Chapter 306: Chapter 305: The Weight of Cheers and the Code of Souls

---Sunagakure - The Main Gates---

The transition from the desolate, wind-scoured dunes of the Land of Wind into the hidden throat of Sunagakure was usually marked by an eerie, disciplined silence. But today, as the Rescue Team crested the final ridge and passed beneath the massive stone archway, they were met with a wall of sound that physically rattled their bones.

It was a roar. A cacophony of thousands of voices blending into a single, overwhelming tide of relief and jubilation.

Naruto staggered slightly, his blue eyes going wide as he took in the sight. The main thoroughfare of the village, stretching all the way up to the Kazekage’s spherical tower, was flanked by a sea of people. Civilians draped in desert robes, merchants who had abandoned their stalls, and shinobi clad in sand... colored flak jackets... they were all there, packed shoulder-to-shoulder, straining against the barricades.

”Whoa...” Naruto breathed, the sheer volume of the spectacle rendering him unusually quiet.

Beside him, Sakura mirrored his astonishment, her hands instinctively coming up to cover her mouth as a shower of hastily gathered flower petals and colored confetti rained down from the overhead bridges. ”There are so many of them... the entire village must be here.”

Kankuro, walking point while carefully levitating the still-unconscious form of Gaara on a platform of manipulated sand, caught their stunned expressions. A proud, exhausted smirk touched his painted face.

”Don’t look so surprised,” Kankuro called out over the din, leaning closer so they could hear him. ”One of the border patrol captains sent a messenger hawk the moment we cleared the river country perimeter. They knew we were bringing him home.”

As they walked further down the avenue, the cheering intensified. Names were called out—praises for the Sand siblings, thanks to the Leaf shinobi, but above all, chants for their fallen, newly returned leader.

”Lord Kazekage!”

”He’s alive! He’s back!”

For the first time since they had embarked on the grueling chase, the crushing weight of the mission lifted from Team 7’s shoulders. Naruto felt a warm, unfamiliar swelling in his chest, a profound sense of rightness. He looked at Gaara’s pale, peaceful face resting on the sand litter. They had done it. They had actually saved a friend, and in doing so, they had preserved the very heart of a nation.

”Do not dawdle, you sentimental fools!” a sharp, croaking voice shattered the warm atmosphere.

Lady Chiyo, hobbling along with the aid of her cane, glared at the adoring crowds as if they were a nuisance rather than a welcoming committee. She rapped her cane against the cobblestones, scowling up at her grandson. ”This isn’t a parade, Kankuro! The Kazekage’s chakra coils are severely depleted and he requires continuous, sterile medical treatment indoors. Every second you spend bathing in this useless adulation is a risk to his recovery!”

Kankuro didn’t lose his smirk. In fact, it grew a fraction softer. He didn’t snap back with his usual venom, instead offering the old woman a sidelong glance.

”Let them have this, Grandmother,” Kankuro replied, his voice carrying a protective, unyielding edge. ”Look at them. They thought their village was broken. They thought their leader was dead. Give them three minutes to celebrate the fact that their Kazekage is alive and breathing before you lock him away in a sterile ward.”

Chiyo grumbled something foul under her breath, turning her face away to hide the faint, unmistakable sheen of moisture gathering in her aged eyes. She didn’t argue further, increasing her pace just enough to lead the procession toward the hospital.

Trailing slightly behind the main group, Haku walked in silence.

His teal kimono caught the wind, his long dark hair swaying gently as he observed the faces of the villagers. He saw weeping mothers clutching their children, seasoned shinobi saluting with trembling hands, and youths screaming Gaara’s name with unbridled reverence.

Haku closed his eyes for a brief moment, letting the sound wash over him.

For the entirety of his early life, he had known only fear from the masses. He was a kekkei genkai user in the Bloody Mist... a cursed existence meant to be hunted, despised, and eventually discarded. Even under Zabuza, he was a tool of assassination, slipping in and out of the shadows, leaving only corpses and terror in his wake.

