young man. I failed to find another path, failed to shield you from the monstrous weight I placed on your shoulders. And now, standing here, I see the cost in your eyes... and I wonder if Konoha truly deserved such unyielding loyalty.”

The words hung between them, layered with the raw, bleeding honesty of a man unburdening himself at last.

Tsunade leaned back, her expression a careful mask of composure, though her knuckles whitened against the desk’s edge. She had heard fragments of this before... dark rumors, half-truths redacted from old files... but to hear it laid out so plainly, woven with the Third’s personal guilt, was nauseating.

Itachi remained perfectly still, absorbing the confession without interruption, his lowered gaze hiding whatever tempest stirred beneath his calm exterior.

Alaric, his cigar still smoldering between his fingers, watched the exchange with quiet intensity, the smoke veiling his features like a shroud of calculated patience.

Tsunade broke the silence first. Her voice was measured but firm, the uncompromising weight of her position settling over her like an iron mantle.

”That’s... a heavier truth than most could ever stomach, Sensei,” Tsunade admitted, rubbing her temples once more as if the headache had sharpened into a physical blade. ”But if the village learns that Itachi acted under orders... under our orders... the political backlash could fracture everything we’ve rebuilt. The Uchiha name still carries deep, bleeding scars. People remember the massacre; they don’t forget the blood in the streets or the headlines that painted him as a villain.”

Alaric rose then. The leather sofa creaked softly as he stood, stepping over to the coffee table to stub out his cigar in an ashtray with deliberate, unhurried care. He crossed the room in smooth strides, his presence commanding yet never overbearing, and stopped directly beside Itachi, offering a nod of quiet solidarity. ”With that in mind...”

”...I want him back on the Shinobi roster of Konoha,” Alaric stated simply. The demand landed like a stone in still water... clear, unyielding, and absolutely impossible to ignore. ”Fully reinstated. No more shadows, no more exile. He’s earned it tenfold... hundredfold.”

Tsunade exchanged a long, exasperated glance with Hiruzen, both of them sharing the same weary, bureaucratic understanding that flickered across their faces.

”It won’t be easy, Alaric,” Tsunade argued, her tone reflecting the harsh realities of governance. ”The public record is damning. Mission reports, wanted posters, survivor testimonies... Sasuke’s own traumatic accounts from back then. Turning that kind of deeply ingrained hatred around... it would take a miracle, not a decree. The villagers would riot at the mere thought of welcoming a ’mass murderer’ home.”

Hiruzen nodded slowly, his expression mirroring her deep concern, though a faint, desperate spark of hope kindled in his eyes at the prospect of finally righting his greatest wrong.

”She is correct, Alaric. Reputation in this village is like bedrock... once it is cracked, it is notoriously hard to mend without shaking the foundations to dust,” Hiruzen agreed softly. ”Itachi’s name evokes pure fear first, and loyalty second, if at all. We would need ironclad proof, absolute public buy-in... and even then, the council remnants who remember the old orders might actively resist his return.”

Alaric’s lips curved into a faint, knowing smile, the kind of smile that suggested he had already mapped out the entire battlefield and was simply waiting for them to catch up to his strategy. He placed a steady hand on Itachi’s shoulder... a brief, grounding gesture that conveyed more solid support than words ever could... before turning fully to face the two Hokages.

”Just because it’s hard doesn’t mean it’s impossible,” Alaric countered, his tone even and laced with an unshakeable, terrifying confidence. ”We don’t wait for the narrative to change. We create the narrative ourselves.”

He began to pace slowly, slipping his hands into his pockets.

”A pamphlet distributed across the Hidden Leaf, detailing the absolute truth in plain, undeniable language... Itachi’s sacrifice, the shadow council’s illegal orders, the greater good he protected,” Alaric outlined smoothly. ”Or better yet, a serialized expose in the Konoha Times: front-page stories backed by declassified files, witness accounts from those who knew the real story. We flood the streets with the truth until the one-hundred-eighty-degree turn feels organic and inevitable, rather than forced. People believe what they read when it comes from trusted sources... especially when those sources are the village’s own highly classified archives, unsealed at last.”

