I Am Your Natural Enemy

The Internal Staff gazed at his old section chief, unable to utter even a single apology.

The Chief, who had been standing below for quite some time, saw the look on his subordinate’s face and realized that his last bit of wishful thinking was crushed.

He sighed and stubbed out his cigarette.

”Let’s go.”

About an hour ago, the Internal Staff should have been sitting on the Regret Chair in the interrogation room.

Yet, he spoke up on his behalf, and then personally came to assist with the arrest.

After all, being colleagues for twenty years, in such a department, who doesn’t know each other?

Upon confirming that the Internal Staff hadn’t fled but returned home, the Chief already knew what the Internal Staff was thinking.

He understood that if other Field Agents came to arrest him, in cases of intentionally leaking secrets, they would certainly not be too considerate.

By coming himself, at least he had some authority to let this old colleague arrange things at home before taking him away.

Not taking him away in front of his family was the limit of what his authority could achieve.

The Internal Staff didn’t resist, didn’t run, and got into the car directly.

There were just two cars, filled with fully armed Field Agents, all of whom looked at him with complex eyes.

Having worked in one organization for twenty years, even if the organization is large and full of people, you might not be familiar with everyone, but at least you’re familiar to some extent, knowing the other as Internal Staff of the Scorching Sun Department.

Moreover, this Internal Staff had been diligent for twenty years, from a young man in his twenties to now nearly fifty.

He had once been a Field Agent, got injured, made contributions, then transitioned to Internal Staff; many people knew him.

In the car, the Chief saw the Internal Staff with tears streaming down his face and sighed.

”I can roughly guess why you did this.

You’re an old-timer too; there’s no need for me to say much. You should be clearer than I am.

When we get there, just say what needs to be said openly.

Strive to make amends perhaps it might result in leniency.”

The Chief had actually thought about saying many things earlier, but he didn’t.

As a veteran of the Scorching Sun Department, he should have been vigilant when the Internal Staff’s daughter suddenly started to recover, and her recovery was exceptionally good.

It’s not malicious speculation, nor thinking that good things are abnormal, but rather the sensitivity that someone from the Scorching Sun Department should have.

It was only because they’d been colleagues for twenty years, with the Internal Staff always being diligent, that he overlooked it.

After all, having seen too many things, one should know in their heart what is normal and what isn’t.

Not noticing at the time, not expecting it to develop to this point, and not pulling back the old colleague in time, made the Chief feel somewhat guilty.

If he had been more vigilant and discovered it earlier, it wouldn’t have come to this...

The Chief’s mind was filled with complexity, which turned into a long sigh.

Meanwhile, in a tall building far away, a person holding a telescope watched the Internal Staff being taken away and immediately sent out a message.

In less than a minute, a young man far in Nanyang listened to an elder report the situation, and after listening, the young man looked at the intelligence.

It was very detailed, including why he was caught, how he was caught, and where he was arranged afterward, all very clear.

Many pieces of information aligned with the intelligence they had received.

It was just that the Scorching Sun Department’s intelligence was very comprehensive, even had Old Meng’s medical records.

Looking at the records, the young man confirmed that their conjecture was correct, Old Meng was counterattacked by the suppressed sorcery all at once, and all his manifestations were perfectly aligned, without any doubts.

”Boss, what about the Gold Coin...” the elder standing by asked.

The young man glanced at the elder.

”Do you really need to ask me this?

If we don’t keep our word even this much, do you believe that by daybreak, everyone in the Scorching Sun Department will know we’ve broken our promise?

Do you believe someone will report us to the Scorching Sun Department tomorrow?

In business, credibility is paramount, it’s the most valuable asset.

Establishing credibility takes decades, centuries.

Destroying it takes just an instant.

We promised him twenty-four pieces, and seeing that the intelligence he provided was so detailed, let’s make it a round number.

Give him thirty pieces.”

”Boss, I meant that since he’s been taken away, won’t that expose a lot of things?

I promised him that within three days, the Gold Coins would be delivered to his daughter.

If we give them on the third day, we haven’t broken our promise either.

Before he gets them, he wouldn’t dare say anything.”

The young man raised his hand, and a gold-foil chocolate in the shape of a Gold Coin appeared between his fingers.

The Gold Coin danced between his fingers as he said calmly.

”We intended to expose this matter anyway, is there a faster and more comprehensive advertisement than this method?

This isn’t something toxic, it’s life.

It’s something everyone needs, no matter how righteous they claim to be, they can’t hide the fact that they want it too.

There will always be someone who needs it, including people in the Scorching Sun Department.

At times like this, we need a pillar of prestige, a demonstration of value.

Be generous in our actions, don’t bring the petty niggling attitude from the pawnshop here.

We got what we wanted, just give them the reward.

That way, people will be willing to help us in the future.

Deliver the thirty pieces now.”

”Understood, boss.”

The elder replied, watching the Gold Coin flip between the young man’s fingers, a hint of longing flashing in his eyes.

Because the other offered what no one else could, that’s why he worked there, providing support.

Understanding the other’s thoughts, asking seemingly foolish questions, wasn’t part of the job, but it was key to making his work easier.