But here, bathed in the midday sun of a foreign land, he was surrounded by gratitude. He had fought and dismantled an artisan of death, not to extinguish life, but to preserve it.

’For once...’ Haku thought, a small, incredibly soft smile touching his lips. ’I did something truly good. Something that brings light instead of frost.’

”You look like a man who just realized he’s a hero.”

Haku opened his eyes and turned his head slightly. Kakashi had fallen into step beside him, his visible eye crinkling into a characteristic, lazy smile as he placed a reassuring hand on the youth’s shoulder.

”I am merely a shinobi completing an assigned task, Kakashi-san,” Haku replied politely, though the warmth in his voice betrayed his humility. ”The real credit belongs to Naruto and the Sand siblings for their unyielding will.”

Kakashi shook his head, his silver hair catching the sunlight. ”Don’t sell yourself short, Haku. When the debriefing reaches Tsunade-sama, the details of this operation will be classified, but the broad strokes will inevitably leak. An S-class mission involving multiple Akatsuki members, and you neutralized two of them essentially on your own.”

Kakashi gave Haku’s shoulder a light squeeze, his tone dipping into a mix of awe and amusement. ”This is going to be a rather massive addition to an already over-the-top portfolio. You’ve long surpassed the legends of my generation and the ones before. The ’Ice Devil’ moniker is going to reach mythic proportions after today.”

Haku chuckled, a light, bell-like sound, brushing a stray lock of hair behind his ear. ”I assure you, I do not do these things for fame, Kakashi-san. Fame is loud, and I prefer the quiet.”

”Whatever your reasons may be,” Kakashi replied dryly, pulling his hand back to rest in his pocket, ”fame has a funny way of finding people who drop S-rank bounties like they’re fetching groceries. Rumor in the Bingo Book circles is that you accept high-risk missions and finish them before the ink on the contract dries.”

Haku pondered that for a moment, letting out another soft chuckle. He supposed it was true; Alaric’s grueling training had fundamentally altered his perception of difficulty. What the world saw as a desperate struggle to the death, Haku often processed as a complex, but solvable, equation.

He looked ahead at the rest of Team 7, who were walking closely behind Gaara’s floating stretcher. A sudden, mischievous thought crossed Haku’s mind.

He lengthened his stride, seamlessly gliding past Kakashi to walk alongside Sasuke and Sakura.

”You know,” Haku said casually, his voice perfectly pitched to carry over the cheering crowd to the entire Konoha contingent, ”with the successful retrieval of the Kazekage and the elimination of Akatsuki operatives, this operation officially qualifies for S-class status and compensation.”

Sasuke grunted, his dark eyes focused forward. ”Obviously.”

Haku’s polite smile widened just a fraction. He tilted his head toward the spiky-haired blonde bounding energetically ahead. ”Which makes it rather amusing when you consider that Naruto is currently the only Genin in the Elemental Nations to have successfully completed an S-class mission.”

The statement dropped like an anvil.

Every single member of Team 7... and a few Sand shinobi within earshot... froze mid-stride.

Sasuke tripped over empty air, barely catching himself before he face-planted into the sand. He whipped his head around, staring at Naruto as if the boy had suddenly grown a second head.

Sakura’s jaw went slack, her green eyes widening to comical proportions as the realization finally clicked into place.

”Ah!” Sakura yelled, her voice piercing through the ambient noise of the parade, completely devoid of her usual composure. She pointed a trembling, accusatory finger at her teammate. ”I remember now... Naruto, you failed the exams! You left for three years! You’re still a Genin!”

The cheering crowd nearby seemed to falter in confusion at the sudden outburst from the pink-haired Kunoichi.

Naruto halted, his shoulders hiking up to his ears as a deep, flush of red crept up his neck and exploded across his whiskered cheeks. He spun around, waving his arms frantically to shush her.