He paused, letting the sheer audacity of the media campaign settle into their minds, then leaned forward slightly, resting one large palm on the edge of Tsunade’s desk in a gesture that was neither aggressive nor deferential, merely purposeful.

”And we can go further. We can name the true architect of the whole tragedy,” Alaric said, his blue eyes gleaming with predatory intellect. ”Danzo Shimura is already dead... three years gone... and the grave makes an excellent scapegoat when the corpse can no longer speak in its own defense.”

Tsunade and Hiruzen froze.

”We tell the village exactly what happened,” Alaric continued seamlessly, weaving the perfect lie. ”That Danzo, operating in the shadows even then, pressured the council, bypassed Hokage oversight, and gave Itachi the final, impossible order. We frame the truth plainly... Danzo’s paranoia, his obsession with ’absolute security,’ his ruthless willingness to sacrifice an entire clan to preserve his twisted version of Konoha. The massacre becomes not a rogue act by a prodigy gone mad, but the culmination of one man’s unchecked, treasonous extremism.”

Alaric looked at Hiruzen. ”The Sandaime tried to stop it... he fought for another way, but was circumvented. Itachi was caught in the middle... a thirteen-year-old child, forced to choose between his family and a global war, and he chose the village at the cost of everything else. Danzo bears the blame because Danzo orchestrated it. The rest of us... the living... get to own the cleanup.”

The words landed like a thrown kunai, sinking deep into the political reality of the room.

However, it wasn’t the brilliant strategy that derailed the conversation. It was the casual, horrifying footnote attached to it.

Hiruzen actually rocked back on his heels, one hand rising instinctively to clutch at the collar of his kimono as though the floor had violently tilted beneath him. The old Hokage’s mouth opened, closed, then opened again, the question scraping out in a hoarse whisper that carried far more disbelief than demand.

”Three years gone...?” Hiruzen echoed, his voice cracking on the edge of something raw. ”Alaric... what do you mean by that? Danzo fled three years ago. He vanished because he was afraid Orochimaru would reveal everything about his treason before dying. We assumed he went into hiding, that he was still out there pulling strings from the dark. You’re telling me he’s been dead all this time?”

Alaric met the old man’s horrified gaze without a single flinch. He shook his head once, slowly.

”I’m sorry, old man,” Alaric said, his tone entirely unapologetic. ”But Danzo died. That day... he didn’t flee. He simply ceased to exist.”

Hiruzen’s breath left him in a ragged exhale. ”How?”

”It’s a long story, we had a rather explosive clash on the monument...” Alaric replied quietly, his expression remaining maddeningly steady. ”I’ll tell you... both of you... another time. When the room isn’t already carrying so much emotional weight.”

Tsunade slammed her palm down on the desk hard enough to make the ink bottles rattle and the scrolls stacked nearby quiver in place. ”Alaric!”

”You don’t get to decide when the story gets told!” Tsunade snapped, her voice low and incredibly dangerous, radiating the kind of lethal tone that had once silenced entire battlefields during the Second War. ”You’re a Jonin of this village, Alaric! My village! You swore the same oaths the rest of us did! And you stand there and basically admit you executed one of Konoha’s council elders... without a trial, without a formal report, without so much as a whisper to the chain of command... and you think you can just wave it off for later?”

Hiruzen lifted a hand, the motion swift but gentle, placing it between the glaring Hokage and the unbothered anomaly like a barrier of weathered authority.

”Tsunade,” Hiruzen said firmly, though his voice still trembled from the earlier shock. ”Know your place.”

Her head snapped toward him, her amber eyes blazing with unchecked fury. ”My place? I am the Hokage, Sensei! Not some Genin who needs to be reminded of basic protocol! He may be strong... stronger than almost anyone still breathing in the shinobi world... but raw strength doesn’t grant him the license to execute council members in secret and then stroll back into my office like it’s nothing! I already bent every rule in the book for him... gave him free rein to come and go without notifying a soul, no mission logs, no gate checks... and now this? You expect me to just swallow that Danzo’s been dead for three years because Alaric says so?”

Alaric raised a hand, his palm facing out... not in surrender, but in a calm, immovable interruption.

