Chapter 335: Chapter 334: The Soil of Memories and the Empty Granary

The Skies Above the Land of Fire

High above the sprawling, vibrant mosaic of the Fire Capital, Alaric Jonathan Kenway simply stopped.

One moment he was a streak of olive green and gold tearing upward into the stratosphere, defying the fundamental laws of gravity; the next, he arrested his momentum entirely, hovering in the crisp, frigid air with the casual stillness of a man standing on solid ground. Below him, the grand pagodas and winding streets of the Daimyo’s seat shrank into a distant, intricate miniature, obscured by the shifting veils of passing clouds.

He hadn’t needed to fly. It was an inefficient, overly dramatic method of travel when he possessed the instantaneous displacement of the Hiraishin. Yet, he had launched himself from Kyū Madoka’s window for a very specific, calculated reason. The Kotoamatsukami he had cast upon the Daimyo was a masterpiece of psychological engineering, but for the fabricated memories to perfectly calcify into unquestionable reality, the ending needed to match the beginning. In the memories Alaric had implanted, the mysterious blonde savior had departed the young prince by floating into the heavens. To vanish in a flash of light would have created a subconscious dissonance, a crack in the illusion.

Alaric took a final drag from his cigar, exhaling a plume of smoke that was immediately snatched away by the high-altitude winds, and let the burning stub fall toward the earth.

’Theatrics established and the royal mandate secured,’ Alaric mused, tapping the breast pocket of his flak jacket where the Daimyo’s sealed scroll rested securely against his chest. ’Now, it’s time to address the actual bleeding.’

His vast, oceanic sensory network expanded, sweeping outward from the capital toward the rural, agricultural veins that fed the nation. Through the integration of his shadow clones’ memories, he had already mapped the exact coordinates of the most devastated settlements. More importantly, those clones had dutifully left behind invisible, spatial anchors etched into the foundations of the provincial warehouses.

Focusing his intent on the nearest marker, Alaric allowed his chakra to fold the space around him.

FLASH.

Midori no Mura (Green Village)

The biting cold of the upper atmosphere was instantly replaced by the stifling, stale air of an enclosed space.

Alaric materialized in the center of a massive, timber-framed building. The transition was completely silent, his boots touching the packed dirt floor without disturbing the thick layer of dust that coated it. He stood in the dim twilight of the structure, the only illumination bleeding through the cracks in the boarded-up windows.

He looked around, a heavy, profound sigh escaping his lips. He shook his head, the corners of his mouth turning down in deep disappointment.

The warehouse was a cavern of hollow promises.

It was designed to hold thousands of bushels of grain, endless crates of salted meats, and vital medical supplies meant to sustain the surrounding region through the harshest of winters. Yet, it was entirely, unapologetically empty. There were no burlap sacks tucked into the corners. There were no wooden crates stacked against the support beams. There were only cobwebs, the scurrying of starved rats, and the lingering scent of dry rot.

He had already known this. The memories transferred from his dispersed clones had painted this exact, bleak picture. But knowing the numbers on a ledger and standing in the physical void where salvation was supposed to be were two entirely different experiences. He had come here holding a microscopic sliver of hope that perhaps a delayed caravan had arrived, that perhaps some fraction of the billions of Ryo released by the treasury had miraculously manifested into actual relief.

But there was nothing.

’It doesn’t matter what era you are in, what continent you walk, or what dimension you breathe in,’ Alaric thought, a cold, clinical anger tightening his jaw. ’There will always be parasites in silk robes, perfectly willing to line their pockets while ordinary people starve in the dirt. Greed is the only true universal constant.’

Pushing open the heavy, unbarred wooden doors, Alaric stepped out of the hollow granary and into the harsh reality of the village.

The sight that greeted him struck a discordant, painful chord deep within his chest.

This was not a hidden village fortified by chakra-wielding mercenaries, nor was it a bustling, wealthy merchant hub. It was an ordinary civilian settlement, the kind of agrarian community that formed the quiet, indispensable backbone of the Elemental Nations. Under normal circumstances, a place like this would be a thriving hive of pastoral life, filled with the shouts of farmers hawking fresh crops, the laughter of children chasing stray dogs, and the steady, rhythmic thud of blacksmiths hammering horseshoes for passing travelers.

Instead, it was a ghost town baking in the midday sun.

The famine had stripped the land of its vitality, leaving behind cracked, barren fields that looked like shattered pottery. But the true devastation was etched into the people. As Alaric walked slowly down the central dirt road, his boots kicking up small clouds of parched dust, he observed the horrific toll of the corruption.

Villagers sat slumped against the walls of their modest wooden homes, their faces gaunt, their eyes hollowed out by the agonizing, slow crawl of starvation. The doors to their houses were shut tight, not to keep out thieves... for there was nothing left to steal... but to hide their despair from the world. A few desperate souls, reduced to skin and bone, reached out frail, trembling hands toward him from the gutters, silently begging the passing stranger for a stray coin or a crust of bread.