”Sakura-chan! Shut up, shut up, shut up!” Naruto hissed, scratching the back of his head with manic embarrassment, painfully aware of the Kazekage’s elite guard suddenly giving him bewildered looks. ”You didn’t need to yell something so embarrassing in front of the whole village! I’m gonna be Hokage one day, dattebayo! I just... took a detour!”

Haku laughed quietly behind his hand, the sound harmonizing perfectly with Kakashi’s muffled snickers. Even Sasuke, having recovered his footing, let out a slow, deeply exasperated sigh, pinching the bridge of his nose.

The tension of the past few days finally shattered entirely, leaving behind the chaotic, brilliant warmth of laughs from the people.

---Konoha - The Kenway Compound---

Miles away, hidden beneath layers of impenetrable barrier seals and privacy wards, the atmosphere in the Kenway Compound’s primary study was the antithesis of a celebration. It was a pressure cooker of intellectual obsession.

Alaric Jonathan Kenway was ”coding.”

The expansive mahogany desk was entirely invisible, buried beneath a chaotic sea of high-grade parchment, discarded ink brushes, and hastily scribbled geometric theories. But the true work wasn’t happening on paper.

Hovering in the air around Alaric were dozens of complex, three-dimensional seal matrices, glowing in brilliant, burning gold. They slowly rotated, overlapping and dissecting one another as Alaric’s hands moved through the space, manually adjusting lines of chakra syntax like a conductor guiding a phantom orchestra.

He was hyperfocused, a bead of sweat tracing the sharp line of his jaw... a rare physical manifestation of stress for a man who casually brushed off Kage-level threats.

Reviving the dead was not a matter of simply pouring chakra into a corpse. It was a violation of the universe’s foundational rules, and the universe notoriously fought back against paradoxes.

Alaric muttered to himself, his blue eyes tracking the shifting algorithms. ”The problem isn’t the flesh. The flesh is just carbon and water. The problem is the tether.”

He needed the Edo Tensei. Not the abhorrent, sacrificial abomination that Tobirama Senju had birthed and Orochimaru had perverted, but the absolute, undeniable essence of its mechanics. The Edo Tensei was the only known jutsu that possessed the exact esoteric frequency required to reach into the Pure Land, locate a specific soul, and drag it back across the metaphysical boundary into the living world.

But Alaric refused to use a living sacrifice. The very concept disgusted him, and more importantly, it produced an animated corpse, an enslaved husk of ash and dust. He didn’t want zombies. He had promised Kushina and Minato life.

”I have to strip the summoning algorithm from the enslavement binding,” Alaric calculated, pinching a glowing golden circle in the air and expanding it to examine the runes within. ”Isolate the anchor, reject the sacrifice.”

Even at his ”Ascendant” level of Fuinjutsu, this was pushing the absolute boundaries of his comprehension. It required threading a needle in a hurricane.

The second, arguably larger complication was Minato’s specific geographic location in the afterlife. The Fourth Hokage wasn’t in the Pure Land; his soul was actively being digested in the stomach of the Shinigami, trapped in eternal combat with the Yin half of the Nine-Tails.

’That part is straightforward, at least,’ Alaric thought, briefly pausing his hand movements. ’I just need to take a stroll to the ruined Uzumaki Shrine on the outskirts of the village, grab the Shinigami Mask, and slice the Reaper’s belly open. Tedious, but mechanically simple.’

The true genius of his plan... the crux of the miracle he was attempting to forge... relied on his ultimate ability... the Hourglass of Samsara.

His theory was as beautiful as it was insane.

He didn’t need fresh bodies. He didn’t need Zetsu clones. He needed a fragment of their original existence. A single piece of bone or a strand of viable DNA left behind in the ruins of the Kyuubi attack.

With that anchor, the Hourglass of Samsara wouldn’t merely regenerate the tissue. It wasn’t medical ninjutsu. It was temporal and spatial manipulation. Because the bone fragment possessed a history of existing as a living being within the timeline of this world, Alaric could use the Hourglass to forcefully ”rewind” the localized state of that matter.