”Okay, pause... this is different,” Alaric said, his voice absolutely level, cutting cleanly through her rising fury like a scythe through silk. ”And let’s be precise about our history: you didn’t grant me a favor, Tsunade. We made an arrangement. A mutually beneficial contract regarding the Fire Capital’s budget and my travel rights. Nothing more, nothing less. I kept my end of the bargain, which is actually the good news I told you about earlier today. And you are going to keep yours. That shouldn’t change just because the trash took itself out three years ago.”

The words hung between them, completely stripped of heat but carrying an undeniable, crushing finality.

Tsunade held his gaze for a long, agonizing moment, her chest rising and falling as she forced air through her clenched teeth. She knew he was right about the contract; if it was true, then his intervention in the Capital had saved the village from economic collapse. But the sheer arrogance of the man was infuriating.

Then, slowly... very slowly... she exhaled a long, shuddering breath and leaned back heavily into her chair. The fire in her eyes banked... not extinguished, but banked all the same. She rubbed a hand across her face, her fingers pressing hard against her temples as though trying to physically contain the headache that had just tripled in size. 𝑓𝑟ℯℴ𝓂

”Fine,” Tsunade muttered at last, the word ground out like crushed gravel. ”Another time. But do not think for a second that this conversation is over.”

Hiruzen gave her a small, profoundly grateful nod before turning back to Alaric. The old man’s expression had steadied, though the shock still lingered in the faint tremor of his hands. ”Then we proceed with what we have.”

Tsunade’s eyes narrowed, not in rejection, but in the sharp, cynical calculation of a leader weighing political fallout against moral necessity. She tapped one fingernail against the polished wood of her desk, the soft rhythm betraying the gears turning behind her composed expression.

”Anyways, back to the matter of Danzo... you’re asking us to hang the entire, bloody scandal of the Uchiha massacre on a dead man’s neck,” she said with a deeply annoyed expression, though there was no real objection in her voice... only the weary pragmatism of someone who had seen too many bodies buried for the sake of appearances. ”It’s convenient. Too convenient, some will say. The old guard in the administration who still whisper Danzo’s name like scripture won’t like having their martyr turned into the primary villain of the tale.”

”They won’t like it,” Hiruzen exhaled slowly through his nose, the sound almost a chuckle devoid of humor. His gaze drifted toward the window, where the carved stone faces of past leaders were staring down in silent judgment. ”But they’ll have absolutely no proof to contradict it. Danzo kept his secrets brutally close; most of his black operations died with him. What records remain are sealed under my old authority... or yours now, Tsunade. We control what sees daylight. And the truth, stripped of Danzo’s shadow, is ugly enough without needing embellishment.”

Hiruzen turned back to look at the silent Uchiha. ”Itachi acted under direct, illegal orders from Root. The massacre was meant to prevent civil war, yes... but it was Danzo who insisted no other path existed, who actively refused every compromise I proposed. If we lay the foundation of the story there, the village will accept it. Grief needs a target. Better a dead conspirator than a living brother who never deserved the hate.”

Itachi had remained silent through the entire, volatile exchange, his dark eyes fixed somewhere in the middle distance, absorbing each layer of the plan without visible reaction. Yet when he finally spoke, his voice was low and measured, carrying the same quiet gravity that had once made even the most seasoned shinobi pause in dread.

”I have no objection to the truth being told,” Itachi began, lifting his gaze slowly... first to meet Tsunade’s steady, searching eyes, then Hiruzen’s, where sorrow still lingered like smoke that refused to clear. ”But there is one condition I will not bend on.”

He looked at all three of them, his Sharingan remaining dormant, but his will absolute.

”The name of the Uchiha must not be further tainted,” Itachi declared softly. ”If your plan can restore my standing without dragging the clan’s legacy through more mud... if it can explicitly show the village that the unrest was not born from some inherent rot or curse within my people, but from deliberate manipulation imposed from outside... then I will go along with it. I won’t care what name they call me, or what title they pin to my back. Use me however you must. But the Uchiha were proud, loyal, and fierce long before suspicion poisoned them. I will not allow the last echo of that pride to be erased for the sake of political convenience.”

He paused, letting the immense weight of his words settle into the room like fine ash. Then, almost as an afterthought that carried far more gravity than casualness, he added a revelation that shattered the room’s remaining equilibrium.

”And... Danzo was not merely the one who gave the final order. He was the architect of the unrest itself.”

