Chapter 313: Chapter 312: The Echoes of the Past and the Price of Miracles

---Konoha - The Kenway Compound - Dining Room---

The paper bags in Haku’s arms crinkled loudly, the mundane sound opposite against the suffocating impossibility of the scene before him.

He stood frozen in the archway of the dining room. His mind, usually a pristine landscape of calculated ice and calm logic, short-circuited. He had seen Alaric bend space, command terrifying sums of wealth, and swat away S-rank criminals with casual disdain. But this? This was not bending the rules of the shinobi world. This was shattering the fundamental architecture of the universe.

Sitting across from his Sensei were the ghosts of an era long past.

”...Sensei?” Haku breathed, his voice barely more than a tremulous whisper.

Alaric paused mid-sip of his tea. He lowered the porcelain cup, his expression utterly undisturbed, and gestured casually toward the empty chair to his right.

”Ah, Haku. Perfect timing,” Alaric greeted, his tone as light as if he were introducing a visiting merchant rather than the resurrected leaders of the village. ”Come in, sit down. Don’t drop the groceries; those are for dinner.”

Haku swallowed hard. He stepped forward with deliberate, mechanical care, setting the paper bags onto a side counter before turning back to the table. His eyes locked onto Minato Namikaze, tracking the rise and fall of the man’s chest, the living warmth radiating from his chakra coils, the vibrant cerulean of his eyes. There was no Edo Tensei ash. There were no cracks in his skin.

It was a perfect, undeniably biological life.

Haku immediately fell into a deep, precise bow, the angle conveying the absolute maximum respect a shinobi could offer. ”Lord Fourth. Lady Uzumaki. It is an immense honor to stand in your presence.”

Minato offered a gentle, reassuring smile, raising a hand to wave off the formality. ”Please, there’s no need for such titles here. We are guests in your home, and from what Alaric has told us, the title of Hokage currently belongs to someone else.”

”Indeed,” Alaric chimed in, leaning back in his chair. ”Minato, Kushina... this is Yuki Haku. My student, my ward, and arguably the most terrifying teenager currently walking the continent.”

Kushina, who had been wiping the lingering tears from her eyes with a cloth napkin, let out a watery, beautiful laugh. The sheer vitality of her presence seemed to warm the room. She looked at Haku with a mother’s evaluating gaze, noting his polite demeanor and the hidden, dangerous grace in his stance.

”It’s a pleasure to meet you, Haku-kun,” Kushina smiled warmly. ”Any student of Alaric-san must be incredibly skilled. Tell me... are you Naruto’s teammate?”

Haku straightened his posture, his hands resting respectfully at his sides. He shook his head slightly, the bells on his hair ribbons chiming with a soft, melodic sound.

”I am not, Lady Uzumaki,” Haku answered, his voice returning to its usual serene cadence. ”I operate as an independent Jonin under the direct orders of the Fifth Hokage. I only accompanied Team 7 to Sunagakure in the capacity of a vice-captain for that specific rescue operation.”

Minato’s sharp, analytical mind immediately caught the subtle distinctions in rank and structure. He set his chopsticks down, his curiosity piqued.

”A Jonin already? That is an impressive feat for your age, Haku,” Minato noted, his eyes crinkling at the corners. ”But if you were the vice-captain, who are the actual members of Team 7 currently? Alaric mentioned them earlier, but I’d like to hear about the dynamics from someone who fought alongside them.”

Haku inclined his head, stepping closer to the table but remaining standing out of deference.

”Team 7 is led by Kakashi Hatake, who serves as the Jonin commander,” Haku explained methodically. ”The core squad consists of Sasuke Uchiha and Sakura Haruno, both of whom have recently been promoted to Chunin, and your son, Naruto Uzumaki, who is currently ranked as a Genin.”

The dining room fell silent for a heartbeat.

Kushina blinked, her violet eyes darting between Haku and Alaric as if waiting for the punchline of a joke. ”Wait... a Genin?” She frowned, her maternal pride bristling instinctively. ”My Naruto is still a Genin? While the rest of his team are Chunin and Kakashi is a Jonin? What kind of weird, unbalanced squad dynamic is that?”