Alaric stopped, looking down at an elderly man whose ribcage was visibly straining against his thin, dirty tunic.

For a man who had grown accustomed to the absolute pinnacle of luxury... a man who commanded an untouchable empire, dined on the most expensive food, and casually tossed thousands of dollars away on afternoon shopping trips with his immortal wife... the visceral reality of this poverty was jarring.

But it wasn’t foreign to him.

As he stared at the sunken faces of the villagers, the pristine, god-like detachment he usually carried fractured, allowing a deeply buried memory to surface.

He was suddenly no longer standing in the Land of Fire. He was back in Swansea, in the cold, damp misery of 18th-century England. He remembered the cramped, drafty farmhouse. He remembered his mother, Eleanor, rationing out thin, watery stew, trying to stretch a single chicken across a week. He remembered the heavy, unspoken anxiety in his father Leonard’s eyes when the frost came early, threatening to kill the crops that were their only lifeline against absolute ruin. He remembered how Bernard and Linette always sailed far away just to sell their cheap wares.

The Kenway family had never sunk to this horrific level of starvation, largely due to their relentless grit and Alaric’s eventual, system-backed intervention. But the fear of it... the humiliating, soul-crushing vulnerability of being poor and at the mercy of the elements... was a sensation he had intimately known.

It tugged sharply at a thread of emotion he rarely allowed himself to indulge.

’I’m not going to just walk past this,’ Alaric decided, his blue eyes hardening with an absolute, unyielding resolve.

He hadn’t engineered this mission to play the role of the benevolent, cape-wearing hero. He wasn’t doing this to stroke his own ego or to desperately cling to some philosophical concept of his remaining humanity. He didn’t care if his soul was becoming more monster than man. He was here primarily to uphold a lucrative, politically advantageous contract with the Fire Daimyo.

But looking at these people, the arithmetic of his intent shifted. He possessed the literal power to reshape the earth, the medical prowess to banish disease, and the authority to execute the bastards who had stolen their future. He would fix these barren lands, he would heal their sickness, and he would hunt down the embezzlers with a ruthlessness that would make the Shinigami wince. He would do it simply because he could, and because leaving them to rot when he had the cure in his hands was an insult to the memory of the Swansea dirt farmer he used to be. Furthermore, he wouldn’t charge these villagers a single, copper ryo for the miracle.

”Alright,” Alaric murmured to himself, rolling his shoulders as he assessed the village layout. ”Let’s get to work.”

He understood, however, that his current appearance was profoundly intimidating. He was a towering, heavily muscled giant wearing a Konoha flak jacket... a symbol of military authority that usually brought fear, not comfort, to isolated civilian populations. If he simply marched into their homes, they would likely cower or assume he was there to forcibly conscript their remaining youth or demand non-existent taxes.

He needed to soften the edges.

Alaric closed his eyes, seamlessly weaving a highly sophisticated, yet incredibly subtle Genjutsu over his own physical presence. It wasn’t an illusion designed to alter his face or change the color of his clothes; rather, it was an emotional manipulation of the ambient light and chakra radiating from his body. He suppressed his overwhelming, apex-predator aura, replacing it with a localized field of warmth, approachability, and absolute trustworthiness. To anyone looking at him now, the sharp, dangerous angles of his face seemed gentler, and his posture exuded the comforting reliability of a beloved, long-lost friend.

With his charming façade securely in place, Alaric resumed his walk toward the center of the village.

His enhanced hearing easily filtered through the silence of the settlement, picking up a concentrated cluster of sounds emanating from a specific structure ahead. It was the largest house in the village, boasting a sturdy slate roof and reinforced timber walls, though it still bore the unmistakable signs of recent neglect.

Inside, Alaric could hear the wet, ragged coughing of the infirm, the soft, exhausted murmurs of caretakers, and the frantic, shallow breathing of people battling severe malnutrition and disease.

’A makeshift clinic,’ Alaric deduced, stopping before the small wooden gate of the property. ’This must be the residence of the village chief. They’ve gathered the worst cases here to pool their remaining resources.’

He walked up the short stone path to the weathered front door. He paused for a moment, mentally debating how to announce his arrival. Should he declare himself an emissary of the Daimyo? A wandering medic? A lost merchant?

’Hmm... how should I introduce myself?’ Alaric thought, raising his hand toward the wood. He briefly considered a grand, comforting speech, before shaking his head in mild amusement at his own overthinking. ’Whatever. I’ll just wing it. Results speak louder than titles anyway.’

He rapped his knuckles against the timber, the sound sharp and clear in the quiet afternoon.

Knock. Knock.