Hiruzen’s head snapped up. Tsunade stopped tapping the desk.

”I know this because I saw the files,” Itachi continued, his voice as cold as ice. ”Every coded directive, every planted rumor, every carefully staged incident meant to fan the flames of discontent among the clan elders. They were hidden in his most secret office, the one even Root’s inner circle rarely entered. I read them the night before the massacre. Danzo didn’t just exploit the tension; he manufactured it. Step by step. Year by year.”

A stunned, horrified hush fell over the office. Hiruzen’s breath caught audibly, the old man’s lined face paling as though the revelation had reopened a festering wound he had long believed scabbed over. Tsunade’s fingers stilled entirely on the desk, her sharp hazel eyes narrowing... not in disbelief, but in the sudden, cold recognition of exactly how deep the rot had run in her grandfather’s village.

Alaric, who had been leaning casually against the edge of the desk, straightened fractionally. One dark brow arched in quiet surprise, marking the very first crack in his usual mask of unruffled certainty. He studied Itachi with renewed interest, as though reassessing the profound depth of the man he had already decided to welcome into his fold.

Itachi’s right hand moved then... slow, deliberate, and almost ceremonial. From the wide, dark sleeve of his Akatsuki cloak, he drew a small, weathered storage scroll. Its surface was marked with faint ink seals that had once been crisp but were now softened by years of careful handling. He unrolled it across his palm, his chakra flaring briefly along his fingertips in a controlled pulse of indigo light.

The air above the scroll shimmered, and with a rapid series of soft pops that sounded like distant fireworks, a neat, heavy stack of sealed scrolls materialized on the low coffee table between them.

There were perhaps a dozen in total, each bound with the same austere black cord and stamped unmistakably with Root’s stylized, shadowed seal.

”These are the records,” Itachi said simply, gesturing toward the stack. ”Every action Danzo took, from the earliest, toxic whispers he seeded among the Uchiha police force to the final instructions he gave me on the night of the massacre. Surveillance logs. Forged intelligence reports. Payments to informants inside the clan compound. Orders to purposefully escalate tensions after the Nine-Tails attack. Copies of correspondence between him and certain council members who happily turned a blind eye. Everything I could take without arousing immediate suspicion before I left the village.”

The silence that followed was profound, broken only by the faint rustle of Hiruzen’s robes as the former Hokage leaned forward, his eyes wide with a mixture of horror and vindication.

Tsunade rose slowly from her chair, the movement deliberate, almost reverent. She crossed the room to the low table and lifted the topmost scroll, turning it carefully in her hands as though it were both damning evidence and a live explosive.

”If these are genuine,” Tsunade said quietly, her voice carrying the careful, dangerous weight of someone weighing absolute justice against pragmatism, ”or even if they are only believable enough to withstand heavy scrutiny... then yes. It changes everything.”

She looked at Hiruzen, then at Itachi.

”We won’t just shift the blame... we’ll bury it,” Tsunade promised, her amber eyes burning with the Will of Fire. ”Danzo becomes the sole architect of the tragedy. The Uchiha become victims of his paranoia rather than instigators of their own downfall. The village can mourn what was done to them instead of fearing what they might have done.” She looked up, meeting Itachi’s gaze directly, offering him the absolution he had never asked for but deeply deserved. ”I’ll have these scanned, cross-referenced, and studied... quietly, by people I trust implicitly. No leaks until we’re ready to drop the hammer. If they hold up under verification, we’ll use every single scrap to frame the narrative exactly as you’ve asked: the clan’s honor preserved, Danzo’s shadow laid bare for what it was. The rest of us will deal with the political fallout.”

Itachi inclined his head once, a small, respectful gesture that carried absolute finality. ”Then I leave them in your hands, Hokage-sama.”

Alaric exhaled a breath through his nose, the sound almost a laugh entirely devoid of humor.

”Well,” Alaric murmured, mostly to himself as he looked at the stack of treasonous documents, ”that’s one hell of an insurance policy you’ve been carrying around all these years, Uchiha.”

He shook his head once, the faintest trace of genuine admiration flickering behind his electric-blue eyes before he masked it again beneath his casual smirk.

”Guess we’ve got more ammunition than I thought.”