Minato mirrored his wife’s confusion, his brow furrowing. ”A mixed-rank squad handling an S-class mission involving the Akatsuki? That defies standard Konoha protocol. A Genin shouldn’t have been authorized to cross the border for a threat of that magnitude.”

Alaric chuckled, a low, rumbling sound of amusement as he poured himself another cup of tea. ”The dynamic of the team is indeed incredibly weird, Minato. By all conventional military logic, it shouldn’t work. It’s a logistical nightmare on paper. But for some inexplicable, chaotic reason... it works flawlessly.”

Haku nodded in agreement, taking over the explanation to soothe the parents’ rising concern.

”Naruto’s rank does not reflect his capabilities, Lady Uzumaki,” Haku assured her, his voice carrying genuine respect. ”For the past three years, Naruto was away from the village on an intense, long-term training journey with Master Jiraiya. Because of this extended absence, he was simply unable to participate in the bi-annual Chunin Exams.”

Haku paused, his gaze darkening slightly as he recalled the bloody history of his early days in the village. ”In fact, the only Chunin Exam he participated in was his first one... the exam that was violently interrupted by Orochimaru’s invasion of Konoha. Due to the catastrophic end of those trials, Shikamaru Nara was the only Genin promoted from that entire generation.”

The temperature in the room plummeted.

Minato’s posture snapped from relaxed to rigid, the aura of the Yellow Flash flaring to life in an instant. Kushina gasped, her hands gripping the edge of the mahogany table.

”Orochimaru invaded Konoha?” Minato demanded, his voice dropping to a terrifyingly calm, absolute zero. The name of the Snake Sannin was one he knew well; a genius whose morality had rotted long before Minato had taken the hat. ”An invasion during the Chunin Exams? That means the village was packed with civilians, foreign dignitaries, and Genin. How did Konoha handle an assault of that magnitude?”

Haku looked at the fiercely protective parents, then slowly shifted his gaze to the man sitting at the head of the table. He looked back at Minato and Kushina, a profound, unshakeable reverence entering his brown eyes.

”You should probably ask Sensei for the details of that day,” Haku said softly. ”While the Third Hokage and the village forces fought valiantly... Sensei was the singular, key aspect of how Konoha was able to counterattack and crush the invasion with minimal losses. He altered the fate of the village.”

Minato and Kushina slowly turned their heads, their wide eyes locking onto the platinum-blonde man who was currently trying, and failing, to look deeply invested in the remaining slice of his tamagoyaki.

”You...” Minato started, the awe in his voice raw and unfiltered. ”You stopped a Sannin’s invasion?”

Alaric sighed, abandoning the omelet. He waved a dismissive hand, the golden rings on his fingers catching the morning light.

”Haku exaggerates,” Alaric deflected smoothly, a charming, self-deprecating smile masking the truth. ”I just threw a few punches, placed a couple of seals, and made sure the old man didn’t do anything stupid like sacrificing his soul to a Shinigami. It was a team effort.”

Haku’s polite smile widened just a fraction, knowing full well that ’a couple of seals’ meant completely rewriting the battlefield and matching two resurrected Hokage blow for blow. But he held his tongue, allowing his Sensei his preferred shroud of mystery.

”Regardless of past invasions,” Alaric continued, deftly shifting the topic back to the precarious present. ”We have an immediate logistical problem. Before you even think about approaching Naruto, you need to announce your revival to Hiruzen and Tsunade.”

Kushina frowned, her heart aching at the prospect of further delay. ”Why? Why can’t we just go to our son now? We’ve lost sixteen years, Alaric-san. I don’t want to lose another hour to politics.”

”Because your son is currently under the watchful eye of a village that still believes you are a stone monument, Kushina,” Alaric replied gently but firmly. ”If you suddenly appear on the streets, the ANBU will treat you as enemy imposters under a transformation jutsu. It will cause a panic that could escalate into violence.”

Alaric leaned forward, his blue eyes turning serious. ”You must go to the Hokage Tower. You must verify your identities through whatever blood or chakra seals the village uses for ultimate confirmation. And... most importantly... you must help me craft a lie.”