He pictured the analogy in his mind to ensure his logic held.

’It’s like a burned book,’ Alaric rationalized, drawing a complex temporal rune in the air. ’Medical ninjutsu tries to glue the ashes back together. The Hourglass of Samsara tells the universe that the fire never happened, calling upon the universe’s memory of the book to materialize its prime state into the present space.’

By rewinding the DNA, he would perfectly reconstruct the bodies of Minato and Kushina to the exact physical peak they possessed mere moments before the Nine-Tails’ claw had pierced their chests.

Theoretically, the bodies would be flawlessly living, breathing vessels. But they would be completely empty. A biological shell without a spark. A coma with zero brain activity.

This led to the final, most dangerous hurdle: Soul Synchronization.

If he pulled their souls from the Pure Land... and the Shinigami... and shoved them into these living shells, the universe would recognize the anomaly. It would view the souls as foreign contaminants in a vessel that had legally expired sixteen years ago, and it would immediately try to forcefully eject them back into the afterlife.

”Which means,” Alaric breathed heavily, his fingers flying through a complex web of sealing logic, ”I have to trick the universe.”

He was designing a tertiary, highly complex anchor seal... a metaphysical gravity well. This seal would be etched into the very core of the restored bodies, locking Minato and Kushina’s souls inside the living flesh so tightly that the universe’s rejection mechanics would fail to separate them. They would be bound to the mortal plane until they naturally died of old age or chose to release the anchor themselves.

Because they were in their true, living bodies, uncorrupted by Edo Tensei ash, they would be fully human. Their organs would function, their chakra networks would flow naturally, they would age, and theoretically, if they so desired, they could even conceive another child.

They would be definitively, undeniably alive.

Alaric let out a long, ragged sigh, dropping his hands to the desk and rubbing his throbbing temples. The golden seals floating around the room ceased their spinning, humming quietly in a stable holding pattern.

For the first time since arriving in the Elemental Nations, he felt profoundly stressed. The sheer mental processing power required to balance temporal mechanics, soul summoning, and universal rejection logic was staggering.

”Why the hell did I even try to make such a promise?” Alaric murmured to the empty room, a dry, self-deprecating chuckle escaping his lips.

He leaned back in his leather chair, staring up at the glowing masterpiece of code hovering near the ceiling. He slowly shook his head.

”Nah, I can’t say that... because if this becomes successful,” he whispered, a spark of genuine excitement replacing the exhaustion in his eyes, ”this will be the biggest achievement I have ever produced in terms of Fuinjutsu... or perhaps jutsu as a whole. I’d be effectively conquering death without playing god.”

He paused for a moment, an intrusive thought crossing his mind.

He could, theoretically, just open the System Shop. He could purchase the ultimate upgrade... Fuinjutsu: Sage... and the knowledge would download directly into his brain, solving these esoteric bottlenecks instantly.

He remembered when he last checked his System Balance and had $657,768,331 31¢. The staggering wealth he possessed in the the system was just not enough to buy the £15,156,250,000 item. Converted to the Pennmerian dollars, it would’ve been $3,789,062,500. Money was the issue and could’ve always just sped up the money’s inflation, but he didn’t want that.

”Unfortunately, I don’t have the disposable money for a Sage-level skill upgrade right now,” Alaric chuckled, shaking his head at the irony of being the wealthiest man on two continents but broke in a cosmic storefront. ”And I refuse to crash Pennmere’s economy just to cheat on a math problem.”

He slammed his hands on the armrests and pushed himself up from the seat. With a sharp wave of his hand, the floating golden seals instantly collapsed, shrinking into a concentrated point of light before vanishing entirely into his memory.

He grabbed his crimson coat from the back of the chair and slipped it on, adjusting the high collar with renewed determination.

”Theory is solid. The code is drafting,” Alaric announced to the silence of the study. He snapped his fingers, lighting a fresh cigar. ”Let’s go to the Uzumaki Residence as the first step... time to see what I can do about a certain mask.”