Minato’s eyes narrowed in thought. ”A lie regarding the method of our resurrection?”

”Exactly,” Alaric nodded, his expression turning grim. ”If the world learns that there is a man in Konoha who can flawlessly resurrect the dead without a blood sacrifice, my life will never know peace again. Every Daimyo, every grieving Kage, every wealthy merchant who lost a child will march on this village demanding miracles. Wars would be fought over the rights to my Fuinjutsu.”

He tapped a finger against the polished wood of the table. ”We keep the Shinsei Tensei a strict, absolute secret. You can tell Hiruzen and Tsunade that you survived through an ancient, dormant Uzumaki seal that finally activated, or that the Shinigami spat you out due to a technicality. I don’t care what story you weave, but my involvement in conquering death remains buried.”

Haku, who had been listening to the tactical planning with quiet focus, suddenly stiffened. The words echoed in his mind, the puzzle pieces violently snapping together.

Resurrection.Conquering death.Without a blood sacrifice.

Haku’s eyes widened to the size of saucers. His normally immaculate composure shattered entirely. He stared at Minato and Kushina, truly seeing the impossibility of their existence for the first time.

”Revival?” Haku blurted out, the word tearing from his throat. He looked at Alaric, his heart hammering against his ribs. ”So you... you actually resurrected Yondaime-sama and Lady Uzumaki? Like... they literally, physically died sixteen years ago, and you brought them back? True resurrection?”

Alaric didn’t answer with words. He merely offered Haku a slow, enigmatic smile, taking a final sip of his tea.

Haku’s senses went numb. The sheer scale of the blasphemy against nature was paralyzing. He was well-versed in Fuinjutsu; he understood the unbreakable laws of equivalence. To bring back life required an equal exchange.

”Wait...” Haku’s voice trembled slightly, stepping closer to the table. ”Let’s say you did revive them perfectly. A jutsu of that magnitude... a defiance of the universe’s natural order... that should come with a catastrophic price, shouldn’t it? What did you sacrifice, Sensei?”

Alaric’s smile didn’t waver, but his blue eyes darkened just a fraction, holding secrets that were too heavy for the morning light. He remained entirely silent.

Haku stared at that smile, a cold shiver running down his spine. He knew his Sensei. He knew the smile was a wall, a polite dismissal meant to shield Haku from the horrifying reality of whatever cost Alaric had paid. His own life? His own soul?

Realizing he would get no answers, Haku exhaled a long, defeated sigh, his shoulders dropping.

”Although I am deeply interested to know the mechanics behind it, I won’t force you, Sensei,” Haku said, recovering his polite smile, though it was tinged with profound worry. He glanced at Minato and Kushina, seeing the identical, burning curiosity mirrored in the eyes of the two seal masters. ”Although, I am quite curious how Yondaime-sama and Lady Uzumaki will live from now on. The world has shifted dramatically.”

”They are incredibly smart people, Haku,” Alaric replied, the tension easing as he stood up from the table. ”They survived war, led a village, and mastered the most complex arts known to shinobi. They’ll figure out how to navigate the peace just fine.”

Alaric turned his attention fully to the Fourth Hokage, stretching his arms above his head until his spine popped.

”Speaking of navigating,” Alaric said, a predatory, excited gleam entering his eyes. ”I am incredibly curious to know if the Shinsei Tensei was a completely successful structural integration. A living body is one thing, but combat performance is another.”

Minato stood up, recognizing the shift in the atmosphere. The domestic quiet of the morning was over.

”You want to test the vessel,” Minato deduced, his cerulean eyes sharpening as he tapped into his chakra reserves, feeling the familiar, boundless ocean of energy waiting at his command.

”I want you to spar with me,” Alaric grinned, cracking his knuckles. ”I need you to assess if you are truly restored to your absolute peak capabilities. I need to know if there are any micro-fractures in your chakra coils, any delays in your synaptic responses, or anything fundamentally missing in yourself.”

Alaric gestured toward the sliding glass doors leading to the expansive, heavily warded backyard of the compound.

”No holding back, Namikaze. I want the Yellow Flash at full speed.”
